Problems in signal detection and image recovery can sometimes be formulated as a convex feasibility problem (CFP) of finding a vector in the intersection of a finite family of closed convex sets. Algorithms for this purpose typically employ orthogonal or generalized projections onto the individual convex sets. The simultaneous multiprojection algorithm of Censor and Elfving for solving the CFP, in which different generalized projections may be used at the same time, has been shown to converge for the case of nonempty intersection; still open is the question of its convergence when the intersection of the closed convex sets is empty.Motivated by the geometric alternating minimization approach of Csiszár and Tusnády and the product space formulation of Pierra, we derive a new simultaneous multiprojection algorithm that employs generalized projections of Bregman to solve the convex feasibility problem or, in the inconsistent case, to minimize a proximity function that measures the average distance from a point to all convex sets. We assume that the Bregman distances involved are jointly convex, so that the proximity function itself is convex. When the intersection of the convex sets is empty, but the closure of the proximity function has a unique global minimizer, the sequence of iterates converges to this unique minimizer. Special cases of this algorithm include the Expectation Maximization Maximum Likelihood (EMML) method in emission tomography and a new convergence result for an algorithm that solves the split feasibility problem.  相似文献

The method of projections onto convex sets to find a point in the intersection of a finite number of closed convex sets in a Euclidean space, may lead to slow convergence of the constructed sequence when that sequence enters some narrow “corridor” between two or more convex sets. A way to leave such corridor consists in taking a big step at different moments during the iteration, because in that way the monotoneous behaviour that is responsible for the slow convergence may be interrupted. In this paper we present a technique that may introduce interruption of the monotony for a sequential algorithm, but that at the same time guarantees convergence of the constructed sequence to a point in the intersection of the sets. We compare experimentally the behaviour concerning the speed of convergence of the new algorithm with that of an existing monotoneous algorithm.  相似文献

The problem of finding a point in the intersection of a finite family of convex sets in the Euclidean space R″ is considered here. We present a general algorithmic scheme which employs projections onto separating hyperplanes instead of projections onto the convex sets. This scheme includes the method of successive projections of Gubin et al., USSR Comp. Math. and Math. Phys. 7 (1967), 1–24, as a special case. A different realization proposed here is capable of handling the problem when the sets are solid and an interior point of each set is available. This alternative algorithm may, in certain cases, be more attractive than the method of Gubin et al.  相似文献

We present a modification of Dykstra's algorithm which allows us to avoid projections onto general convex sets. Instead, we calculate projections onto either a half-space or onto the intersection of two half-spaces. Convergence of the algorithm is established and special choices of the half-spaces are proposed.The option to project onto half-spaces instead of general convex sets makes the algorithm more practical. The fact that the half-spaces are quite general enables us to apply the algorithm in a variety of cases and to generalize a number of known projection algorithms.The problem of projecting a point onto the intersection of closed convex sets receives considerable attention in many areas of mathematics and physics as well as in other fields of science and engineering such as image reconstruction from projections.In this work we propose a new class of algorithms which allow projection onto certain super half-spaces, i.e., half-spaces which contain the convex sets. Each one of the algorithms that we present gives the user freedom to choose the specific super half-space from a family of such half-spaces. Since projecting a point onto a half-space is an easy task to perform, the new algorithms may be more useful in practical situations in which the construction of the super half-spaces themselves is not too difficult.  相似文献

The cyclic projections algorithm is an important method for determining a point in the intersection of a finite number of closed convex sets in a Hilbert space. That is, for determining a solution to the “convex feasibility” problem. This is the third paper in a series on a study of the rate of convergence for the cyclic projections algorithm. In the first of these papers, we showed that the rate could be described in terms of the “angles” between the convex sets involved. In the second, we showed that these angles often had a more tractable formulation in terms of the “norm” of the product of the (nonlinear) metric projections onto related convex sets.In this paper, we show that the rate of convergence of the cyclic projections algorithm is also intimately related to the “linear regularity property” of Bauschke and Borwein, the “normal property” of Jameson (as well as Bakan, Deutsch, and Li’s generalization of Jameson’s normal property), the “strong conical hull intersection property” of Deutsch, Li, and Ward, and the rate of convergence of iterated parallel projections. Such properties have already been shown to be important in various other contexts as well.  相似文献

Many problems in applied mathematics can be abstracted into finding a common point of a finite collection of sets. If all the sets are closed and convex in a Hilbert space, the method of successive projections (MOSP) has been shown to converge to a solution point, i.e., a point in the intersection of the sets. These assumptions are however not suitable for a broad class of problems. In this paper, we generalize the MOSP to collections of approximately compact sets in metric spaces. We first define a sequence of successive projections (SOSP) in such a context and then proceed to establish conditions for the convergence of a SOSP to a solution point. Finally, we demonstrate an application of the method to digital signal restoration.  相似文献

The projected subgradient method for constrained minimization repeatedly interlaces subgradient steps for the objective function with projections onto the feasible region, which is the intersection of closed and convex constraints sets, to regain feasibility. The latter poses a computational difficulty, and, therefore, the projected subgradient method is applicable only when the feasible region is “simple to project onto.” In contrast to this, in the superiorization methodology a feasibility-seeking algorithm leads the overall process, and objective function steps are interlaced into it. This makes a difference because the feasibility-seeking algorithm employs projections onto the individual constraints sets and not onto the entire feasible region. We present the two approaches side-by-side and demonstrate their performance on a problem of computerized tomography image reconstruction, posed as a constrained minimization problem aiming at finding a constraint-compatible solution that has a reduced value of the total variation of the reconstructed image.  相似文献

The classical problem of finding a point in the intersection of countably many closed and convex sets in a Hilbert space is considered. Extrapolated iterations of convex combinations of approximate projections onto subfamilies of sets are investigated to solve this problem. General hypotheses are made on the regularity of the sets and various strategies are considered to control the order in which the sets are selected. Weak and strong convergence results are established within thisbroad framework, which provides a unified view of projection methods for solving hilbertian convex feasibility problems. Convex feasibility problems require to find a point in the intersection of a finite family of convex sets. We propose to solve such problems by performing set-enlargements and applying a new kind of projection operators called valiant projectors. A valiant projector onto a convex set implements a special relaxation strategy, proposed by Goffin in 1971, that dictates the move toward the projection according to the distance from the set. Contrary to past realizations of this strategy, our valiant projection operator implements the strategy in a continuous fashion. We study properties of valiant projectors and prove convergence of our new valiant projections method. These results include as a special case and extend the 1985 automatic relaxation method of Censor.  相似文献

The problem of designing a controller for a linear, discretetime system is formulated as a problem of designing an appropriate plant-state covariance matrix. Closed-loop stability and multiple-output performance constraints are expressed geometrically as requirements that the covariance matrix lies in the intersection of some specified closed, convex sets in the space of symmetric matrices. We solve a covariance feasibility problem to determine the existence and compute a covariance matrix to satisty assignability and output-norm performance constraints. In addition, we can treat a covariance optimization problem to construct an assignable covariance matrix which satisfies output performance constraints and is as close as possible to a given desired covariance. We can also treat inconsistent constraints, where we look for an assignable covariance which best approximates desired but unachievable output performance objectives; we call this the infeasible covariance optimization problem. All these problems are of a convex nature, and alternating convex projection methods are proposed to solve them, exploiting the geometric formulation of the problem. To this end, analytical expressions for the projections onto the covariance assignability and the output covariance inequality constraint sets are derived. Finally, the problem of designing low-order dynamic controllers using alternating projections is discussed, and a numerical technique using alternating projections is suggested for a solution, although convergence of the algorithm is not guaranteed in this case. A control design example for a fighter aircraft model illustrates the method.This research was completed while the first author was with the Space Systems Control Laboratory at Purdue University. We present a method for finding common points of finitely many closed convex sets in Euclidean space. The Bregman extension of the classical method of cyclic orthogonal projections employs nonorthogonal projections induced by a convex Bregman function, whereas the Bauschke and Borwein method uses Bregman/Legendre functions. Our method works with generalized Bregman functions (B-functions) and inexact projections, which are easier to compute than the exact ones employed in other methods. We also discuss subgradient algorithms with Bregman projections.  相似文献

It is of both theoretical and practical interest to find the projection of a point to the intersection of a finite number of closed convex sets by a sequence of projections to the individual sets successively. In this paper we study such a method and analyze its convergence properties. A main feature of the method is its capability to decompose the projection problem into several small ones. The multiple-sets split feasibility problem (MSFP) is to find a point belongs to the intersection of a family of closed convex sets in one space, such that its image under a linear transformation belongs to the intersection of another family of closed convex sets in the image space. Many iterative methods can be employed to solve the MSFP. Jinling Zhao et al. proposed a modification for the CQ algorithm and a relaxation scheme for this modification to solve the MSFP. The strong convergence of these algorithms are guaranteed in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Recently López et al. proposed a relaxed CQ algorithm for solving split feasibility problem, this algorithm can be implemented easily since it computes projections onto half-spaces and has no need to know a priori the norm of the bounded linear operator. However, this algorithm has only weak convergence in the setting of infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we introduce a new relaxed self-adaptive CQ algorithm for solving the MSFP where closed convex sets are level sets of some convex functions such that the strong convergence is guaranteed in the framework of infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Our result extends and improves the corresponding results.  相似文献

We establish sufficient conditions for finite convergence of the alternating projections method for two non-intersecting and potentially nonconvex sets. Our results are based on a generalization of the concept of intrinsic transversality, which until now has been restricted to sets with nonempty intersection. In the special case of a polyhedron and closed half space, our sufficient conditions define the minimum distance between the two sets that is required for alternating projections to converge in a single iteration.  相似文献

We prove several Helly-type theorems for infinite families of geodesically convex sets in infinite graphs. That is, we determine the least cardinal n such that any family of (particular) convex sets in some infinite graph has a nonempty intersection whenever each of its subfamilies of cardinality less than n has a nonempty intersection. We obtain some general compactness theorems, and some particular results for pseudo-modular graphs, strongly dismantlable graphs and ball-Helly graphs.  相似文献

Strong restricted-orientation convexity is a generalization of standard convexity. We explore the properties of strongly convex sets in multidimensional Euclidean space and identify major properties of standard convex sets that also hold for strong convexity. We characterize strongly convex flats and halfspaces, and establish the strong convexity of the affine hull of a strongly convex set. We then show that, for every point in the boundary of a strongly convex set, there is a supporting strongly convex hyperplane through it. Finally, we show that a closed set with nonempty interior is strongly convex if and only if it is the intersection of strongly convex halfspaces; we state a condition under which this result extends to sets with empty interior.  相似文献

The method of alternating projections (MAP) is a common method for solving feasibility problems. While employed traditionally to subspaces or to convex sets, little was known about the behavior of the MAP in the nonconvex case until 2009, when Lewis, Luke, and Malick derived local linear convergence results provided that a condition involving normal cones holds and at least one of the sets is superregular (a property less restrictive than convexity). However, their results failed to capture very simple classical convex instances such as two lines in a three-dimensional space. In this paper, we extend and develop the Lewis-Luke-Malick framework so that not only any two linear subspaces but also any two closed convex sets whose relative interiors meet are covered. We also allow for sets that are more structured such as unions of convex sets. The key tool required is the restricted normal cone, which is a generalization of the classical Mordukhovich normal cone. Numerous examples are provided to illustrate the theory.  相似文献

We study a steered sequential gradient algorithm which minimizes the sum of convex functions by proceeding cyclically in the directions of the negative gradients of the functions and using steered step-sizes. This algorithm is applied to the convex feasibility problem by minimizing a proximity function which measures the sum of the Bregman distances to the members of the family of convex sets. The resulting algorithm is a new steered sequential Bregman projection method which generates sequences that converge if they are bounded, regardless of whether the convex feasibility problem is or is not consistent. For orthogonal projections and affine sets the boundedness condition is always fulfilled.  相似文献

The problem of minimizing a continuously differentiable convex function over an intersection of closed convex sets is ubiquitous in applied mathematics. It is particularly interesting when it is easy to project onto each separate set, but nontrivial to project onto their intersection. Algorithms based on Newton’s method such as the interior point method are viable for small to medium-scale problems. However, modern applications in statistics, engineering, and machine learning are posing problems with potentially tens of thousands of parameters or more. We revisit this convex programming problem and propose an algorithm that scales well with dimensionality. Our proposal is an instance of a sequential unconstrained minimization technique and revolves around three ideas: the majorization-minimization principle, the classical penalty method for constrained optimization, and quasi-Newton acceleration of fixed-point algorithms. The performance of our distance majorization algorithms is illustrated in several applications.  相似文献
