Spin structures on instanton moduli spaces

We determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for the based SU(l)-instanton moduli spaces over CP² and the unbased SU(2)-instanton moduli spaces over S⁴ having spin structures.     

Forcing absoluteness and regularity properties

For a large natural class of forcing notions, we prove general equivalence theorems between forcing absoluteness statements, regularity properties, and transcendence properties over and the core model . We use our results to answer open questions from set theory of the reals.     

Design of New Reaction Fields for Spherical Polypyrrole Particle Synthesis

Summary: Polypyrrole conducting polymers have been investigated widely for various applications because of their thermal and environmental stability and good electrical conductivity. Using chemical oxidative polymerization for the synthesis of polypyrrole particles, the reaction rate is very fast. In this study, we designed two new reaction fields for the synthesis of spherical polypyrrole nanoparticles. In the first system, oxidative polymerization of monomer droplets infused in a water/oil (W/O) emulsion reaction field was investigated. The second system employed dispersed monomer in an aqueous solution with a low concentration of oxidant in which polymerization was augmented by ultrasonic irradiation. Effective control of the reaction rate was important for enabling the synthesis of fine spherical polypyrrole particles.     

Decompositions of polyhedral products for shifted complexes

The conjecture of Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler (2010)  [3] on wedge decompositions of polyhedral products of shifted complexes is settled affirmatively. As a corollary, it is proved that the homotopy type of the complement of a coordinate subspace arrangement associated with a shifted complex, tensored with R^r${\mathbb{R}}^r$ for any r≥1$r\ge 1$, has the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres.     

Study of Strangeness Photoproduction on the Neutron in the Threshold Region

Photoproduction of the neutral kaon on the deuteron has been investigated at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University. We constructed the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer-2 for the detection of charged particles from the decay of the neutral kaon and the hyperon. We obtained a momentum distribution of K ⁰ with the inclusive measurement. It was consistent with the previous measurement. The total cross section of γ + d → K ⁰ + Λ + p was estimated from the measured integral cross section of γ + d → Λ + X. The total cross section with respect to the photon energy was compared with the theoretical calculations. It favored the Saclay-Lyon A model calculation with the ratio of the neutral to charged coupling constants of the axial-vector meson, K ₁, as ~ ?1.5. The energy dependence and the magnitude of the total cross section were similar to the total cross section of γ + p → K ⁺ Λ.     

Total synthesis of kehokorins A and B

The total synthesis of a dibenzofuran rhamnoside, kehokorin A, and its aglycone, kehokorin B, was achieved via a route including Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling followed by Ullmann ether synthesis to form a dibenzofuran, stepwise bromination at C7 of the dibenzofuran, a second Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling to install a 4-methoxyphenyl group at C7, and rhamnosylation.     

Non‐Thermoresponsive Decanano‐sized Domains in Thermoresponsive Hydrogel Microspheres Revealed by Temperature‐Controlled High‐Speed Atomic Force Microscopy

Despite the tremendous efforts devoted to the structural analysis of hydrogel microspheres (microgels), many details of their structures remain unclear. Reported in this study is that thermoresponsive poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (pNIPAm)‐based microgels exhibit not only the widely accepted core–shell structures, but also inhomogeneous decanano‐sized non‐thermoresponsive spherical domains within their dense cores, which was revealed by temperature‐controlled high‐speed atomic force microscopy (TC‐HS‐AFM). Based on a series of experiments, it is concluded that the non‐thermoresponsive domains are characteristic for pNIPAm microgels synthesized by precipitation polymerization, and plausible structures for microgels prepared by other polymerization techniques are proposed.     

Stereochemical Dichotomy in Two Competing Cascade Processes: Total Syntheses of Both Enantiomers of Spiroxin A

The first total synthesis of the marine antibiotic spiroxin A has been achieved for both enantiomeric forms. The discovery of two competing cascade processes triggered by two orthogonal stimuli, photo‐irradiation or acid/base treatment, enabled the divergent conversion of a single chiral, nonracemic bis‐quinone into both enantiomers of an advanced intermediate en route to both (?)‐ and (+)‐spiroxin A. The mechanism of the enantiodivergence is discussed.     

Storage and retrieval of a squeezed vacuum

Storage and retrieval of a squeezed vacuum was successfully demonstrated using electromagnetically induced transparency. The squeezed vacuum pulse having a temporal width of 930 ns was incident on the laser cooled 87Rb atoms with an intense control light in a coherent state. When the squeezed vacuum pulse was slowed and spatially compressed in the cold atoms, the control light was switched off. After 3 mus of storage, the control light was switched on again, and the squeezed vacuum was retrieved, as was confirmed using the time-domain homodyne method.
