Another complete invariant for Steiner triple systems of order 15

In this note, the 80 non‐isomorphic triple systems on 15 points are revisited from the viewpoint of the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of their blocks. The main observation is that the numbers, of facets of these 80 polyhedra are all different, thus producing a new proof of the non‐isomorphism of these triple systems. The space dimension of these polyhedra is also discussed. Finally, we observe the large number of facets of some of these polyhedra with few vertices, in relation with the upper bound problem for combinatorial polyhedra. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pseudo-atoms, atoms and a Jordan type decomposition in effect algebras

The aim of this paper is to introduce and investigate the concept of pseudo-atoms of a real-valued function m defined on an effect algebra L; a few examples of pseudo-atoms and atoms are given in the context of null-additive, null-null-additive and pseudo-null-additive functions and also, some fundamental results for pseudo-atoms under the assumption of null-null-additivity are established. The notions of total variation |m|, positive variation m⁺ and negative variation m⁻ of a real-valued function m on L are studied elaborately and it is proved for a modular measure m (which is of bounded total variation) defined on a D-lattice L that, m is pseudo-atomic (or atomic) if and only if its total variation |m| is pseudo-atomic (or atomic). Finally, a Jordan type decomposition theorem for an extended real-valued function m of bounded total variation defined on an effect algebra L is proved and some properties on decomposed parts of m such as continuity from below, pseudo-atomicity (or atomicity) and being measure, are discussed. A characterization for the function m to be of bounded total variation is established here and used in proving above-mentioned Jordan type decomposition theorem.

Poroacoustic solitary waves under the unidirectional Darcy–Jordan model

Working in the context of poroacoustics, we present new, physically relevant, explicit solutions to the Cauchy problem for the model we term the (1D) damped Riemann equation. The solitary waveforms that evolve from both Lorentzian ($C^{\infty }$-smooth) and symmetric-exponential ($C^0$-smooth) initial conditions are analyzed, the focus being on wave overturning and the evolution/structure of the shocks which develop thereafter. In addition to those for both the multi- and single-valued forms of each solution, expressions for the shock amplitude, velocity, and critical values of the physical parameters are derived/compared. Lastly, links to other areas of continuum physics, and possible follow-on investigations, are noted.

Asymptotics of Christoffel functions on arcs and curves

For a system of smooth Jordan curves and arcs asymptotics for Christoffel functions is established. A separate new method is developed to handle the upper and lower estimates. In the course to the upper bound a theorem of Widom on the norm of Chebyshev polynomials is generalized.
