This paper is devoted to the stationary problem of third-grade fluids in two and three dimensions. In two dimensions, we show existence of solutions and uniqueness, for a boundary of class C2,1 and small data, by generalizing the method used by J.M. Bernard for the stationary problem of second-grade fluids (we deal with a polynomial of four degrees instead of two degrees). Contrary to the case of two dimensions, the resolution of the problem of third-grade fluids in three dimensions requires the physical condition |α1+α2|<(24νβ)1/2. From this condition, we derive two “pseudo ellipticities” for the operator ν|A(u)|2+(α1+α2)tr(A(u)3)+β|A(u)|4, where A(u) is a 3-order symmetric matrix such that tr(A(u))=0. Thus, with, in addition, a sharp estimate of the scalar product (|A(u)|2A(u)-|A(v)|2A(v),A(u)-A(v)), we are able to prove existence of solutions and uniqueness, for a boundary of class C2,1 and small data, in three dimensions.

Cet article est consacré au problème stationnaire des fluides de grade trois en dimension deux et trois. En dimension deux, nous montrons l’existence de solutions et l’unicité, pour une frontière de classe C2,1 et une donnée petite, en généralisant la méthode utilisée par J.M. Bernard pour le problème stationnaire des fluides de grade deux (nous avons affaire à un polynôme de degré quatre au lieu de deux). Contrairement au cas de la dimension deux, la résolution du problème des fluides de grade trois en dimension trois requière la condition physique |α1+α2|<(24νβ)1/2. De cette condition, nous déduisons deux “pseudo matrice” pour l’opérateur ν|A(u)|2+(α1+α2)tr(A(u)3)+β|A(u)|4, où A(u) est une matice symétrique d’ordre 3 à trace nulle. We present a form of the Mean Value Theorem (MVT) for a continuous function f between metric spaces, connecting it with the possibility to choose the relation of f in a homeomorphic way. We also compare our formulation of the MVT with the classic one when the metric spaces are open subsets of Banach spaces. In this article, we examine Hohenberg–Kohn theorems for Current Density Functional Theory, that is, generalizations of the classical Hohenberg–Kohn theorem that includes both electric and magnetic fields. In the Vignale and Rasolt formulation (Vignale and Rasolt, Phys. Rev. Lett. 1987, 59, 2360), which uses the paramagnetic current density, we address the issue of degenerate ground states and prove that the ensemble‐representable particle and paramagnetic current density determine the degenerate ground states. For the formulation that uses the total current density, we note that the proof suggested by Diener (Diener, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter. 1991, 3, 9417) is unfortunately not correct. Furthermore, we give a proof that the magnetic field and the ensemble‐representable particle density determine the scalar and vector potentials up to a gauge transformation. This generalizes the result of Grayce and Harris (Grayce and Harris, Phys. Rev. A 1994, 50, 3089) to the case of degenerate ground states. Consider the lattice of bounded linear operators on the space of Borel measures on a Polish space. We prove that the operators which are continuous with respect to the weak topology induced by the bounded measurable functions form a sublattice that is lattice isomorphic to the space of transition kernels. In this paper we generalize a partial integrodifferential equation satisfied by the finite time ruin probability in the classical Poisson risk model. The generalization also includes the bivariate distribution function of the time of and the deficit at ruin. We solve the partial integrodifferential equation by Laplace transforms with the help of Lagrange’s implicit function theorem. The assumption of mixed Erlang claim sizes is then shown to result in tractable computational formulas for the finite time ruin probability as well as the bivariate distribution function of the time of and the deficit at ruin. Using the concepts of L?wdin pairing theorem, a method is developed to calculate extremely localized, but nonorthogonal, sets of molecular orbitals and their strictly localized counterparts.
