We investigate the geometric phase or Berry phase acquired by a spin half which is both subject to a slowly varying magnetic field and weakly coupled to a dissipative environment (either quantum or classical). We study how this phase is modified by the environment and find that the modification is of a geometric nature. While the original Berry phase (for an isolated system) is the flux of a monopole field through the loop traversed by the magnetic field, the environment-induced modification of the phase is the flux of a quadrupolelike field. We find that the environment-induced phase is complex, and its imaginary part is a geometric contribution to dephasing. Its sign depends on the direction of the loop. Unlike the Berry phase, this geometric dephasing is gauge invariant for open paths of the magnetic field.  相似文献

Exchange-coupled spin qubits in semiconductor nanostructures are shown to be vulnerable to dephasing caused by charge noise invariably present in the semiconductor environment. This decoherence of exchange gate by environmental charge fluctuations arises from the fundamental Coulombic nature of the Heisenberg coupling and presents a serious challenge to the scalability of the widely studied exchange gate solid state spin quantum computer architectures. We estimate dephasing times for coupled spin qubits in a wide range (from 1 ns up to >1 micros) depending on the exchange coupling strength and its sensitivity to charge fluctuations.  相似文献

A Kramers pair of helical edge states in quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) is robust against normal dephasing but not robust to spin dephasing. In our work, we provide an effective spin dephasing mechanism in the puddles of two-dimensional (2D) QSHE, which is simulated as quantum dots modeled by 2D massive Dirac Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that the spin dephasing effect can originate from the combination of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and electron-phonon interaction, which gives rise to inelastic backscattering in edge states within the topological insulator quantum dots, although the time-reversal symmetry is preserved throughout. Finally, we discuss the tunneling between extended helical edge states and local edge states in the QSH quantum dots, which leads to backscattering in the extended edge states. These results can explain the more robust edge transport in InAs/GaSb QSH systems.  相似文献

It is shown how homonuclear distances and homonuclear dipolar lattice sums between spin-1/2 nuclei can be measured by a pulsed solid-state NMR experiment under magic-angle spinning conditions. The presented technique is based on double-quantum coherence filtering. Instead of measuring a build-up of double-quantum coherence the pulse sequence is designed to dephase double-quantum coherence. This is achieved by exciting double-quantum coherence either with the help of the through-space dipolar coupling or the through-bond dipolar coupling while the dephasing relies on the through-space dipolar coupling as selected by a gamma-encoded pulse sequence from the C/R symmetry class. Since dephasing curves can be normalized on zero dephasing, it is possible to analyze the initial dephasing regime and hence determine dipolar lattice sums (effective dipolar couplings) in multiple-spin systems. A formula for the effective dipolar coupling is derived theoretically and validated by numerical calculations and experiments on crystalline model compounds for (13)C and (31)P spin systems. The double-quantum dephasing experiment can be combined with constant-time data sampling to compensate for relaxation effects, consequently only two experimental data points are necessary for a single distance measurement. The phase cycling overhead for the constant-time experiment is minimal because a short cogwheel phase cycle exists. A 2D implementation is demonstrated on [(13)C(3)]alanine.  相似文献

Kondo correlation in a spin polarized quantum dot (QD) results from the dynamical formation of a spin singlet between the dot's net spin and a Kondo cloud of electrons in the leads, leading to enhanced coherent transport through the QD. We demonstrate here significant dephasing of such transport by coupling the QD and its leads to potential fluctuations in a nearby "potential detector." The qualitative dephasing is similar to that of a QD in the Coulomb blockade regime in spite of the fact that the mechanism of transport is quite different. A much stronger than expected suppression of coherent transport is measured, suggesting that dephasing is induced mostly in the "Kondo cloud" of electrons within the leads and not in the QD.  相似文献

A new spin dephasing mechanism is proposed for semiconductors with carrier momentum-dependent transition energies (inhomogeneous broadening) between spin states. In the presence of this inhomogeneous broadening of the spin transitions, spin-conserving (SC) scatterings lead to irreversible spin dephasing in a complete analogy to the optical dephasing of inhomogeneously broadened optical transitions. This phenomenon is demonstrated for the case when the g-factor becomes electron-energy dependent. Received 29 June 2000  相似文献

We calculate the oscillations of the dc conductance across a mesoscopic ring, simultaneously tuned by applied magnetic and electric fields orthogonal to the ring. The oscillations depend on the Aharonov-Bohm flux and of the spin-orbit coupling. They result from mixing of the dynamical phase, including the Zeeman spin splitting, and of geometric phases. By changing the applied fields, the geometric phase contribution to the conductance oscillations can be tuned from the adiabatic (Berry) to the nonadiabatic (Ahronov-Anandan) regime. To model a realistic device, we also include nonzero backscattering at the connection between ring and contacts, and a random phase for electron wave function, accounting for dephasing effects.  相似文献

We analyze the influence of a dissipative environment on geometric phases in a quantum system subject to non-adiabatic evolution. We find dissipative contributions to the acquired phase and modification of dephasing, considering the cases of both weak short-correlated noise and slow quasi-stationary noise. Motivated by recent experiments, we find the leading non-adiabatic corrections to the results, known for the adiabatic limit.  相似文献

We present measurements of the magnetoconductance of long and narrow quasi-one-dimensional gold wires containing magnetic iron impurities in a temperature range extending from 15 mK to 4.2 K. The dephasing rate extracted from the weak antilocalization shows a pronounced plateau in a temperature region of 300-800 mK, associated with the phase breaking due to the Kondo effect. Below the Kondo temperature, the dephasing rate decreases linearly with temperature, in contradiction with standard Fermi-liquid theory. Our data suggest that the formation of a spin glass due to the interactions between the magnetic moments is responsible for the observed anomalous temperature dependence.  相似文献

Symmetry and spin dephasing in (110)-grown GaAs quantum wells (QWs) are investigated applying magnetic field induced photogalvanic effect and time-resolved Kerr rotation. We show that magnetic field induced photogalvanic effect provides a tool to probe the symmetry of (110)-grown quantum wells. The photocurrent is only observed for asymmetric structures but vanishes for symmetric QWs. Applying Kerr rotation we prove that in the latter case the spin relaxation time is maximal; therefore, these structures set the upper limit of spin dephasing in GaAs QWs. We also demonstrate that structure inversion asymmetry can be controllably tuned to zero by variation of delta-doping layer positions.

We studied transport properties of a disordered tight-binding model (XX spin chain) in the presence of dephasing. Focusing on diffusive behaviour in the thermodynamic limit at high energies, we analytically derived the dependence of conductivity on dephasing and disorder strengths. As a function of dephasing, conductivity exhibits a single maximum at the optimal dephasing strength. The scaling of the position of this maximum with disorder strength is different for small and large disorders. In addition, we studied periodic disorder for which we found a resonance phenomenon, with conductivity having two maxima as a function of dephasing strength. If the disorder is non-zero only at a random fraction of all sites, conductivity is approximately the same as in the case of a disorder on all sites but with a rescaled disorder strength.  相似文献

We present phase coherence time measurements in quasi-one-dimensional Ag wires doped with Fe Kondo impurities of different concentrations n_{s}. Because of the relatively high Kondo temperature T_{K} approximately 4.3 K of this system, we are able to explore a temperature range from above T_{K} down to below 0.01T_{K}. We show that the magnetic contribution to the dephasing rate gamma_{m} per impurity is described by a single, universal curve when plotted as a function of T/T_{K}. For T>0.1T_{K}, the dephasing rate is remarkably well described by recent numerical results for spin S=1/2 impurities. At lower temperature, we observe deviations from this theory. Based on a comparison with theoretical calculations for S>1/2, we discuss possible explanations for the observed deviations.  相似文献

We study theoretically the geometric phase of a double-quantum-dot(DQD) system measured by a quantum point contact(QPC) in the pure dephasing and dissipative environments, respectively. The results show that in these two environments, the coupling strength between the quantum dots has an enhanced impact on the geometric phase during a quasiperiod. This is due to the fact that the expansion of the width of the tunneling channel connecting the two quantum dots accelerates the oscillations of the electron between the quantum dots and makes the length of the evolution path longer. In addition, there is a notable near-zero region in the geometric phase because the stronger coupling between the system and the QPC freezes the electron in one quantum dot and the solid angle enclosed by the evolution path is approximately zero, which is associated with the quantum Zeno effect. For the pure dephasing environment, the geometric phase is suppressed as the dephasing rate increases which is caused only by the phase damping of the system. In the dissipative environment, the geometric phase is reduced with the increase of the relaxation rate which results from both the energy dissipation and phase damping of the system. Our results are helpful for using the geometric phase to construct the fault-tolerant quantum devices based on quantum dot systems in quantum information.  相似文献

We study nonequilibrium dephasing in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We demonstrate that the shot noise at the beam splitter of the interferometer generates an ensemble of nonequilibrium electron density configurations and that electron interactions induce configuration-specific phase shifts of an interfering electron. The resulting dephasing exhibits two characteristic features, a lobe pattern in the visibility and phase jumps of pi, in good agreement with experimental data.  相似文献

We demonstrate a controlled dephasing experiment via exploiting a unique entangled interferometer-detector system, realized in an electronic mesoscopic structure. We study the dephasing process both from the which path information available in the detector and, alternatively, from the direct effect of the detector on the interferometer. Detection is possible only due to an induced phase change in the detector. Even though this phase change cannot actually be measured, strong dephasing of the interferometer took place. The intricate role of detector's noise and coherency are investigated.  相似文献

Time-resolved optical spin-quantum-beat measurements performed on magnetically doped II-VI bulk semiconductors reveal an increase of the electron spin dephasing time with rising temperature typical for motional narrowing. With the dephasing being notably faster than in undoped II-VI semiconductors, the magnetic dopants must play a key role, modifying the known dephasing mechanisms and introducing new ones. Focusing on the latter, we theoretically explore the spin dephasing channel arising from magnetization fluctuations sampled by the itinerant excitons. This mechanism suffices to explain quantitatively the results of our time-resolved Faraday-rotation experiments on optically excited Cd(1-x)Mn(x)Te which we present here as a function of magnetic field, temperature and manganese dopant density. In addition to electron spin-quantum beats, some of our experiments reveal hole spin beats as well.  相似文献

A method for selectively suppressing the signals of OH and NH protons in (1)H combined rotation and multiple-pulse spectroscopy (CRAMPS) and in (1)H-(13)C heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) solid-state NMR spectra is presented. It permits distinction of overlapping CH and OH/NH proton signals, based on the selective dephasing of the magnetization of OH and NH protons by their relatively large (1)H chemical-shift anisotropies. For NH protons, the (14)N-(1)H dipolar coupling also contributes significantly to this dephasing. The dephasing is achieved by a new combination of heteronuclear recoupling of these anisotropies with (1)H homonuclear dipolar decoupling. Since the 180 degrees pulses traditionally used for heteronuclear dipolar and chemical-shift anisotropy recoupling would result in undesirable homonuclear dephasing of proton magnetization, instead the necessary inversion of the chemical-shift Hamiltonian every half rotation period is achieved by inverting the phases of all the pulses in the HW8 multiple-pulse sequence. In the HETCOR experiments, carefully timed (13)C 180 degrees pulses remove the strong dipolar coupling to the nearby (13)C spin. The suppression of NH and OH peaks is demonstrated on crystalline model compounds. The technique in combination with HETCOR NMR is applied to identify the CONH and NH-CH groups in chitin and to distinguish NH and aromatic proton peaks in a peat humin.  相似文献

We study spin-orbit mediated relaxation and dephasing of electron spins in quantum dots. We show that higher order contributions provide a relaxation mechanism that dominates for low magnetic fields and is of geometrical origin. In the low-field limit relaxation is dominated by coupling to electron-hole excitations and possibly 1/f noise rather than phonons.  相似文献

We measure singlet-triplet dephasing in a two-electron double quantum dot in the presence of an exchange interaction which can be electrically tuned from much smaller to much larger than the hyperfine energy. Saturation of dephasing and damped oscillations of the spin correlator as a function of time are observed when the two interaction strengths are comparable. Both features of the data are compared with predictions from a quasistatic model of the hyperfine field.  相似文献
