We utilized bulk‐synthesized nanowires (NWs) of germanium dioxide as nanoscale structures that can be coated with noble metals to allow the excitation of surface plasmons over a broad frequency range. The NWs were synthesized on substrates of silicon using gold‐catalyst‐assisted vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth mechanism in a simple quartz tube furnace setup. The resulting NWs have diameters of ∼100–200 nm, with lengths averaging ∼10–40 µm and randomly distributed on the substrate. The NWs are subsequently coated with thin films of gold, which provide a surface‐plasmon‐active surface. Surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) studies with near‐infrared (NIR) excitation at 785 nm show significant enhancement (average enhancement > 106) with good uniformity to detect submonolayer concentrations of 4‐methylbenzenethiol (4‐MBT), trans‐1,2‐bis(4‐pyridyl)ethylene (BPE), and 1,2‐benzendithiol (1,2‐BDT) probe molecules. We also observed an intense, broad continuum in the Raman spectrum of NWs after metal coating, which tended to diminish with the analyte monolayer formation. We present a high‐throughput method for fabricating large arrays of surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active gold dimers. Using a large‐area/low‐cost nanopatterning method in conjunction with a meniscus force deposition technique, we were able to create large arrays of uniformly spaced nanoclusters comprising two 60‐nm gold nanospheres. Raman measurements of a thiophenol monolayer deposited on smaller scale arrays of aligned dimers yielded enhancement factors as high as 109. Polarization‐controlled measurements show spectral peak heights to be 10–100 times smaller when the incident beam is polarized perpendicularly to the dimer axis, confirming that the measured enhancements arise from the ‘hot spots’ between the two nanospheres. A method employing photochemical hole burning, previously developed to measure the distribution of Raman enhancement factors on a nanostructured substrate for surface‐enhanced Raman scattering, is used to compare the enhancement distributions of benzenethiol adsorbed on substrates optimized for 532 nm laser excitation consisting of close‐packed (CP) or nonclose‐packed (NCP) nanospheres. The ensemble‐averaged Raman enhancement factor was 2.8 times smaller for the NCP substrate. The measured distributions revealed additional information. For instance, 92% of the molecules on the CP substrate and 93.6% of the molecules on the NCP substrate had Raman enhancements below average. The minimum enhancements on both substrates were ~104, but on the NCP substrate the maximum enhancement was 1.2 × 108, whereas on the CP substrate the maximum was 2 × 1010. The Ag‐coated nanospheres form hemisphere‐on‐cylinder mushroom‐like structures on both lattices, but on the NCP lattice, one third of the molecules are on the flat regions between the mushrooms. The flats on the NCP lattice have enhancements of ~104, showing they are part of a resonant plasmonic structure. The highest NCP enhancements of ~108 are tentatively associated with regions at the bases of the mushrooms, whereas the highest CP enhancements of 2 × 1010 are tentatively associated with gaps between nanospheres where 0.0025% of the molecules reside. The absolute Raman scattering cross section (σRS) for the 1584‐cm−1 band of benzenethiol at 897 nm (1.383 eV) has been measured to be 8.9 ± 1.8 × 10−30 cm2 using a 785‐nm pump laser. A temperature‐controlled, small‐cavity blackbody source was used to calibrate the signal output of the Raman spectrometer. We also measured the absolute surface‐enhanced Raman scattering cross section (σSERS) of benzenethiol adsorbed onto a silver‐coated, femtosecond laser‐nanostructured substrate. Using the measured values of 8.9 ± 1.8 × 10−30 and 6.6 ± 1.3 × 10−24 cm2 for σRS and σSERS respectively, we calculate an average cross‐section enhancement factor (EF) of 0.8 ± 0.3 × 106. We study the optical properties of a single, semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) that is partially suspended across a trench and partially supported by a SiO2-substrate. By tuning the laser excitation energy across the E 33 excitonic resonance of the suspended CNT segment, the scattering intensities of the principal Raman transitions, the radial breathing mode (RBM), the D mode and the G mode show strong resonance enhancement of up to three orders of magnitude. In the supported part of the CNT, despite a loss of Raman scattering intensity of up to two orders of magnitude, we recover the E 33 excitonic resonance suffering a substrate-induced red shift of 50 meV. The peak intensity ratio between G band and D band is highly sensitive to the presence of the substrate and varies by one order of magnitude, demonstrating the much higher defect density in the supported CNT segments. By comparing the E 33 resonance spectra measured by Raman excitation spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectroscopy in the suspended CNT segment, we observe that the peak energy in the PL excitation spectrum is red-shifted by 40 meV. This shift is associated with the energy difference between the localized exciton dominating the PL excitation spectrum and the free exciton giving rise to the Raman excitation spectrum. High-resolution Raman spectra reveal substrate-induced symmetry breaking, as evidenced by the appearance of additional peaks in the strongly broadened Raman G band. Laser-induced line shifts of RBM and G band measured on the suspended CNT segment are both linear as a function of the laser excitation power. Stokes/anti-Stokes measurements, however, reveal an increase of the G phonon population while the RBM phonon population is rather independent of the laser excitation power.  相似文献

Raman spectra of the monocytes were recorded with laser excitation at 532, 785, 830, and 244 nm. The measurements of the Raman spectra of monocytes excited with visible, near‐infrared (NIR), and ultraviolet (UV) lasers lad to the following conclusions. (1) The Raman peak pattern of the monocytes can be easily distinguished from those of HeLa and yeast cells; (2) Positions of the Raman peaks of the dried cell are in coincidence with those of the monocytes in a culture cell media. However, the relative intensities of the peaks are changed: the peak centered around 1045 cm−1 is strongly intensified. (3) Raman spectra of the dead monocytes are similar to those of living cells with only one exception: the Raman peak centered around 1004 cm−1 associated with breathing mode of phenylalanine is strongly intensified. The Raman spectra of monocytes excited with 244‐nm UV laser were measured on cells in a cell culture medium. A peak centered at 1485 cm−1 dominates the UV Raman spectra of monocytes. The ratio I1574/I1613 for monocytes is found to be around 0.71. This number reflects the ratio between proteins and DNA content inside a cell and it is found to be twice as high as that of E. coli and 5 times as high as that of gram‐positive bacteria. Zinc oxide nanowires with two distinct morphologies were synthesized on silicon substrates using a simple thermal evaporation and vapor transport method in an oxidizing environment. The as‐synthesized nanowires were coated with gold to allow excitation of surface plasmons over a broad frequency range. SERS studies with near‐IR excitation at 785 nm showed significant enhancement (average enhancement > 106) with excellent reproducibility to detect monolayer concentrations of 4‐methylbenzenethiol (4‐MBT) and 1,2‐benzendithiol (1,2‐BDT) probe molecules. The Raman enhancement showed a strong dependence on the gold film thickness, and the peak enhancement was observed for a ∼40‐nm‐thick film. The Raman enhancement was stronger for randomly oriented nanowires compared to aligned ones suggesting the importance of contributions from the junctions of nanowires. High‐pressure Raman measurements on single‐wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been carried out in a diamond anvil cell by using two wavelength lasers: 830 and 514.5 nm. Irrespective of using a pressure transmitting medium (PTM) or not, we found that nanotubes undergo similar transformations under pressure. The pressure‐induced changes in Raman signals at around 2 and 5 GPa are attributed to the nanotube cross‐section transitions from circle to ellipse and then to a flattened shape, respectively. Especially with pressure increasing up to 15–17 GPa, we observed that the third transition takes place in both the Raman wavenumber and the linewidth of G‐band. We propose explanations that the interlinked configuration with sp3 bonds forms in the bundles of SWNTs under pressure, which was the cause for the occurrence of those Raman anomalies, similar to the structural‐phase transition of graphite above 14 GPa. Our TEM observations and Raman measurements on the decompressed samples support this transition picture. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We report the study of crystallographic orientation of a highly anisotropic square‐shaped single wurtzite GaN nanotube (NT) probed by polarized Raman imaging. The polarization‐dependent Raman intensities are collected in two mutually orthogonal directions with respect to the NT long axis. Variation in intensities of symmetry allowed A1(LO) mode of GaN with two different polarization directions reveals the possible crystalline orientations in the NT. The polarized Raman spectral imaging illustrates the fact of inhomogeneous crystalline orientations along the edges of the NT facets owing to its finite wall thickness. The deviation of polarization selection rule for GaN is attributed to the geometrical anisotropy of the NT. Electron microscopic structural data confirms the spectral imaging analyses. Multiphonon resonant Raman scattering in N‐doped ZnO films was studied, and an enhancement of the resonant Raman scattering process as well as longitudinal optical (LO) phonon overtones up to the sixth order were observed at room temperature. The resonant Raman scattering intensity of the 1LO phonon in N‐doped ZnO appears three times as strong as that of undoped ZnO, which mainly arises from the defect‐induced Raman scattering caused by N‐doping. The nature of the 1LO phonon at 578 cm−1 is interpreted as a quasimode with mixed A1 and E1 symmetry because of the defects formed in the ZnO lattice. In addition, the previously neglected impurity‐induced two‐LO‐phonon scattering process was clearly observed in N‐doped ZnO.

We have been able to observe the surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from 4‐mercaptopyridine (4‐Mpy) molecules adsorbed on ZnO nanocrystals, which display 103 enhancement factors (EFs). An excitation wavelength‐dependent behavior is clearly observed. Another molecule BVPP is also observed to have surface‐enhanced Raman signals. The chemical enhancement is most likely responsible for the observed enhancement, since plasmon resonances are ruled out. The research is important not only for a better understanding of the SERS mechanism, but also for extension of the application of Raman spectroscopy to a variety of adsorption problems on a semiconductor surface. We report for the first time the tip‐enhancement of resonance Raman scattering using deep ultraviolet (DUV) excitation wavelength. The tip‐enhancement was successfully demonstrated with an aluminum‐coated silicon tip that acts as a plasmonic material in DUV wavelengths. Both the crystal violet and adenine molecules, which were used as test samples, show electronic resonance at the 266‐nm excitation used in the experiments. With results demonstrated here, molecular analysis and imaging with nanoscale spatial resolution in DUV resonance Raman spectroscopy can be realized using the tip‐enhancement effect. Approximately 102‐fold enhancement of Raman scattering by ultramarine microcrystals is reported by means of interaction with silver nanoparticles in films and powders. Theoretical modeling predicts the maximal 1010‐fold enhancement in close vicinity of a silver spherical nanoparticle (0.24 nm) with rapid decay of enhancement factor to 1 in the range of approximately 50 nm. Experimental enhancement factor is treated as overall effect within the small portion of every microcrystal in the close vicinity of silver nanoparticle(s). The results are considered as an important extension of traditional surface enhanced molecular Raman spectroscopy towards bigger inorganic probes. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We demonstrate tip‐heating‐assisted enhanced Raman spectroscopy to investigate the temperature dependence of the carbon nanotube G‐band with nanoscale resolution. The controllable and nanoscale heat generated at the tip apex was used to thermally perturb and characterize a small volume in a carbon nanotube sample that is precisely positioned underneath the tip. The dependence of tip enhancement with temperature was also experimentally examined, which is in good agreement with the enhancement calculated from the electromagnetic model of isolated spheroids. The technique presented may open up opportunities in the study of controlled heat‐assisted biochemical reactions and physical transformations of nanostructures. It can also be used for thermal characterization of various materials requiring site‐selective and controllable nanoscale heat source and could enable the realization of new photothermal devices. We report on investigations upon a surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate produced from a two‐dimensional single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network decorated with Ag nanoparticles. Using the strong and unique Raman spectrum of SWNTs as a reference, the SWNT/Ag nanostructure can be considered to provide two regions: one with an ultrasensitive SERS response for single‐molecule SERS (SMSERS) study; and another with uniform SERS enhancement over an area of several square millimeters for general SERS measurements. We report the appearance of an anomalous Raman feature at around 2180 cm−1 in the high‐sensitivity region which exhibits the characteristics of SMSERS. The SERS performance of the uniform area was characterized using pyridine vapor adsorbed onto the substrate. The presence of the SWNT/Ag nanostructure enhanced the Raman intensity by over seven orders of magnitude, a factor comparable to or exceeding that obtained on SERS substrates reported by other groups. The results indicate great potential to produce highly sensitive, uniform SERS substrates via further fine‐tuning of the nanostructure. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Raman spectra of single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) either in the form of micrometer sized bundles or thin layers prepared by dilution and sonication of powders have been compared. We have been able to collect the Raman spectrum of nanotube bundles that are not in touch with the substrate, and therefore not affected by interactions with the substrate surface. This spectrum resulted to be similar to that of the precursor nanotube powders, whereas relevant changes in the Raman spectrum are detected when the diluted powders form very thin layers on either metallic or insulating surfaces, as probed by confocal microraman imaging on well defined areas of the CNTs layers. In the case of thin layers, the intensity of the Raman D band, detected between 1 320 and 1 340 cm-1 and ascribed to disorder effects, is strongly enhanced. This enhancement occurs independently on the kind of substrate. Received 2 September 2002 Published online 4 February 2003 RID="a" ID="a"e-mail: sangalet@dmf.bs.unicatt.it  相似文献

We presented a controlled particles‐in‐cavity (PIC) pattern for surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. The periodic gold cavity array was fabricated by electrodeposition using highly ordered polystyrene spheres as a template. The as‐prepared gold cavities can be used as a SERS active substrate with significant spectral enhancement and reproducibility, which was evaluated by SERS signals using 4‐mercaptobenzoic acid (4‐MBA) as probe molecules. The surface of these gold cavities was further functionalized with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide molecules, which may immobilize the 4‐MBA‐modified silver nanoparticles in the gold cavity to form a PIC structure via the electrostatic interaction. We have demonstrated that there exists a pH window for the immobilization of the nanoparticles inside cavities. Therefore, the silver nanoparticles can be selectively immobilized into the functionalized gold cavities under the optimized pH value of the media. Further enhancement of the Raman scattering of the labeled molecules can be achieved due to the interconnection between the silver nanoparticles and gold cavity. We investigate with Raman spectroscopy how gold nanostructures of different shape, size and geometry locally modify a graphene cover layer through strain. The resulting phonon softening translates into frequency downshifts of up to 85 cm–1 for the 2D‐mode of graphene. With spatially resolved and excitation dependent Raman measurements we demonstrate that the downshifted Raman peaks exclusively arise from strained graphene subject to plasmonic enhancement by the nanostructures. The signals arise from an area well below the size of the laser spot. They serve as a local probe for the interaction between graphene and intense light fields. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The capability of anti‐Stokes/Stokes Raman spectroscopy to evaluate chemical interactions at the interface of a conducting polymer/carbon nanotubes is demonstrated. Electrochemical polymerisation of the monomer 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) on a Au support covered with a single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) film immersed in a LiClO4/CH3CN solution was carried out. At the resonant optical excitation, which occurs when the energy of the exciting light coincides with the energy of an electronic transition, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) deposited electrochemically as a thin film of nanometric thickness on a rough Au support presents an abnormally intense anti‐Stokes Raman spectrum. The additional increase in Raman intensity in the anti‐Stokes branch observed when PEDOT is deposited on SWNTs is interpreted as resulting from the excitation of plasmons in the metallic nanotubes. A covalent functionalisation of SWNTs with PEDOT both in un‐doped and doped states takes place when the electropolymerisation of EDOT, with stopping at +1.6 V versus Ag/Ag+, is performed on a SWNT film deposited on a Au plate. The presence of PEDOT covalently functionalised SWNTs is rationalised by (1) a downshift by a few wavenumbers of the polymer Raman line associated with the symmetric C C stretching mode and (2) an upshift of the radial breathing modes of SWNTs, both variations revealing an interaction between SWNTs and the conjugated polymer. Raman studies performed at different excitation wavelengths indicate that the resonant optical excitation is the key condition to observe the abnormal anti‐Stokes Raman effect.
