The spin current in a parabolically confined semiconductor heterojunction quantum wire with Dresselhaus spin--orbit coupling is theoretically studied by using the perturbation method. The formulae of the elements for linear and angular spin current densities are derived by using the recent definition for spin current based on spin continuity equation. It is found that the spin current in this Dresselhaus spin--orbit coupling quantum wire is antisymmetrical, which is different from that in Rashba model due to the difference in symmetry between these two models. Some numerical examples for the result are also demonstrated and discussed.

The frequency in middle of magnon energy band in a five-layer ferromagnetic superlattice is studied by using the linear spin-wave approach and Green's function technique. It is found that four energy gaps and corresponding four frequencie in middle of energy gaps exist in the magnon band along Kx direction perpendicular to the superlattice plane. The spin quantum numbersand the interlayer exchange couplings all affect the four frequencies in middle of the energy gaps. When all interlayer exchange couplings are same, the effect of spin quantum numbers on the frequency ωg1 in middle of the energy gap Δω12 is complicated, and the frequency ωg1 depends on the match of spin quantum numbers in each layer. Meanwhile, the frequencies ωg2, ωg3, and ωg4 in middle of other energy gaps increase monotonously with increasing spin quantum numbers. When the spin quantum numbersin each layer are same, the frequencies ωg1, ωg2, ωg3, and ωg4 all increasemonotonously with increasing interlayer exchange couplings.

We investigate theoretically charge and spin pumps based on a linear configuration of quantum dots (quantum wire) which are disturbed by an external time-dependent perturbation. This perturbation forms an impulse which moves as a train pulse through the wire. It is found that the charge pumped through the system depends non-monotonically on the wire length, N. In the presence of the Zeeman splitting pure spin current flowing through the wire can be generated in the absence of charge current. Moreover, we observe electron pumping in a direction which does not coincide with the propagation direction of the pulse and the spin pumping direction (spin-charge separation). Additionally, on-site spin-flip processes significantly influence electron transport through the system and can also reverse the charge current direction.

We use numerical simulations to investigate the spin Hall effect in quantum wires in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that the intrinsic spin Hall effect is highly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the wire, and that the nature of this anisotropy depends strongly on the electron density and the relative strengths of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. In particular, at low densities, when only one subband of the quantum wire is occupied, the spin Hall effect is strongest for electron momentum along the [N110] axis, which is the opposite of what is expected for the purely 2D case. In addition, when more than one subband is occupied, the strength and anisotropy of the spin Hall effect can vary greatly over relatively small changes in electron density, which makes it difficult to predict which wire orientation will maximize the strength of the spin Hall effect. These results help to illuminate the role of quantum confinement in spin-orbit-coupled systems, and can serve as a guide for future experimental work on the use of quantum wires for spin-Hall-based spintronic applications.

We investigate the decay of initial correlations in a spin system where each spin relaxes independently by an intramolecular mechanism. The equation of motion for the spin density matrix is assumed to be the Redfield equation, which is of the form of a quantum mechanical master equation. Our analysis of this problem is based on the techniques of Shuler, Oppenheim, and coworkers, who have studied the decay of correlations in systems which can be described by classical stochastic master equations. We find that the off-diagonal elements of the reduced spin density matrices approach their equilibrium values faster than the diagonal elements. The Ursell functions, which are a measure of the correlations in the system, decay to their zero equilibrium values faster than the spin density matrix except for the furthest off-diagonal elements. Far off-diagonal matrix elements of the spin density matrix approach equilibrium at the same rate as the Ursell functions, which is the important difference between the quantum mechanical model studied here and the classical models studied earlier.Supported in part by the National Science Foundation.

We study the effect of Coulomb interactions on the conductance of a single-mode quantum wire connecting two bulk leads. When the density of electrons in the wire is very low, they arrange in a finite-length Wigner crystal. In this regime the electron spins form an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with an exponentially small coupling J. An electric current in the wire perturbs the spin chain and gives rise to a temperature-dependent contribution of the spin subsystem to the resistance. At low temperature TJ the spin effect reduces the conductance to e2/h.

We investigate the theoretically combined effect of spin-orbit interactions and Coulomb interaction on the ground state and transport property of a quantum wire oriented along different crystallographic directions in the (110) plane. We find that the electron’s ground state exhibits phase transition among spin density wave, charge density wave, singlet superconductivity and metamagnetism, which can be controlled by changing the crystallographic orientation, the strengths of the spin-orbit interactions and the Coulomb interaction. The ac conductance exhibits a significant anisotropic behavior and a out-of-plane spin polarization which can be tuned by an in-plane electric field.

In this study, we investigate the tunneling conductance at a finite temperature in a normal metal/ferromagnetic superconductor nano-junction where the ferromagnetic superconductor (FS) is in three different cooper pairing states: spin singlet s-wave pairing (SWP), spin triplet opposite spin pairing (OSP), and spin triplet equal spin pairing (ESP) while including Fermiwave mismatch (FWM) and effective mass mismatch (EMM) in two sides of the nano-junction. We find that the conductance shows clearly different behaviors all depending on the symmetries of cooper pairing in a mannerthat the conductance spectra shows a gap-like structure, two interior dipsstructure and zero bias peak for SWP, OSP, and ESP, respectively. Also, theeffective FS gap (δeff) is a linear and decreasing function of exchange field. The slope of (δeff) versus exchange field for OSP is twice the SWP. Thus, we can determine the spin polarization of N/FS nano-junction based on the dependence of (δeff) to exchange field.

We study the problem of spin current pumping in a one-dimensional quantum wire when there exist two orthogonal Rashba spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) in different regions which evolve with time and can be induced by the perpendicular electric fields. On one hand, we demonstrate that the time-evolving Rashba SOC is equivalent to the spin-dependent electric field and the scheme may lead to the pure spin current associated with well suppressed charge current. On the other hand, we adopt the non-equilibrium Green's function method and numerically find that the parameter loop must satisfy certain condition for the successful pumping. We also study the effect of the Fermi energy and the inevitable disorder on the spin current. The implications of these results are discussed.

In this paper, we find that topological insulators with time-reversal symmetryand inversion symmetry featuring two-dimensional quantum spin Hall (QSH) state can be divided into 16 classes, which are characterized by four Z2topological variables ζk=0,1 at four points with high symmetry in the Brillouin zone. We obtain the corresponding edge states for each one of these sixteen classes of QSHs. In addition, it is predicted that massless fermionic excitations appear at the quantum phase transition between different QSH states. In the end, we also briefly discuss the three-dimensional case.

We systematically investigate the mass spectra of {Q\bar{s}}{bar{Q}(')s}molecular states in the framework of QCD sum rules. The interpolating currents representing the molecular states are proposed. Technically, contributions of the operators up to dimension six are included in operator product expansion (OPE). The masses for molecular states with various{Q\bar{s}} {\bar{Q}(')s} configurations are presented. The result 4.36±0.08 GeV for the D*s\bar{D}*s0 molecular state is consistent withthe mass 4350+4.6-5.1 ± 0.7 MeV of the newly observed X(4350), which could support X(4350) interpreted as a D*s\bar{D}*s0 molecular state.

We theoretically study the spin transport through a two-terminal quantum dot device under the influence of a symmetric spin bias and circularly polarized light. It is found that the combination of the circularly polarized light and the applied spin bias can result in a net charge current. The resultant charge current is large enough to be measured when properly choosing the system parameters. The resultant charge current can be used to deduce the spin bias due to the fact that there exists a simple linear relation between them. When the external circuit is open,a charge bias instead of a charge current can be induced, which is also measurable by present technologies. These findings indicate a new approach to detect the spin bias by using circularly polarized light.

First-principles calculations have been performed for the study of the electronic band structure and ferromagnetic properties of double perovskite Ca2CrSbO6. The density of states, total energy, spin magnetic moment, and charge density were calculated and analyzed in details. It is found that Ca2CrSbO6 has a stable ferromagnetic ground state and the spin magnetic moment per molecule is about 2.99#B. The chromium contributes the most in the total magnetic moments. The results indicate that Ca2CrSbO6 is half-metallic.

A magnetic field-controlled spin-current diode is theoretically proposed, which consists of a junction with an interacting quantum dot sandwiched between a pair of nonmagnetic electrodes. By applying a spin bias VS across the junction, a pure spin current can be obtained in a certain gate voltage regime, regardless of whether the Coulomb repulsion energy exists. More interestingly, if we applied an external magnetic field on the quantum dot, we observed a clear asymmetry in the spectrum of spin current IS as a function of spin bias, while the charge current always decays to zero in the Coulomb blockade regime. Such asymmetry in the current profile suggests a spin diode-like behavior with respect to the spin bias, while the net charge through the device is almost zero. Different from the traditional charge current diode, this design can change the polarity direction and rectifying ability by adjusting the external magnetic field, which is very convenient. This device scheme can be compatible with current technologies and has potential applications in spintronics or quantum processing.

We theoretically investigate the spin-orbit interaction in GaAs/AlxGa1 x As coupled quantum wells. We consider the contribution of the interface-related Rashba term as well as the linear and cubic Dresselhaus terms to the spin splitting. For the coupled quantum wells which bear an inherent structure inversion asymmetry, the same probability density distribution of electrons in the two step quantum wells results in a large spin splitting from the interface term. If the widths of the two step quantum wells are different, the electron probability density in the wider step quantum well is considerably higher than that in the narrower one, resulting in the decrease of the spin splitting from the interface term. The results also show that the spin splitting of the coupled quantum well is not significantly larger than that of a step quantum well.

The collective charge density excitations in a free-standing nanorod with a two-dimensional parabolic quantum well are investigated within the framework of Bohm-Pine’s random-phase approximation in the two-subband model. The new simplified analytical expressions of the Coulomb interaction matrix elements and dielectric functions are derived and numerically discussed. In addition, the electron density and temperature dependences of dispersion features are also investigated. We find that in the two-dimensional parabolic quantum well, the intrasubband upper branch is coupled with the intersubband mode, which is quite different from other quasi-one-dimensional systems like a cylindrical quantum wire with an infinite rectangular potential. In addition,we also find that higher temperature results in the intersubband mode(with an energy of 12 meV(~ 3 THz)) becoming totally damped, which agrees well with the experimental results of Raman scattering in the literature. These interesting properties may provide useful references to the design of free-standing nanorod based devices.

We study the effect of a noisy environment on spin and charge transport in ballistic quantum wires with spin-orbit coupling (Rashba coupling). We find that the wire then acts as a dephasing diode, inducing very different dephasing of the spins of right and left movers. We also show how Berry phase (geometric phase) in a curved wire can induce such asymmetric dephasing, in addition to purely geometric dephasing. We propose ways to measure these effects through spin detectors, spin-echo techniques, and Aharanov-Bohm interferometry.

The T=0 transport properties of a wire interacting with a lateral two-level quantum dot are studied by using an exact numerical calculation. The wire conductance, the spin–spin correlation and the Kondo temperature are obtained as a function of the dot level energy spacing. When the dot has two electrons and spin SD1, the wire current is totally quenched by the S=1 Kondo effect. The Kondo temperature is maximum at the singlet–triplet transition and its dependence upon the dot energy spacing follows a non-universal scaling law.
