In this study a series of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Polyethylene (PE) composites with different kinds and several concentrations of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. The morphology and degree of dispersion of the fillers in the polymer matrix at different length scales was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Both individual and agglomerated MWCNTs were evident but a good dispersion was observed for some of them. TGA measurements were performed on nanocomposites in order to understand if CNTs affect the stabilization mechanism during thermal and oxidative degradation. The analysis demonstrates that MWCNTs presence slightly delays thermal volatilisation (15-20 °C) without modification of thermal degradation mechanism. In contrast, thermal oxidative degradation in air is delayed up to about 100 °C dependently from MWCNTs concentration, in the range used here (0.1-2.0 wt%), and degree of dispersion. The stabilization is due to the formation of a thin protective layer of entangled MWCNTs kept together by carbon char generated on the surface of the nanocomposites as shown by SEM images taken on degradation residues.  相似文献

Currently, carbon nanotube (CNT) ‐based composites have been considered as microwave absorbers because of the fascinating properties of CNTs. In this work, multi‐walled CNTs (MWCNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) ‐based epoxy composites (i.e. MWCNT/EPr and GO‐MWCNT/EPr), with sample thickness of 2 mm, were prepared to study microwave absorbing properties in the frequency band of 8–18 GHz. Uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in the organic solvent and polymer matrix was achieved by preparation of GO. The test for electromagnetic parameters, i.e. complex permittivity and the permeability of the samples, was carried out with vector network analyzer (VNA) using reflection‐transmission waveguides. Results showed that GO‐MWCNT/EPr composites have better absorption capability than MWCNT/EPr composites. The improved reflection loss for the composites with 0.4 wt% and 0.6 wt% of GO (out of total filler loading 6 wt%) were ?14.32 dB and ?14.29 dB, respectively. The improvement in reflection loss and absorption bandwidth for GO‐MWCNTs composites suggested that MA features are synergistically effected by GO and MWCNTs. Further skin depth and shielding effectiveness terms are studied to observe overall mechanism of electromagnetic (EM) shielding which showed that multiple reflections also play a role in EM shielding. In order to reduce the pollutants of environment and electromagnetic waves, environment friendly polymer foams with outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding are imminently required. In this paper, a kind of electromagnetic shielding, biodegradable nanocomposite foam was fabricated by blending poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) followed by foaming with supercritical CO2. The crystallization temperature and melting temperature of PBS/CNTs nanocomposites with 4 wt % of CNTs increased remarkably by 6 °C and 3.1 °C compared with that of pure PBS and a double crystal melting peak of various PBS samples appeared in DSC curves. Increasing the CNT content from 0 to 4 wt % leads to an increase of approximately 3 orders of magnitude in storage modulus and nearly 9 orders of magnitude in enhancement of electrical properties. Furthermore, CNTs endowed PBS nanocomposite foam with adjustable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding property, giving a specific EMI shielding effectiveness of 28.5 dB cm3/g. This study provides a promising methodology for preparing biodegradable, lightweight PBS/CNTs foam with outstanding electromagnetic shielding properties.  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) content on rheological, mechanical, and EMI shielding properties in Ka band (26.5‐40 GHz) of poly (ether‐ketone) [PEK] prepared by melt compounding using twin screw extruder. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG‐SEM) studies were adopted to identify dispersion of nanotubes in PEK matrix. TEM and SEM images showed uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in PEK/MWCNT composites even at loading of 5 wt%. The rheological studies showed that the material experiences viscous (fluid) to elastic (solid) transition at 1 wt% loading beyond which nanotubes form continuous network throughout the matrix which in turn promotes reinforcement. Additionally, Van‐Gurp Palmen plot (phase angle vs complex modulus) and values of damping factor further confirm that the material undergoes viscous to elastic transition at 1 wt% loading. This reinforcement effect of nanotubes is reflected in enhanced mechanical properties (flexural strength and flexural modulus). Flexural strength and flexural modulus of PEK showed an increment of 17% upon incorporation of 5 wt% of MWCNTs. Total shielding effectiveness (SET) of −38 dB with very high shielding effectiveness due to absorption (SEA ~ −34 dB) was observed at 5 wt% loading of MWCNTs in PEK matrix in the frequency range of 26.5‐40 GHz (Ka band).  相似文献

An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) loaded with economical graphite-carbon black (CB) hybrid fillers was prepared via a green and facile methodology, i.e., high-speed mechanical mixing combined with hot compression thus avoiding the assistance of the intensive ultrasound dispersion in volatile organic solvents. In this composite, the graphite-CB hybrid fillers were selectively distributed in the interfacial regions of UHMWPE domains resulting a typical segregated structure. Thanks to the specific morphology of segregated conductive networks along with the synergetic effect of large-sized graphite flakes and small-sized CB nanoparticles, a low filler loading of 7.7 vol% (15 wt%) yielded the graphite-CB/UHMWPE composites with a satisfactory electrical conductivity of 33.9 S/m and a superior shielding effectiveness of 40.2 dB, manifesting the comparable value of the pricey large-aspect-ratio carbon nanofillers (e.g., carbon nanotubes and graphene nanosheets) based polymer composites. More interestingly, with the addition of 15 wt% graphite-CB (1/3, W/W) hybrid fillers, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite reached 25.3 MPa and 126%, respectively; with a remarkable increase of 58.1% and 2420% over the conventional segregated graphite/UHMWPE composites. The mechanical reinforcement could be attributed to the favor of the small-sized CB particles in the polymer molecular diffusion between UHMWPE domains which in turn provided a stronger interfacial adhesion. This work provides a facile, green and affordable strategy to obtain the polymer composites with high electrical conductivity, efficient EMI shielding, and balanced mechanical performance.  相似文献

A well characterised grade of mica was used to prepare nickel-coated mica fillers by an electroless coating technique. These fillers were incorporated into polypropylene (PP) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) using a Haake Internal mixer and a two-roll mill to produce conducting composites suitable for EMI shielding applications. Compounded polymers were fabricated into sheets of different thickness by compression moulding. The dependence of conductivity on sample thickness was studied and samples were tested for electrical resistivity, shielding efficiency, and thermal and mechanical properties. Reduced sample thickness during compression moulding decreased the electrical resistance of the polymer composites due to orientation and the formation of a good conducting network. Volume resistivity of PP composites was lower than for ABS composites with 50% Ni coating and equivalent filler weight fracions, showing that better conductivity could be achieved in a semi crystalline polymer than in an amorphous polymer. 0.6 weight fraction of 50 wt.% nickel coated mica in ABS showed a shielding efficiency of 16dB compared with 27.8dB in PP.  相似文献

In this article, hybrid fillers with different dimensions,namely,2-dimensional (2-D) expanded graphite (EG) and 1-dimensional (1-D) multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs),were added to aromatic nylon MXD6 matrix via melt-blending,to enhance its thermal and electrical conductivity as well as electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE).For ternary composites of MXD6/EG/CNTs,the electrical conductivity reaches up nine orders of magnitude higher compared to that of the neat MXD6 sample, which tumed the polymer-based composites from an insulator to a conductor, and the thermal conductivity has been enhanced by 477% compared with that of neat MXD6 sample.Meanwhile, the EMI SE of ternary composite reaches ~50 dB at the overall filler loading of only 18 wt%.This work can provide guidance for the preparation of polymer composites with excellent thermal and electrical conductivity via using hybrid filler.  相似文献

In this work, dodecylamine‐modified graphene nanosheets (DA‐GNSs) and γ‐aminopropyl‐triethoxysilane‐treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f‐MWCNTs) are employed to prepare cyanate ester (CE) thermally conductive composites. By adding 5 wt% DA‐GNSs or f‐MWCNTs to the CE resin, the thermal conductivities of the composites became 3.2 and 2.5 times that of the CE resin, respectively. To further improve the thermal conductivity, a mixture of the two fillers was utilized. A remarkable synergetic effect between the DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs on improving the thermal conductivity of CE resin composites was demonstrated. The composite containing 3 wt% hybrid filler exhibited a 185% increase in thermal conductivity compared with pure CE resin, whereas composites with individual DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs exhibited increases of 158 and 108%, respectively. Moreover, the composite with hybrid filler retained high electrical resistivity. Scanning electron microscopy images of the composite morphologies showed that the modified graphene nanosheets (GNSs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were uniformly dispersed in the CE matrix, and a number of junction points among MWCNTs and between MWCNTs and GNSs formed in the composites with hybrid fillers. Generally, we can conclude that these composites filled with hybrid fillers may be promising materials of further improving the thermal conductivity of CE composites. Highly conducting polyaniline (PANi)-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by in situ polymerization method for electromagnetic interference shielding. The thickness of the PANi coatings was controlled by the oxyfluorination treatment on the multi-walled carbon nanotubes and analyzed with both SEM and TEM. The oxyfluorination with higher oxygen content produced more hydrophilic functional groups on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The functional groups led to the well distribution and coating of PANi on the multi-walled carbon nanotubes resulting in the higher interfacial affinity between them. The uniform coating of PANi on MWCNTs by controlling the oxyfluorination conditions also played a crucial role in increasing the electrical conductivity of nanocomposites. The improved interfacial affinity resulted in the higher electromagnetic interference (EMI) SE of 47.03?dB based on the synergistic combination of the conductive components. The EMI shielding mechanism of PANi on MWCNTs suggested that EMI was mainly shielded by adsorption to avoid secondary EMI.  相似文献

In recent years, nanocarbon materials have attracted the interest of researchers due to their excellent properties. Nanocarbon-based flame retardant polymer composites have enhanced thermal stability and mechanical properties compared with traditional flame retardant composites. In this article, the unique structural features of nanocarbon-based materials and their use in flame retardant polymeric materials are initially introduced. Afterwards, the flame retardant mechanism of nanocarbon materials is described. The main discussions include material components such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene (in preparing resins), elastomers, plastics, foams, fabrics, and film–matrix materials. Furthermore, the flame retardant properties of carbon nanomaterials and their modified products are summarized. Carbon nanomaterials not only play the role of a flame retardant in composites, but also play an important role in many aspects such as mechanical reinforcement. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for future development of carbon nanomaterials in flame-retardant polymeric materials are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The effects of three types of electrically-inert fillers, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), talc and glass fiber (GF), on electrical resistivity, crystallization behavior and dynamic mechanical properties of poly(m-xylene adipamide) (MXD6)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are investigated. The electrical resistivity of MXD6/MWCNT composites is significantly reduced with the addition of inert fillers due to the volume-exclusion effect that leads to increased effective concentration of MWCNTs in MXD6 matrix and also due to improved MWCNT dispersion. The crystallization temperature of MXD6 increases with the addition of MWCNTs, indicating that MWCNTs can act as nucleating agent and induce crystallization of MXD6. The incorporation of inert fillers has no further effect on crystallization behavior of MXD6, but significantly improves the storage modulus of MXD6/MWCNT composite, demonstrating that CaCO3, talc and GF filled MXD6/MWCNT composites are very promising materials with not only improved electrical property but also excellent mechanical properties.  相似文献

In the current study, mechanical, thermal, thermo‐mechanical, and shape memory behavior of polyurethane/carbon nanotube nanocomposites were investigated, and also a modified Halpin‐Tsai equation was used for the first time to model shape recovery stress of these smart composites. Results showed that strength enhanced with the addition of MWCNTs and improved to a maximum value of 130% for PU‐1wt%CNTs. SEM micrographs were also used to prove the presence of agglomerates at higher CNT contents. By investigating thermogravimetry curves, it was concluded that the incorporation of carbon nanotubes transferred thermal degradation to a higher temperature. Storage modulus improved for nanocomposite samples which showed the reinforcing effect of CNTs on polyurethane. Memory behavior showed that recovery stress was increased for PU‐CNTs samples to a maximum value of 100% and not any harmful effect on shape recoveries observed. Finally, modified Halpin‐Tsai equation was obtained with the correction factor of K = exp(−1.79‐152Vf).  相似文献

Processing, electrical, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding behaviors of carbon nanotube (CNT)/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) nanocomposites were studied as function of CNT concentration. The nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing followed by compression molding. The selective and good level of dispersion of CNT in the styrene–acrylonitrile section of the ABS polymer was found to create conductive networks in the ABS matrix at a nanofiller loading of 0.75 wt %. At this nanofiller loading, the nanocomposite electrical conductivity was 10?5 S/m. This conductivity makes the nanocomposite suitable for electrostatic discharge protection applications. The EMI shielding effectiveness of the nanocomposites increased with the increase in nanofiller concentration. In the 100–1500 MHz frequency range, 1.1 mm thick plates made of ABS nanocomposite filled with 5 wt % CNT exhibit an EMI shielding effectiveness of 24 dB. At this shielding level, the nanocomposite is suitable for a broad range of applications. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2012  相似文献

In this study a series of melt mixed multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/Polyethylene composites with several carbon nanotube (CNTs) concentrations were investigated. A good dispersion of the nanotubes in the matrix was seen using scanning electron microscopy. Melt rheological measurements in dynamic mode were used to estimate the percolation state of the CNTs within the polymer and to provide information about the structure of the CNT/polymer composites. The effect of nanotubes on the non-isothermal crystallization behaviour of the nanocomposites was also studied by differential scanning calorimetry.  相似文献

Poly(urea urethane) (PUU) with a poly(dimethylsiloxane) soft segment was synthesized. Different types of conductive fillers—carbon nanotube (CNT), silver‐coated carbon nanotube (CNT–Ag), and nickel‐coated carbon nanotube (CNT–Ni)—were blended with PUU to form partially conductive polymer composites. The results showed that highly conductive metals could improve the conductivity of CNTs significantly. When the filler contents were 3, 4, and 5 parts per hundred parts of resin (phr), the PUU/CNT composites possessed electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (SE) at 8.5, 28.4, and 26.0 dB as the electromagnetic wave frequencies were 12.3, 16.2, and 15.9 GHz, respectively. SE of the composites that contained CNT–Ni and CNT–Ag increased with the filler loading. At the same modified‐CNT loading, the CNT–Ni‐filled composites had a higher SE than those filled with CNT–Ag. Tensile stresses ranged from 5.7 to 15.6 MPa (a 177.3% increase) when the CNT concentration reached 8 phr. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 345–358, 2005  相似文献

The effect of high molecular weight resin and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the crystallization, rheological and dynamic mechanical properties of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites was investigated. A synergetic effect of the high molecular weight resin and MWCNTs on the nucleation in the crystallization process of the matrix has been observed, and their contributions to the crystallization of the matrix are two-sided. The composites containing both the high molecular weight resin and MWCNTs have much higher crystallization peak temperatures but lower crystallinity, especially for samples with high MWCNT content. For the isothermal crystallization at relative high temperatures, higher Avrami exponent and shorter half-time of crystallization are observed for the composites containing both the high molecular weight resin and MWCNTs. The introduction of the high molecular weight resin not only reinforces the matrix, but also promotes the dispersion of MWCNTs. The reinforcement and synergetic nucleation effects of the high molecular weight resin and MWCNTs were also confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been identified as excellent nanoreinforcements for carbon fiber (CF)–reinforced polymers regarding a wide range of engineering applications. The outstanding properties of CNTs, such as their large surface area, high mechanical strength, and low manufacturing cost bring them to be distinguished nanoreinforcements for carbon fiber–reinforced polymers to form multifunctional and multiscale composites. Electrophoretic deposition of graphene oxide for CNTs onto the CF surface was conducted. The presence of graphene oxide–CNTs may effectively increase both the roughness and wettability of the CF surface, resulting in an improvement to the interfacial bonding strength between the CF and the polyimide (PI).  相似文献
