Strongly Phosphorescent Iridium(III)-Porphyrins - New Oxygen Indicators with Tuneable Photophysical Properties and Functionalities

Synthesis and characterization of four iridium(III)-octaethylporphyrins and a π-extended iridium(III)-benzoporphyrin are presented. Strong room-temperature phosphorescence was observed for all of the complexes with quantum yields of up to 30 %. Axial ligands were introduced to tune the photophysical properties and the solubility. Complexes bearing lipophilic ligands such as pyridine or N-(n-butyl)imidazole were incorporated into polystyrene to obtain optical oxygen sensors. Covalent coupling of the dye is possible by introduction of ligands with binding domains (1-imidazoleacetic acid). This enabled preparation of a water-soluble oxygen probe (by staining bovine serum albumin) and a trace oxygen sensor (by coupling to amino-modified silica gel).     

Characterization of ethylene oxide–propylene oxide block copolymers by combination of different chromatographic techniques and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy

Block copolymers of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) are characterized by combination of two-dimensional chromatography and MALDI-TOF-MS. Liquid chromatography under critical conditions (LCCC) is used as first dimension and fractions are collected, mobile phase evaporated and diluted in the mobile phase used in second dimension (SEC or LAC). This two-dimensional chromatography in combination of MALDI-TOF-MS gives information about purity of reaction products, presence of the byproducts, chemical composition and molar mass distribution of all the products.     

SARs of the antiprotozoal action of 6,7-diaryl-bicyclo[2.2.2]octan-2-ols

Abstract  

Several 4-amino-6,7-diarylbicyclo[2.2.2]octan-2-ols bearing varying substituents on the aromatic rings were synthesized following a manual method for applying the Hansch approach. All new compounds were tested for their activity against the causative organisms of East African sleeping sickness and malaria tropica. Structure activity relationships are discussed.     

Bicyclic amido compounds with antiprotozoal activity

Abstract  

Aroyl derivatives of 2-aminobicyclo-octanes and 2-azabicyclo-nonanes have been synthesized and tested for their activities against the causative organisms of East African trypanosomiasis and malaria tropica. The acylation induced in general loss of antiprotozoal activity, but a single compound showed good antiplasmodial activity against a multiresistant strain of Plasmodium falciparum.     

Preparation and Radical Oligomerization of anFe(II) Complex without Loss of Spin-Crossover Properties

Summary.  11-(4H-1,2,4-Triazol-4-yl)-undecylmethacrylate (1), a new ligand for Fe(II) spin-crossover (SCO) complexes containing a polymerizable group, was synthesized and characterized. The complex [Fe·1 ₃](BF₄)₂ (2) was obtained by reaction of 1 with Fe(BF₄)₂·6H₂O (molar ratio 1/Fe(II) = 3/1) in THF. Complex 2 showed a gradual spin-crossover between 80 and 230 K. The methacrylate units in the ligands of complex 2 could be oligomerized radically in solution (initiator: azoisobutyronitrile) without loss of the spin-crossover behaviour. Received May 30, 2000. Antiprotozoal Activities of Epimeric Aminobicycles

Summary. We synthesized several 4-aminobicyclo[2.2.2] octan-2-ols and 4-amino-2-azabicyclo[3.2.2]nonanes from epimerized 4-amino-bicyclo[2.2.2]octan-2-ones. The new compounds were tested for their activity against Trypanosoma b. rhodesiense, the causative organism of East African sleeping sickness, and Plasmodium falciparum K ₁, a multiresistant protozoan parasite which causes Malaria tropica. The results are compared to the activities of their formerly synthesized stereoisomers and structure–activity relationships are discussed.

4-Aminobicyclo[2.2.2]octan-2-ones and -ols showed activity against the causative organisms of East African sleeping sickness and Malaria tropica. Several imino derivatives of the ketones were more active. Now hydrazono analogues and 3-hydroximino derivatives of the ketones and alcohols were synthesized. The structures of the obtained isomers were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. A single phenylhydrazone exhibited quite good antitrypanosomal activity in the range of already known imino analogues.
