Bunch transverse emittance increase in electron storage rings

In this paper a theoretical framework to estimate the bunch transverse emittance growing in electron storage rings due to short range transverse wakefield of the machine is established. New equilibrium emittance equations are derived and applied to explain the experimentally obtained results in ATF damping ring. This equation will be useful for linear collider damping ring design.     

Extremely low vertical-emittance beam in the accelerator test facility at KEK

Electron beams with the lowest, normalized transverse emittance recorded so far were produced and confirmed in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. We established a tuning method of the damping ring which achieves a small vertical dispersion and small x-y orbit coupling. The vertical emittance was less than 1% of the horizontal emittance. At the zero-intensity limit, the vertical normalized emittance was less than 2.8 x 10(-8) rad m at beam energy 1.3 GeV. At high intensity, strong effects of intrabeam scattering were observed, which had been expected in view of the extremely high particle density due to the small transverse emittance.     

国际未来直线对撞机(ILC)阻尼环Lattice设计

为了使国际未来直线对撞机达到高的亮度, 对撞机的阻尼环必须要有很小的自然发射度. 同时, 阻尼环要有很大的接收度来接受来自正电子注入系统的大能散、大发射度的正电子束团. 对于磁聚焦结构的设计来说, 同时达到以上要求是一件很有挑战性的工作. 为了降低ILC阻尼环的造价采用修正的FODO结构设计了可以满足ILC要求的阻尼环备用Lattice, 并使四极磁铁的数量比起ILC阻尼环BCD设计减少了一半.     

Transverse emittance blow-up from beam injection errors in synchrotrons with nonlinear feedback systems

The problem of transverse emittance blow-up from beam injection errors in synchrotrons with nonlinear feedback systems is considered. The relative emittance growth is calculated for linear and nonlinear feedback transfer functions. Effects of an increase of the damping decrement of the beam coherent oscillations and of a decrease of the coherent transverse amplitude spread of different bunches in case of the damper with a positive cubic term in the feedback transfer function are discussed. International Linear Collider damping ring lattice design with two wiggler sections

The International Linear Collider (ILC), which is based on super-conducting RF acceleration technology, requires the damping rings to provide beams with extremely small equilibrium emittance, and large acceptance to ensure good injection efficiency for high-emittance, and high-energy spread beam from the positron source. In order to reduce the cost for ILC damping rings, an alternative lattice which is different from the baseline configuration design has been designed with modified FODO arc cells, and the total quadrupole number has been reduced by half. At the same time, to decrease the total cost involved in constructing access shafts needed to supply power, cryogenics etc. for the wigglers and other systems, the number of wiggler sections is decreased from 8 to 4, and further to 2. This new lattice has been optimized to have a good dynamic aperture. This alternative ILC damping ring lattice design will reduce the cost largely as compared with the baseline design.     

HLS储存环束流发射度研究

 研究了合肥光源(HLS)储存环束流发射度与其长直线节消色散条件之间的关系；在考虑到H函数的匹配时，计算了储存环最低束流发射度；为光源多种运行模式提供了理论依据。     

Achievement of ultralow emittance beam in the accelerator test facility damping ring

For high luminosity in electron-positron linear colliders, it is essential to generate low vertical emittance beams. We report on the smallest vertical emittance achieved in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility, which satisfies the requirement of the x-band linear collider. The emittances were measured with a laser-wire beam-profile monitor installed in the damping ring. The bunch length and the momentum spread of the beam were also recorded under the same conditions. The smallest vertical rms emittance measured at low intensity is 4 pm at a beam energy of 1.3 GeV, which corresponds to the normalized emittance of 1.0x1.0(-8) m. It increases by a factor of 1.5 for a bunch intensity of 10(10) electrons. The measured data agreed to the calculation of intrabeam scattering within much better than a factor of 2.     

ESRF-type lattice design and optimization for the High Energy Photon Source

A new generation of storage ring-based light sources,called diffraction-limited storage rings(DLSRs),with emittance approaching the diffraction limit for multi-keV photons by means of multi-bend achromat lattices,has attracted extensive studies worldwide.Among various DLSR proposals,the hybrid multi-bend achromat concept developed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility(ESRF) predicts an effective way of minimizing the emittance while keeping the required chromatic sextupole strengths to an achievable level.For the High Energy Photon Source planned to be built in Beijing,an ESRF-type lattice design consisting of 48 hybrid seven-bend achromats is proposed to reach emittance as low as 60 pm-rad with a circumference of about 1296 m.Sufficient dynamic aperture,allowing vertical on-axis injection,and moderate momentum acceptance are achieved simultaneously for a promising ring performance.     

国际直线对撞机的参数选择

给出了确定直线对撞机参数的一般程序, 作为一个例子, 给出了超低束团电量时的参数表. 文章的主要目的是说明束流参数和对撞点以及阻尼环之间的相互制约关系. 对于17km的阻尼环, 它的能量被建议由5GeV升到7GeV. 然而,对于6km的阻尼环能量为5GeV是合理的.     

高能光源增强器束流横向尺寸测量系统设计

高能同步辐射光源的增强器将直线加速器注入的束流加速到储存环所需的能量,为储存环提供高品质的电子束。为了对增强器的束流横向截面尺寸、发射度及能散进行测量,设计了两条可见光-紫外波段的束测光束线。两条光束线分别选取无色散和色散较大的两处弯铁位置作为光源点,使用两套同步光成像系统来监测光源点的束流截面尺寸,并计算束流发射度及能散。介绍了同步光引出真空室及光学成像系统,对影响成像质量的空间分辨率进行了分析,并针对升能过程中不同能量下束流光斑变化的测量进行了设计。     

Simulation and analysis of the transverse spectrum in HIRFL-CSR

Particles in a storage ring oscillate in the longitudinal and transverse dimensions. Therefore, the signal that beam has generated can be analyzed in the frequency domain to extract many beam parameters, such as tune, momentum spread, emittance and their evolution with time and so on. In this paper, the transverse spectrum in HIRFL-CSR was simulated and analyzed under different conditions, including electron cooling, hollow electron beam, solenoid effect, the tune shift caused by power supply ripple and the misalignment between ion and electron beams. The result of the simulation shows that the longitudinal magnetic field of the electron cooling device should be compensated by a “compensation solenoid”, and the power supply ripple must be controlled, otherwise the accumulation would be affected and the beam would be lost.     

HIRFL-CSR主环电子冷却模拟计算

以¹⁶O⁸⁺为例,用电子冷却模拟程序计算了冷却时间随离子能量、初始发射度、初始动量分散、离子流强以及离子电荷态的变化规律,研究了储存环在冷却段的β函数和色散函数对冷却时间的影响.     

上海光源同步辐射空间干涉仪研制

 研制了上海光源同步辐射空间干涉仪,用于储存环束团横向截面尺寸及发射度的精确测量。对干涉仪工艺设计中的光路参数、关键设备选型、数据处理方法及数据采集处理软件结构进行了分析讨论。结合束流实验完成了系统调试及运行参数优化,结果表明,CCD增益系数与曝光时间设置对测量精度有显著影响,增益系数设为0 dB,曝光时间设为200 ms时,随机测量误差可控制在μm量级。对上海光源储存环横向束斑尺寸进行了精确测量,结果表明:空间相干度曲线近似为高斯分布,可以采用单一空间频率的相干度测量值进行快速束斑尺寸计算;水平束斑尺寸实测值为52.4 μm,与理论值预期值53.0 μm相比,差异小于2%;系统测量误差约为5.5%,主要误差来源为相干度随机测量误差。     

Design and first commissioning of a new mode with lower emittance in the SSRF storage ring

A new mode is designed with an emittance of 2.47 nm-rad at 3.0 GeV beam energy, lower than the nominal mode of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) storage ring. Details of the linear optics design and the nonlinear optimization are presented in this paper. During Phase I commissioning of the storage ring we tested the new optics mode and some expected results were obtained. After restoring the linear optics by means of the linear optics with closed orbit technique, the main parameters of the real machine agree well with the designed values and the injection efficiency and beam lifetime are acceptable.     

Beam emittance investigation in high brightness injector using different driver laser profiles

Beam emittance plays an important role in any accelerator, and it is a main parameter to judge the performance of an accelerator. Emittance optimization is an indispensable part in conditioning and operation of the facility. For a laser-driven high brightness injector, different time structure of the laser pulse has different effects on transverse emittance. In order to compare Gaussian and flat-top laser pulse, systematic simulations of 500 pC have been done. From the simulation results, one can see that flat-top pulse laser will yield smaller minimal transverse beam size and transverse beam emittance than Gaussian pulse laser.     

Low emittance, high brilliance relativistic electron beams from a laser-plasma accelerator

Progress in laser wakefield accelerators indicates their suitability as a driver of compact free-electron lasers (FELs). High brightness is defined by the normalized transverse emittance, which should be less than 1π mm mrad for an x-ray FEL. We report high-resolution measurements of the emittance of 125 MeV, monoenergetic beams from a wakefield accelerator. An emittance as low as 1.1±0.1π mm mrad is measured using a pepper-pot mask. This sets an upper limit on the emittance, which is comparable with conventional linear accelerators. A peak transverse brightness of 5×101? A m?1 rad?1 makes it suitable for compact XUV FELs.     

光阴极微波电子枪中发射度补偿及模拟计算

介绍了上海深紫外自由电子激光用光阴极微波电子枪采用发射度补偿技术的结果 .详细分析了线性空间电荷力的特点及对束流发射度的影响 ,从束流动力学和相空间两方面讨论了发射度补偿原理 .给出了补偿线圈的设计结构及其轴向场分布 .利用PARMELA程序对补偿效果作了模拟计算 .结果表明 ,设计的腔体对单圈 1 .5nC束团 ,在枪出口后 1 .2m处 ,电子能量为 5 .7MeV ,横向归一化发射度εn ,RMS=1 .61 2πmm·mrad. The emittance compensation technology will be used on the photo cathode RF gun for Shanghai SDUV FEL. In this paper, the space charge force and its effect on electron beam transverse emittance in RF gunis is studied, the principle of emittance compensation in phase space is discussed. We have designed a compensation solenoid and calulated its magnetic field distribution. Its performance has been studied by the code PARMELA. Matching by solenoids in space charge dominated LEBTs

The betatron matching of a rotationally asymmetric beam in space charge dominated low-energy beam transports (LEBTs) where solenoids are used for the transverse matching has been studied.For better understanding, the coupling elements of a beam matrix are interpreted in special forms that are products of a term defined by the Larmor rotation angle and another by the difference between the beam matrix elements in the two transverse planes.The coupling form originally derived from the rotationally symmetric field in solenoids still holds when taking into account the rotationally asymmetric space charge forces that are due to the unequal emittance in the two transverse planes.It is shown in this paper that when an LEBT mainly comprising solenoids transports a beam having unequal emittance in the two transverse planes and the linear space charge force is taken into account, the initial Twiss parameters can be modified to obtain the minimum and equal emittance at the LEBT exit.The TRACE3D calculations also prove the principle.However, when quadrupoles that are also rotationally asymmetric are involved in between solenoids, the coupling between the two transverse planes becomes more complicated and the emittance increase is usually unavoidable.A matching example using the CSNS (China Spallation Neutron Source) LEBT conditions is also presented.     

KB镜束流截面测量系统研制

为了对衍射极限储存环的束流横向截面尺寸及发射度进行测量,设计了一套Kirkpatrick-Baez(KB)反射镜聚焦成像系统,并在上海光源(SSRF)储存环进行预制研究。该系统主体由两面垂直放置的KB反射镜组成,分别在水平及垂直方向对弯转磁铁光源点进行成像,系统工作在硬X射线波段,聚焦光斑被闪烁体X射线相机采集。对影响系统成像质量的像差和点扩散函数进行了计算。目前,实现了对束流的实时成像,可精确测量束流横向截面尺寸为75.9 μm(水平方向)和20.2 μm(垂直方向),系统稳定性(RMS)小于0.1 μm。
