Sense and nonsense of quality assurance in an R&D environment

Quality has always been one of the key issues in laboratories in general and formal quality assurance (QA) in testing laboratories has gained popularity over the last decade. However, the implementation QA in research and development (R&;D) laboratories is still the domain of a few pioneers. We can even ask whether a QA system in research makes sense at all and if such a system really provides any added value? Difficulties with respect to the implementation of such a system are mainly associated with the nature of the research process itself. However, it is obvious that QA offers clear advantages in R&;D, if some critical success factors have been taken into account. An important issue is the selection of a good QA standard for R&;D. This is certainly not an easy task, since there are no specific standards. Fortunately, some useful international guides have been published recently.

Compliance with GLP standards and management in analytical laboratories: current status

 Analytical laboratories in Japan, operating more often as departments within a company than as independent contractors, have to contend with different good laboratory practice (GLP) standards. Problems also occur in the analytical laboratories which must comply with GLP, good manufacturing practice (GMP) and good clinical practice (GCP) regulations within the same facility. The status of these GLP-complied analytical laboratories is reviewed with regard to assurance program, validation method, laboratory information management, and security systems. The differences in the responsible authorities and scopes under the six GLPs are also briefly described. Analytical tests in GLP are not itemized as a test for accreditation. Therefore, the accreditation of analytical laboratories in Japan is currently granted as a part of ISO 9000 approvals. Received: 27 September 1996 Accepted: 11 November 1996     

How medical quality is improved: clinical management of patients with acute cardiac ischaemia

The clinical management of patients with acute ischaemic syndromes continues to evolve. It is therefore useful to review the most common categories of such patients, with specific emphasis on the contribution of some well-known laboratory assessments. Key questions on diagnosis, prognosis and medical quality are discussed.Presented at the 9th Conference on Quality in the Spotlight, 18–19 March 2004, Antwerp, Belgium     

Polarization of Lidar Returns from Water Clouds: Calculations and Laboratory Scaled Measurements

The main features of a Monte Carlo code developed to deal with polarization of lidar returns from water clouds in multiple scattering regime are described. The paper presents an example of results pertaining to a stratified cloud structure, and a series of comparisons of calculation results with measurements carried out in the laboratory. For double scattering a comparison of Monte Carlo results with those of an analytical formula is also given.Presented at the 7th International Workshop on Multiple Scattering Lidar/Light Experiments (MUSCLE7), July 21–23 1994, Chiba, Japan.

介绍了国内化学废弃物处置方面的相关法规和管理办法,并以美国休斯顿大学为例,介绍了美国高校实验室废弃物处置机制,包括法规、机构、管理办法、责任等。以2010至2011年间美国化学会Journal of Chemical Education期刊中涉及废弃物处置的四个教学实验,阐述了"3R"(循环、减量、再利用)绿色化学原则。最后以北京大学为例,介绍我国高校化学实验室对废弃物处理的做法。
