In several auditoria, it has been observed that the reverberation time is longer than expected and that the cause is a horizontal reverberant field established in the region near the ceiling, a field which is remote from the sound absorbing audience. This has been observed in the Boston Symphony Hall, Massachusetts, and the Stadthalle Göttingen, Germany. Subjective remarks on their acoustics suggest that there are no unfavourable comments linked to the secondary sound field. Two acoustic scale models are considered here. In a generic rectangular concert hall model, the walls and ceiling contained openings in which either plane or scattering panels could be placed. With plane panels, the model reverberation time (RT) was measured as 53% higher than the Sabine prediction (frequency 500/1000 Hz), compared with 8% higher with scattering panels. The second model of a 300 seat lecture theatre with a 6 m or 8 m high ceiling had raked seating. In this case, the amount of absorption in the model was increased until the point was reached where speech had acceptable intelligibility, with the early energy fraction, D ? 0.5. For this acceptable speech condition with the 6 m ceiling, the measured mid-frequency T15 was 1.47 s, whereas the Sabine predicted RT was 1.06 s. The sound decay was basically non-linear with T30 > T15 > EDT. Exploiting a high-level horizontal reverberant field offers the possibility of acoustics that are better adapted as suitable for both speech and unamplified music, without any physical change in the auditorium. Using secondary reverberation in an auditorium for a wide variety of music might also be beneficial.  相似文献

The parameter, "Strength of Sound G" is closely related to loudness. Its magnitude is dependent, inversely, on the total sound absorption in a room. By comparison, the reverberation time (RT) is both inversely related to the total sound absorption in a hall and directly related to its cubic volume. Hence, G and RT in combination are vital in planning the acoustics of a concert hall. A newly proposed "Bass Index" is related to the loudness of the bass sound and equals the value of G at 125 Hz in decibels minus its value at mid-frequencies. Listener envelopment (LEV) is shown for most halls to be directly related to the mid-frequency value of G. The broadening of sound, i.e., apparent source width (ASW) is given by degree of source broadening (DSB) which is determined from the combined effect of early lateral reflections as measured by binaural quality index (BQI) and strength G. The optimum values and limits of these parameters are discussed.  相似文献

Many new criteria for good auditorium acoustics have been proposed in recent years. These criteria take into account the details of human perception of sound, as well as the physics of sound propagation—for example, the temporal and directional distribution of reflected sounds received binaurally is thought to be very important. However, many seats in well-known auditoria have inadequate sightlines and thus people sitting in them lack direct sound components. Since it is the direct sound that gives information regarding the temporal sequence and location of sound sources, and, to some extent, also determines the ability to perceive subsequent reflected sound components, it is essential that all seats in an auditorium should have good sightlines and thus direct soundlines.  相似文献

To gain information from complex auditory scenes, it is necessary to determine which of the many loudness, pitch, and timbre changes originate from a single source. Grouping sound into sources based on spatial information is complicated by reverberant energy bouncing off multiple surfaces and reaching the ears from directions other than the source's location. The ability to localize sounds despite these echoes has been explored with the precedence effect: Identical sounds presented from two locations with a short stimulus onset asynchrony (e.g., 1-5 ms) are perceived as a single source with a location dominated by the lead sound. Importantly, echo thresholds, the shortest onset asynchrony at which a listener reports hearing the lag sound as a separate source about half of the time, can be manipulated by presenting sound pairs in contexts. Event-related brain potentials elicited by physically identical sounds in contexts that resulted in listeners reporting either one or two sources were compared. Sound pairs perceived as two sources elicited a larger anterior negativity 100-250 ms after onset, previously termed the object-related negativity, and a larger posterior positivity 250-500 ms. These results indicate that the models of room acoustics listeners form based on recent experience with the spatiotemporal properties of sound modulate perceptual as well as later higher-level processing.  相似文献

Optimum data windows make it possible to determine accurately the amplitude, phase, and frequency of one or more tones (sinusoidal components) in a signal. Procedures presented in this paper can be applied to noisy signals, signals having moderate nonstationarity, and tones close in frequency. They are relevant to many areas of acoustics where sounds are quasistationary. Among these are acoustic probes transmitted through media and natural sounds, such as animal vocalization, speech, and music. The paper includes criteria for multitone FFT block design and an example of application to sound transmission in the atmosphere.  相似文献

This study carried out a questionnaire field investigation in two typical large dining spaces. The results suggest that the acoustic comfort of diners has an influence on the comfort evaluation of the overall dining environment, and background noise is an important factor affecting the acoustic comfort evaluation of diners. The role of various individual sound sources in background noise has been investigated, considering general background music, speech sound, activity sound, and mechanical noise, and it has been revealed that background music, other diners’ speech sound and tableware’s impact sound has a dominant impact on the acoustic comfort evaluation of diners. Compared with the existence of background music in background noise, diners’ acoustic comfort evaluation is higher than that without background music. The loudness, articulation, noise level and preference degree of various individual sound sources are factors which affect diners’ acoustic comfort evaluation on sound sources. In terms of demographic and social factors, gender and the frequency of dining out have a significant impact on diners’ acoustic comfort evaluation.  相似文献

Sensorineural hearing loss is accompanied by loudness recruitment, a steeper-than-normal rise of perceived loudness with presentation level. To compensate for this abnormality, amplitude compression is often applied (e.g., in a hearing aid). Alternatively, since speech intelligibility has been modeled as the perception of fast energy fluctuations, enlarging these (by means of expansion) may improve speech intelligibility. Still, even if these signal-processing techniques prove useful in terms of speech intelligibility, practical application might be hindered by unacceptably low sound quality. Therefore, both speech intelligibility and sound quality were evaluated for syllabic compression and expansion of the temporal envelope. Speech intelligibility was evaluated with an adaptive procedure, based on short everyday sentences either in noise or with a competing speaker. Sound quality was measured by means of a rating-scale procedure, for both speech and music. In a systematic setup, both the ratio of compression or expansion and the number of independent processing bands were varied. Individual hearing thresholds were compensated for by a listener-specific filter and amplification. Both listeners with normal hearing and listeners with sensorineural hearing impairment participated as paid volunteers. The results show that, on average, both compression and expansion fail to show better speech intelligibility or sound quality than linear amplification.  相似文献

The study of mosque acoustics, with regard to acoustical characteristics, sound quality for speech intelligibility, and other applicable acoustic criteria, has been largely neglected. In this study a background as to why mosques are designed as they are and how mosque design is influenced by worship considerations is given. In the study the acoustical characteristics of typically constructed contemporary mosques in Saudi Arabia have been investigated, employing a well-known impulse response. Extensive field measurements were taken in 21 representative mosques of different sizes and architectural features in order to characterize their acoustical quality and to identify the impact of air conditioning, ceiling fans, and sound reinforcement systems on their acoustics. Objective room-acoustic indicators such as reverberation time (RT) and clarity (C50) were measured. Background noise (BN) was assessed with and without the operation of air conditioning and fans. The speech transmission index (STI) was also evaluated with and without the operation of existing sound reinforcement systems. The existence of acoustical deficiencies was confirmed and quantified. The study, in addition to describing mosque acoustics, compares design goals to results obtained in practice and suggests acoustical target values for mosque design. The results show that acoustical quality in the investigated mosques deviates from optimum conditions when unoccupied, but is much better in the occupied condition.  相似文献

The early reflections in the room impulse response are usually defined as those observed within the initial 80 ms after the arrival of the direct sound, after which time the sound field is called reverberant. This number was chosen from measurements of other functions in a limited number of halls. In order to give an objective foundation to this time separation and to establish a physical indicator for it, a new method is proposed that defines a "transition time t(L)," which is the time at which the energy correlation between the direct plus initial sound and the subsequent decaying sound first achieves a specified low value. For various halls this number is shown and its relevance as a new parameter is discussed.  相似文献

Dynamic-range compression (DRC) is used in the music industry to maximize loudness. The amount of compression applied to commercial recordings has increased over time due to a motivating perspective that louder music is always preferred. In contrast to this viewpoint, artists and consumers have argued that using large amounts of DRC negatively affects the quality of music. However, little research evidence has supported the claims of either position. The present study investigated how DRC affects the perceived loudness and sound quality of recorded music. Rock and classical music samples were peak-normalized and then processed using different amounts of DRC. Normal-hearing listeners rated the processed and unprocessed samples on overall loudness, dynamic range, pleasantness, and preference, using a scaled paired-comparison procedure in two conditions: un-equalized, in which the loudness of the music samples varied, and loudness-equalized, in which loudness differences were minimized. Results indicated that a small amount of compression was preferred in the un-equalized condition, but the highest levels of compression were generally detrimental to quality, whether loudness was equalized or varied. These findings are contrary to the "louder is better" mentality in the music industry and suggest that more conservative use of DRC may be preferred for commercial music.  相似文献

筝是中国古老的弹弦乐器。但迄今为止,对其声功率级一直未进行科学的测定。本文在一混响室内根据ISO及GB标准,对二十一弦筝的声功率级进行了首次测定。两位资深乐师在混响室内分别演奏各自的乐器,通过围绕乐师和乐器布置的四通道测试设备,对筝所辐射的声功率级和动态范围进行测定。测试结果表明,中国筝在以不同力度演奏单音、音阶和乐曲时所辐射的声功率级及其频率特性均有所不同。考虑到乐器演奏音阶时所辐射的声功率级及其动态范围与演奏乐曲时的声功率级接近,并且,音乐的空间感也大都在乐器以f力度演奏乐曲的强音标志乐段时最为显著,故此我们建议中国筝所辐射的声功率级用其以f力度演奏音阶时的平均声功率级表示。本文测试的两架中国筝以f力度演奏音阶时的平均声功率级为85.9dB。文中不仅首次公布了中国筝声功率级的测试结果,并且所介绍的测试方法对其它乐器声功率级测试也具有借鉴意义。民族乐器所辐射的声音性能的确定是民族音乐厅堂音质研究的基础。  相似文献

The indirect auditory feedback from one's own voice arises from sound reflections at the room boundaries or from sound reinforcement systems. The relative variations of indirect auditory feedback are quantified through room acoustic parameters such as the room gain and the voice support, rather than the reverberation time. Fourteen subjects matched the loudness level of their own voice (the autophonic level) to that of a constant and external reference sound, under different synthesized room acoustics conditions. The matching voice levels are used to build a set of equal autophonic level curves. These curves give an indication of the amount of variation in voice level induced by the acoustic environment as a consequence of the sidetone compensation or Lombard effect. In the range of typical rooms for speech, the variations in overall voice level that result in a constant autophonic level are on the order of 2 dB, and more than 3 dB in the 4 kHz octave band. By comparison of these curves with previous studies, it is shown that talkers use acoustic cues other than loudness to adjust their voices when speaking in different rooms.  相似文献

Sound strength and reverberation time measurements have been carried out in six small concert halls in Cambridge, UK. The sound strength G is a measure of the physical sound level in a concert hall and is closely related to the subjective sensation of loudness. It compares integrated impulse responses at a point in the measured room with that measured at ten metres distance in the free field.The aim of the measurements is to investigate the acoustic characteristics of the halls concerning sound strength and reverberation time. Furthermore the effect of the variable acoustics in the halls on these parameters is discussed in this paper. Especially for bigger ensembles it is often desirable to reduce the sound level in a small concert hall. The measurement results show that for a fixed hall volume, this can primarily be achieved by decreasing the reverberation time in the hall. However, with regard to the sound quality of a hall and the recommended reverberation times for chamber music, reverberation time cannot be reduced by an arbitrary extent. Therefore reverberation time and strength have to be balanced very carefully in order to obtain sufficient reverberation whilst at the same time avoiding excessive loudness. Finally the measured strength levels are compared to values derived from traditional and revised theory [Barron M, Lee L-J. Energy relations in concert auditoriums. J Acoust Soc Am 1988;84(2):618-28] on strength calculations in order to assess the accuracy of the theory for small chamber music halls. 混响是室内声学中的重要现象,在室内设计与音频信号处理中都需要测量或估计混响时间。本文改进了一种基于最大似然估计的混响时间盲估计方法,即采用说话人在房间中自然说话时发出的混响语音信号来估计混响时间的方法。该方法首先确定语音衰减段的最优边界,其次计算该衰减段的两个额外参数,据此筛选出符合条件的语音段,最后将满足条件的语音段采用最大似然估计得到混响时间估计值。在五个不同混响时间条件下的仿真表明,与已有方法相比,改进方法估计的混响时间同真实混响时间的偏差更小,方差更低,估计准确性较高。  相似文献

The effect of resonators on the acoustics of orthodox churches was studied. Empty bottles of commercial refreshment were used as resonators. A total number of 480 resonators having the same resonant frequency, were placed inside a church, in steps of 100 resonators each time, and the impulse response of the church was measured and analyzed in 1/1 and 1/3 octave band analysis. The effect of resonators is rather poor. An amplification of sound in the near field of resonators was observed as well as a small attenuation of the sound level in the reverberant part of the field in the resonant frequency and near to a higher overtone. A remarkable increase of C80 and D50 at resonant frequency was also observed.  相似文献

Spatial correlation and coherence functions in reverberant sound fields are relevant to the acoustics of enclosed spaces and related areas. Theoretical expressions for the spatial correlation and coherence functions between signals representing the pressure and/or the components of the particle velocity vector in a reverberant sound field are established in the literature and most of these have also been corroborated with measurements [F. Jacobsen, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 108, 204-210 (2000)]. In the present paper, these expressions are generalized to microphones of first-order directivity, whereby the directivity can be expressed in terms of pressure and pressure gradient. It is shown that the resulting spatial correlation and coherence functions can be expressed in terms of the established spatial correlation and coherence functions. The derived theoretical expression for the spatial coherence function is validated with a modeled diffuse sound field. Further, it is compared with the experimental coherence obtained from the reverberant tails of room impulse responses measured with two common surround sound microphone setups in a concert and a lecture hall.  相似文献

During the acoustical design of, e.g., auditoria or open-plan offices, it is important to know how speech can be perceived in various parts of the room. Different objective methods have been developed to measure and predict speech intelligibility, and these have been extensively used in various spaces. In this study, two such methods were compared, the speech transmission index (STI) and the speech intelligibility index (SII). Also the simplification of the STI, the room acoustics speech transmission index (RASTI), was considered. These quantities are all based on determining an apparent speech-to-noise ratio on selected frequency bands and summing them using a specific weighting. For comparison, some data were needed on the possible differences of these methods resulting from the calculation scheme and also measuring equipment. Their prediction accuracy was also of interest. Measurements were made in a laboratory having adjustable noise level and absorption, and in a real auditorium. It was found that the measurement equipment, especially the selection of the loudspeaker, can greatly affect the accuracy of the results. The prediction accuracy of the RASTI was found acceptable, if the input values for the prediction are accurately known, even though the studied space was not ideally diffuse.  相似文献
