The Role of Information in Managing Interactions from a Multifractal Perspective

In the framework of the multifractal hydrodynamic model, the correlations informational entropy–cross-entropy manages attractive and repulsive interactions through a multifractal specific potential. The classical dynamics associated with them imply Hubble-type effects, Galilei-type effects, and dependences of interaction constants with multifractal degrees at various scale resolutions, while the insertion of the relativistic amendments in the same dynamics imply multifractal transformations of a generalized Lorentz-type, multifractal metrics invariant to these transformations, and an estimation of the dimension of the multifractal Universe. In such a context, some correspondences with standard cosmologies are analyzed. Since the same types of interactions can also be obtained as harmonics mapping between the usual space and the hyperbolic plane, two measures with uniform and non-uniform temporal flows become functional, temporal measures analogous with Milne’s temporal measures in a more general manner. This work furthers the analysis published recently by our group in “Towards Interactions through Information in a Multifractal Paradigm”.

The Lewis acidities of gold(I) and gold(III) derivatives: a theoretical study of complexes of AuCl and AuCl3

Chloride complexes of gold(I) (seventeen) and gold(III) (seventeen) with different ligands (including H, C, N, O, P, S as interacting atoms) have been studied at the CCSD(T)/CBS level. The computed geometries were compared with those found in the Cambridge Structural Database and the dissociation energies related with those previously reported in the literature by Yamamoto et al. Some special processes catalysed by these gold complexes such as bond-breaking (dihydrogen, cyclopropane) and arenes reactivity were studied in detail.

     

Amphiphilic pentablock copolymers and their blends with PDMS for antibiofouling coatings

Well‐defined amphiphilic pentablock copolymers Siy‐(EGx‐FAz)₂ composed of polysiloxane (Si), polyethylene glycol (EG), and perfluorohexylethyl polyacrylate (FA) blocks are synthesized by ATRP of FA monomer starting from a difunctional bromo‐terminated macroinitiator. Diblock copolymers EGx‐FAz are also synthesized as model systems. The block copolymers are used, either alone or blended with a PDMS matrix in varied loadings, to prepare antibiofouling coatings. Angle‐resolved XPS and contact angle measurements show that the coating surface is highly enriched in fluorine content but undergoes reconstruction after contact with water. Protein adsorption experiments with human serum albumin and calf serum highlight that diblock copolymers resist protein adhesion better than do pentablock copolymers. Blending of the pentablock copolymer with PDMS results in increased protein adsorption. By contrast, the PDMS‐matrix coatings show high removal percentages of sporelings of the green fouling alga Ulva linza. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Control over the Self‐Assembly Modes of PtII Complexes by Alkyl Chain Variation: From Slipped to Parallel π‐Stacks

We report the self‐assembly of a new family of hydrophobic, bis(pyridyl) Pt^II complexes featuring an extended oligophenyleneethynylene‐derived π‐surface appended with six long (dodecyloxy ( 2 )) or short (methoxy ( 3 )) side groups. Complex 2 , containing dodecyloxy chains, forms fibrous assemblies with a slipped arrangement of the monomer units (d_Pt???Pt≈14 Å) in both nonpolar solvents and the solid state. Dispersion‐corrected PM6 calculations suggest that this organization is driven by cooperative π–π, C?H???Cl and π–Pt interactions, which is supported by EXAFS and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis. In contrast, nearly parallel π‐stacks (d_Pt???Pt≈4.4 Å) stabilized by multiple π–π and C?H???Cl contacts are obtained in the crystalline state for 3 lacking long side chains, as shown by X‐ray analysis and PM6 calculations. Our results reveal not only the key role of alkyl chain length in controlling self‐assembly modes but also show the relevance of Pt‐bound chlorine ligands as new supramolecular synthons.     

Aerosol‐Assisted Synthesis of Porous TiNxOy@C Nanocomposites

Porous TiN_xO_y‐based particles were synthesized by an aerosol spray process. At first, the starting sol solution containing the metal precursor and the nitrogen source is sprayed to form an aerosol that is subsequently pyrolysed at different temperatures. The obtained dried particles are an amorphous coordination “polymer” rich in carbon and nitrogen. These “glassy” particles are finally thermally treated at 800 °C, promoting the crystallization of the particles and the release of a major part of the carbon. As the particles keep their original shape, carbon loss and density increase during the crystallization step and lead to the development of an accessible pore structure. The process was analyzed and extended to the synthesis of other metal nitrides, such as VN and W₂N, thereby showing its general validity for the production of functional nanocrystalline nitride ceramics with high porosity still occupying a relatively small volume, and otherwise not easily accessible.
