Exceptional Family of Elements for a Variational Inequality Problem and its Applications

This paper introduces a new concept of exceptional family of elements (abbreviated, exceptional family) for a finite-dimensional nonlinear variational inequality problem. By using this new concept, we establish a general sufficient condition for the existence of a solution to the problem. Such a condition is used to develop several new existence theorems. Among other things, a sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of pseudo-monotone variational inequality problem is proved. The notion of coercivity of a function and related classical existence theorems for variational inequality are also generalized. Finally, a solution condition for a class of nonlinear complementarity problems with so-called P _* -mappings is also obtained.     

Variations of Robin capacity and applications

We obtain some estimates for the distortions of the moduli of quadrilaterals, the reduced moduli, and Robin capacities depending on the variation of the boundary of a domain. We show that for sufficiently smooth variations of the boundary the corresponding variations of the moduli and capacities are proportional to the area of the variable part of the domain in some extremal metric. We apply these results to studying the generalized Lavrent’ev problem of finding the shape of an infinitely thin airfoil of given length with the maximal aerodynamical lift under some restriction on the curvature of the airfoil.

Normal families and uniqueness theorems for entire functions

There exists a set S with 3 elements such that if f is a non-constant entire function satisfying E(S,f)=E(S,f′), then f≡f′. The number 3 is best possible. The proof uses the theory of normal families in an essential way.

Computational experience with known variable metric updates

Variable metric methods from the Broyden family are well known and commonly used for unconstrained minimization. These methods have good theoretical and practical convergence properties which depend on a selection of free parameters. We demonstrate, using extensive computational experiments, the influence of both the Biggs stabilization parameter and Oren scaling parameter on 12 individual variable metric updates, two of which are new. This paper focuses on a class of variable metric updates belonging to the so-called preconvex part of the Broyden family. These methods outperform the more familiar BFGS method. We also experimentally demonstrate the efficiency of the controlled scaling strategy for problems of sufficient size and sparsity.     

Wijsman and Hit-and-Miss Topologies of Quasi-Metric Spaces

The relationship between the Wijsman topology and (proximal) hit-and-miss topologies is studied in the realm of quasi-metric spaces. We establish the equivalence between these hypertopologies in terms of Urysohn families of sets. Our results generalize well-known theorems and provide easier proofs. In particular, we prove that for a quasi-pseudo-metrizable space (X,T) the Vietoris topology on the set P ₀(X) of all nonempty subsets of X is the supremum of all Wijsman topologies associated with quasi-pseudo-metrics compatible with T. We also show that for a quasi-pseudo-metric space (X,d) the Hausdorff extended quasi-pseudo-metric is compatible with the Wijsman topology on P ₀(X) if and only if d ^–1 is hereditarily precompact.
