Infinite Groups with an Anticentral Element

An element of a group is called anticentral if the conjugacy class of that element is equal to the coset of the commutator subgroup containing that element. A group is called Camina group if every element outside the commutator subgroup is anticentral. In this paper, we investigate the structure of locally finite groups with an anticentral element. Moreover, we construct some non-periodic examples of Camina groups, which are not locally solvable.     

Recognition of Finite Simple Groups S 4(q) by Their Element Orders

It is proved that among simple groups $S_4(q)$ in the class of finite groups, only the groups $S_4(3^n)$, where $n$ is an odd number greater than unity, are recognizable by a set of their element orders. It is also shown that simple groups $U_3(9)$, ${^3D}_4(2)$, $G_2(4)$, $S_6(3)$, $F_4(2)$, and ${^2E}_6(2)$ are recognizable, but $L_3(3)$ is not.     

Groups with Anticentral Elements

We study finite groups G with elements g such that |C _G (g)| = |G:G′|. (Such elements generalize fixed-point-free automorphisms of finite groups.) We show that these groups have a unique conjugacy class of nilpotent supplements for the commutator subgroup and, using the classification of finite simple groups, that these groups are solvable.

Finite Groups in Which Each Irreducible Character has at Most Two Zeros

Let G be a finite group, Irr(G) denotes the set of irreducible complex characters of G and gG the conjugacy class of G containing element g. A well-known theorem of Burnside([1,Theorem 3.15]) states that every nonlinear X ∈ Irr(G) has a zero on G, that is, an element x (or a conjugacy class xG) of G with X(x) = 0. So, if the number of zeros of character table is very small, we may expect, the structure of group is heavily restricted. For example, [2, Proposition 2.7] claimes that G is a Frobenius group with a complement of order 2 if each row in charcter table has at most one zero (its proof uses the classification of simple groups). In this note, we characterize the finite group G satisfying the following hypothesis:

On Infinite Camina Groups

A group G is called a Camina group if G′ ≠ G and each element x ∈ G?G′ satisfies the equation x ^G  = xG′, where x ^G denotes the conjugacy class of x in G. Finite Camina groups were introduced by Alan Camina in 1978, and they had been studied since then by many authors. In this article, we start the study of infinite Camina groups. In particular, we characterize infinite Camina groups with a finite G′ (see Theorem 3.1) and we show that infinite non-abelian finitely generated Camina groups must be nonsolvable (see Theorem 4.3). We also describe locally finite Camina groups, residually finite Camina groups (see Section 3) and some periodic solvable Camina groups (see Section 5).     

On Class Size of p-Singular Elements in Finite Groups

The object of this article is to study the connection between the structure of a finite group and the conjugacy class sizes of the p-singular elements of a finite group. The finite groups G in which every conjugacy class size of the p-singular elements satisfies some given arithmetic conditions are classified.     

Groups with some arithmetic conditions on real class sizes

Let G be a finite group. An x∈G is a real element if x and x ^?1 are conjugate in G. For x∈G, the conjugacy class x ^G is said to be a real conjugacy class if every element of x ^G is real. We show that if 4 divides no real conjugacy class sizes of a finite group G, then G is solvable. We also study the structure of such groups in detail. This generalizes several results in the literature.

Recognizing the Automorphism Groups of Mathieu Groups

It is a well-known fact that characters of a finite group can give important information about the structure of the group. It was also proved by the third author that a finite simple group can be uniquely determined by its character table. Here the authors attempt to investigate how to characterize a finite almost-simple group by using less information of its character table, and successfully characterize the automorphism groups of Mathieu groups by their orders and at most two irreducible character degrees of their character tables.     

Second Maximum Sum of Element Orders of Finite Nilpotent Groups

In [1 Amiri , H. , Jafarian Amiri , S. M. , Isaacs , I. M. ( 2009 ). Sums of element orders in finite groups . Communications in Algebra 37 : 2978 – 2980 .[Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]], the authors proved that the maximum sum of element orders on finite groups of the same order occurs in cyclic group. In this paper we obtain the structure of groups having maximum sum of element orders on noncyclic nilpotent group of the same order.     

On Groups with the Second Largest Value of the Sum of Element Orders

For a finite group G, let ψ(G) denote the sum of element orders of G. It is known that the maximum value of ψ on the set of groups of order n, where n is a positive integer, will occur at the cyclic group ? _n . In this paper, we investigate groups with the second largest value of ψ on the set of groups of the same order.     

Automorphisms of Hyperbolic Groups and Graphs of Groups

Using the canonical JSJ splitting, we describe the outer automorphism group Out(G) of a one-ended word hyperbolic group G. In particular, we discuss to what extent Out(G) is virtually a direct product of mapping class groups and a free abelian group, and we determine for which groups Out(G) is infinite. We also show that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of torsion elements in Out(G), for G any torsion-free hyperbolic group. More generally, let Γ be a finite graph of groups decomposition of an arbitrary group G such that edge groups G_e are rigid (i.e. Out(G_e) is finite). We describe the group of automorphisms of G preserving Γ, by comparing it to direct products of suitably defined mapping class groups of vertex groups.     

On Reflection Subgroups of Finite Coxeter Groups

Let W be a finite Coxeter group. We classify the reflection subgroups of W up to conjugacy and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the map that assigns to a reflection subgroup R of W the conjugacy class of its Coxeter elements to be injective, up to conjugacy.     

Groups Saturated by a Finite Set of Groups

We study the periodic groups that are saturated by a finite set of finite (nonabelian simple) groups, obtaining some information about the elements of the saturating set.
