Based on a recent report [J. Polym. Sci. Part A. Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 47–58] whereby we demonstrated the synthesis of polystyrene nanoparticles by miniemulsion polymerization stabilized by graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as sole surfactant, we hereby report the synthesis of hybrid polymer nanoparticles of several members of the (meth)acrylate family as well as the cross‐linker divinylbenzene via the same approach. The nature of the resultant emulsion is strongly linked to the polarity of the monomer used; monomers with a relatively small polar component (based on Hansen solubility parameters) such as lauryl methacrylate and benzyl methacrylate, in addition to styrene, generate stable emulsions that can be effectively polymerized. Particularly polar monomers (e.g., methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate) formed kinetically stable emulsions in the presence of GO, however rapid coagulation occurred during polymerization. Electron microscopy analysis reveals the formation of polymer nanoparticles with size distribution between 200 and 1000 nm with roughened surface morphologies, indicative of GO sheets adsorbed at the interface. The results of this work demonstrate the applicability of this synthetic route for specific monomers in the preparation of novel graphene‐based polymeric materials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. In the present work, for the first time we have designed a novel approach for the synthesis of N‐benzyl‐N‐aryl‐5‐amino‐1H‐tetrazoles using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated with Cu‐Ni bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs). In situ synthesis of Cu/Ni/rGO nanocomposite was performed by a cost efficient, surfactant‐free and environmentally benign method using Crataegus azarolus var. aronia L. leaf extract as a stabilizing and reducing agent. Phytochemicals present in the extract can be used to reduce Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions and GO to Cu NPs, Ni NPs and rGO, respectively. Analyses by means of FT‐IR, UV–Vis, EDS, TEM, FESEM, XRD and elemental mapping confirmed the Cu/Ni/rGO formation and also FT‐IR, NMR, and mass spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis were used to characterize the tetrazoles. The Cu/Ni/rGO nanocomposite showed the superior catalytic activity for the synthesis of N‐benzyl‐N‐aryl‐5‐amino‐1H‐tetrazoles within a short reaction time and high yields. Furthermore, this protocol eliminates the need to handle HN3.  相似文献

This study describes the synthesis of well‐defined nanocapsules via the miniemulsion technique. Pentaerythritol tetrakis(3‐mercaptopropionate) (TetraThiol) or 1,6‐hexanediol di(endo, exo‐norborn‐2‐ene‐5‐carboxylate) (DiNorbornene) is used as the oil phase. TetraThiol is encapsulated via the miniemulsion technique without polymerization, as this monomer would simultaneously act as a chain‐transfer agent, and DiNorbornene is encapsulated via miniemulsion polymerization of styrene. Various styrene‐maleic anhydride (PSMA) copolymers and poly(styrene‐maleic anhydride)‐block‐polystyrene (PSMA‐b‐PS) block copolymers were used as surfactant for the synthesis of well‐defined nanocapsules with TetraThiol as the core material. The nanocapsules had a diameter of 150–350 nm and the particle size distribution was narrow. The use of PSMA‐b‐PS block copolymers as surfactant in combination with post‐addition of formaldehyde provided improved stability to the nanocapsules. DiNorbornene was encapsulated via miniemulsion polymerization of styrene, and a stable latex with a bimodal particle size distribution was obtained. The distribution of small particles had a size of 60 nm and the distribution of large particles had a size of 150 nm. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Thin and ultrathin films of polyethylene of variable thickness are obtained from aqueous dispersions of prefabricated nanoscale crystals by spin‐coating. Continuous films with a thickness of only 15 nm, up to 220 nm, homogeneous over hundreds of μm, or assembled discontinuous monolayers of flat‐on lamella particles were prepared, depending on the solids content of the dispersion employed, as revealed by AFM and TEM. The morphology of melt‐recrystallized films was not affected by the surfactant present. Homogeneous continuous films without undesirable dewetting were retained upon melting and recrystallization of the films upon cooling, composed of polygonal spherulites for a thicker film (220 nm), randomly grown edge‐on lamella for a 40 nm film, and dominant flat‐on lamella for a 15 nm thick film. Annealing below Tm resulted in lamella thickening, without changes of crystal orientation or structure of the particle assemblies for discontinuous monolayers. Surfactant adsorbed to the nanocrystals in the aqueous dispersion desorbs at least partially during formation of the nascent films, and upon annealing below the melting point surfactant migrates to the film‐air interface to form aggregates, which can be removed by rinsing, during which the film stays intact and structurally unaltered as revealed, amongst others, by water contact angles. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer/SiO2 nanocomposite microspheres were prepared by double in situ miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, γ‐methacryloxy(propyl) trimethoxysilane, and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). By taking full advantage of phase separation between the growing polymer particles and TEOS, inorganic/polymer microspheres were fabricated successfully in a one‐step process with the formation of SiO2 particles and the polymerization of organic monomers taking place simultaneously. The morphology of nanocomposite microspheres and the microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal properties, and optical properties of the nanocomposite films were characterized and discussed. The results showed that hybrid microspheres had a raspberry‐like structure with silica nanoparticles on the shells of polymer. The silica particles of about 20 nm were highly dispersed within the nanocomposite films without aggregations. The transmittance of nanocomposite film was comparable to that of the copolymer film at around 70–80% from 400 to 800 nm. The mechanical properties and the fire‐retardant behavior of the polymer matrix were improved by the incorporation of silica nanoparticles. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graphene oxide (GO) is an amphiphilic soft material, which can accumulate at the water–air interface. However, GO sheets diffuse slowly in the aqueous phase because of their large size. It is still challenging to form high quality GO films in a controllable and simple way. In this study, we showed that GO sheets can quickly migrate to the water–air interface and form thin films when a suitable amount of acetone is directly mixed with a GO aqueous dispersion. The film formation rate and surface coverage of GO sheets depend on the volume of acetone added, GO dispersion concentration, and formation time. Among several organic solvents, acetone has its advantage for GO film formation owing to its three properties: a nonsolvent to GO aqueous dispersions, miscible with a GO aqueous dispersion, and fast evaporation. Furthermore, we have found that the film formation also is governed by the size of GO sheets and their oxygen content. Although smaller GO sheets could migrate to the water–air interface faster, the overlapping of small GO sheets and the increase in contact resistance is not desirable. A higher oxygen content in GO sheets could also result in smaller GO sheets. Multilayer GO films can be obtained through layer‐by‐layer dip‐coating. These findings open opportunities in developing simple scalable GO film fabrication processes.  相似文献

Graphene oxide (GO) can be viewed as an amphiphilic soft material, which form thin films at organic solvent-water interfaces. However, organic solvent evaporation provides little driving force, which results in slow GO transfer in aqueous phase, thus dawdling GO film formation processes for various potential applications. We present an ethanol-assisted self-assembly method for the quick formation of GO or GO-based composite thin films with tunable composition, transmittance, and surface resistivity at pentane-water interface. The thickness of pure GO and reduced GO (rGO) films ranging from ~1 nm to more than 10 nm can be controlled by the concentration of GO in bulk solution. The transmittance of rGO films can be tuned from 72% to 97% at 550 nm while the surface resistivity changes from 8.3 to 464.6 kΩ sq(-1). Ethanol is essential for achieving quick formation of GO thin films. When ethanol is injected into GO aqueous dispersion, it serves as a nonsolvent, compromising the stability of GO and providing driving force to allow GO sheets aggregate at the water-pentane interface. On the other hand, neither the evaporation of pentane nor the mixing between ethanol and water provides sufficient driving forces to allow noteworthy amount of GO sheets to migrate from the bulk aqueous phase to the interface. This method can also be extended to prepare GO-based composites thin films with tunable composition, such as GO/single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composite thin films investigated in this work. Reduced GO/SWCNT composite films show much lower surface resistivity compared to pure rGO thin films. This ethanol-assisted self-assembly method opens opportunities to design and fabricate new functional GO-based hybrid materials for various potential applications.  相似文献

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) find versatile applications as coatings due to their very high water‐repellency, self‐cleaning, and anti‐icing properties. This investigation describes the preparation of a SHS from surfactant‐free hybrid fluoropolymer latex. In this case, reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was adopted to prepare a copolymer of 4‐vinyl pyridine (4VP) and vinyl triethoxysilane (VTES), where the pyridine units were quaternized to make the copolymer soluble in water. The copolymer was further used as a macro‐RAFT agent to polymerize 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) in a surfactant‐free emulsion via polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA). The macro‐RAFT agent contained a small amount of VTES as co‐monomer which was utilized to graft silica nanoparticles (SNPs) onto the P(TFEMA) spheres. The film prepared using the nanocomposite latex exhibited a nano‐structured surface as observed by SEM and AFM analyses. Surface modification of the film with fluorinated trichlorosilane produced an SHS with a water contact angle (WCA) of 151.5°. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In this paper, we report the green synthesis of 1-(4-ferrocenylbutyl)piperazine chemically grafted rGO (P.Fc/rGO) as a battery-type supercapacitor electrode material. For this purpose, initially, the ability of the aqueous Damson fruit extract is investigated in the reduction reaction of graphene oxide (GO). 1-(4-ferrocenylbutyl)piperazine (P.Fc) is synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reaction of piperazine with as-synthesized 4-chlorobutylferrocene. In continue, P. Fc is incorporated to GO by ring-opening reaction of epoxide groups on the GO surface. In the next step, the modified reduction method by aqueous Damson fruit extract was used to prepare the P.Fc/rGO from P.Fc/GO. The prepared materials were characterized by various techniques including FT-IR, Uv–vis, XRD, SEM, EDX, and BET. N2 adsorption–desorption data of P.Fc/rGO nanocomposite shows that the surface area is 37.746 m2 g−1. The capability of P.Fc/rGO nanocomposite for using as an energy storage electrode material in battery-type supercapacitor was examined by investigation of its electrochemical behavior by CV, EIS, and GCD measurements. The charge storage capacity of 1,102 mAh g−1 is achieved at 2.5 A g−1. This nanocomposite shows 89% retention of charge storage capacity after 2000 CV cycles.  相似文献

A series of linear and lightly crosslinked nanostructured latices was prepared by a sequential multistage semicontinuous emulsion polymerization process alternating styrene (S) and n‐butyl acrylate (BA) monomer feeds five times, that is ten stages, and vice versa, along with several control latices. Transmission electron micrographs of the RuO4‐stained cross sections of nanostructured and copolymer latex particles and films showed that their particle morphologies were not very different from each other, but the nanostructured latex particles were transformed into a nanocomposite film containing both polystyrene (PS) and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) nanodomains interconnected by their diffuse polymer mixtures (i.e. interlayers). The thermal mechanical behaviors of the nanostructured latex films showed broad but single Tgs slightly higher than those of their counterpart copolymer films. These single Tgs indicated that their major component phases were the diffuse interlayers and that they behaved like pseudopolymer alloys. The minimum film formation temperatures of nanostructured latices capped with PBA and PS, respectively, were 15 °C lower than and equal to those of their counterpart copolymer latices, but their Tgs were about 10 °C higher. Consequently, nanostructured latices enabled us to combine good film formation with high strengths for adhesives and coatings applications. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer brushes decorated reduced GO (rGO) with advanced applications have been prepared by bioinspired polydopamine (PDA) chemistry integrated with activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET‐ATRP) technique. First, rGO/PDA was obtained by the process for graphene oxide (GO) coated with a homogeneous bio‐adhesive PDA layer. Then the initiator 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) was immobilized on the surface of PDA functionalized rGO. Finally, rGO/PDA‐Br was polymerized with N, N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to obtain rGO/PDA‐g‐polymer brushes by ARGET‐ATRP process. The prepared rGO/PDA‐g‐PGMA brush would be subjected to further functionalization with ethylenediamine (EDA), which would impart the obtained products (rGO/PDA‐g‐PGMA‐NH2) with good adsorption ability toward cationic dyes. The chemical structures and morphologies of the functionalized GO products have been characterized in detail by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope(TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The distinctive pH‐responsive character of rGO/PDA‐g‐PDEAEMA and adsorption ability of rGO/PDA‐g‐PGMA‐NH2 for cationic dyes have been explored by UV–vis spectrophotometer. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, we report a mild and efficient strategy for growing thermosensitive polymers directly from the surface of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO). Exfoliated GO sheets were sequentially subject to the epoxide ring‐opening reaction with tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (TRIS) to increase the amount of reactive sites, the esterification with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide to introduce the Br‐containing initiating groups, and the surface‐initiated single electron transfer–living radical polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) to tune the molecular weights of grafted polymers. All these reactions were performed at ambient temperature without losing any other oxygen‐containing functionality on GO. The resulting TRIS‐GO‐PNIPAM nanocomposites still maintain the separated single layers in dispersion, and the dispersibilities in organic solvents are significantly improved. Meanwhile, the aqueous dispersion of TRIS‐GO‐PNIPAM shows reversible temperature switching self‐assembly and disassembly behavior at about 40°C. Such smart graphene‐based hybrid materials are promising for applications in nanoelectronics, sensors, and microfluidic switches. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graphene nanosheets offer intriguing electronic, thermal and mechanical properties and are expected to find a variety of applications in high‐performance nanocomposite materials. The great challenge of exfoliating and dispersing pristine graphite or graphene sheets in various solvents or matrices can be achieved by facilely and properly chemical functionalization of the carbon nanosheets. Here we reported an efficient way to functionalize graphene sheets with presynthesized polymer via a combination of atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling chemistry with the grafting‐onto strategy, which enable us to functionalize graphene sheets with well‐defined polymer synthesized via living radical polymerization. A radical scavenger species, 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO), was firstly anchored onto ? COOH groups on graphene oxide (GO) to afford TEMPO‐functionalized graphene sheets (GS‐TEMPO), meanwhile, the GO sheets were thermally reduced. Next, GS‐TEMPO reacted with Br‐terminated well‐defined poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) homopolymer, which was presynthesized by SET‐LRP, in the presence of CuBr/N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine to form PNIPAM‐graphene sheets (GS‐PNIPAM) nanocomposite in which the polymers were covalently linked onto the graphene via the alkoxyamine conjunction points. The PNIPAM‐modified graphene sheets are easily dispersible in organic solvents and water, and a temperature‐induced phase transition was founded in the water suspension of GS‐PNIPAM. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we examine the rate of film build-up and the evolution of polymer volume fraction in coagulant dipped films. The results are for nitrile and natural rubber compounds. We describe a model for the build-up of a latex film that coagulates onto a former as a wet gel and consolidates by a wet sintering process. We achieve this by applying diffusion and reaction kinetics for the coagulant transporting from a former into the latex bath. Wet sintering, the underlying mechanism for serum exudation from the wet gel, is modelled for a consolidating aggregate of latex particles. The parameters used in the models are either measured in separate experiments or are available from the literature. We compare the model predictions with the experimental results. The first, rapid, stage of film build-up is modelled successfully by simple diffusion of the coagulant cations. At longer dwell times, it is found that the reaction between coagulant and surfactant is the primary mechanism for the rate reduction. The rate of consolidation of the wet gel could be modelled reasonably well using a previously developed equation for latex film formation. The rate was chiefly dependent on the stress relaxation modulus of the polymer. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2017 , 55, 1633–1648  相似文献

Polystyrene particles “armoured” with nanosized graphene oxide (GO) sheets have been prepared by aqueous miniemulsion polymerization of styrene, exploiting the amphiphilic properties of GO in the absence of conventional surfactants. The nanoscale GO sheets were prepared from graphite nanofibers of diameter approximately 100 nm based on a novel procedure, thus effectively ensuring the absence of larger sheets. Polymerization proceeded to high conversion with minor coagulation, with final number‐average particle diameters of approximately 500 nm, but relatively broad particle size distributions. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed particles with a textured surface, consistent with the expected morphology. Interestingly, analysis of GO sheets recovered from the polymerization revealed that the GO sheets are partially reduced during the polymerization—approximately 50% of the initial carboxyl groups of the GO were lost, consistent with some loss in colloidal stability at high conversion. The overall approach offers a convenient and attractive synthetic route to novel graphene‐based polymeric nanostructures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

Cast‐hybrid films composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and silver nitrate were treated according to three different ways, thermal annealing, UV‐irradiation, and chemical reduction by a borohydride solution, to obtain PVA/silver nanocomposite films. The nanostructuration process was studied as a function of the treatment conditions, and discussed as a function of the mobility state of the polymer chains in the nanocomposite matrix during treatment. A homogeneous dispersion of crystalline silver nanoparticles was obtained by thermal annealing above Tg and below Tm and UV‐lamp irradiation below Tg. For these two treatments, the major processing parameters were the annealing temperature and time and the UV‐exposure time, respectively. For low‐conversion rate in Ag(0), the films evolved upon ageing at room temperature. Totally different morphology and Ag(0) conversion were achieved by chemical reduction in a borohydride solution. All the silver ions were reduced into Ag(0), and crystalline silver nanoparticles layers parallel to the film surface were observed after the treatment. This morphology was related to the high‐swollen state of the polymer matrix during treatment. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 2062–2071, 2008  相似文献

The layer‐by‐layer (LBL) assembly technique is an attractive method to make functional multilayer thin films and has been applied to fabricate a wide range of materials. LBL materials could improve optical transmittance and mechanical properties if the film components were covalently bonded. Covalently bonded nanocomposite multilayer films were prepared by employing hydrophilic aliphatic polyisocyanate (HAPI) as the reactive component, to react with Laponite and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). FT‐IR spectra suggested that HAPI reacted with Laponite and PVA at ambient temperature rapidly. Ellipsometry measurement showed that the film thickness was in linear growth. The influences of HAPI on the optical, mechanical and thermal properties of the films were investigated by UV‐Vis spectroscopy, tensile stress measurement, DSC and TGA. The obtained results showed that the optical transmittance and mechanical strength were enhanced when the film components were covalently bonded by HAPI. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Solution and aqueous miniemulsion polymerizations of vinyl chloride (VC) mediated by (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8‐tridecafluorooctyl‐2‐((ethoxycarbonothioyl)thio) propanoate) (X1) were studied. The living characters of X1‐mediated solution and miniemulsion polymerizations of VC were confirmed by polymerization kinetics. The miniemulsion polymerization exhibits higher rate than solution polymerization. Final conversions of VC in the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization reach as high as 87% and are independent of X1 concentration. Initiation process of X1‐mediated RAFT miniemulsion polymerization is controlled by the diffusion–adsorption process of prime radicals. Due to the heterogeneity of polymerization environments and concentration fluctuation of RAFT agent in droplets or latex particles, PVCs prepared in RAFT miniemulsion exhibit relatively broad molecular weight distribution. Furthermore, chain extensions of living PVC (PVC‐X) with VC, vinyl acetate (VAc), and N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) reveal that PVC‐X can be reinitiated and extended, further confirming the living nature of VC RAFT polymerization. PVC‐b‐PVAc diblock copolymer is successfully synthesized by the chain extension of PVC‐X in RAFT miniemulsion polymerization. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. This work reports on the steady state fluorescence (SSF) technique for studying film formation from surfactant‐free, nano‐sized polystyrene (PS) latex particles prepared via emulsion polymerization. The latex films were prepared from pyrene (P)‐labeled PS particles at room temperature and annealed at elevated temperatures in 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min time intervals above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PS. During the annealing processes, the transparency of the film was improved considerably. Monomer and excimer fluorescence intensities, IP and IE respectively, from P were measured after each annealing step to monitor the stages of film formation. Evolution of transparency of the latex films was monitored by using photon transmission intensity, Itr. Void closure and interdiffusion stages were modeled and related activation energies were determined and found to be 10.3 and 50.3 kJ mol−1. Void closure temperatures, Tv, were determined from the minima of Itr value. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the presence of β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD), reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization has been successfully applied to control the molecular weight and polydispersity [weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight (Mw/Mn)] in the miniemulsion polymerization of butyl methacrylate, with 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate as a chain‐transfer agent (or RAFT agent) and 2,2′‐azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. β‐CD acted as both a stabilizer and a solubilizer, assisting the transportation of the water‐insoluble, low‐molecular‐weight RAFT agent into the polymerization loca (i.e., droplets or latex particles) and thereby ensuring that the RAFT agent was homogeneous in the polymerization loca. The polymers produced in the system of β‐CD exhibited narrower polydispersity (1.2 < Mw/Mn < 1.3) than those without β‐CD. Moreover, the number‐average molecular weight in the former case could be controlled by a definite amount of the RAFT agent. Significantly, β‐CD was proved to have a favorable effect on the stability of polymer latex, and no coagulum was observed. The effects of the concentrations of the RAFT agent and AIBN on the conversion, the molecular weight and its distribution, and the particle size of latices were investigated in detail. Furthermore, the influences of the variations of the surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and costabilizer (hexadecane) on the RAFT/miniemulsion polymerization were also studied. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
