The generation and processing of research data for modeling and simulation is an important part of the scientific work at WIAS. Together with scientific software it plays an essential role for the transfer of mathematical research results to industry or to other scientific disciplines. In the face of the emerging digital science agenda research data is now more and more recognized as an essential foundation for scientific work. The importance of research data is also emphasized by the recent adoption of the “DFG Guidelines on the Handling of Research Data” by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Open Data Pilot within the EU Horizon 2020 programme. University education for operational research in Britain is making great and welcome strides forward, but there has been little open discussion of its aims in relation to the advance of the profession. Progress in operational research, and in its application to the really worth-while problems of industry in particular, depends primarily on strengthening the industrial operational research group in its “front line” role. We need a research study of the teaching and practice of industrial operational research, in relation to effectiveness. We need “collaborative” programmes of operational research education in which the university and the industrial operational research group each contribute, in a man's training over a period of years, in the ways in which each is most competent. We need emphasis on “breadth” as well as “depth” in operational research education, and greater attention to the mutual contributions of operational research, teaching and practice, and the teaching and development of management. An impressionist sketch of a programme which might meet these needs is put forward for discussion of principles and feasibility. 相似文献

The link between standards and research may not be clearcut. However, in this article the authors argue that there is a notable relationship between standards and research, one that is cyclical in nature. Using the standards for school mathematics developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) as a case in point, the authors examine how NCTM's standards have influenced the agenda for mathematics education research and stimulated research on the impact of those standards. In turn, this and other research played a significant role in the development of NCTM's new Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. The authors conclude with a discussion of ways in which the Principles and Standards may continue this cyclical relationship in coming years, potentially promoting investigation of new research areas and systematic research on the impact of standards. 相似文献

Operations research and data mining already have a long-established common history. Indeed, with the growing size of databases and the amount of data available, data mining has become crucial in modern science and industry. Data mining problems raise interesting challenges for several research domains, and in particular for operations research, as very large search spaces of solutions need to be explored. Hence, many operations research methods have been proposed to deal with such challenging problems. But the relationships between these two domains are not limited to these natural applications of operations research approaches. The counterpart is also important to consider, since data mining approaches have also been applied to improve operations research techniques. The aim of this article is to highlight the interplay between these two research disciplines.
