Polymer monoliths are promising materials for sample preparation due to their high porosity, pH stability, and simple preparation. The use of melamine formaldehyde foams has been reported as an effective support to prepare highly robust silica and polymer monoliths. Herein, divinylbenzene monoliths based on a 50:50 (%, w/w) crosslinker/porogen ratio have been nested within a melamine-formaldehyde sponge, resulting in monoliths with a surface area higher than 400 m2/g. The extraction performance of these monoliths was evaluated for the extraction of endocrine-disrupting bisphenols from aqueous solutions. We evaluated for the first time the versatility of sponge-nested polymer monoliths by comparing three different extraction modes (vortex mixing, magnetic stirring, and orbital shaking). Vortex mixing showed a comparable recovery of bisphenols (39%–81%) in a shorter extraction time (30 min, instead of 2 h). In addition, the robustness of the sponge-nested polymer monoliths was demonstrated for the first time by reshaping a larger monolithic cube (0.125 cm3) into four smaller pieces (4 × 0.03125 cm3) leading to a 16%–21% increase in extraction efficiency. This effect was attributed to an increase in the effective contact area with the sample, obtaining a higher analyte extraction capacity.  相似文献

A convenient and industrially scalable method for synthesis of homogeneous nanocomposite films comprising poly(styrene‐stat‐butyl acrylate) and nanodimensional graphene oxide (GO) or reduced GO (rGO) is presented. Importantly, the nanocomposite latex undergoes film formation at ambient temperature, thus alleviating any need for high temperature or high pressure methods such as compression molding. The method entails synthesis of an aqueous nanocomposite latex via miniemulsion copolymerization relying on nanodimensional GO sheets as sole surfactant, followed by ambient temperature film formation resulting in homogeneous film. For comparison, a similar latex obtained by physical mixing of a polymer latex with an aqueous GO dispersion results in severe phase separation, illustrating that the miniemulsion approach using GO as surfactant is key to obtaining homogeneous nanocomposite films. Finally, it is demonstrated that the GO sheets can be readily reduced to rGO in situ by heat treatment of the film. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Lanthanide-encoded polystyrene particles synthesized by dispersion polymerization are excellent candidates for mass cytometry based immunoassays, however they have previously lacked the ability to conjugate biomolecules to the particle surface. We present here three approaches to post-functionalize these particles, enabling the covalent attachment of proteins. Our first approach used partially hydrolyzed poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) as a dispersion polymerization stabilizer to synthesize particles with high concentration of -COOH groups on the particle surface. In an alternative strategy to provide -COOH functionality to the lanthanide-encoded particles, we employed seeded emulsion polymerization to graft poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) chains onto the surface of these particles. However, these two approaches gave little to no improvement in the extent of bioconjugation. In our third approach, seeded emulsion polymerization was subsequently used as a method to grow a functional polymer shell (in this case, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA)) onto the surface of these particles, which proved highly successful. The epoxide-rich PGMA shell permitted extensive surface bioconjugation of NeutrAvidin, as probed by an Lu-labeled biotin reporter (ca. 7 × 10(5) binding events per particle with a very low amount of non-specific binding) and analyzed by mass cytometry. It was shown that coupling agents such as EDC were not needed, such was the reactivity of the particle surface. These particles were stable and the addition of a polymeric shell was shown did not affect the narrow lanthanide ion distribution within the particle interior as analyzed by mass cytometry. These particles represent the most promising candidates for the development of a highly multiplexed bioassay based on lanthanide-labeled particles to date.  相似文献

We have carried out extensive studies on the self-injection problem in barrierless heterojunctions between La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) and YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films. The heterojunctions were formed in situ by sequentially growing LCMO and YBCO films on 〈100〉 LaAlO3 (LAO) substrate using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system. YBCO micro-bridges with 64 μm width were patterned both on the LAO (control) and LCMO side of the substrate. Critical current, I c, was measured at 77 K on both the control side as well as the LCMO side for different YBCO film thickness. It was observed that while the control side showed a J c of ∼ 2 × 106 A/cm2, the LCMO side showed about half the value for the same thickness (1800 ?). The difference in J c indicates that a certain thickness of YBCO has become ‘effectively’ normal due to self-injection. From the measurement of J c at two different thicknesses (1800 ? and 1500 ?) of YBCO films both on the LAO as well as the LCMO side, the value of self-injection length (at 77 K) was estimated to be ∼ 900 ?. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first time that self-injection length has been quantified. A control experiment carried out with LaNiO3 deposited by PLD on YBCO did not show any evidence of self-injection.  相似文献

Summary Thermomagnetometry has been applied to mineralized archaeological iron samples and samples from accelerated corrosion tests. It has successfully quantified the degree of corrosion, measured by the loss of iron, as well as the amount of magnetite formed and water held in the corrosion and adhered soil layers. Thermomagnetometry, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry have been applied to the reported corrosion products from archaeological iron. Fourier transform infra-red and Raman spectroscopies and X-ray diffraction analyses were undertaken on the residues and at intermediate heating stages, where the thermal analyses indicated, to identify the reaction products.  相似文献

The synthesis of composite latex particles possessing core–shell and gradient morphologies, respectively, using seeded starve‐fed semibatch emulsion polymerization of styrene (St) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) is presented. The focus is on the effect of the monomer feed order on the particle morphology development. The particle morphology is assessed using a novel approach which entails comparing the experimental surface composition as a function of polymerization time (particle growth) obtained by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy with the predicted surface composition using a mass balance mathematical model. Both types of composite latexes (core–shell and gradient) feature changes with polymerization time in the oxygen/carbon surface composition which enables one to track the morphology development. Differential scanning calorimetry is also implemented to analyze the extent of phase separation. The monomer feed order is shown to play a crucial role—under the present conditions, gradient and core–shell particles are obtained if the feed order is St/MMA (St fed first), but not if the feed order is reversed. These findings illustrate that thermodynamic factors are important, given that thermodynamically it is more favorable for MMA‐rich chains to occupy the oil–water interface to reduce the interfacial tension. Systems where St is the second stage monomer lead to mixed structures rather than the targeted core–shell or gradient morphology with St‐rich chains at the particle surface. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The field of polymer chemistry is currently experiencing major research efforts into development of novel techniques for synthesis of polymers with well‐controlled microstructure. Recently, a new method has been reported [McHale et al., Nat. Chem. 2012, 4, 491–497] whereby high molecular weight and low dispersity polymer can be obtained by a radical polymerization process via the use of solely physico‐chemical interactions. This work was based on the combination of H‐bonding templated polymerization confined within nanoreactors of self‐assembled block copolymers. Herein, this system is thoroughly investigated to fully elucidate the underlying mechanism. Modification of physico‐chemical parameters, kinetic parameters as well as observations of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) results and colloidal behavior in various solvents provide revised insights into the mechanism. Through detailed NMR and SEC investigations, it is demonstrated that the SEC secondary peak originally believed to be the high molecular weight “daughter” polymer actually corresponds to nanoparticles containing the daughter polymer. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the early and intermediate stages of the guided dewetting of polystyrene (PS) thin films on chemically patterned silicon, achieved by micro-contact printing of non-wettable self-assembling monolayers of an alkylsilane. Two different types of ordered patterns could be achieved depending on the annealing temperature and time. Study of the dynamics of hole growth revealed a deviation of the growth profile from the trend on homogeneous substrates, attributed to the pinning of the PS rims on the borders of the hydrophobic regions. The ordered patterns produced could be useful in applications that require spatially localized features of controlled surface chemistry, such as studies in proteomics, single cell studies, and biosensors.  相似文献

Based on a recent report [J. Polym. Sci. Part A. Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 47–58] whereby we demonstrated the synthesis of polystyrene nanoparticles by miniemulsion polymerization stabilized by graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as sole surfactant, we hereby report the synthesis of hybrid polymer nanoparticles of several members of the (meth)acrylate family as well as the cross‐linker divinylbenzene via the same approach. The nature of the resultant emulsion is strongly linked to the polarity of the monomer used; monomers with a relatively small polar component (based on Hansen solubility parameters) such as lauryl methacrylate and benzyl methacrylate, in addition to styrene, generate stable emulsions that can be effectively polymerized. Particularly polar monomers (e.g., methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate) formed kinetically stable emulsions in the presence of GO, however rapid coagulation occurred during polymerization. Electron microscopy analysis reveals the formation of polymer nanoparticles with size distribution between 200 and 1000 nm with roughened surface morphologies, indicative of GO sheets adsorbed at the interface. The results of this work demonstrate the applicability of this synthetic route for specific monomers in the preparation of novel graphene‐based polymeric materials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J.
