包含左手材料的四层平板波导中的光导模 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
研究一个芯子层是左手材料,其他三层由传统材料构成的四层平板光波导系统,利用图解法对各种TE偏振的导波模式的解进行详细分析.研究表明,四层左手材料光波导既能支持振荡导模,也能支持表面导模,与三层左手材料光波导相比较,此四层波导的导波模式呈现一些新的特性.对于中间传统材料层存在振荡场的情形:芯子层支持振荡导模的光波导中存在基模,并且高阶振荡导模出现模式缺失的性质;芯子层支持表面导模的光波导可以支持基模和多个高阶模式,并且存在模式兼并的性质.对于中间传统材料层存在衰减场的情形,此四层波导结构可等效为三层左手材料光波导.这些新的光波导传输性质对各种光波导器件的制作有潜在的应用价值. 相似文献

A new dielectric slab waveguide with a left-handed material (LHM) cover and substrate is proposed. The dispersion relations
and normalized effective thickness of the asymmetric LHM slab waveguide are investigated, in view of the normalized parameters.
A number of unusual properties are found, for example, the fundamental and first-order modes do not exist and higher-order
modes have double degeneracy. The propagation modes are absent at the low normalized frequency, and the cutoff frequencies
of some LHM slab waveguide modes decrease with increase in the asymmetry measure. Unlike traditional slab waveguides, the
V –H curves of the LHM slab waveguides are in one-to-one correspondence. Both TE and TM modes are discussed; in addition, the
dispersion relations and normalized effective thicknesses of the TM modes are discussed in detail, when the difference in
refractive indices of the film and the substrate is small. The results show that the region of mode coexistence taking place
near the cutoff frequency becomes narrower with increase in the difference in refractive indices of the film and the substrate.
The influence of this difference on the normalized effective thickness curves is different, and becomes smaller and smaller
with increase in the value of the asymmetry measure, if different values of the refractive indices are employed. 相似文献

The structural dispersion characteristics of guided surface modes in a hollow slab waveguide with a left-handed material substrate or cover are investigated. Dispersion relation is derived by using normalized parameters, and universal dispersion curves have been obtained analytically, by solving transcendental dispersion equations in a reverse way. We investigate guided modes in the asymmetric waveguide structure with a left-handed material (LHM) layer surrounded by air and metal. A graphical method is proposed to determine the guided modes. New properties of the oscillating and surface guided modes, such as absence of the fundamental mode, coexistence of the oscillating and surface guided modes, fast attenuation of the surface guided modes, and mode degeneracy, are analyzed in detail. We also investigate dispersive characteristics of the metal-LHM- air optical waveguide. The propagation constant increases with decreasing slab thickness for the first-order oscillating mode, which is different from that in traditional metal-cladding waveguides. 相似文献

The conversion of guided modes (TE0 and TE1) at a rectangular step on a dielectric slab waveguide is investigated with mm microwaves. The power of the modes is measured
from their interference patterns in the evanescent field outside the waveguide slab. The relative power of two modes changes
periodically when the length of the step is varied. In the experiments a change of up to three orders of magnitude was measured.
The step is considered as a sequence of three waveguide sections of different thickness. At the discontinuities the modal

The theory of step-index waveguides is well-established. Most practical slab waveguide structures have a graded-index profile. The basic properties of graded-index planar waveguide structures are similar to those of step-index waveguides with subtle differences. The most common types of graded-index slab waveguides are linearly and exponentially graded-index profiles. We here treat linearly graded-index slab waveguide. In this work, a three-layer waveguide structure with linearly graded-index film is considered. We assume three structures: the first structure comprises a left-handed material (LHM) cladding, the second structure contains a LHM substrate layer and the third has a LHM cladding and substrate. Closed-form expressions for electric and magnetic fields and the characteristic equation are derived. The three normalized parameters: the asymmetry coefficient (a), the normalized film thickness (V) and the normalized guide index (b) are used to study the dispersion properties of the proposed slab waveguide structure. 相似文献

If the metal cladding of a dielectric optical waveguide is sufficiently thin to be only partially reflecting, then the waveguide modes differ from those of the conventional metal-clad waveguide. The TE modes are little affected by a variation in the metal thickness but the TM modes change considerably due to a coupling between the waveguide modes and the surface plasma waves supported by both the metal: dielectric interfaces and the metal film. It is the refractive index of the dielectric cladding which is remote from the guiding core that determines whether the lowest order TM mode is the TM0 or TM1 mode. This dielectric cladding also strongly influences the attenuation of the TM modes and, if the guide supports a TM0 mode, then the attenuation of the TM modes far from cut-off are an order of magnitude higher than that of the corresponding modes when the guide cannot support a TM0 mode. If the guide can support a TM0 mode then its dimensions can be chosen such that it will support the TEN and TMN modes with equal phase velocities. A lossless approximation is used to develop an expression which will specify the required guide dimensions directly and parametric plots of these dimensions are discussed. 相似文献

A theory of the radiation from the open end of a circular waveguide fed in the dominant TE11 mode and flush-mounted to an infinite, perfectly conducting flat ground plane covered by a plasma or a dielectric sheath is developed. In this analysis, the contributions to the aperture admittance and the excited fields from the higher order TE1n (n ≥ 1) and TM1l(l ≥ 1) modes are included. The aperture admittance for which the higher order modes are considered, has been calculated by two methods: 1. variational technique and 2. successive iteration method. It is shown that for any desired order of accuracy the results of these approaches are identical. Expressions for radiated fields, surface waves for all radial values of r, and the fields which represent glancing incident fields inside the slab are derived. The contribution of the surface waves to the aperture admittance is also presented. 相似文献

Based on classical electromagnetic theory, characteristics of guided modes in a rectangular waveguide filled with a pair of single-negative layers are studied. The results show that only surface waves of TE mode can propagate in this peculiar waveguide, no TM mode in any forms can propagate in it. In addition, TE waveguide modes will be affected by permeability ratio μ1/μ2 and dielectric layer thickness ratio P. Finally, from the electric field distribution of TE mode, we find the amplitude and location of the electric field can be adjusted by changing the thickness ratio P. 相似文献

The dispersion characteristics of a circular dielectric rod waveguide with period corrugations are analyzed with the mode matching method. After obtaining the rigorous dispersion equation, the dispersion curve for TE01 mode exciting is calculated by the improved Newton's method. The variations of the normalized center frequency and width as well as the maximum attenuation constant of the stopband with the geometry parameters of the periodic corrugation structure are given respectively. The convergence properties of numerical solutions are also discussed. Based on the analysis, some useful guidelines for the design of the band-rejection filters consisting of the periodic structure are thereby suggested. 相似文献

A three-layer slab waveguide with air core layer and anisotropic left-handed material claddings is investigated for sensing applications. Different from the waveguide mode sensors and surface plasmon resonance sensors in which the analyte is placed in the evanescent field region, the proposed sensor contains the sample in the core region that supports the oscillating field. Due to the strong concentration of the electromagnetic field in the analyte medium, the proposed device exhibits unusual sensitivity enhancement. The simulations revealed that the sensitivity improvement of TE3 mode compared to conventional evanescent wave sensor is approximately a factor of 20. 相似文献

利用图解法系统地研究了由不同类型的单负材料作为包层的三层平板波导的模式特征.研究表明单负介质波导具有一系列奇异的特性,与传统介质波导或左手介质波导相比,此波导的芯区横向振荡导模的模折射率范围较大.除0阶导模外,其它TE,TM导模均为芯区横向振荡模,且同阶的TE、TM模的色散曲线几乎重合,只有0阶的TE,TM模才可以支持表面波的传播.单负介质的结构参数对0阶导模的影响较大.一定条件下,波导中可以出现0阶导模的完伞缺失或仅支持表面波的传输,还会出现超慢波现象,甚至可以共生都是后向波的0阶双模. 相似文献

Radiation phenomena observed in a wedge shape ended dielectric slab waveguide are analyzed using mode matching technique. The case of transverse electric polarization (TE) being parallel to dielectric slab waveguide is assumed. In order to describe the fields in the wedge region, a stack of dielectric plates is assumed and in each layer the fields are expanded in terms of the mixed spectrum of guided and radiated modes. A similar expansion is used in the constant thickness slab waveguide while in free space medium a continuous-radiation mode expansion is used. Then a mode matching approach is applied, incorporating the orthogonality properties of mixed spectrum modes, in order to compute the wave fields inside the dielectric slab waveguide and wedge medium. Mode matching is achieved by discretizing the continuous radiation mode spectrum leading into a numerically stable solution provided a sufficient large number of points are used to convert integrals into finite summations.
