In this study, the effects of crystallization conditions (cooling rate and end temperature of cooling) on crystallization behavior and polymorphic composition of isotactic polypropylene/multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (iPP/MWCNTs) composites nucleated with different concentrations of β‐nucleating agent (tradename TMB‐5) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The results of DSC, WAXD and SEM revealed that the addition of MWCNTs and TMB‐5 evidently elevates crystallization temperatures and significantly decreases the crystal sizes of iPP. Because of the competition between α‐nucleation (provided by MWCNTs) and β‐nucleation (induced by TMB‐5), the β‐phase crystallization takes place only when 0.15 wt% and higher concentration of TMB‐5 is added. Non‐isothermal crystallization kinetics study showed that the crystallization activation energy ΔE of β‐nucleated iPP/MWCNTs composites is obviously higher than that of pure iPP, which slightly increases with the increase of TMB‐5 concentration, accompanying with the transition of its polymorphic crystallization behavior. The results of non‐isothermal crystallization and melting behavior suggested that the cooling rate and end temperature of cooling (Tend) are important factors in determining the proportion and thermal stability of β‐phase: Lower cooling rate favors the formation of less amount of β‐phase with higher thermal stability, while higher cooling rate encourages the formation of higher proportion of β‐phase with lower thermal stability. The Tend = 100°C can eliminate the β–α recrystallization during the subsequent heating and therefore enhance the thermal stability of the β‐phase. By properly selecting TMB‐5 concentration, cooling rate and Tend, high β‐phase proportion of 88.9% of the sample was obtained. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Sodium 2,2′‐methylene‐bis(4,6‐di‐tert‐butylphenyl) phosphate (NA40) and N,N‐dicyclohexylterephthalamide (NABW) are high effective nucleating agents for inducing the formation of α‐isotactic polypropylene (α‐iPP) and β‐iPP, respectively. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of iPP nucleated with nucleating agents NABW, NA40/NABW (weight ratio of NA40 to NABW is 1:1) and NA40 were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Avrami equation was adopted to analyze the experimental data. The results show that the addition of NABW, NA40/NABW and NA40 can shorten crystallization half‐time (t1/2) and increase crystallization rate of iPP greatly. In these three nucleating agents, the α nucleating agent NA40 can shorten t1/2 of iPP by the largest extent, which indicates that it has the best nucleation effect. While iPP nucleated with NA40/NABW compounding nucleating agents has shorter t1/2 than iPP nucleated with NABW. The Avrami exponents of iPP and nucleated iPP are close to 3.0, which indicates that the addition of nucleating agents doesn't change the crystallization growth patterns of iPP under isothermal conditions and the crystal growth is heterogeneous three‐dimensional spherulitic growth. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐grafted‐lignin (PCL‐g‐lignin) copolymers with 2 to 37 wt % lignin are employed to study the effect of lignin on the morphology, nucleation, and crystallization kinetics of PCL. Lignin displays a nucleating action on PCL chains originating an intersecting lamellar morphology. Lignin is an excellent nucleating agent for PCL at low contents (2–5 wt %) with nucleation efficiency values that are close to or >100%. This nucleating effect increases the crystallization and melting temperature of PCL under nonisothermal conditions and accelerates the overall isothermal crystallization rate of PCL. At lignin contents >18 wt %, antinucleation effects appear, that decrease crystallization and melting temperatures, reduce crystallinity degree, hinder annealing during thermal fractionation and significantly retard isothermal crystallization kinetics. The results can be explained by a competition between nucleating effects and intermolecular interactions caused by hydrogen bonding between PCL and lignin building blocks. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of wood flour (WF) as an efficient nucleating agent on the isothermal melt crystallization and isothermal cold crystallization behavior of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter and polarized optical microscopy. It was found that the incorporation of 4 wt% WF promoted the crystallization of PLA about 4.2%. Polarized optical microscopy results showed the Maltese cross of the samples. The presence of the 4 wt% WF may increase the nucleation density, leading to the increase of the spherulites; however, the size of the spherulites decreased, and the structure became incomplete. The Avrami model was applied to analyze the isothermal crystallization kinetics. It is concluded that the addition of WF modified the crystallization process of PLA (the value of Avrami exponent changed). Various parameters, such as the crystallization half time and crystallization rate constant, reflect that 4 wt% WF significantly improves the crystallization process. The observations in this article indicate that WF is an efficient nucleating agent of PLA. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this work, a novel nucleating agent (NA) based on substituted‐aryl phosphate salts was introduced into poly(L‐Lactide) (PLLA). The nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization behaviors of nucleated PLLA samples were investigated through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscope (POM). Furthermore, the effect of annealing treatment on the cold crystallization behaviors of nucleated samples was also investigated. The results show that the crystallization of PLLA, whether for the melt crystallization (including nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization process) or for the cold crystallization (including the cold crystallization occurring during the DSC heating process and during the annealing process), is greatly dependent upon the content of NA. At relatively lower NA content (≤0.1 wt%), the nucleation effect of NA is inconspicuous, however, at higher NA content (≥0.2 wt%), it exhibits great nucleation effect for the crystallization of PLLA. Further results show that the double endothermic peak of PLLA depends on the temperature applied for the crystallization. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, thymine and melamine were introduced as nucleating agents for poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerates) (PHBVs) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), and their effects were compared with that of boron nitride (BN). Because the overall crystallization rate of PHBVs decreases significantly with the increase in the 3‐hydroxyvalerate comonomer content, the study focused on the crystallization of PHBVs. Isothermal crystallization kinetics of the neat PHBVs and the nucleated PHBVs were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Avrami equation was derived and the parameters were assessed for the nucleation and crystal growth mechanism. The nucleation and crystal growth were examined using polarized optical microscopy. All nucleating agents had similar particle sizes and showed good dispersion in the polymer matrix, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that BN and thymine significantly increased the overall crystallization rate for all PHBVs studied and demonstrated very similar nucleating effects. Melamine reacted with PHBVs and accelerated the thermal degradation, and hence was less effective in nucleating PHBVs. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel nucleating agent (TBC8‐t), self‐assembled with ptert‐butylcalix[8]arene (TBC8) and toluene, was used to manipulate the crystallization behavior of poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA). Toluene molecules were used to adjust the crystallization structure of TBC8. Differential scanning calorimetry results show that the crystallization peak temperature (Tc) and crystallization rate (ΔHc/time) of PLLA nucleated with TBC8‐t are 132.3 °C and 0.24 J/gs, respectively, which are much higher than that with conventional nucleating agent‐talc (Tc = 119.3 °C, ΔHc/time = 0.13 J/gs). The results of polarized optical microscopy demonstrate that TBC8‐t could greatly enhance the crystallization rate of PLLA by increasing the nucleation rate rather than crystal growth rate. Along with an improvement of the crystallization rate, the crystalline morphology of PLLA is also affected by TBC8‐t. The addition of TBC8‐t transforms most of the original spherulite crystals into sheaf‐like crystals. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 1235–1243, 2010  相似文献

Sodium benzoate (SB), a conventional nucleating agent of α‐phase isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was discovered to induce the creation of β‐phase iPP under certain crystalline conditions. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) were carried out to verify the versatile nucleating activity of SB and investigate the influences of SB's content, isothermal crystallization temperature, and crystallization time on the formation of β‐phase iPP. The current experimental results indicated that, under isothermal crystallization conditions, SB showed peculiar nucleating characteristics on inducing iPP crystallization which were different from those of the commercial β form nucleating agent (TMB‐5). The content of β crystal form of iPP nucleated with SB (PP/SB) increased initially with the increase of crystallization temperature, nucleating agent (SB) percentage or crystallization time, reached a maximum value, and then decreased as the crystallization temperature, nucleating agent percentage or crystallization time further increased. While the content of β crystal form of iPP nucleated with TMB‐5 (PP/TMB‐5) showed a completely different changing pattern with the crystallization conditions. The obvious difference of the two kinds of nucleating agents on inducing iPP crystallization can be explained by the versatile nucleating ability of SB. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) exhibiting a well‐defined structure was prepared combining anionic polymerization and mercaptan/ε‐caprolactam living polymerization. To evaluate how this block copolymer affected the crystallization of polylactide (PLA), 0.5 wt % thiol‐terminated PS homopolymer (PSSH), PMMA, and PS‐b‐PMMA was melt‐blended with PLA. The calorimetric characterization of the nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization behavior was analyzed according to Avrami's theory, indicating that PS‐b‐PMMA more effectively increased the crystallization kinetics of the PLA matrix than did PSSH or PMMA. The results revealed that the synergistic effect of the PS and PMMA blocks appeared only when they were simultaneously presented in the PLA matrix. The PS block increased the number of nucleation sites and decreased the spherulite size, whereas the PMMA block facilitated the excellent dispersion of PS‐b‐PMMA in the PLA matrix as shown in polarizing optical microscope experiments. Incorporating PS‐b‐PMMA improved the PLA crystallization rate by promoting heterogeneous nucleation. In addition, incorporating 0.5 wt % PS‐b‐PMMA increased the relative crystallinity of PLA to 43.5%, and decreased the crystallization half‐time to 2.4 min when the blend was isothermal at 105 °C. The PLA crystal structure was unchanged by the presence of PS‐b‐PMMA; however, the crystallization rate was enhanced as probed by SEM and X‐ray diffraction. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The thermal properties, crystallization, and morphology of amphiphilic poly(D ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PDLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) and poly (L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PLLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) copolymers were studied and compared to those of the corresponding poly(lactide) homopolymers. Additionally, stereocomplexation of these copolymers was studied. The crystallization kinetics of the PLA blocks was retarded by the presence of the PDMAEMA block. The studied copolymers were found to be miscible in the melt and the glassy state. The Avrami theory was able to predict the entire crystallization range of the PLA isothermal overall crystallization. The melting points of PLDA/PLLA and PLA/PLA‐b‐PDMAEMA stereocomplexes were higher than those formed by copolymer mixtures. This indicates that the PDMAEMA block is influencing the stability of the stereocomplex structures. For the low molecular weight samples, the stereocomplexes particles exhibited a conventional disk‐shape structure and, for high molecular weight samples, the particles displayed unusual star‐like shape morphology. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influences of α/β compound nucleating agents based on octamethylenedicarboxylic dibenzoylhydrazide on crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) were analyzed. It is found that the crystallization temperatures of nucleated iPP were increased by above 11.0°C and the relative contents of β‐crystals (Kβ ) in iPP reached above 0.40 after addition of compound nucleating agents. The Kβ values depend on cooling rate, crystallization temperature in isothermal crystallization, and the difference between the crystallization temperatures of iPP nucleated by two individual nucleating agents. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics were studied by Caze method and Mo method, respectively. The effective activation energy was calculated by the Friedman's method. The results illustrate that the half crystallization time was shortened and the crystallization rate was increased obviously after addition of nucleating agents, and the effective activation energy was increased with the relative crystallinity.  相似文献

An investigation of the cooperative effects of plasticizer (PEG) and nucleation agent (TMC‐306) on stereocomplex‐type poly(lactide acid) formation and crystallization behaviors between poly(L‐lactide acid) (PLLA) and poly(D‐lactide acid) (PDLA) was conducted. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis indicated that exclusive stereocomplex‐type poly(lactide acid) (sc‐PLA) crystallites without any homocrystallites poly(lactide acid) (hc‐PLA) did form by incorporation of PEG, TMC‐306, or both at a processing temperature higher than the melting temperature of sc‐PLA (around 230°C). The non‐isothermal and isothermal crystallization kinetics showed that PEG and TMC‐306 could independently accelerate the crystallization rate of sc‐PLA. The crystallization peak temperature and crystallization rate of sc‐PLA were significantly improved by the presence of PEG and TMC‐306. The influence of PEG and TMC‐306 on the morphologies of sc‐PLA was also investigated using polarized optical microscopy (POM). Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The nanocompsites of star‐shaped poly(D‐lactide)‐co‐poly(L‐lactide) stereoblock copolymers (s‐PDLA‐PLLA) with two‐dimensional graphene nanosheets (GNSs) were prepared by solution mixing method. Crystallization behaviors were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and wide angle X‐ray diffraction. The results of isothermal crystallization behaviors of the nanocompsites clearly indicated that the GNS could remarkably accelerate the overall crystallization rate of s‐PDLA‐PLLA copolymer. Unique stereocomplex crystallites with melting temperature about 207.0°C formed in isothermal crystallization for all samples. The crystallization temperatures of s‐PDLA‐PLLAs shifted to higher temperatures, and the crystallization peak shapes became sharper with increasing GNS contents. The maximum crystallization temperature of the sample with 3 wt% GNS was about 128.2°C, ie, 15°C higher than pure s‐PDLA‐PLLA. At isothermal crystallization processes, the halftime of crystallization (t0.5) of the sample with 3 wt% GNS decreased to 6.4 minutes from 12.9 minutes of pure s‐PDLA‐PLLA at 160°C.The Avrami exponent n values for the nanocomposites samples were 2.6 to 3.0 indicating the crystallization mechanism with three‐dimensional heterogeneous nucleation and spherulites growth. The morphology and average diameter of spherulites of s‐PDLA‐PLLA with various GNS contents were observed in isothermal crystallization processes by polarized optical microscopy. Spherulite growth rates of samples were evaluated by using combined isothermal and nonisothermal procedures and analyzed by the secondary nucleation theory. The results evidenced that the GNS has acceleration effects on the crystallization of s‐PDLA‐PLLA with good nucleation ability in the s‐PDLA‐PLLA material.  相似文献

The crystallization kinetics of polypropylene (PP) with or without sodium benzoate as a nucleating agent were investigated by means of DSC and polarized optical microscopy in isothermal and nonisothermal modes. A modified Avrami equation was applied to the kinetic analysis of isothermal crystallization. The addition of the nucleating agent up to its saturation concentration increased the crystallization temperature by 15 °C and shortened both the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization half‐times. It was concluded that the sodium benzoate acted as a good nucleating agent for α‐form PP. By adding the nuclefier to PP, adequately controlled spherulites increased the mechanical properties including especially the Izod impact strength and shortened cycle time of PP. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHB‐HHx) and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) blends were prepared using melt blending. The single glass transition temperature, Tg, between the Tgs of the two components and the negative χ value indicated that PHB‐HHx and MPEG formed miscible blends over the range of compositions studied. The Gordon–Taylor equation proved that there was an interaction between PHB‐HHx and MPEG in their blends. FTIR supported the presence of hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group of MPEG and the carbonyl group of PHB‐HHx. The spherulitic morphology and isothermal crystallization behavior of the miscible PHB‐HHx/MPEG blends were investigated at two crystallization temperatures (70 and 40 °C). At 70 °C, melting MPEG acted as a noncrystalline diluent that reduced the crystallization rate of the blends, while insoluble MPEG particles acted as a nucleating agent at 40 °C, enhancing the crystallization rate of the blends. However, no interspherulitic phase separation was observed at the two crystallization temperatures. The constant value of the Avrami exponent demonstrated that MPEG did not affect the three‐dimensional spherulitic growth mechanism of PHB‐HHx crystals in the blends, although the MPEG phase, such as the melting state or insoluble state, influenced the crystallization rate of the blends. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water sorption into polylactide (PLA) and polylactide‐montmorillonite (PLLA‐MONT) composites containing 5 wt % of montmorillonite (MONT) under different heat treatment conditions was studied using the quartz crystal microbalance/heat conduction calorimetry (QCM/HCC) technique. Results showed that water sorption in neat polymer films and composite films increased with heat treatment temperature up to 120 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure the glass‐transition temperature and isothermal crystallization kinetics of all samples. The mobility of the amorphous domain in all samples increased with heat treatment temperature, indicated by the decrease in glass‐transition temperature. PLA composites crystallized at a much faster rate than neat PLA did because MONT acted as a nucleating agent. Under the same heat treatment condition, water sorption in PLLA‐MONT composites was always higher than that in neat PLA due to the presence of the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on the surface of MONT particles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The selectivities of different β‐nucleating agents might be quite different from each other, which is important in determining the crystallization and properties of the obtained β‐isotactic polypropylene (β‐iPP). However, the relationship between molecular structure and dynamic crystallization behavior of β‐iPP nucleated by dual‐selective β‐nucleating agent (DS‐β‐NA) is still not clear. In this study, the dynamic crystallization and melting behavior of two β‐iPP with nearly same average isotacticity but different stereo‐defect distribution, nucleated by a DS‐β‐NA (N,N′‐dicyclohexyl‐2,6‐naphthalenedicarboxamide; trade name TMB‐5), were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electronic microscopy. The results indicated that in the presence of TMB‐5, the dynamic crystallization and melting behavior of the samples are quite different because the joint effects of the dual selectivity of TMB‐5 and stereo‐defect distribution of the iPP under different cooling rates. Two important roles were observed: (i) slow cooling rate favors the formation of high β‐fraction; and (ii) high crystallization temperature favors the crystallization of α‐phase accelerated by TMB‐5. Generally, the dual selectivity of the DS‐β‐NA, the stereo‐defect distribution of iPP, and the cooling rate were important factors in determining the formation of β‐crystal. A layer multiplying coextrusion process was used to produce multilayered polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) films with various nucleating agents. When heated into the melt, the thin PP layers broke up into submicron PP droplets that exhibited fractionated crystallization. If the initial PP layers were 20 nm or less, the resulting droplets exhibited exclusively homogeneous nucleation. If a nucleating agent was added, the systematic departure from homogeneous nucleation provided insight into the nature of the heterogeneous nucleation. In this study, we used thermal analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wide angle X‐Ray scattering (WAXS) to examine the effect of two nucleating agents. We confirmed with WAXS and AFM that a soluble sorbitol nucleating agent for the PP α‐form operates in three concentration regimes as proposed in a previous study. Morphologically, homogeneous nucleation of the submicron droplets produced a granular texture. The correlation length from small‐angle X‐Ray scattering (SAXS) suggested that the grains contained 1–3 mesophase domains. Drawing on classical nucleation theory, the critical size nucleus of an individual mesophase domain was estimated to be about 2 nm3, which was considerably smaller than the mesophase domain. This pointed to mesophase crystallization that included the processes of nucleation and growth. Additional experiments were performed with nucleating agents for the PP β‐form. However, they were not effective in nucleating crystallization of the droplets, presumably because they were essentially insoluble in PP and the nucleating particles were too large to be accommodated in the PP droplets. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A nucleating agent, benzyl‐hydrazide‐derivatized poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and γ‐cyclodextrin inclusion complex (PLA‐IC‐BH), was synthesized through a series of reactions. Poly(lactic acid) and γ‐cyclodextrin inclusion complex (PLA‐IC) was first obtained by ultrasonic co‐precipitation, which was then subjected to carboxylation, acylation, and amidation using benzoyl hydrazine and thionyl chloride. The composition and structure of PLA‐IC‐BH was confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. PLA/PLA‐IC‐BH composites were prepared by melt blending and a hot‐press forming process. Mechanical properties, thermal stabilities, and crystallization behaviors of PLA/PLA‐IC‐BH samples were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), rheological analysis, and so on. Mechanical testing and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the tensile strengths, impact properties, and thermal stabilities of PLA/PLA‐IC‐BH composites were improved significantly compared to pure PLA and PLA/PLA‐IC. DSC results showed that crystallinity of PLA was increased from 5.17% to 38.93% after introduction of PLA‐IC‐BH. POM results showed that PLA‐IC‐BH acted as a nucleating agent for PLA and enhanced its crystallization rate. Rotational rheological behaviors of PLA/PLA‐IC‐BH demonstrated that incorporation of PLA‐IC‐BH increased the rigidity of the network structure of the PLA matrix. Compared to those of PLA, the maximum torque and apparent viscosity of PLA/PLA‐IC‐BH composites were increased by 55.56% and 25.59%, respectively. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate)‐co‐poly(propylene glycol) (PET‐co‐PPG) copolymers with PPG ratio ranging from 0 to 0.90 mol% were synthesized by the melt copolycondensation. The intrinsic viscosity, structure, non‐isothermal crystallization behavior, nucleation and spherulitic growth of the copolymers were investigated by Ubbelohde viscometer, Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H‐NMR), differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy, respectively. The non‐isothermal crystallization process of the copolymers was analyzed by Avrami, Ozawa, Mo's, Kissinger, and Dobreva methods, respectively. The results showed that the crystallizability of PET was apparently enhanced with incorporating a small amount of PPG, which first rose and then reduced with increasing amount of PPG in the copolymers at a given cooling rate. The crystallization mechanism was a three‐dimensional growth with both instantaneous and sporadic nucleation. Particularly, PET‐co‐PPG containing 0.60 mol% PPG exhibited the highest crystallizability among all the copolymers. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
