Banach Spaces with Property (M) and their Szlenk Indices

We show that a separable Banach space with property (M*) has a Szlenk index equal to ω₀, and a norm with an optimal modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness. From this we derive a condition on the Szlenk functions of the space and its dual which characterizes embeddability into c ₀ or an ℓ _p -sum of finite dimensional spaces. We also prove that two Lipschitz-isomorphic Orlicz sequence spaces contain the same ℓ _p -spaces.      

New geometric properties of Banach spaces

In this paper, we introduce new geometric properties as generalizations of p‐uniform smoothness and q‐uniform convexity of Banach spaces. Furthermore, using generalized Beckner's inequality, we characterize the properties in terms of norm inequalities. As an application, we consider the duality relation.     

Some geometric properties of integral modules

Day's characterization of those spaces 1^p(X_i) which are uniformly convex, in terms of the moduli of convexity of the X_i, is generalized for arbitrary integral modules on measure spaces (K,m) and simplified when m is finite. For this latter purpose a lemma on the moduli of convexity and of smoothness is proved which incidentally gives a further necessary condition for the existence of integral modules in given direct integrals. Further the notions of strict convexity and smoothness of an integral module are related to those of its components.     

The cotype and uniform convexity of unitary ideals

Information about geometric properties, such as uniform convexity and smoothness, type and cotype, of a unitary Banach idealS _E is obtained from properties of the symmetric Banach sequence spaceE. Duality theorem for B‐valued martingale Orlicz–Hardy spaces associated with concave functions

The dual space of B ‐valued martingale Orlicz–Hardy space with a concave function Φ, which is associated with the conditional p‐variation of B ‐valued martingale, is characterized. To obtain the results, a new type of Campanato spaces for B ‐valued martingales is introduced and the classical technique of atomic decompositions is improved. Some results obtained here are connected closely with the p‐uniform smoothness and q‐uniform convexity of the underlying Banach space.     

Sharp uniform convexity and smoothness inequalities for trace norms

Summary We prove several sharp inequalities specifying the uniform convexity and uniform smoothness properties of the Schatten trace idealsC _p , which are the analogs of the Lebesgue spacesL _p in non-commutative integration. The inequalities are all precise analogs of results which had been known inL _p , but were only known inC _p for special values ofp. Estimates of Disjoint Sequences in Banach Lattices and R.I. Function Spaces

We introduce UDS _p -property (resp. UDT _q -property) in Banach lattices as the property that every normalized disjoint sequence has a subsequence with an upper p-estimate (resp. lower q-estimate). In the case of rearrangement invariant spaces, the relationships with Boyd indices of the space are studied. Some applications of these properties are given to the high order smoothness of Banach lattices, in the sense of the existence of differentiable bump functions     

Power type asymptotically uniformly smooth and asymptotically uniformly flat norms

We provide a short characterization of p-asymptotic uniform smoothability and asymptotic uniform flatenability of operators and of Banach spaces. We use these characterizations to show that many asymptotic uniform smoothness properties pass to injective tensor products of operators and of Banach spaces. In particular, we prove that the injective tensor product of two asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces is asymptotically uniformly smooth. We prove that for \(1<p<\infty \), the class of p-asymptotically uniformly smoothable operators can be endowed with an ideal norm making this class a Banach ideal. We also prove that the class of asymptotically uniformly flattenable operators can be endowed with an ideal norm making this class a Banach ideal.     

Infinite Dimensional Geometric Properties of Real Interpolation Spaces

Estimates for the moduli of noncompact convexity of l_p-sums and real interpolation spaces for finite families of spaces are given. It is proved that such an interpolation preserves nearly uniform convexity and property (β).     

Global smoothness and uniform convergence of smooth Gauss–Weierstrass singular operators

In this article we continue with the study of smooth Gauss–Weierstrass singular integral operators over the real line regarding their simultaneous global smoothness preservation property with respect to the L_p norm, 1≤p≤∞, by involving higher order moduli of smoothness. Also we study their simultaneous approximation to the unit operator with rates involving the modulus of continuity with respect to the uniform norm. The produced Jackson type inequalities are almost sharp containing elegant constants, and they reflect the high order of differentiability of the engaged function.     

On the Order of Decrease of Uniform Moduli of Smoothness for the Classes of Functions E p,m [ɛ]

In this paper, we solve the problem of the exact order of decrease of uniform moduli of smoothness for the classes of 2π-periodic functions of several variables with a given majorant of the sequence of total best approximations in the metric of L _p , 1 ≤ p < ∞.     

B -valued martingale spaces with small index and atomic decompositions

Some atomic decomposition theorems for Banach-space-valued martingales are established. Using them, the embedding relationships between martingale spaces with small index are discussed. The results obtained here are connected closely with thep-uniform smoothness and q-uniform convexity of Banach space in which the martingales take values.

Uniform convexity properties of norms on a super-reflexive Banach space

We study uniform convexity and smoothness properties satisfied by all the equivalent norms of a super-reflexive Banach space. We give some applications concerning quasi-transitive Banach spaces, and the uniform approximation property.     

Convergence of Some Greedy Algorithms in Banach Spaces

We consider some theoretical greedy algorithms for approximation in Banach spaces with respect to a general dictionary. We prove convergence of the algorithms for Banach spaces which satisfy certain smoothness assumptions. A note on geometrical properties of Banach spaces using ψ-direct sums

Let X be a Banach space and ψ a continuous convex function on [0,1] satisfying certain conditions. Let Xψ_⊕X be the ψ-direct sum of X. In this note, we characterize the strict convexity, uniform convexity and uniformly non-squareness of Banach spaces using ψ-direct sums, which extends the well-known characterization of these spaces.     

Boundedly complete basic sequences,c 0-subspaces,and injections of Banach spaces

We study the connection between topological properties of subsets of a given Banach space and their images under linear, continuous one-to-one mappings on the one hand and the existence in a given Banach space of either a boundedly complete basic sequence (BCBS) or an isomorphic copy ofc _o (c _o -subspace) on the other hand. We present criteria for the existence of a BCBS. They are deduced from new characterisations ofG _δ-embeddings which we also present. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for separability of a dual Banach space in terms of saturation by BCBS. Criteria for the existence in a Banach space of ac _o -subspace are also presented. We describe the class of separable Banach spaces which contains either a BCBS or ac _o -subspace. The well-posedness and stability of a repairable standby human–machine system

In this paper, the solution of a standby human–machine system is investigated. By using the method of functional analysis, especially, the linear operator theory and the C₀ semigroup theory on Banach space, we prove the well-posedness and the existence of a positive solution of the system. And under some appropriate hypotheses, we study the asymptotic stability of solution of the system.     

Affine Approximation of Lipschitz Functions and Nonlinear Quotients

New concepts related to approximating a Lipschitz function between Banach spaces by affine functions are introduced. Results which clarify when such approximations are possible are proved and in some cases a complete characterization of the spaces X, Y for which any Lipschitz function from X to Y can be so approximated is obtained. This is applied to the study of Lipschitz and uniform quotient mappings between Banach spaces. It is proved, in particular, that any Banach space which is a uniform quotient of L _p , 1 < p < , is already isomorphic to a linear quotient of L _p . Submitted: June 1998, revised: December 1998.
