The behavior of mixed cationic/anionic and cationic/nonionic surfactants solutions have been studied by viscosimetry. The systems studied were sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and CTAB/Brij (polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, n = 10 and 23) in aqueous and sodium chloride solutions. The relative viscosity of single nonionic surfactant solutions is larger than that of SDS or CTAB solutions. It increases with the number of ethylene oxide groups. In the mixed systems, viscosity deviates from ideal behavior. The deviation results from electrostatic interactions. The surfactant mixture composition affects the self-assembled microstructure and rheology. A new mixed system that forms clear micellar solution above CMC was detected. In CTAB/Brij systems, the experimental data also deviate from ideal behavior due to mixed micelle formation and electroviscous effect. This effect is less pronounced than that of SDS/CTAB system and could be suppressed by adding an electrolyte (NaCl).  相似文献

In this article, the interfacial tension and interfacial dilational viscoelasticity of polystyrene sulfonate/surfactant adsorption films at the water–octane interface have been studied by spinning drop method and oscillating barriers method respectively. The experimental results show that different interfacial behaviors can be observed in different type of polyelectrolyte/surfactant systems. Polystyrene sulfonate sodium (PSS)/cationic surfactant hexadecanetrimethyl–ammonium bromide systems show the classical behavior of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/surfactant systems and can be explained well by electrostatic interaction. In the case of PSS/anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) systems, the coadsorption of PSS at interface through hydrophobic interaction with alkyl chain of SDS leads to the increase of interfacial tension and the decrease of dilational elasticity. For PSS/nonionic surfactant TX100 systems, PSS may form a sub-layer contiguous to the aqueous phase with partly hydrophobic polyoxyethylene chain of TX100, which has little effect on the TX100 adsorption film and interfacial tension.  相似文献

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and viscosity measurements have been employed to study the aggregation behavior of mixed micellar systems of anionic surfactant (dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt, AOT) with conventional nonionic surfactants such as Brij 35/TritonX-100/Tween 20/Tween 80/Myrj 45 and two triblock copolymers (L64 and F68). Critical micelle concentration (cmc) values have been determined for various micellar systems from CV measurements using 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) as an electroactive probe at 25 °C. Diffusion coefficient (D) has been evaluated from Randles–Sevcik equation which showed an overall decrease for most of the binary systems. The negative values of interaction parameters (β) obtained from regular solution theory suggest the synergistic behavior in all the binary systems except AOT + Tween 80 mixtures. The mixed systems of AOT with triblock copolymers showed stronger synergistic interactions than that of mixed systems of AOT with nonionic surfactants. A comparative evaluation of mixed systems of anionic surfactants AOT and sodium dodecyl sulfate with Myrj 45 and AOT + L64 and F68 has been made on the basis of different micellar parameters and structural properties of surfactants. Viscosity measurements also show similar type of interactions in the mixed micelles.  相似文献

The behavior of mixed nonionic/nonionic surfactant solutions, that is, p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenoxy poly(ethylene glycol)s Triton X-100 (TX100) and Triton X-165 (TX165) have been studied by surface tension and density measurements. The obtained results of the surface tension measurements were compared with those calculated from the relations derived by Joos, Miller, and co-workers. From the comparison, it appeared that by using these two approaches the adsorption behavior of TX100 and TX165 mixtures at different mole fractions can be predicted. The negative deviation from the linear relationship between the surface tension and composition of TX100 and TX165 mixtures in the concentration range corresponding to that of the saturated monolayer at the interface, the values of the parameters of molecular interaction, the activity coefficients, as well as the excess Gibbs energy of mixed monolayer formation calculated on the basis of Rosen and Motomura approaches proved that there is synergism in the reduction of the surface tension of aqueous solutions of TX100 and TX165 mixture when saturation of the monolayer is achieved. The negative parameters of intermolecular interaction in the mixed micelle and calculations based on MT theory of Blankschtein indicate that there is also synergism in the micelle formation for TX100 and TX165 mixture. It was also found that the values of the standard Gibbs energy of adsorption and micellization for the mixture of these two surfactants, which confirm the synergetic effect, can be predicted on the basis of the proposed equations, which include the values of the mole fraction of surfactant and excess Gibbs energy TX100 and TX165 in the monolayer and micelle.  相似文献

Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was used to remove cadmium ions from wastewater efficiently. In this study the nonionic surfactants polyoxyethyleneglycol dodecyl ether (Brij35) and polyoxyethylene octyl phenyl ether (TritonX-100) were for micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration to lower the dosage of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The surfactant critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the degree of micelle counterion binding were investigated. The effects of nonionic surfactant addition on the efficiency of cadmium removal, the residual quantities of surfactant, the permeate flux and the secondary membrane resistance were investigated. A comparison between MEUF with SDS and MEUF with mixed anionic–nonionic surfactants was undertaken. The results show that the addition of Brij35 or TritonX-100 reduced the CMC of SDS and the degree of counterion binding for the micelles. Due to these variations the Cd2+ rejection efficiency was at a maximum when the Brij35:SDS and the TritonX-100:SDS molar ratio was 0.5. The Cd2+ rejection efficiency in MEUF with SDS is higher than for MEUF with mixed surfactants when the total dose of surfactant is constant. The permeate flux of MEUF with SDS is higher than that for MEUF with mixed surfactants while the secondary resistance of MEUF with SDS is less than that of MEUF with mixed surfactants.  相似文献

Aggregational behaviour of micelles sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS and Triton X-100, TX-100 both in pure and mixed form) and micelle like aggregates such as polymer-surfactant system [polymer poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), PVP]-SDS have been studied by using fluorescence characteristics of a newly synthesized probe. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values determined at various surfactant compositions are lower than the ideal values indicating a synergistic effect. The value of the interaction parameter for the surfactant mixture has been determined which agrees well with the value calculated according to molecular thermodynamic theory. The total aggregation number of surfactant in mixed micelle shows a drastic variation in the SDS mole fraction range 0 < or = alpha1 < or = 0.3 and beyond the range it remains practically constant. Molar-based partition coefficients for the dye between the micellar and aqueous phase have been determined and a non-linear variation is obtained for the mixed micellar system. Variations of micro-polarity in the mixed micellar region have been investigated as a function of surfactant composition and results have been explained in terms of a suitable realistic model.  相似文献

Mixing behavior of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with cationic hydrotropes aniline hydrochloride (AH), o-toluidine hydrochloride (o-TH), and p-toluidine hydrochloride (p-TH) have been studied using conductivity at different temperatures. Critical micelle concentration for different mixing mole fractions, their ideal values, and different interaction parameters have been estimated. All the parameters show nonideal behavior with synergistic interactions. Thermodynamic parameters are also calculated for these systems.  相似文献

Critical micelle concentration (cmc) values have been determined for the mixed zwitterionic/anionic surfactant systems of N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (ZW3-12)/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), N-dodecyl-N,N-(dimethylammonio)butyrate (DDMAB)/SDS, N-octyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (ZW3-08)/sodium octyl sulfate (SOS), and the zwitterionic/cationic systems of ZW3-12/dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), DDMAB/DTAB. Conductivity studies and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were the methods employed for cmc determinations. The degree of nonideality of the interaction in the micelle (beta(m)), for each system, was determined according to Rubingh's nonideal solution theory. Evidence was found for the existence of strong interactions between zwitterionic and anionic surfactants in each of the zwitterionic/anionic systems. The ZW3-08/SOS and DDMAB/SDS systems behaved synergistically at all mole fractions studied while the ZW3-12/SDS system exhibited synergistic behavior above mole fractions of 0.30. Greater negative deviations from ideal behavior were demonstrated in the DDMAB/SDS system than in the other two zwitterionic/anionic systems. The zwitterionic/cationic systems of ZW3-12/DTAB and ZW3-08/OTAB displayed only slight deviations from ideal behavior, therefore indicating near ideal mixing.  相似文献

To study the influence of the chemical nature of headgroups and the type of counterion on the process of micellization in mixed surfactant systems, the cmc's of several binary mixtures of surfactants with the same length of hydrocarbon tail but with different headgroups have been determined as a function of the monomer composition using surface tension measurements. Based on these results, the interaction parameter between the surfactant species in mixed micelles has been determined using the pseudophase separation model. Experiments were carried out with (a) the nonionic/anionic C(12)E(6)/SDS ((hexa(ethyleneglycol) mono-n-dodecyl ether)/(sodium dodecyl sulfate)), (b) amphoteric/anionic DDAO/SDS ((dodecyldimethylamine oxide)/(sodium dodecyl sulfate)), and (c) amphoteric/nonionic C(12)E(6)/DDAO mixed surfactant systems. In the case of the mixed surfactant systems containing DDAO, experiments were carried out at pH 2 and pH 8 where the surfactant was in the cationic and nonionic form, respectively. It was shown that the mixtures of the nonionic surfactants with different kinds of headgroups exhibit almost ideal behavior, whereas for the nonionic/ionic surfactant mixtures, significant deviations from ideal behavior (attractive interactions) have been found, suggesting binding between the head groups. Molecular orbital calculations confirmed the existence of the strong specific interaction between (1) SDS and nonionic and cationic forms of DDAO and between (2) C(12)E(6) and the cationic form of DDAO. In the case for the C(12)E(6)/SDS system, an alternative mechanism for the stabilization of mixed micelles was suggested, which involved the lowering in the free energy of the hydration layer. The interaction in two mixtures of a nonionic surfactant Triton-X-100 (TX-100) and different ionic surfactants was investigated. The two mixtures were TX-100/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and TX-100/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at molar fraction of TX-100, αTX-100 = 0.6. The surface properties of the surfactants, critical micelle concentration (CMC), effectiveness of surface tension reduction (γCMC), maximum surface excess concentration (Γmax), and minimum area per molecule at the air/solution interface (A min) were determined for both individual surfactants and their mixtures. The significant deviations from ideal behavior (attractive interactions) of the nonionic/ionic surfactant mixtures were also determined. Mixtures of both TX-100/SDS and TX-100/CTAB exhibited synergism in surface tension reduction efficiency and mixed micelle formation, but neither exhibited synergism in surface tension reduction effectiveness.  相似文献

The influence of a surfactant over water on the polymorphism and crystal size of calcium carbonate produced by reaction crystallization in microemulsion systems was investigated in a mixing tank reactor. The crystallization was induced by the reaction between two aqueous micelle solutions (Na2CO3-CaCl2) stabilized by anionic surfactants, SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) or AOT (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate). With increasing surfactant ratio to water, the water-in-oil microemulsion was stably developed and the morphology of the calcium carbonate crystallized in the micelles sharply transformed from calcite to vaterite. The influence of SDS on the polymorphism and crystal size of calcium carbonate was much clearer than that of AOT. In addition, with AOT, certain step changes in the morphology and crystal size occurred around a surfactant ratio to water (R=[H2O]/[surfactant]) of 15 due to a two-phase separation of the microemulsion.  相似文献

The interaction of various flavonoids (compounds having C6-C3-C6 configuration) with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) an anionic surfactant was studied through absorption spectroscopy as a function of the concentration of surfactant above and below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the surfactant. A mechanism was proposed for the interaction between these flavonoids and anionic surfactants. The approximate number of additive molecules (flavonoids) incorporated per micelle was estimated at a particular concentration of SDS. Incorporation of additive in micelles shifts the UV absorption bands towards higher wavelengths of different magnitude. The spectral shift also depends upon the nature of the surfactant head group. The absorption spectra of the flavonoids in aqueous solution and in methanol are also reported.  相似文献

To study the influence of the head group in the properties of the mixed monolayers adsorbed at the air-water interface, the surface tension and surface potential of binary mixtures of surfactant have been determined as a function of the surfactant composition. Experiments were carried out with anionic-zwitterionic sodium dodecyl sulfate and dodecyl dimethyl ammoniopropane sulfonate (SDS/DDPS), and cationic-zwitterionic dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide and dodecyl dimethyl ammoniopropane sulfonate (DTAB/DDPS), and dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide and tetradecyl dimethyl ammoniopropane sulfonate (DTAB/TDPS). It was shown that mixed monolayers of cationic-zwitterionic surfactant exhibit small negative deviations of ideal behavior, whereas for SDS/DDPS monolayers show strong negative deviation from the ideality. Deviations of ideal behavior are interpreted by regular solution theory. The surface potential values agree very well with the concentration of the ionic component at the interface. The dynamic surface tension values show that the adsorption kinetics on the interface is a diffusion-controlled process. In monolayers with significant deviation of the ideal behavior, anionic-zwitterionic, there is some evidence of intermolecular attractions after diffusion of both surfactants at the interface.  相似文献

Mixtures of the anionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecanoate (SDoD) were investigated regarding their ability to bind to a hydrophilic nonionic polymer, polyethylene oxide (PEO). By electrical conductivity measurements, the parameters with respect to the onsets of surfactant aggregation were determined in the presence of 0.06 M PEO (critical aggregation concentration) and in its absence (critical micelle concentration). It was found that both plots of these parameters for the multicomponent mixtures against molar fraction of SDoD showed an ideal mixing behavior. The same technique was used to estimate the degree of ionization as a fundamental parameter relating to the interfacial composition of mixed aggregates. In addition, in order to monitor changes in polymer-surfactant structures, we used steady-state quenching fluorescence measurements to characterize the sizes of PEO-SDS/SDoD complexes at different compositions of the complex mixture. Classical physical method has been applied in the present study of interaction between water soluble polymer with anionic dimeric and conventional anionic surfactants. Micellization activity of carboxylate-based anionic dimeric (CAD) as well as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants in the presence of nonionic polymer, that is, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), has been studied through conductometric and surface tensiometric measurements. From these methods the critical aggregation concentrations (CACs), critical micelle concentrations (CMCs), and the effective degree of counterion binding (β) were determined. For the evaluation of behavior of CAD toward the PVP various thermodynamic properties viz. standard Gibbs energy of micellization, standard enthalpy, and entropy of micellization of CAD/PVP mixed system have also been estimated and discussed. The results exhibit that anionic dimeric surfactant interacts strongly with PVP as compared to conventional surfactant.  相似文献

The effects of the addition of the polyelectrolyte, poly(ethyleneimine), PEI, on the adsorption of the mixed surfactants of sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS, and dodecyldimethylaminoacetate, dodecyl betaine, at the air-water interface have been investigated using neutron reflectivity and surface tension. In the absence of PEI the SDS and dodecyl betaine surfactants strongly interact and exhibit synergistic adsorption at the air-water interface. The addition of PEI, at pH 7 and 10, results in a significant modification of the surface partitioning of the SDS/dodecyl betaine mixture. The strong surface interaction at high pH (pH 7 and 10) between the PEI and SDS dominates the surface behavior. For solution compositions in the range 20/80-80/20 mol ratio dodecyl betaine/SDS at pH 7 the surface composition is strongly biased towards the SDS. At pH 10 a similar behavior is observed for a solution composition of 50/50 mol ratio dodecyl betaine/SDS. This strong partitioning in favor of the SDS at high pH is attributed to the strong ion-dipole attraction between the SDS sulfate and the PEI imine groups. At pH 3, where the electrostatic interactions between the surfactant and the PEI are dominant, the dodecyl betaine more effectively competes with the SDS for the interface, and the surface composition is much closer to the solution composition.  相似文献

The physicochemical properties, such as critical micelle concentration (cmc), surface tension at cmc (γ(cmc)), and surface activity parameters of the mixtures of a new amino acid-based zwitterionic surfactant, N-(n-dodecyl-2-aminoethanoyl)-glycine (C(12)Gly) and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at different molar fractions, X(1) (= [C(12)Gly]/([C(12)Gly] + [SDS])) of C(12)Gly were studied. A synergistic interaction was observed between the surfactants in mixtures of different X(1). The self-organization of the mixtures at different molar fractions, concentrations, and pH was investigated. Fluorescence depolarization studies in combination with dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopic and confocal fluorescence microscopic images suggested the formation of bilayer vesicles in dilute solutions of SDS rich mixtures with X(1) ≤ 0.17 in the pH range 7.0 to 9.0. However, the electronic micrographs showed structures with fingerprint-like texture in moderately dilute to concentrated C(12)Gly/SDS mixture at X(1) = 0.50. The vesicles were observed to transform into small micelles upon lowering the solution pH and upon increase of total surfactant concentration in mixtures with X(1) ≤ 0.17. However, decrease of SDS content transformed vesicles into wormlike micelles. The structural transitions were correlated with bulk viscosity of the binary mixtures.  相似文献
