A new structure is proposed for localizing electromagnetic waves and energies with a left-handed-medium (LHM) slab and a perfectly electrically conducting (PEC) plane. When a current source is placed in front of a perfectly matched LHM slab with negative permittivity -epsilon0 and negative permeability -mu0 and a PEC plane is placed at the image point, we show rigorously that all the electromagnetic waves are confined in a region between the source and the PEC plane, and the fields outside the region are completely zero. Such an energy-localization system would be useful in medical treatments that use concentrated optical and microwave energies. However, a perfectly matched LHM is unphysical and does not exist in nature. Hence we further study the loss and retardation effects of LHM on the energy localization. Numerical results are presented for the lossy LHM structure to demonstrate the energy localization.  相似文献

The investigation of TM wave propagation inside a cylindrical waveguide composed of antiferromagnetic/nonmagnetic superlattices (LANS), bounded by left-handed material (LHM), is presented. We have derived the eigenmode equation and obtained the solutions for TM propagation modes. We found that the waveguide supports backward TM waves since both electric permittivity and magnetic permeability of the LHM are negative. We also illustrated the dependence of the wave index n x on the magnetic fraction f 1 and the reduced radius of the LANS. The largest propagation lengths of TM waves and the best confinement are achieved for the thinnest LANS of less magnetic material. Moreover, we displayed the influence of the magnetic permeability μ h and the electric permittivity ε h of the LHM on the power flow of TM waves. Larger wave indices have been switched by increasing μ h and ε h .  相似文献

The generating mechanism of the energy-stream loops (ESLs) for the evanescent waves around the interfaces of a left-handed material (LHM) slab has been investigated with a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The simulations have shown that these ESLs originate from standing waves, attributed to the intervention of counter-propagating evanescent waves. Large numbers of ESLs can appear because of the numerous values of wave vectors ky. The larger ESLs die out more quickly than the smaller ones in time after the source is switched off, the ESLs shrink continuously with increasing delay, and the oscillated distributions of the evanescent waves between the surfaces can also be validated. It is greatly helpful for the further comprehension on energy fluxes of evanescent waves in the LHM slab.  相似文献

We study guided modes propagating along a dielectric slab waveguide with a left handed material (LHM) cover or substrate. The dispersion relation is derived by using normalized waveguide parameters. An analytical method is then proposed to calculate the universal dispersion curves. Different from a slab waveguide with a LHM core, we find that guidance properties are strongly dependent on dielectric permittivity ε and magnetic permeability μ of the substrate and cover layers. For oscillating guided modes, fundamental zero order mode is not always absence, sometimes it exists in a restricted range of normalized propagation constant. First order mode behaves as other higher order modes and exists up to infinite high frequency. Higher order modes have no double degeneracy in the case of LHM cover layer. For surface guided modes, the existence and the type of the mode solutions with respect to different parameters are classified systematically and discussed in detail. Unlike a slab waveguide with a LHM core where the dispersion curve of TE1 surface mode continues with that of oscillating TE1 mode, the dispersion curve of TE1 surface mode continues with that of oscillating TE0 mode. It seems that the two different kinds of modes compensate each other to form one whole mode. Both TE and TM guided modes are discussed.  相似文献

 分析了非线性左手材料模型,推导了非线性左手材料中的时域有限差分法及完美匹配层的计算式。数值模拟了具有Kerr非线性效应的左手材料平板中的电磁波。观察到该材料同样具有电磁聚焦特性。对比线性左手材料,其聚焦点的幅度和位置都会发生偏移。同时改变波源的强度及其到平板边界距离,讨论了不同距离情况下该非线性左手材料平板对电磁波分布的影响。当波源距离材料平板足够远,通过非线性左手材料聚焦的电场强度几乎集中在其外表面。  相似文献

The theory of step-index waveguides is well-established. Most practical slab waveguide structures have a graded-index profile. The basic properties of graded-index planar waveguide structures are similar to those of step-index waveguides with subtle differences. The most common types of graded-index slab waveguides are linearly and exponentially graded-index profiles. We here treat linearly graded-index slab waveguide. In this work, a three-layer waveguide structure with linearly graded-index film is considered. We assume three structures: the first structure comprises a left-handed material (LHM) cladding, the second structure contains a LHM substrate layer and the third has a LHM cladding and substrate. Closed-form expressions for electric and magnetic fields and the characteristic equation are derived. The three normalized parameters: the asymmetry coefficient (a), the normalized film thickness (V) and the normalized guide index (b) are used to study the dispersion properties of the proposed slab waveguide structure.  相似文献

A formal proof to relate the concept of electromagnetic local density of states (LDOS) to the electric and magnetic dyadic Green's functions (DGF) is provided. The expression for LDOS is obtained by relating the electromagnetic energy density at any location in a medium at uniform temperature T to the electric and magnetic DGFs. The appropriate boundary conditions governing the DGFs are obtained and it is seen that the two types of DGFs are electromagnetic duals of each other. With this the concept of LDOS is also extended to material media. The LDOS is split into two terms—one that originates from the energy density in an infinite, homogeneous medium and the other that takes into account scattering from inhomogeneities. The second part can always be defined unambiguously, even in lossy materials. For lossy materials, the first part is finite only if spatial dispersion is taken into account.  相似文献

We report an alternative method of designing a new metamaterial with left handed (LH) characteristics over multi-band (MB) frequencies at microwave frequency regime. The resultant LH metamaterial (LHM) consisting of a single-sided tree-shaped fractal structure features triple magnetic resonances and one electric resonance apart from the lower metal plasma response, which is responsible for the three bands of negative refraction. The multi-resonant mechanism has been systematically studied to account for all electromagnetic behaviors, and capacitor–inductor circuit models are put forward for quantitative analysis. The LHM is balanced in the fundamental passband when only one layer is utilized, whereas the balanced condition is slightly broken when a collection of sub-wavelength cells are cascaded. The negative-zero-positive refraction of the fundamental LH band and the negative refraction of the higher LH band have been numerically validated by a prism-like LHM. For demonstration, a three-layer LHM slab sample is fabricated and measured. Consistent numerical and experimental results are observed. The method not requiring individual resonant particles and electrically continuous wires paves the way for a new route to compact MB LHM design.  相似文献

In this paper the propagation of elegant Hermite-cosh-Gaussian, elegant Laguerre Gaussian, and Bessel Gaussian beams through a Kerr left-handed metamaterial(LHM) slab have been studied. A split-step Fourier method is used to investigate the propagation of laser beams through this media. Numerical simulation shows that Gaussian beams have different focusing behaviors in a Kerr LHM slab with positive or negative nonlinearity. Beam focusing happens in slabs with positive nonlinearity and not in slabs with negative nonlinearity; however, negative nonlinearity is required for a Kerr LHM slab to act like a lens. Additionally, the focusing properties of beams can be controlled by controlling the thickness of the slab or the input power of the incident beam. A multilayer structure is also proposed to have beam focusing by thinner slabs and passing longer distances.  相似文献

This study presents the electromagnetic wave propagation through the frequency-dispersive and lossy double-negative slab embedded between two different semi-infinite media. The double-negative slab is realized by using two models, the Lorentz and Drude medium models. The properties and the required equations for the frequency-dispersive and lossy double-negative slab, the Lorentz medium and Drude medium are given in detail. After the construction of the problem, the reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for both TE and TM waves. Then, the reflected, transmitted and loss powers are determined using these coefficients. Finally, in the numerical results, the mentioned powers for TE and TM waves are computed and illustrated as a function of the incidence angle, the frequency and the slab thickness when the damping frequency changes.  相似文献

Lenses made of negative index materials have the ability to focus the propagating and evanescent components of electromagnetic waves. Such a possibility enables super resolution, in turn resulting in sharper, subwavelength size images. In this present work, we present subwavelength imaging that was obtained from a one-dimensional left-handed metamaterial (LHM) composed of alternating layers of split-ring resonators and thin wires. We investigated the effect of the thickness of LHM lenses on image size. The left-handed pass band within the negative permittivity and permeability region is shown experimentally and theoretically for different thicknesses of LHM slabs. We also studied the transmission-phase of LHMs with a different number of unit cells along the propagation direction. The phase decreases with the increasing thicknesses of LHM slabs, proving that the phase velocity is negative in the left-handed transmission band. PACS 42.25.-p; 41.20.Jb; 81.05.-t  相似文献

We apply a simple ABCD matrix formalism to investigate beam propagation in left-handed material (LHM) slab systems. Firstly, we derive the expressions for the matrix elements for a single LHM slab. Based on the ABCD matrix, we obtain the field distributions both inside and outside the LHM slab, and the conditions for focusing and phase compensation of the Gaussian beam. Secondly, the derived ABCD law is applied to analyze the propagation properties of Gaussian beams through various cascaded LHM slab systems. The corresponding focusing and phase compensation conditions of the Gaussian beam are also obtained. Our theoretic formalism may be applied as a compact and effective tool for the research of light beam propagation in complex LHM slab systems, since it avoids the complicated integral operation.  相似文献

从电磁场理论出发对负折射材料填充的3层平板波导的传播特性进行研究,并进行了数值计算,分析TE和TM波在平板中传播的性质,得到了电磁波的模式方程,与电磁波在右手材料填充的平板波导中的传播特性做了对比,考察了TE模式的能流密度,进行了归一化计算。结果分析表明:基模、一阶模不存在,且任何模式都存在一个截止厚度,随着厚度的增大,模式数量也增多;在一定的入射频率下,平板薄膜厚度趋向一定数值时,可以同时传播多种模式的波,并且入射波频率越高,波导同时存在多种模式的可能性越大;与右手材料相比,左手材料填充相同尺寸的3层平板波导可以传播更高能量的电磁波,导波效果更好。  相似文献

Presently available high-power laser pulses of ponderomotive energy U p ? 2mc 2 should permit the fundamental processes of quantum electrodynamics in such fields, in particular, the formation of electron-positron pairs in impacts of laser pulses with highly charged ions, to be observed. We evaluate the highly nonlinear production rates of this process and investigate the most favorable conditions of pair production, in particular, either along the direction of linear polarization or in the propagation direction of the laser pulse. For femtosecond radiation pulses, it is possible to represent the laser beam by a monochromatic and linearly polarized electromagnetic plane wave. This approximation considerably simplifies the calculations required.  相似文献

The characteristics of surface wave modes in a PEMC backed chiral slab are studied theoretically. First, the analytical solution of electromagnetic fields and dispersion relations are carried out. Then, the fractional field solutions are found using the fractional curl operator. The numerical results are given by assuming that wave numbers k and k± are either real or imaginary. These results are also evaluated at real and imaginary values of fractional parameter describing the order of curl operator. The discussion contains fractional dispersion curves at various cut-off frequencies and the fractional surface waves in chiral-PEMC and achiral-PMC slabs respectively. For numerical analysis it is assumed that the fractional order of the curl operator is related to chiral admittance, thickness of the slab, and PEMC admittance. For the values of the fractional order equal to 0, 1, and 2 geometry corresponds to PMC backed ordinary dielectric slab, PEMC backed chiral slab, and PEC backed chiral slab respectively. Consequently TE, HE (even), and HE (odd) modes are produced in the respective geometries.  相似文献

基于对S型结构的理论分析,将中心频率设置为60 GHz,通过合理的改变单元结构中相应的尺寸以实现所需电谐振和磁谐振频率,并且经过优化以实现负介电常量和负磁导率的重合频段尽可能理想. 运用反演参量提取方法进行电磁参量提取,可以得到本设计在58.1~61.4 GHz频段内其ε和μ同时为负,即左手频段. 分析散射参量的仿真结果,在58~62 GHz频段内S21大于-3 dB,在59.8~60.4 GHz频段内,S11小于-20 dB,因此该设计结果可以运用于60 GHz通信滤波器和天线等器件的研究与设计.  相似文献

The real part of the refractive index n(omega) of a nearly transparent and passive medium is usually taken to have only positive values. Through an analysis of a current source radiating into a 1D "left-handed" material (LHM)-where the permittivity and permeability are simultaneously less than zero-we determine the analytic structure of n(omega), demonstrating frequency regions where the sign of Re[n(omega)] must, in fact, be negative. The regime of negative index, made relevant by a recent demonstration of an effective LHM, leads to unusual electromagnetic wave propagation and merits further exploration.  相似文献

Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to simulate the propagation of electromagnetic wave in left-handed material slab (LHMs) with cold plasma model The effects of optical propagation in the left-handed material compared to convex lens are discussed. The wider the LHMs is, the stronger electric field of focusing image in left-handed material slab is confirmed by the simulation with various slab length. However, the outer image point location would slightly moves to the LHMs side when the length of LHMs is reduced.  相似文献
