It may seem odd that Abel, a protagonist of Cauchy's new rigor, spoke of “exceptions” when he criticized Cauchy's theorem on the continuity of sums of continuous functions. However, when interpreted contextually, exceptions appear as both valid and viable entities in the early 19th century. First, Abel's use of the term “exception” and the role of the exception in his binomial paper is documented and analyzed. Second, it is suggested how Abel may have acquainted himself with the exception and his use of it in a process denoted critical revision is discussed. Finally, an interpretation of Abel's exception is given that identifies it as a representative example of a more general transition in the understanding of mathematical objects that took place during the period. With this interpretation, exceptions find their place in a fundamental transition during the early 19th century from a formal approach to analysis toward a more conceptual one.  相似文献

The existence of a zero for a holomorphic functions on a ball or on a rectangle under some sign conditions on the boundary generalizing Bolzano's ones for real functions on an interval is deduced in a very simple way from Cauchy's theorem for holomorphic functions.A more complicated proof,using Cauchy's argument principle,provides uniqueness of the zero,when the sign conditions on the boundary are strict.Applications are given to corresponding Brouwer fixed point theorems for holomorphic functions.Extensions to holomorphic mappings from Cn to Cn are obtained using Brouwer degree.  相似文献

In this paper, the linear nonhomogeneous integral equation of H-functions is considered to find a new form of H-function as its solution. The Wiener-Hopf technique is used to express a known function into two functions with different zones of analyticity. The linear nonhomogeneous integral equation is thereafter expressed into two different sets of functions having the different zones of regularity. The modified form of Liouville's theorem is thereafter used, Cauchy's integral formulae are used to determine functional representation over the cut region in a complex plane. The new form of H-function is derived both for conservative and nonconservative cases. The existence of solution of linear nonhomogeneous integral equations and its uniqueness are shown. For numerical calculation of this new H-function, a set of useful formulae are derived both for conservative and nonconservative cases.  相似文献

First we show that several fundamental results on functions from theBernstein spaces (such as Bernstein's inequality andthe reproducing formula) can be deduced from a weak form of the classicalsampling theorem. In §3 we discuss the mutual equivalence of thesampling theorem, the derivative sampling theorem and a harmonic functionsampling theorem. In §§4–6 we discuss connections between thesampling theorem and various important results in complex analysis andFourier analysis. Our considerations include Cauchy's integral formula,Poisson's summation formula, a Gaussian integral, certain properties ofweighted Hermite polynomials, Plancherel's theorem, the maximum modulusprinciple, and the Phragmén–Lindelöf principle.  相似文献
