Calculations of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses are reported for the recirculating flow established in the wake of two‐dimensional polynomial‐shaped obstacles that are symmetrical about a vertical axis and mounted in the water channel downstream of a fully developed channel flow for Re=6×104. The study involves calculations of mean and fluctuating flow properties in the streamwise and spanwise directions and include comparisons with experimental data [Almeida GP, Durão DFG, Heitor MV. Wake flows behind two‐dimensional model hills. Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science 1993; 7: 87–101] for flow around a single obstacle with data resulting from the interaction of consecutive obstacles, using two versions of the low‐Reynolds number differential second‐moment (DSM) closure model. The results include analysis of the turbulent stresses in local flow co‐ordinates and reveal flow structure qualitatively similar to that found in other turbulent flows with a reattachment zone. It is found that the standard isotropization of production model (IPM), based on that proposed by Gibson and Launder [Ground effects on pressure fluctuations in the atmospheric boundary layer. Journal of Fluid Mechanics 1978; 86(3): 191–511], with the incorporation of the wall reflection model of Craft and Launder [New wall‐reflection model applied to the turbulent impinging jet. AIAA Journal 1992; 32(12): 2970–2972] predicts the mean velocities quite well, but underestimates the size of the recirculation region and turbulent quantities in the shear layer. These inadequacies are circumvented by adopting a new cubic Reynolds stress closure scheme based on that more recently developed by Craft and Launder [A Reynolds stress closure designed for complex geometries. International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow 1996; 17: 245–254] which satisfies the two component limit (TCL) of turbulence. In this model the geometry‐specific quantities, such as the wall‐normal vector or wall distance, are replaced by invariant dimensionless gradient indicators. Also, the model captures the diverse behaviour of the different components of the stress dissipation, εij, near the wall and uses a novel decomposition for the fluctuating pressure terms. M = 2.25 shock‐wave/turbulent‐boundary‐layer interactions over a compression ramp for several angles (8, 13 and 18°) at Reynolds‐number Re=7 × 103 were simulated with three low‐Reynolds second‐moment closures and a linear low‐Reynolds standard k–ε model. A detailed assessment of the turbulence closures by comparison with both mean‐flow and turbulent experimental quantities is presented. The Reynolds‐stress model which is wall‐topology free and which uses an optimized redistribution closure, is in good agreement with experimental data both for wall‐pressure and mean‐velocity profiles. Detailed analysis of three components of the Reynolds‐stress tensor (comparison with measurements and transport‐equation budgets) provides a critical evaluation of full Reynolds‐stress models for the separated supersonic compression ramp. The discrepancy observed in the shock‐wave foot region, between computations and measurements for the Reynolds‐stresses profiles, could be explained by considering the experimental shock‐wave oscillation and directions for future modelling work are indicated. Two-equation turbulence models for velocity and temperature (scalar) fields are developed to calculate wall shear flows under various flow conditions and related turbulent heat transfer under various wall thermal conditions. In the present models, we make the modified dissipation rates of both turbulent energy and temperature variance zero at a wall, though the wall limiting behavior of velocity and temperature fluctuations is reproduced exactly. Thus, the models assure computational expediency and convergence. Also, the present k- model is construted using a new type of expression for the Reynolds stress proposed by Abe et al. [Trans. JSME B 61 (1995) 1714–1721], whose essential feature lies in introducing the explicit algebraic stress model concept into the nonlinear k- formulation, and the present two-equation heat transfer model is constructed to properly take into account the effects of wall thermal conditions on the eddy diffusivity for heat. The models are tested with five typical velocity fields and four typical thermal fields. Agreement with experiment and direct simulation data is quite satisfactory.  相似文献

A thermo-mechanical turbulence model is developed and used for predicting heat transfer in a gas–solid flow through a vertical pipe with constant wall heat flux. The new four-way interaction model makes use of the thermal kθ–τθ equations, in addition to the hydrodynamic k–τ transport, and accounts for the particle–particle and particle–wall collisions through a Eulerian/Lagrangian formulation. The simulation results indicate that the level of thermal turbulence intensity and the heat transfer are strongly affected by the particle collisions. Inter-particle collisions attenuate the thermal turbulence intensity near the wall but somewhat amplify the temperature fluctuations in the pipe core region. The hydrodynamic-to-thermal times-scale ratio and the turbulent Prandtl number in the region near the wall increase due to the inter-particle collisions. The results also show that the use of a constant or the single-phase gas turbulent Prandtl number produces error in the thermal eddy diffusivity and thermal turbulent intensity fields. Simulation results also indicate that the inter-particle contact heat conduction during collision has no significant effect in the range of Reynolds number and particle diameter studied.  相似文献

A two-dimensional oscillating flow analysis was conducted simulating the gas flow inside Stirling engine heat exchangers. Both laminar and turbulent oscillating pipe flow were investigated numerically for Remax = 1,920 (Va = 80), 10,800 (Va = 272), 19,300 (Va = 272), and 60,800 (Va = 126). The results are here compared with experimental results of previous investigators. Predictions of the flow regime on present oscillating flow conditions are also checked by comparing velocity amplitudes and phase difference with those from laminar theory and quasi-steady profile. A high Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model was used for turbulent oscillating pipe flow. Finally, the performance of the k-ε model was evaluated to explore the applicability of quasi-steady turbulent models to unsteady oscillating flow analysis.  相似文献

This investigation concerns numerical calculation of turbulent forced convective heat transfer and fluid flow in straight ducts using the RNG (Re-Normalized Group) turbulence method.

A computational method has been developed to predict the turbulent Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in ducts with different turbulence models. The turbulent Reynolds stresses and other turbulent flow quantities are predicted with the RNG κ?ε model and the RNG non-linear κ-ε model of Speziale. The turbulent heat fluxes are modeled by the simple eddy diffusivity (SED) concept, GGDH and WET methods. Two wall functions are used, one for the velocity field and one for the temperature field. All the models arc implemented for an arbitrary three dimensional duct.

Fully developed condition is achieved by imposing cyclic boundary conditions in the main flow direction. The numerical approach is based on the finite volume technique with a non-staggered grid arrangement. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by using the SIMPLEC-algorithm. The convective terms are treated by the QUICK, scheme while the diffusive terms are handled by the central-difference scheme. The hybrid scheme is used for solving the κ and ε equations.

The overall comparison between the models is presented in terms of friction factor and Nusselt number. The secondary flow generation is also of major concern.  相似文献

A generalized treatment for the wall boundary conditions relating to turbulent flows is developed that blends the integration to a solid wall with wall functions. The blending function ensures a smooth transition between the viscous and turbulent regions. An improved low Reynolds number k?ε model is coupled with the proposed compound wall treatment to determine the turbulence field. The eddy viscosity formulation maintains the positivity of normal Reynolds stresses and Schwarz' inequality for turbulent shear stresses. The model coefficients/functions preserve the anisotropic characteristics of turbulence. Computations with fine and coarse meshes of a few flow cases yield appreciably good agreement with the direct numerical simulation and experimental data. The method is recommended for computing the complex flows where computational grids cannot satisfy a priori the prerequisites of viscous/turbulence regions. Invariant analysis of the Reynolds stress tensor anisotropy can give an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of the turbulent structure of a turbulent flow. Lumley's triangle has proven to be a powerful representation of the invariant analysis of the second-order statistics collection provided by the Reynolds stress tensor. In the present work the spectral element code Nek5000 has been used to investigate the turbulent structure of the flow across a pressurized water reactor spacer grid with split type mixing vanes. Wall-resolved large eddy simulation of the flow in a prototypical rod bundle geometry at Re = 14,000 and P/D = 1.32 are performed and validated against particle image velocimetry data. The results are then used to perform an in-depth invariant analysis. The results show a reorganization of the Reynolds stresses components in the downstream region of the spacer grid. The mixing vanes orientation produces a symmetric behavior between sub-channels. The turbulent structure in the fully developed region has the typical behavior of fully-developed channel flow turbulence. When averaging the state across regions of the sub-channels, we observed a transition from disk-like turbulence in the mixing vanes region to rod-like turbulence in the fully developed region.  相似文献

Prediction of the characteristics of turbulent flows with strong streamline curvature, such as flows in turbomachines, curved channel flows, flows around airfoils and buildings, is of great importance in engineering applications and poses a very practical challenge for turbulence modeling. In this paper, we analyze qualitatively the curvature effects on the structure of turbulence and conduct numerical simulations of a turbulent Uduct flow with a number of turbulence models in order to assess their overall performance. The models evaluated in this work are some typical linear eddy viscosity turbulence models, nonlinear eddy viscosity turbulence models (NLEVM) (quadratic and cubic), a quadratic explicit algebraic stress model (EASM) and a Reynolds stress model (RSM) developed based on the second-moment closure. Our numerical results show that a cubic NLEVM that performs considerably well in other benchmark turbulent flows, such as the Craft, Launder and Suga model and the Huang and Ma model, is able to capture the major features of the highly curved turbulent U-duct flow, including the damping of turbulence near the convex wall, the enhancement of turbulence near the concave wall, and the subsequent turbulent flow separation. The predictions of the cubic models are quite close to that of the RSM, in relatively good agreement with the experimental data, which suggests that these models may be employed to simulate the turbulent curved flows in engineering applications.  相似文献

Large‐eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes simulation (RANS) with different turbulence models (including the standard k?ε, the standard k?ω, the shear stress transport k?ω (SST k?ω), and Spalart–Allmaras (S–A) turbulence models) have been employed to compute the turbulent flow of a two‐dimensional turbulent boundary layer over an unswept bump. The predictions of the simulations were compared with available experimental measurements in the literature. The comparisons of the LES and the SST k?ω model including the mean flow and turbulence stresses are in satisfied agreements with the available measurements. Although the flow experiences a strong adverse pressure gradient along the rear surface, the boundary layer is unique in that intermittent detachment occurring near the wall. The numerical results indicate that the boundary layer is not followed by mean‐flow separation or incipient separation as shown from the numerical results. The resolved turbulent shear stress is in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data, though the computational result of LES shows that its peak is overpredicted near the trailing edge of the bump, while the other used turbulence models, except the standard k?ε, underpredicts it. Analysis of the numerical results from LES confirms the experimental data, in which the existence of internal layers over the bump surface upstream of the summit and along the downstream flat plate. It also demonstrates that the quasi‐step increase in skin friction is due to perturbations in pressure gradient. The surface curvature enhances the near‐wall shear production of turbulent stresses, and is responsible for the formation of the internal layers. The aim of the present work is to examine the response and prediction capability of LES with the dynamic eddy viscosity model as a sub‐grid scale to the complex turbulence structure with the presence of streamline curvature generated by a bumpy surface. Aiming to reduce the computational costs with focus on the mean behavior of the non‐equilibrium turbulent boundary layer of flow over the bump surface, the present investigation also explains the best capability of one of the used RANS turbulence models to capture the driving mechanism for the surprisingly rapid return to equilibrium over the trailing flat plate found in the measurements. Shock waves drastically alter the nature of Reynolds stresses in a turbulent flow, and conventional turbulence models cannot reproduce this effect. In the present study, we employ explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model (EARSM) to predict the Reynolds stress anisotropy generated by a shockwave. The model by Wallin and Johansson (2000) is used as the baseline model. It is found to over-predict the post-shock Reynolds stresses in canonical shock turbulence interaction. The budget of the transport equation of Reynolds stresses computed using linear interaction analysis shows that the unsteady shock distortion mechanism and the pressure–velocity correlations are important. We propose improvement to the baseline model using linear interaction analysis results and redistribute the turbulent kinetic energy between the principle Reynolds stresses. The new model matches DNS data for the amplification of Reynolds stresses across the shock and their post-shock evolution, for a range of Mach numbers. It is applied to oblique shock/boundary-layer interaction at Mach 5. Significant improvements are observed in predicting surface pressure and skin friction coefficient, with respect to experimental measurements.  相似文献

Gas-particle two-phase turbulent flow in a vertical duct   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Two-phase gas-phase turbulent flows at various loadings between the two vertical parallel plates are analyzed. A thermodynamically consistent turbulent two-phase flow model that accounts for the phase fluctuation energy transport and interaction is used. The governing equation of the gas-phase is upgraded to a two-equation low Reynolds number turbulence closure model that can be integrated directly to the wall. A no-slip boundary condition for the gas-phase and slip-boundary condition for the particulate phase are used. The computational model is first applied to dilute gas-particle turbulent flow between two parallel vertical walls. The predicted mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles are compared with the experimental data of Tsuji et al. (1984) for vertical pipe flows, and good agreement is observed. Examples of additional flow properties such as the phasic fluctuation energy, phasic fluctuation energy production and dissipation, as well as interaction momentum and energy supply terms are also presented and discussed.

Applications to the relatively dense gas-particle turbulent flows in a vertical channel are also studied. The model predictions are compared with the experimental data of Miller & Gidaspow and reasonable agreement is observed. It is shown that flow behavior is strongly affected by the phasic fluctuation energy, and the momentum and energy transfer between the particulate and the fluid constituents.  相似文献

An experimental study of a fully developed turbulent channel flow and an adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent channel flow over smooth and rough walls has been performed using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The rough walls comprised two-dimensional square ribs of nominal height, k = 3 mm and pitch, p = 2k, 4k and 8k. It was observed that rib roughness enhanced the drag characteristics, and the degree of enhancement increased with increasing pitch. Similarly, rib roughness significantly increased the level of turbulence production, Reynolds stresses and wall-normal transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress well beyond the roughness sublayer. On the contrary, the distributions of the eddy viscosity, mixing length and streamwise transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were reduced by wall roughness, especially in the outer layer. Adverse pressure gradient produced a further reduction in the mean velocity (in comparison to the results obtained in the parallel section) but increased the wall-normal extent across which the mean flow above the ribs is spatially inhomogeneous in the streamwise direction. APG also reinforced wall roughness in augmenting the equivalent sand grain roughness height. The combination of wall roughness and APG significantly increased turbulence production and Reynolds stresses except in the immediate vicinity of the rough walls. The transport velocities of the turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were also augmented by APG across most part of the rough-wall boundary layer. Further, APG enhanced the distributions of the eddy viscosity across most of the boundary layer but reduced the mixing length outside the roughness sublayer.  相似文献

Turbulent characteristics of shear-thinning fluids in recirculating flows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
 A miniaturised fibre optic Laser-Doppler anemometer was used to carry out a detailed hydrodynamic investigation of the flow downstream of a sudden expansion with 0.1–0.2% by weight shear-thinning aqueous solutions of xanthan gum. Upstream of the sudden expansion the pipe flow was fully-developed and the xanthan gum solutions exhibited drag reduction with corresponding lower radial and tangential normal Reynolds stresses, but higher axial Reynolds stress near the wall and a flatter axial mean velocity profile in comparison with Newtonian flow. The recirculation bubble length was reduced by more than 20% relative to the high Reynolds number Newtonian flow, and this was attributed to the occurrence further upstream of high turbulence for the non-Newtonian solutions, because of advection of turbulence and earlier high turbulence production in the shear layer. Comparisons with the measurements of Escudier and Smith (1999) with similar fluids emphasized the dominating role of inlet turbulence. The present downstream turbulence field was less anisotropic, and had lower maximum axial Reynolds stresses (by 16%) but higher radial turbulence (20%) than theirs. A realistic five-layered helical coil tube bundle in turbulent cross flow is numerically investigated using large eddy simulation (LES). The geometry of the helical coil tube bundle, which is a 1/45 sector of a helical coil steam generator design for an advanced small modular reactor, has three counterclockwise helical layers and two clockwise helical layers stacked in alternating fashion in the radial direction. A Reynolds number of 21,800 is considered based on the mean gap velocity, diameter of the coil tube, and kinematic viscosity of the working fluid. The WALE sub-grid scale model is employed for LES to resolve scale smaller than the grid size. Additionally, LES for an ideal five-layered coil bundle model without a helical geometry is utilized to generate comparison data. Instantaneous flow fields are explored by analyzing velocity magnitude, vorticity, static pressure, and vortical structures. The detachments of vortical structures from the coil tube surface are observed by visualizing vortical structures and wall shear stress distributions simultaneously. Various turbulent statistics at multiple monitoring locations are presented with an emphasis on feature difference between realistic and ideal coil bundle models. The results of spectral analyses, including the power spectral density and continuous wavelet transform analyses, are addressed from the perspective of flow-induced vibration. The key feature of this paper is the discussion of three-dimensional effects based on the helical geometry of a coil bundle.  相似文献

We investigate the turbulence modeling of second moment closure used both in RANS and PITM methodologies from a fundamental point of view and its capacity to predict the flow in a low turbulence wind tunnel of small axisymmetric contraction designed by Uberoi and Wallis. This flow presents a complex phenomenon in physics of fluid turbulence. The anisotropy ratio of the turbulent stresses τ 11/τ 22 initially close to 1.4 returns to unity through the contraction, but surprisingly, this ratio gradually increases to its pre-contraction value in the uniform section downstream the contraction. This point constitutes the interesting paradox of the Uberoi and Wallis experiment. We perform numerical simulations of the turbulent flow in this wind tunnel using both a Reynolds stress model developed in RANS modeling and a subfilter scale stress model derived from the partially integrated transport modeling method. With the aim of reproducing the experimental grid turbulence resulting from the effects of the square-mesh biplane grid on the uniform wind tunnel stream, we develop a new analytical spectral method of generation of pseudo-random velocity fields in a cubic box. These velocity fields are then introduced in the channel using a matching numerical technique. Both RANS and PITM simulations are performed on several meshes to study the effects of the contraction on the mean velocity and turbulence. As a result, it is found that the RANS computation using the Reynolds stress model fails to reproduce the increase of anisotropy in the centerline of the channel after passing the contraction. In the contrary, the PITM simulation predicts fairly well this turbulent flow according to the experimental data, and especially, the “return to anisotropy” in the straight section of the channel downstream the contraction. This work shows that the PITM method used in conjunction with an analytical synthetic turbulence generation as inflow is well suited for simulating this flow, while allowing a drastic reduction of the computational resources.  相似文献

Particle-turbulence interaction in a boundary layer   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
Particle-turbulence interaction in wall turbulent flows has been studied. A series of experiments varying particle size, particle density, particle loading and flow Re has been conducted. The results show that the larger polystyrene particles (1100 μm) cause an increase in the number of wall ejections, giving rise to an increase in the measured values of the turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses. On the other hand, the smaller polystyrene particles (120 μm) bring about a decrease in the number of wall ejections, causing a decrease in the measured intensities and Reynolds stresses. These effects are enhanced as the particle loading is increased. It was also found that the heavier glass particles (88 μm) do not bring about any significant modulation of turbulence. In addition, measurements of the burst frequency and the mean streak-spacing show no significant change with increase in particle loading. Based on these observations, a mechanism of particle transport in wall turbulent flows has been proposed, in which the particles are transported (depending on their size, density and flow Re) by the bursting events of the wall regions.  相似文献

In this article we investigate turbulent flow of air through compound rectangular channels to experimentally investigate the turbulence phenomena in compound channels. Detailed experimental data of axial mean velocity, wall shear stresses, five of six Reynolds stresses, auto- and cross-spectral densities, and two-point space correlations were measured by hot-wire anemometry in 18 geometrical configurations.

The symmetry of the present flow appears to be better than that of previous measurements and the range of measurments is more extensive. The most interesting result is the existence of a quasi-periodic large-scale turbulence structure in most of the geometries investigated. This structure is stationary and independent of the axial position in the channel. It exists in any longitudinal slot or groove in a wall or a connecting gap between two flow channels, provided its depth is more than approximately twice its width. The frequency of this flow oscillation is determined by the geometry of the slot and is linearly dependent on the bulk velocity.  相似文献
