We present a theoretical study of the O(3P) + CH4 --> OH + CH3 reaction using electronic structure, kinetics, and dynamics calculations. We calculate a grid of ab initio points at the PMP2/AUG-cc-pVDZ level to characterize the potential energy surface in regions of up to 1.3 eV above reagents. This grid of ab initio points is used to derive a set of specific reaction parameters (SRP) for the MSINDO semiempirical Hamiltonian. The resulting SRP-MSINDO Hamiltonian improves the quality of the standard Hamiltonian, particularly in regions of the potential energy surface beyond the minimum-energy reaction path. Quasiclassical-trajectory calculations are used to study the reaction dynamics with the original and the improved MSINDO semiempirical Hamiltonians, and a prior surface. The SRP-MSINDO semiempirical Hamiltonian yields OH rotational distributions in agreement with experimental results, improving over the results of the other surfaces. Thermal rate constants estimated with Variational Transition State Theory using the SRP-MSINDO Hamiltonian are also in agreement with experiments. Our results indicate that reparametrized semiempirical Hamiltonians are a good alternative to generating potential energy surfaces for accurate dynamics studies of polyatomic reactions.

The algebraic Hamiltonian of NO2 is optimized using U(4) algebra via fitting to 102 observed vibrational lines. The RMS error of the fitting is 2.39 cm?1. We calculated highly excited vibrational energy levels using this optimized Hamiltonian, and then obtained the potential energy surface for the electronic ground state by using the classical limit of the U(4) algebraic Hamiltonian. We also calculated the dissociation energies, the force constants etc. Our results are in good agreement with the other theoretical results. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A rovibrational model based on the normal-mode complete nuclear Hamiltonian is applied to methane using our recent potential energy surface [A. V. Nikitin, M. Rey, and Vl. G. Tyuterev, Chem. Phys. Lett. 501, 179 (2011)]. The kinetic energy operator and the potential energy function are expanded in power series to which a new truncation-reduction technique is applied. The vibration-rotation Hamiltonian is transformed systematically to a full symmetrized form using irreducible tensor operators. Each term of the Hamiltonian expansion can be thus cast in the tensor form whatever the order of the development. This allows to take full advantage of the symmetry properties for doubly and triply degenerate vibrations and vibration-rotation states. We apply this model to variational computations of energy levels for (12)CH(4), (13)CH(4), and (12)CD(4).

The vibrational excitations of bent triatomic molecules are studied by using Lie algebra. The RMS error of fitting 30 spectroscopic data is 1.66 cm-1 for SO2. The results show that the expansion of a molecular algebraic Hamiltonian can well describe the experimental data. And the total vibrational levels can be calculated using this Hamiltonian. At the same time, the potential energy surface can also be obtained with the algebraic Hamiltonian.

We present an electronic-structure and dynamics study of the Cl + C2H6 --> HCl + C2H5 reaction. The stationary points of the ground-state potential energy surface have been characterized using various electronic-structure methods and basis sets. Our best calculations, CCSD(T) extrapolated to the complete basis limit, using geometries and harmonic frequencies obtained at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level, are in agreement with the experimental reaction energy. Ab initio information has been used to reparameterize a semiempirical Hamiltonian so that the predictions of the improved Hamiltonian agree with the higher-level calculations in key regions of the potential energy surface. The improved semiempirical Hamiltonian is then used to propagate quasiclassical trajectories. Computed kinetic energy release and scattering angle distributions at a collision energy of approximately 5.5 kcal mol(-1) are in reasonable agreement with experiments, but no evidence was found for the low translational energy HCl products scattered in the backward hemisphere reported in recent experiments.

We present a method for the correction of errors in combined QM/MM calculations using a semiempirical Hamiltonian for enzyme reactions. Since semiempirical models can provide a reasonable representation of the general shape of the potential energy surface for chemical reactions, we introduce a simple valence bond-like (SVB) term to correct the energies at critical points on the potential energy surface. The present SVB term is not a stand-alone potential energy function, but it is used purely for introducing small energy corrections to the semiempirical Hamiltonian to achieve the accuracy needed for modeling enzymatic reactions. We show that the present coupled QM-SVB/MM approach can be parameterized to reproduce experimental and ab initio results for model reactions, and have applied the PM3-SVB/MM potential to the nucleophilic addition reaction in haloalkane dehalogenase. In a preliminary energy minimization study, the PM3-SVB/MM results are reasonable, suggesting that it may be used in free energy simulations to assess enzymatic reaction mechanism. We present an on-the-fly classical trajectory study of the Cl + CH(4)→ HCl + CH(3) reaction using a specific reaction parameter (SRP) AM1 Hamiltonian that was previously optimized for the Cl + ethane reaction [S. J. Greaves et al., J. Phys Chem A, 2008, 112, 9387]. The SRP-AM1 Hamiltonian is shown to be a good model for the potential energy surface of the title reaction. Calculated differential cross sections, obtained from trajectories propagated with the SRP-AM1 Hamiltonian compare favourably with experimental results for this system. Analysis of the vibrational modes of the methyl radical shows different scattering distributions for ground and vibrationally excited products.

We report calculations using a reaction surface Hamiltonian for which the vibrations of a molecule are represented by 3N-8 normal coordinates, Q, and two large amplitude motions, s(1) and s(2). The exact form of the kinetic energy operator is derived in these coordinates. The potential surface is first represented as a quadratic in Q, the coefficients of which depend upon the values of s(1),s(2) and then extended to include up to Q(6) diagonal anharmonic terms. The vibrational energy levels are evaluated by solving the variational secular equations, using a basis of products of Hermite polynomials and appropriate functions of s(1),s(2). Our selected example is malonaldehyde (N=9) and we choose as surface parameters two OH distances of the migrating H in the internal hydrogen transfer. The reaction surface Hamiltonian is ideally suited to the study of the kind of tunneling dynamics present in malonaldehyde. Our results are in good agreement with previous calculations of the zero point tunneling splitting and in general agreement with observed data. Interpretation of our two-dimensional reaction surface states suggests that the OH stretching fundamental is incorrectly assigned in the infrared spectrum. This mode appears at a much lower frequency in our calculations due to substantial transition state character.

We formulate an effective independent particle model where the effective Hamiltonian is composed of the Fock operator and a correlation potential. Within the model the kinetic energy and the exchange energy can be expressed exactly leaving the correlation energy functional as the remaining unknown. Our efforts concentrate on finding a correlation potential such that exact ionization potentials and electron affinities can be reproduced as orbital energies. The equation-of-motion coupled-cluster approach enables us to define an effective Hamiltonian from which a correlation potential can be extracted. We also make the connection to electron propagator theory. The disadvantage of the latter is the inherit energy dependence of the potential resulting in a different Hamiltonian for each orbital. Alternatively, the Fock space coupled-cluster approach employs an effective Hamiltonian which is energy independent and universal for all orbitals. A correlation potential is extracted which yields the exact ionization potentials and electron affinities and a set of associated molecular orbitals. We also describe the close relationship to Brueckner theory.

In this paper, we present a calculation for the bound states of A(1) symmetry on the spin-aligned Li(3)(1 (4)A(')) potential energy surface. We apply a mixture of discrete variable representation and distributed approximating functional methods to discretize the Hamiltonian. We also introduce a new method that significantly reduces the computational effort needed to determine the lowest eigenvalues and eigenvectors (bound state energies and wave functions of the full Hamiltonian). In our study, we have found the lowest 150 energy bound states converged to less than 0.005% error, and most of the excited energy bound states converged to less than 2.0% error. Furthermore, we have estimated the total number of the A(1) bound states of Li(3) on the spin-aligned Li(3)(1 (4)A(')) potential surface to be 601.
