Electrothermal volatilization of aluminum as 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoylpyrazolone[5] chelate for gaseous sample introduction in ICP-AES

Based on gaseous compound introduction as 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoylpyrazolone[5](PMBP) chelate of aluminum by electrothermal vaporization in ICP-AES, a method for determination of trace aluminum was developed. Trace aluminum was vaporized at temperature of 1000 degrees C, and the vaporization behavior of aluminum chelate was detailedly investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limit of aluminum was 0.6 ng ml(-1), and the relative standard deviation for 0.1 mug ml(-1) aluminum was 4.7% (n=8). The proposed method was applied to the determination of trace aluminum in rice flour reference materials, and the results well agreed with the reference values.

A new method for determination of uric acid by the lactic acid-acetone-BrO(3)(-)-Mn(2+)-H(2)SO(4) oscillating reaction using the analyte pulse perturbation technique

A new analytical method for the determination of uric acid (UA) by the perturbation of UA on the Belousov-Zhabotinsky oscillating reaction is proposed. The method is based on the linear relationship between the changes in the oscillating period and the concentration of UA. The calibration curve is linear over the range of 2.0 × 10⁻⁵ to 5.0 × 10⁻⁴ M, with a detecting limit of 3.28 × 10⁻⁶ M. The method features good precision (R.S.D.: 3.59%) and excellent throughput (10 samples h⁻¹). The possible mechanism of the perturbation of UA on the oscillating reaction is discussed.

Photocatalytic Oxidation of Aniline in the Gas Phase Using Porous TiO2 Thin Films

The gas-phase photocatalytic oxidation of aniline on a new kind of porous nano-TiO₂ composite films is investigated. The composite film was prepared on glass fiber with the water glass as binders and dilute H₂SO₄ solution as solidifying reagent. The surface characters were observed by scanning electron microscope. The photocatalytic degradation of aniline on the composite films was carried out in a TiO₂/UV system. Some important factors affecting the photodegradation, such as the concentration of TiO₂, the initial concentration of aniline, and the existing water vapor, are also studied. The product of photocatalytic oxidation was detected by Fourier transform-Infrared. The partial intermediate products were absorbed on TiO₂ surface, which resulted in catalyst deactivation. But when it was irradiated under UV illumination or solar irradiation for some time, the catalyst could be reused without loss of catalytic activity. Fluorometric investigation of the interaction of bovine serum albumin with surfactants and 6-mercaptopurine

Fluorescence quenching in solutions of bovine serum albumin has been investigated in the presence of 6-mercaptopurine and ionic surfactants. Spectroscopic analysis of the emission quenching at different temperatures revealed that the quenching mechanism of bovine serum albumin by 6-mercaptopurine was dynamic quenching mechanism. The Stern–Volmer quenching model has been successfully applied, and the activation energy of the interaction between 6-mercaptopurine and bovine serum albumin as much as 4.26 kJ mol⁻¹ was calculated. The distance r between donor (bovine serum albumin) and acceptor (6-mercaptopurine) was obtained according to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The result of synchronous fluorescence spectra shows that the conformation of bovine serum albumin has been changed at the present of 6-mercaptopurine.     

Speciation of dissolved iron(II) and iron(III) in environmental water samples by gallic acid-modified nanometer-sized alumina micro-column separation and ICP-MS determination

A method has been developed for the speciation of trace dissolved Fe(II) and Fe(III) in water by coupling gallic acid (GA) modified nanometer-sized alumina micro-column separation with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The separation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) was achieved based on the obvious difference in reaction kinetics between Fe(II) and Fe(III) with GA. Fe(III) was selectively retained on the micro-column at pH 5.5-6.5, while Fe(II) could not be retained by the micro-column at the whole tested pH range of 1.0-6.5, and passed through the micro-column. The Fe(II) can be determined by ICP-MS directly without preconcentration/separation procedure, while Fe(III) retained on the micro-column was then eluted with 1.0 mL of 1 mol L(-1) HCl and determined by ICP-MS. The parameters affecting the separation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) were investigated systematically and the optimum separation conditions were established. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limits of 0.48 microg L(-1) and 0.24 microg L(-1) with relative standard deviation of 5.6% and 4.3%(C= 5 microg L(-1), n= 7) for Fe(II) and Fe(III) were found, respectively. No obvious effect on the speciation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) was found with the change of the ratio of Fe(II) and Fe(III) from 0 ratio 10 to 10 ratio 0. The proposed method was applied for the determination of trace Fe(II) and Fe(III) in environmental water and the recoveries for spiked samples were found to be in the range of 97-105%.     

INFLUENCE OF MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND PERIODATE-MODIFICATION OF β-D-GLUCANS FROM PORIA COCOS SCLEROTIUM ON ANTITUMOR ACTIVITIES*

In this work, influence of molecular weight and periodate modification ofβ-D-glucans isolated from Poria cocos sclerotium on the antitumor activities against Sar-coma 180 and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) tumor was studied. The results show thattwo glucans PC3 (linear β-(1→3)-D-glucan) and PC4 [β-(1→3)-D-glucan with a fewof branches and glucuronic acid] are devoid of antitumor activity. However, when theglucans were modified by periodate oxidation, borohydride reduction and mild hydrolysisor partially hydrolysis, the derivatives have obvious antitumor activities. The decreasein molecular weight of glucans after periodate modification hardly affects their antitumoractions, but on the other hand, the decrease of molecular weight without periodate modi-fication could lead to an enhancement of the antitumor activities. Moreover, the glucansand these derivatives have much higher enhancement ratios of body weight of mice thanthat of 5-Fluorouracil (5-Fu), suggesting that they are less toxic than 5-Fu.
