Stereocontrolled synthesis of a potent antimalarial alkaloid, (+)-febrifugine

A novel and stereocontrolled synthetic path to a potential antimalarial piperidine alkaloid, (+)-febrifugine, was established by employing the reductive deamination and simultaneous recyclization of a proline derivative with samarium diiodide, as a key step.     

Thermolysis of reactive oligo(p-phenylene sulfide) containing disulfide bond

Oligo(phenylene sulfide) (OPS) containing one disulfide bond at the end of the chain, which was obtained by the oxidative polymerization of diphenyl disulfide, had a relatively low Td_10%(temperature for 10% weight loss) of 412 °C because of degradation of the disulfide bond. But this thermal cleavage of the disulfide bond promoted the curing reaction through thiophenoxy radical formation. OPS was allowed to react with diiodobenzene at 220 °C. The thermal stability of OPS was improved through the consumption of the disulfide bond and the coupling of the chain.     

On the bromine variations in mouse lymphoma

Bromine and chlorine concentrations in some tissues (liver, spleen, thymus) of healthy mice (normal group) and lymphomatous mice (lymphoma group) were determined by neutron activation analysis. There were significant differences in the Br concentrations of the tissues between the normal and lymphomatous group, while the Cl concentrations were found relatively constant in all the tissues. As a result, the Br/Cl ratios in the tissues of the lymphomatous group were significantly higher than those of the normal group. It was difficult to conclude that Br was absorbed into the bodies of lymphomatous mice more easily than was Cl. It is suggested that Br excretion from the body is suppressed.     

Photoinduced face-inversion of conjugated tetraene ligands on a Pd-Pd-Pd moiety

The linear sandwich tripalladium complexes [Pd3{Ar(CH=CH)4Ar}2[BArf]2 (Ar = Ph, p-t-Bu-C6H4, p-styryl-C6H4) undergo photoinduced isomerization involving face-inversion of the tetraene ligands. Irradiation of these complexes with visible light (>510 nm) resulted in rac (staggered sandwich) to meso (eclipsed sandwich) isomerization. The structures of rac and meso isomers are determined by X-ray crystallographic analyses.     

Synthesis of poly(2,5-dimethylphenylene sulfide) through oxidative polymerization of sulfur chloride with p-xylene

Poly(2,5-dimethylphenylene sulfide) was prepared by oxidative polymerization of sulfur chloride with p-xylene using 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) as an oxidizing agent. The reaction proceeded efficiently under atmospheric pressure and at room temperature. The polymer formed had a high melting temperature and linear structure which was confirmed by spectroscopies. The effects of reaction time, solvent, temperature and oxidizing agent on polymerization are also discussed.     

Oligothiophene-containing coumarin dyes for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

We have developed oligothiophene-containing coumarin dyes fully functionalized for dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO(2) solar cells (DSSCs). DSSCs based on the dyes gave good performance in terms of incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) in the range of 400-800 nm. A solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency (eta) of 7.4% was obtained with a DSSC based on 2-cyano-3-[5'-(1,1,6,6-tetramethyl-10-oxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-1H,4H,10H-11-oxa-3a-aza-benzo[de]anthracen-9-yl)-[2,2']bithiophenyl-5-yl]acrylic acid (NKX-2677) under simulated AM 1.5G irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)) with a mask: short-circuit current density (J(sc)) = 13.5 mA cm(-2); open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) = 0.71 V; fill factor (FF) = 0.77. Transient absorption spectroscopy measurements indicated that electron injection from NKX-2677 to the conduction band of TiO(2) is very rapid (<100 fs), which is much faster than the emission lifetime of the dye (1.0 ns), giving a highly efficient electron injection yield of near unity.     

Photometric determination of micro amounts of thiosulphate by means of its cyanolysis with lanthanum(III) as catalyst

Lanthanum(III) has been found to catalyse the reaction of thiosulphate with cyanide. The effects of pH, reaction time and temperature, amount of cyanide and lanthanum, and order of addition of reagents have been investigated. Temperature has little effect in the range 10–30°, but at both 35° and 40° the rate is noticeably faster. Reaction is complete at room temperature in 1.5 hr at pH 9.3–9.6, and in 3 hr at pH 9.1–9.6. The method can be applied to the determination of 1.0 × 10⁻⁵−6.0 × 10⁻⁴M thiosulphate, with a relative standard deviation of 0.3% for 4 × 10⁻⁴M thiosulphate.     

Hydrogen Gas Sensing of High Electrical Conducting-P2O5-SiO2 Glasses Prepared by Sol-Gel Process

High proton-conducting P₂O₅-SiO₂ glass was applied to the electrolyte of the hydrogen concentration cell for hydrogen gas sensing. 5P₂O₅·95SiO₂ glass was prepared using the sol-gel method and its electrical conductivity and electromotive force were measured at 50°C as a function of both the ambient humidity and hydrogen gas concentration. The electrical conductivities increased with increasing humidity and reached 10^–2 S/cm at 90% relative humidity. The electromotive force of the hydrogen concentration cell, where the glass was used as a membrane, showed good Nernstian response to hydrogen pressure in the high relative humidity region.
