Fabrication and results of high‐resolution X‐ray topography characterization of diamond single‐crystal plates with large surface area (10 mm × 10 mm) and (111) crystal surface orientation for applications in high‐heat‐load X‐ray crystal optics are reported. The plates were fabricated by laser‐cutting of the (111) facets of diamond crystals grown using high‐pressure high‐temperature methods. The intrinsic crystal quality of a selected 3 mm × 7 mm crystal region of one of the studied samples was found to be suitable for applications in wavefront‐preserving high‐heat‐load crystal optics. Wavefront characterization was performed using sequential X‐ray diffraction topography in the pseudo plane wave configuration and data analysis using rocking‐curve topography. The variations of the rocking‐curve width and peak position measured with a spatial resolution of 13 µm × 13 µm over the selected region were found to be less than 1 µrad.

Silicon saw‐tooth refractive lenses have been in successful use for vertical focusing and collimation of high‐energy X‐rays (50–100 keV) at the 1‐ID undulator beamline of the Advanced Photon Source. In addition to presenting an effectively parabolic thickness profile, as required for aberration‐free refractive optics, these devices allow high transmission and continuous tunability in photon energy and focal length. Furthermore, the use of a single‐crystal material (i.e. Si) minimizes small‐angle scattering background. The focusing performance of such saw‐tooth lenses, used in conjunction with the 1‐ID beamline's bent double‐Laue monochromator, is presented for both short (~1:0.02) and long (~1:0.6) focal‐length geometries, giving line‐foci in the 2 µm–25 µm width range with 81 keV X‐rays. In addition, a compound focusing scheme was tested whereby the radiation intercepted by a distant short‐focal‐length lens is increased by having it receive a collimated beam from a nearer (upstream) lens. The collimation capabilities of Si saw‐tooth lenses are also exploited to deliver enhanced throughput of a subsequently placed small‐angular‐acceptance high‐energy‐resolution post‐monochromator in the 50–80 keV range. The successful use of such lenses in all these configurations establishes an important detail, that the pre‐monochromator, despite being comprised of vertically reflecting bent Laue geometry crystals, can be brilliance‐preserving to a very high degree.

Single‐crystal diamond is a material with great potential for the fabrication of X‐ray photon beam‐position monitors with submicrometre spatial resolution. Low X‐ray absorption combined with radiation hardness and excellent thermal‐mechanical properties make possible beam‐transmissive diamond devices for monitoring synchrotron and free‐electron laser X‐ray beams. Tests were made using a white bending‐magnet synchrotron X‐ray beam at DESY to investigate the performance of a position‐sensitive diamond device using radiofrequency readout electronics. The device uniformity and position response were measured in a 25 µm collimated X‐ray beam with an I‐Tech Libera `Brilliance' system. This readout system was designed for position measurement and feedback control of the electron beam in the synchrotron storage ring, but, as shown here, it can also be used for accurate position readout of a quadrant‐electrode single‐crystal diamond sensor. The centre‐of‐gravity position of the F4 X‐ray beam at the DORIS III synchrotron was measured with the diamond signal output digitally sampled at a rate of 130 Msample s?1 by the Brilliance system. Narrow‐band filtering and digital averaging of the position signals resulted in a measured position noise below 50 nm (r.m.s.) for a 10 Hz bandwidth.

Results of measurements made at the SIRIUS beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron for a new X‐ray beam position monitor based on a super‐thin single crystal of diamond grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are presented. This detector is a quadrant electrode design processed on a 3 µm‐thick membrane obtained by argon–oxygen plasma etching the central area of a CVD‐grown diamond plate of 60 µm thickness. The membrane transmits more than 50% of the incident 1.3 keV energy X‐ray beam. The diamond plate was of moderate purity (~1 p.p.m. nitrogen), but the X‐ray beam induced current (XBIC) measurements nevertheless showed a photo‐charge collection efficiency approaching 100% for an electric field of 2 V µm?1, corresponding to an applied bias voltage of only 6 V. XBIC mapping of the membrane showed an inhomogeneity of more than 10% across the membrane, corresponding to the measured variation in the thickness of the diamond plate before the plasma etching process. The measured XBIC signal‐to‐dark‐current ratio of the device was greater than 105, and the X‐ray beam position resolution of the device was better than a micrometer for a 1 kHz sampling rate.

The performance of a diamond X‐ray beam position monitor is reported. This detector consists of an ionization solid‐state chamber based on a thin single‐crystal chemical‐vapour‐deposition diamond with position‐sensitive resistive electrodes in a duo‐lateral configuration. The detector's linearity, homogeneity and responsivity were studied on beamlines at Synchrotron SOLEIL with various beam sizes, intensities and energies. These measurements demonstrate the large and homogeneous (absorption variation of less than 0.7% over 500 µm × 500 µm) active area of the detector, with linear responses independent of the X‐ray beam spatial distribution. Due to the excellent charge collection efficiency (approaching 100%) and intensity sensitivity (0.05%), the detector allows monitoring of the incident beam flux precisely. In addition, the in‐beam position resolution was compared with a theoretical analysis providing an estimation of the detector's beam position resolution capability depending on the experimental conditions (X‐ray flux, energy and readout acquisition time).

Fabrication and testing of a prototype transmission‐mode pixelated diamond X‐ray detector (pitch size 60–100 µm), designed to simultaneously measure the flux, position and morphology of an X‐ray beam in real time, are described. The pixel density is achieved by lithographically patterning vertical stripes on the front and horizontal stripes on the back of an electronic‐grade chemical vapor deposition single‐crystal diamond. The bias is rotated through the back horizontal stripes and the current is read out on the front vertical stripes at a rate of ~1 kHz, which leads to an image sampling rate of ~30 Hz. This novel signal readout scheme was tested at beamline X28C at the National Synchrotron Light Source (white beam, 5–15 keV) and at beamline G3 at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (monochromatic beam, 11.3 keV) with incident beam flux ranges from 1.8 × 10?2 to 90 W mm?2. Test results show that the novel detector provides precise beam position (positional noise within 1%) and morphology information (error within 2%), with an additional software‐controlled single channel mode providing accurate flux measurement (fluctuation within 1%).

Point focusing measurements using pairs of directly bonded crossed multilayer Laue lenses (MLLs) are reported. Several flat and wedged MLLs have been fabricated out of a single deposition and assembled to realise point focusing devices. The wedged lenses have been manufactured by adding a stress layer onto flat lenses. Subsequent bending of the structure changes the relative orientation of the layer interfaces towards the stress‐wedged geometry. The characterization at ESRF beamline ID13 at a photon energy of 10.5 keV demonstrated a nearly diffraction‐limited focusing to a clean spot of 43 nm × 44 nm without significant side lobes with two wedged crossed MLLs using an illuminated aperture of approximately 17 µm × 17 µm to eliminate aberrations originating from layer placement errors in the full 52.7 µm × 52.7 µm aperture. These MLLs have an average individual diffraction efficiency of 44.5%. Scanning transmission X‐ray microscopy measurements with convenient working distances were performed to demonstrate that the lenses are suitable for user experiments. Also discussed are the diffraction and focusing properties of crossed flat lenses made from the same deposition, which have been used as a reference. Here a focal spot size of 28 nm × 33 nm was achieved and significant side lobes were noticed at an illuminated aperture of approximately 23 µm × 23 µm.

In this work a double‐crystal setup is employed to study compound refractive lenses made of single‐crystal diamond. The point spread function of the lens is calculated taking into account the lens transmission, the wavefront aberrations, and the ultra‐small‐angle broadening of the X‐ray beam. It is shown that, similarly to the wavefront aberrations, the ultra‐small‐angle scattering effects can significantly reduce the intensity gain and increase the focal spot size. The suggested approach can be particularly useful for the characterization of refractive X‐ray lenses composed of many tens of unit lenses.

A novel high‐energy multi‐lens interferometer consisting of 30 arrays of planar compound refractive lenses is reported. Under coherent illumination each lens array creates a diffraction‐limited secondary source. Overlapping such coherent beams produces an interference pattern demonstrating strong longitudinal functional dependence. The proposed multi‐lens interferometer was tested experimentally at the 100 m‐long ID11 ESRF beamline in the X‐ray energy range from 30 to 65 keV. The interference pattern generated by the interferometer was recorded at fundamental and fractional Talbot distances. An effective source size (FWHM) of the order of 15 µm was determined from the first Talbot image, proving the concept that the multi‐lens interferometer can be used as a high‐resolution tool for beam diagnostics.

A new prism‐array lens for high‐energy X‐ray focusing has been constructed using an array of different prisms obtained from different parabolic structures by removal of passive parts of material leading to a multiple of 2π phase variation. Under the thin‐lens approximation the phase changes caused by this lens for a plane wave are exactly the same as those caused by a parabolic lens without any additional corrections when they have the same focal length, which will provide good focusing; at the same time, the total transmission and effective aperture of this lens are both larger than those of a compound kinoform lens with the same focal length, geometrical aperture and feature size. This geometry can have a large aperture that is not limited by the feature size of the lens. Prototype nickel lenses with an aperture of 1.77 mm and focal length of 3 m were fabricated by LIGA technology, and were tested using CCD camera and knife‐edge scan method at the X‐ray Imaging and Biomedical Application Beamline BL13W1 at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and provided a focal width of 7.7 µm and a photon flux gain of 14 at an X‐ray energy of 50 keV.

X‐ray beam‐position stability is indispensable in cutting‐edge experiments using synchrotron radiation. Here, for the first time, a beam‐position feedback system is presented that utilizes an easy‐to‐use X‐ray beam‐position monitor incorporating a diamond‐fluorescence screen. The acceptable range of the monitor is above 500 µm and the feedback system maintains the beam position within 3 µm. In addition to being inexpensive, the system has two key advantages: it works without a scale factor for position calibration, and it has no dependence on X‐ray energy, X‐ray intensity, beam size or beam shape.

Ultra-high static pressures have been achieved in the laboratory using a two-stage micro-ball nanodiamond anvils as well as a two-stage micro-paired diamond anvils machined using a focused ion-beam system. The two-stage diamond anvils’ designs implemented thus far suffer from a limitation of one diamond anvil sliding past another anvil at extreme conditions. We describe a new method of fabricating two-stage diamond micro-anvils using a tungsten mask on a standard diamond anvil followed by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) homoepitaxial diamond growth. A prototype two-stage diamond anvil with 300?µm culet and with a CVD diamond second stage of 50?µm in diameter was fabricated. We have carried out preliminary high pressure X-ray diffraction studies on a sample of rare-earth metal lutetium sample with a copper pressure standard to 86?GPa. The micro-anvil grown by CVD remained intact during indentation of gasket as well as on decompression from the highest pressure of 86?GPa.

A single‐crystal momentum‐resolved resonant inelastic X‐ray scattering (RIXS) experiment under high pressure using an originally designed diamond anvil cell (DAC) is reported. The diamond‐in/diamond‐out geometry was adopted with both the incident and scattered beams passing through a 1 mm‐thick diamond. This enabled us to cover wide momentum space keeping the scattering angle condition near 90°. Elastic and inelastic scattering from the diamond was drastically reduced using a pinhole placed after the DAC. Measurement of the momentum‐resolved RIXS spectra of Sr2.5Ca11.5Cu24O41 at the Cu K‐edge was thus successful. Though the inelastic intensity becomes weaker by two orders than the ambient pressure, RIXS spectra both at the center and the edge of the Brillouin zone were obtained at 3 GPa and low‐energy electronic excitations of the cuprate were found to change with pressure.

High‐quality single‐crystal and polycrystalline chemical‐vapor‐deposition diamond detectors with platinum contacts have been tested at the white‐beam X28C beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source under high‐flux conditions. The voltage dependence of these devices has been measured under both DC and pulsed‐bias conditions, establishing the presence or absence of photoconductive gain in each device. Linear response consistent with the theoretically determined ionization energy has been achieved over eleven orders of magnitude when combined with previous low‐flux studies. Temporal measurements with single‐crystal diamond detectors have resolved the nanosecond‐scale pulse structures of both the NSLS and the APS. Prototype single‐crystal quadrant detectors have provided the ability to simultaneously resolve the X‐ray beam position and obtain a quantitative measurement of the flux.

Two transmission‐mode diamond X‐ray beam position monitors installed at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) beamline X25 are described. Each diamond beam position monitor is constructed around two horizontally tiled electronic‐grade (p.p.b. nitrogen impurity) single‐crystal (001) CVD synthetic diamonds. The position, angle and flux of the white X‐ray beam can be monitored in real time with a position resolution of 500 nm in the horizontal direction and 100 nm in the vertical direction for a 3 mm × 1 mm beam. The first diamond beam position monitor has been in operation in the white beam for more than one year without any observable degradation in performance. The installation of a second, more compact, diamond beam position monitor followed about six months later, adding the ability to measure the angular trajectory of the photon beam.

The application of lasers for processing diamond has revolutionized the diamond industry and its applications in microelectronics, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) and microoptoelectromechanical system (MOEMS) technologies. The process quality can be evaluated using spectroscopic techniques. In the present investigation, four different types of Q‐switched solid‐state lasers (with different beam parameters), namely, a lamp‐pumped Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm, a lamp‐pumped Nd:YAG laser operating at second harmonically generated 532 nm, a diode‐pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 1064 nm and a diode‐pumped Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm, have been employed for the processing of a single‐crystal, gem‐quality, natural diamond. The main objective behind the selection of these lasers with different beam parameters was to study the effect of wavelength, pulse width, pulse energy, peak power and beam quality factor (M2 factor) on various aspects of processing (such as microcracking, material loss and cut surface quality) and their relative merits and demerits. The overall weight loss of the diamond and formation of microcracks during processing have been studied for the above four cases. The characteristics of the graphite formed during processing, elemental analysis, surface morphology of the cut surface and process dynamics have been studied using micro‐Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We observed that laser cutting of single‐crystal diamonds used for industrial applications can be accomplished without microcracking or surface distortion using Q‐switched Nd:YAG lasers. This allows direct processing without extensive postgrinding and polishing stages. Very efficient diamond processing is possible using diode‐pumped lasers, which results in the lowest possible breakage rate, good accuracy, good surface finish and low weight loss. From the micro‐Raman and SEM studies, it is concluded that the surface quality obtained is superior when diode‐pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is used, owing to its extremely high peak power. The maximum graphite content is observed while processing with lamp‐pumped Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. An overall comparison of all the laser sources leads to the conclusion that diode‐pumped Nd:YAG laser is a superior option for the efficient processing of natural diamond crystals. Synchrotron radiation from third‐generation high‐brilliance storage rings is an ideal source for X‐ray microbeams. The aim of this paper is to describe a microfocusing scheme that combines both a toroidal mirror and Kirkpatrick–Baez (KB) mirrors for upgrading the existing optical system for inelastic X‐ray scattering experiments at sector 3 of the Advanced Photon Source. SHADOW ray‐tracing simulations without considering slope errors of both the toroidal mirror and KB mirrors show that this combination can provide a beam size of 4.5 µm (H) × 0.6 µm (V) (FWHM) at the end of the existing D‐station (66 m from the source) with use of full beam transmission of up to 59%, and a beam size of 3.7 µm (H) × 0.46 µm (V) (FWHM) at the front‐end of the proposed E‐station (68 m from the source) with a transmission of up to 52%. A beam size of about 5 µm (H) × 1 µm (V) can be obtained, which is close to the ideal case, by using high‐quality mirrors (with slope errors of less than 0.5 µrad r.m.s.). Considering the slope errors of the existing toroidal and KB mirrors (5 and 2.9 µrad r.m.s., respectively), the beam size grows to about 13.5 µm (H) × 6.3 µm (V) at the end of the D‐station and to 12.0 µm (H) × 6.0 µm (V) at the front‐end of the proposed E‐station. The simulations presented here are compared with the experimental measurements that are significantly larger than the theoretical values even when slope error is included in the simulations. This is because of the experimental set‐up that could not yet be optimized.

Clessidra (hour‐glass) X‐ray lenses have an overall shape of an old hour glass, in which two opposing larger triangular prisms are formed of smaller identical prisms or prism‐like objects. In these lenses, absorbing and otherwise optically inactive material was removed with a material‐removal strategy similar to that used by Fresnel in the lighthouse lens construction. It is verified that when the single prism rows are incoherently illuminated they can be operated as independent micro‐lenses with coinciding image positions for efficient X‐ray beam concentration. Experimental data for the line width and the refraction efficiency in one‐dimensional focusing are consistent with the expectations. Imperfections in the structures produced by state‐of‐the‐art deep X‐ray lithography directed only 35% of the incident intensity away from the image and widened it by just 10% to 125 µm. An array of micro‐lenses with easily feasible prism sizes is proposed as an efficient retrofit for the refocusing optics in an existing beamline, where it would provide seven‐fold flux enhancement.
