Summary Three polarographic micro-methods are described for the determination of sulphur in organic compounds after oxygen-flask combustion. The products are converted into sulphuric acid by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, the excess of which is expelled through boiling. The methods are based upon allowing the sulphuric acid to react with an excess of barium iodate or bromate, then recording polarographically the cathodic reduction wave of the iodate or bromate ion. The bromate methods are superior to the iodate method being simpler and more rapid, and the results are correct to within ca. ±0.5%.

Up to 100 microg of sample can be collected from gold or silver alloys by rubbing the specimen with the ground hemispherical tip of a 4-mm Pyrex glass rod. Gold alloys are then dissolved in potassium cyanide solution containing hydrogen peroxide; silver alloys are exposed to vapours of nitric acid. Procedures for transfer, ring oven separation and identification of alloy constituents in the sample solutions are described.

Summary Rapid indirect polarographic and visual micromethods have been developed for the determination of the quinone and azoxy groups by reduction with titanium(III) at pH values of 3 and 5.5, respectively. The excess of reductant is first determined polarographically followed by visual back-titration of the same solution with iron(III) using thiocyanate as indicator a drop of neutral red is added in case of the quinone function. Although the results obtained by the two finishes are of approximately the same order of accuracy (±0.46%), yet the polarographic finish proved to be of more general applicability particularly for quinones that give rise, after reduction, to a variety of colours on adding the iron(III) solution.

Summary Simple and accurate methods are described for the microdetermination of arsenate and arsenite ions using 12- and 14-fold amplification reactions. The arsenate method is based upon reaction with calcium iodate and iodometric titration of the liberated iodate, whereas the arsenite method depends upon reaction with iodine and oxidation of the resulting iodide with bromine. This is followed by iodometric titration of the iodate in addition to the arsenate present in solution. The overall recovery amounts to 99.51 and 99.63% for arsenate and arsenite respectively.

Micromethods are described for the determination of organic sulfoxides and disulfides based on reduction with titanium (III) sulfate solution, the excess of which is titrated with standard ferric alum as usual. The procedures developed depended on the nature of the compound whether aromatic or aliphatic. Quantitative reduction of sulfoxides was achieved in presence of ammonium thiocyanate and sodium acetate but whereas aryl sulfoxides required heating at 70 °C for 30 minutes, the alkyl members demanded heating at 90 °C for one hour. Complete reduction of disulfides was possible in presence of acetate buffer and heating at 50 °C for 15 minutes for aromatic disulfides and at 80 °C for 30 minutes in case of the aliphatic ones. a Calculated by dividing the total titer in a ratio of 2:12. b Calculated using the total titer consumed. Sulfonyl halides, thiocyanates, and isothiocyanates do not react with the titanium(III) solution. The effect of the various sulfur functions on the determination of the nitro group with titanium(III) was also studied and various nitro-substituted sulfur compounds were successfully analyzed.
