This work presents a theoretical study of the sound transmission into a finite cylinder under coupled structural and acoustic vibration. Particular attention of this study is focused on evaluating a dimensionless quantity, "noise reduction," for characterizing noise transmission into a small cylindrical enclosure. An analytical expression of the exterior sound pressure resulting from an oblique plane wave impinging upon the cylindrical shell is first presented, which is approximated from the exterior sound pressure for an infinite cylindrical structure. Next, the analytical solution of the interior sound pressure is computed using modal-interaction theory for the coupled structural acoustic system. These results are then used to derive the analytical formula for the noise reduction. Finally, the model is used to predict and characterize the sound transmission into a ChamberCore cylindrical structure, and the results are compared with experimental data. The effects of incidence angle and internal acoustic damping on the sound transmission into the cylinder are also parametrically studied.

A modal expansion method is used to model a cylindrical enclosure excited by an external plane wave. A set of distributed vibration absorbers (DVAs) and Helmholtz resonators (HRs) are applied to the structure to control the interior acoustic levels. Using an impedance matching method, the structure, the acoustic cavity, and the noise reduction devices are fully coupled to yield an analytical formulation of the structural kinetic energy and acoustic potential energy of a treated cylindrical cavity. Lightweight DVAs and small HRs tuned to the natural frequencies of the targeted structural and acoustic modes, respectively, result in significant acoustic and structural attenuation when the devices are optimally damped. Simulations show that significant interior noise reduction can only be achieved by adding damping to both structural and acoustic modes, which are resonant in the frequency bandwidth of interest. In order to be independent of the azimuth angle of the excitation and to avoid unwanted modal interactions, the devices are distributed evenly around the cylinder in rings. This treatment can only achieve good performance if the structure and the acoustic cavity are lightly damped.

In practical situations, large machinery is usually placed in an underwater vessel and changes the acoustic enclosure shape into an irregular one. The existence of machinery causes the difficulties in expressing sound transmission and radiation analytically. In this study, the sound radiation of a cylindrical shell excited by an internal acoustic source is modeled and analyzed. The cylindrical shell contains a machine modeled as a rectangular object, which is attached to a shell with a spring-mass system. The acoustic field of the cavity is computed by the integro-modal approach. The effect of object size on the coupling between acoustic mode and structural mode is investigated. The relationship between object volume and sound radiation is also studied. Numerical results show that the existence of objects inside vessels leads to a more effective coupling between the structure and acoustic enclosure than the existence of no objects in a regular-shaped cavity(i.e. empty vessel).

An analytical study is presented to predict low frequency noise transmission through finite stiffened panels into rectangular enclosures. Noise transmission is determined by solving the acoustic wave equation for the interior noise field and stiffened panel equations for vibrations of panels and stringers. The solution to this system of equations is obtained by a Galerkin-like procedure where the modes and frequencies for stiffened panels are determined by the transfer matrix method. Results include a comparison between theory and experiment and noise transmission through the sidewall of an aircraft.

A new modeling method is developed in this paper for the active minimization of noise within a three-dimensional irregular enclosure using distributed lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric (PZT) actuators, and the control mechanisms for irregular enclosure are analyzed. The irregular enclosure is modeled with four rigid walls and two simply supported flexible panels, and PZT actuators are bound to one of the flexible panels. The process of the new modeling method is as follows. First, the modal coupling method is used to establish the motion equations, which contain important coefficients such as modal masses and modal coupling coefficients, etc., of acoustic-structural-piezoelectric coupling system. Then, the acoustic modes and the modal masses of irregular enclosure are calculated by numerical methods. Last, the modal coupling coefficients in motion equations are calculated according to the numerical results of the acoustic modes of irregular enclosure and the modes of two panels. The validity of this modeling method is verified by a regular hexahedron enclosure. Two cost functions are applied to this model. With the two cost functions, good results are obtained in minimizing the sound-pressure level (SPL) within irregular enclosure according to numerical investigations. By comparing the results obtained under controlled and uncontrolled states, the control mechanisms of the system are discussed. It is found that the control mechanisms vary with disturbance frequencies. At most disturbance frequencies, the SPL within enclosure is reduced by restructuring the modes of two panels simultaneously. When the disturbance frequency comes close to one of the natural frequencies of panel a, the dominant mode of panel a is suppressed, while the modes of panel b are reconstructed. While the disturbance frequency is near one of the natural frequencies of panel b, the modes of two panels are restructured at the same time.

A typical approach to active control of sound radiation or transmission from vibrating structures involves active structural acoustic control (ASAC) and active noise control (ANC), which introduce respectively force input and compacted sound source to apply on or be close to the vibrating structure. However, for the ASAC approach, arrangement for secondary force and error sensor is heavily dependent upon the properties of the primary structure and acoustical space; for the ANC approach, a large number of compacted secondary sources are required. Hence, in this paper, based on distributed secondary sound source and near-field error sensor, active acoustic structure is proposed to construct adaptive or smart structure as a versatile module or element for controlling sound radiation or transmission at low frequencies. First, a theoretical model based on a minimization of the total sound radiation from the primary and secondary panel is established, after which, taking into consideration the relationship between the vibration modes pattern and sound radiation characteristics for secondary panels, optimal arrangement for the secondary panels is examined in detail. Finally, a near-field pressure-based error sensing approach is presented, based on two kinds of object function, and active control of sound radiation is performed.

In the context of the transmission of airborne noise into an aircraft fuselage, a mathematical model for sound transmission into a thin cylindrical shell is used to study sound transmission under “flight conditions”: i.e., under conditions of external air flow past a pressurized cylinder at flight altitude. Numerical results for different incidence angles are presented for a typical narrow-bodied jet in cruising flight at 10 660 m (35 000 ft) with interior pressure at 2440 m (8000 ft). A comparison is made between no-flow sound transmission at standard conditions on the ground to sound transmission under flight conditions. It is shown that at M = 0, the cylinder transmission loss has dips at fR (cylinder ring frequency) and fc (critical frequency for a flat panel of same material and thickness as shell). Below fR cylinder resonances affect TL. Between fR and fc, cylinder TL follows a masslaw behavior. Flow provides a modest increase in TL in the mass-law region, and strongly interacts with the cylinder resonances below fR. For normally-incident waves, TL is unaffected by flow.

This paper compares various decentralised control strategies, including structural and acoustic actuator–sensor configuration designs, to reduce noise transmission through a double panel structure. The comparison is based on identical control stability indexes. The double panel structure consists of two panels with air in between and offers the advantages of low sound transmission at high frequencies, low heat transmission, and low weight. The double panel structure is widely used, such as in the aerospace and automotive industries. Nevertheless, the resonance of the cavity and the poor sound transmission loss at low frequencies limit the double panel's noise control performance. Applying active structural acoustic control to the panels or active noise control to the cavity has been discussed in many papers. In this paper, the resonances of the panels and the cavity are considered simultaneously to further reduce the transmitted noise through an existing double panel structure. A structural–acoustic coupled model is developed to investigate and compare various structural control and cavity control methods. Numerical analysis and real-time control results show that structural control should be applied to both panels. Three types of cavity control sources are presented and compared. The results indicate that the largest noise reduction is obtained with cavity control by loudspeakers modified to operate as incident pressure sources.

Local feedback control of light honeycomb panels
This paper summarizes theoretical and experimental work on the feedback control of sound radiation from honeycomb panels using piezoceramic actuators. It is motivated by the problem of sound transmission in aircraft, specifically the active control of trim panels. Trim panels are generally honeycomb structures designed to meet the design requirement of low weight and high stiffness. They are resiliently mounted to the fuselage for the passive reduction of noise transmission. Local coupling of the closely spaced sensor and actuator was observed experimentally and modeled using a single degree of freedom system. The effect of the local coupling was to roll off the response between the actuator and sensor at high frequencies, so that a feedback control system can have high gain margins. Unfortunately, only relatively poor global performance is then achieved because of localization of reduction around the actuator. This localization prompts the investigation of a multichannel active control system. Globalized reduction was predicted using a model of 12-channel direct velocity feedback control. The multichannel system, however, does not appear to yield a significant improvement in the performance because of decreased gain margin.

This paper presents an analytical model for acoustic transmission characteristics of a cylindrical cavity system representing the acoustic resonance conditions of a Korean bell. The cylindrical cavity system consists of an internal cavity, a gap, an auxiliary cavity, and a rigid base. Since the internal cavity is connected to the external field through a gap, determination of the acoustic transmission characteristics becomes a coupling problem between the internal cavity and external field. The acoustic field of the internal cavity is considered by expanding the solution method of the mixed boundary problem, and the external field is addressed by modifying the radiation impedance model of a finite cylinder. The analytical model is validated by comparison with both experiment and a boundary element method. Using the analytical model, the resonance conditions are determined to maximize the resonance effect. Thus, the resonance frequencies of the bell cavity system are investigated according to the gap size and auxiliary cavity depth. By adjusting gap size or auxiliary cavity depth, the cavity resonance frequency is tuned to resonate partial tones of the bell sound. Finally, the optimal combination of gap size and auxiliary cavity depth is determined.

SOUND TRANSMISSION THROUGH PERIODICALLY STIFFENED CYLINDRICAL SHELLS
A relatively long circular cylindrical shell stiffened by periodically deployed stiffeners is found in many practical applications such as the aircraft fuselage. For the sound transmission analysis of such a system, not only structural interactions between the shell and stiffeners but also vibro-acoustic interactions between the structure and acoustic media have to be considered. By idealizing the system as an infinitely long cylinder subjected to a plane wave incidence, an exact solution is obtained for the first time for this type of problem. In the analysis, the solution is obtained in a series form by expanding the system responses in terms of the space harmonics of the stiffener spacing. Characteristics of the system responses and effects of important design parameters are studied using the transmission losses calculated from the analysis.

This paper describes a hybrid technique that combines Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) predictions for structural vibration with acoustic modal summation techniques to predict interior noise levels in rotorcraft. The method was applied for predicting the sound field inside a mock-up of the interior panel system of the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter. The vibration amplitudes of the frame and panel systems were predicted using a detailed SEA model and these were used as inputs to the model of the interior acoustic space. The spatial distribution of the vibration field on individual panels, and their coupling to the acoustic space were modeled using stochastic techniques. Leakage and nonresonant transmission components were accounted for using space-averaged values obtained from a SEA model of the complete structural-acoustic system. Since the cabin geometry was quite simple, the modeling of the interior acoustic space was performed using a standard modal summation technique. Sound pressure levels predicted by this approach at specific microphone locations were compared with measured data. Agreement within 3 dB in one-third octave bands above 40 Hz was observed. A large discrepancy in the one-third octave band in which the first acoustic mode is resonant (31.5 Hz) was observed. Reasons for such a discrepancy are discussed in the paper. The developed technique provides a method for modeling helicopter cabin interior noise in the frequency mid-range where neither FEA nor SEA is individually effective or accurate.

Active structural acoustic control(ASAC)is an efficient method in acoustic radiation control of coupled enclosure. In the past research of ASAC,the concept of "acoustic radiation mode(ARM)of coupled enclosure"was proposed, which was a set of basis functions of structural mode amplitude. However, there was an incompatibility with the ARM definition in free space radiation case which was a set of basic functions of normal velocity or pressure on the vibrating surface. Also, there was severe inconvenience for application as structural modes were required while accurate and useful structural modes were difficult to be extracted in practice. To overcome these problems,by analogy to ARM theory of free space, the acoustic potential energy was expressed in quadratic form of normal velocity on coupling surface and ARM of coupled enclosure was redefined.Furthermore, theoretic derivation showed that ARM of coupled enclosure could be replaced simply by corresponding acoustic mode projection of enclosure when the coupling surface was discretized into equal size elements. Therefore, the ARM theory of coupled enclosure which was consistent with that of free space and convenient for application was formed. Finally, numerical calculation was performed and the results proved that the presented theory was very efficient in ARM calculation of coupled enclosure and ASAC.

Vibro-acoustic analysis of a rectangular-like cavity with a tilted wall
In this paper, a fully coupled vibro-acoustic model is developed to characterize the structural and acoustic coupling of a flexible panel backed by a rectangular-like cavity with a slight geometrical distortion, which is introduced through a tilted wall. The combined integro-modal approach is used to handle the acoustic pressure inside the irregular-shaped cavity. Based on the model proposed, the distortion effect on the vibro-acoustic behavior of the coupled system is investigated using the averaged sound pressure level inside the enclosure and the averaged quadratic velocity of the vibrating plate. Simulations are conducted to examine the distortion effect on acoustic natural frequencies, acoustic pressures and structural responses. Effects of the wall inclination on coupling coefficients are also assessed, and an index is proposed to quantify the degree of variation of coupling strength.

In the context of the transmission of airborne noise into an aircraft fuselage, a mathematical model is presented for the effects of internal cavity resonances on sound transmission into a thin cylindrical shell. The “noise reduction” of the cylinder is defined and computed, with and without including the effects of internal cavity resonances. As would be expected, the noise reduction in the absence of cavity resonances follows the same qualitative pattern as does transmission loss. Numerical results show that cavity resonances lead to wide fluctuations and a general decrease of noise reduction, especially at cavity resonances. Modest internal absorption is shown to greatly reduce the effect of cavity resonances. The effects of external airflow, internal cabin pressurization, and different acoustical properties inside and outside the cylinder are also included and briefly examined.
