Monolayers of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODA) at the air/water interface were used as model for charged surfaces to study the adsorption of anionic polyelectrolytes. After spreading on a pure water surface the monolayers were compressed and subsequently transferred onto a polyelectrolyte solution employing the Fromherz technique. The polyelectrolyte adsorption was monitored by recording the changes in surface pressure at constant area. For poly(styrene sulfonate) and carboxymethylcellulose the plot of the surface pressure as function of time gave curves which indicate a direct correlation between the adsorbed amount and surface pressure as well as a solely diffusion controlled process. In the case of rigid rod-like poly(p-phenylene sulfonate)s the situation is more complicated. Plotting the surface pressure as function of time results in a curve with sigmoidal shape, characterized by an induction period. The induction period can be explained by a domain formation, which can be treated like a crystallization process. Employing the Avrami expression developed for polymer crystallization, the change in the surface pressure upon adsorption of rigid rod-like poly(p-phenylene sulfonate)s can be described. We present results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements of hydrogen-saturated silicon clusters islands formed on Si(111)-( 7×7) surfaces. Nanometer-size islands of Si6H12 with a height of 0.2-4 nm were assembled with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) using a tip-to-sample voltage larger than 3 V. STS spectra of Si6H12 cluster islands show characteristic peaks originating in resonance tunneling through discrete states of the clusters. The peak positions change little with island height, while the peak width shows a tendency of narrowing for the tall islands. The peak narrowing is interpreted as increase of lifetime of electron trapped at the cluster states. The lifetime was as short as 10-13 s resulting from interaction with the dangling bonds of surface atoms, which prevents charge accumulation at the cluster islands. Mechanical properties of polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules were studied using a new method combining atomic-force microscopy and reflection interference contrast microscopy. By measuring the force vs. deformation for poly(styrene sulfonate)/poly(allylamine) capsules the existence of different deformation regimes depending on the applied deformation was shown. The present paper focuses on the small-deformation regime. The elastic response of the deformed capsule was studied as a function of the wall thickness and the capsule size, and showed the theoretically expected variations. Osmotically induced deformations (invaginations) of polyelectrolyte capsules were observed in poly(styrene sulfonate, sodium salt) (PSS) solution since PSS of Mw 70 000 is excluded from the capsule interior. It was found that there is a critical osmotic pressure difference at which the initial spherical capsule shape becomes unstable and invaginations are formed. This critical osmotic pressure was obtained as a function of the wall thickness and the capsule size. A theoretical model is provided which describes the relationship between the critical osmotic pressure, the elasticity modulus, the capsule wall thickness, and the capsule radius. The model was verified by measuring the invagination onset as a function of particle radius and wall thickness. The elasticity modulus of the PSS/PAH (polyallylamine hydrochloride) polyelectrolyte multilayer was measured as a function of wall thickness and capsule diameter. The modulus ranges between 500 and 750 MPa, which indicates a relatively strongly interconnected polyelectrolyte multilayer structure. With higher molecular weight PAH the elasticity modulus of the PSS/PAH multilayer was slightly enhanced. Received 25 January 2000 and Received in final form 18 May 2000  相似文献

Cluster-cluster coalescence process of monodispersed Co clusters with mean diameter d = 8.5 and 13 nm deposited a plasma-gas-condensation-type cluster beam deposition system was investigated by in situ electrical conductivity measurements and ex situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and analyzed by percolation concept. The electrical conductivity measurement and TEM observation indicated that, below temperature T≈ 100°C, the Co clusters in the assemblies maintain their original structure as deposited at room temperature, while that the inter-cluster coalescence takes place at T > 100°C, although the size distribution and the interface morphology of the clusters showed no marked change at substrate temperatures T s≤200°C. We report on the phase behavior and scattering properties of colloidal complexes made from block copolymers and surfactants. The copolymer is poly(sodium acrylate)-b-poly(acrylamide), hereafter abbreviated as PANa-PAM, with molecular weight 5000 g/mol for the first block and 30000 g/mol for the second. In aqueous solutions and neutral pH, poly(sodium acrylate) is a weak polyelectrolyte, whereas poly(acrylamide) is neutral and in good-solvent conditions. The surfactant is dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and is of opposite charge with respect to the polyelectrolyte block. Combining dynamical light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering, we show that in aqueous solutions PANa-PAM diblocks and DTAB associate into colloidal complexes. For surfactant-to-polymer charge ratios Z lower than a threshold (Z(C) approximately 0.3), the complexes are single surfactant micelles decorated by few copolymers. Above the threshold, the colloidal complexes reveal an original core-shell microstructure. We have found that the core of typical radius 100-200 A is constituted from densely packed surfactant micelles connected by the polyelectrolyte blocks. The outer part of the colloidal complex is a corona and is made from the neutral poly(acrylamide) chains. Typical hydrodynamic sizes for the whole aggregate are around 1000 A. The aggregation numbers expressed in terms of numbers of micelles and copolymers per complex are determined and found to be comprised between 100-400, depending on the charge ratio Z and on the total concentration. We have also shown that the sizes of the complexes depend on the exact procedure of the sample preparation. We propose that the driving mechanism for the complex formation is similar to that involved in the phase separation of homopolyelectrolyte/surfactant systems. With copolymers, the presence of the neutral blocks prevents the macroscopic phase separation from occurring.  相似文献

This paper discusses the self-assembly of block copolymers into vesicular morphology. After a brief state of art of the field, a system based on an amphiphilic poly(butadiene)-b-poly(-L-glutamic acid) (PB-b-PGA) diblock copolymer in aqueous solution is discussed in detail. The aggregation behavior of this block copolymer has been investigated by means of fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic (DLS) and static (SLS) light scattering as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The diblock copolymer was found to form well-defined vesicles in water. The size of these so-called polymersomes or peptosomes could be reversibly manipulated as a function of both pH and ion strength. Depending on the pH of the aqueous solution, the hydrodynamic radii of these vesicles were found to vary from 100 nm to 150 nm. By cross-linking the 1,2-vinyl double bonds present in the polybutadiene block, the ability to transform a transient supramolecular self-organized aggregate into a permanent “shape-persistent stimuli-responsive nanoparticle” has been demonstrated. We study the properties of polyelectrolyte chains under different solvent conditions, using a variational technique. The free energy and the conformational properties of a polyelectrolyte chain are studied by minimizing the free energy FN, depending on N(N - 1)/2 trial probabilities that characterize the conformation of the chain. The Gaussian approximation is considered for a ring of length 24 < N < 28 and for an open chain of length 50 < N < 200 in poor- and theta-solvent conditions, including a Coulomb repulsion between the monomers. In theta-solvent conditions the blob size is measured and found in agreement with scaling theory, including charge depletion effects, expected for the case of an open chain. In poor-solvent conditions, a globule instability, driven by electrostatic repulsion, is observed. We notice also inhomogeneous behavior of the monomer-monomer correlation function, reminiscence of necklace formation in poor-solvent polyelectrolyte solutions. The atomic structure of single-wall carbon nanotube bundles produced by three different techniques (laser ablation, electric arc discharge and catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD)) has been characterized by electron diffraction and microscopy. Information on the helicity and the lattice packing has been obtained. Concerning the helicity, small bundles produced by CCVD exhibit only one or two tube helicities within a single bundle. The diffraction patterns of laser-ablation produced bundles also present well-defined but more diversified chiralities within a single bundle. By contrast the data acquired on bundles formed by arc discharge show a more diffuse pattern, characteristic of a random chirality dispersion within a single bundle. Concerning the lattice packing, informations are obtained via a detailed study of the equatorial line of the diffraction pattern for bundles produced by the three techniques. The local thermal conductivity of polycrystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics is measured and imaged by using a scanning thermal microscope (SThM) and complementary scanning electron microscope (SEM) based techniques at room temperature. The quantitative thermal conductivity for the AlN sample is gained by using a SThM with a spatial resolution of sub-micrometer scale through using the 3ω method. A thermal conductivity of 308 W/m·K within grains corresponding to that of high-purity single crystal AlN is obtained. The slight differences in thermal conduction between the adjacent grains are found to result from crystallographic misorientations, as demonstrated in the electron backscattered diffraction. A much lower thermal conductivity at the grain boundary is due to impurities and defects enriched in these sites, as indicated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.  相似文献

ABC triblock copolymers of the type poly[5-(N,N-dimethylamino)isoprene]-block-polystyrene-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (AiST) were synthesized and hydrolyzed to yield poly[5-(N,N-dimethylamino)isoprene]-block-polystyrene-block-poly(methacrylic acid) (AiSA) triblock copolyampholytes. Due to a complex solubility behavior the solution properties of these materials had to be investigated in THF/water solvent mixtures. Potentiometric titrations of AiSA triblock copolyampholytes showed two inflection points with the A block being deprotonated prior to the Ai hydrochloride block thus forming a polyzwitterion at the isoelectric point (iep). The aggregation behavior was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and freeze-fracture/transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We report on grain growth and related structure change in single phased Al-Li-Cu quasicrystals. The icosahedral phase grains have been investigated using scanning ion microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Regular boundaries between large grains have been observed both before and after high temperature annealing. The electron diffraction study shows that the grain growth is accompanied by a reduction of the phason-strains. The orientation relation between grains sets the 2-fold icosahedral axes parallel, and the coincidence of the planes depends on the phason strain-field. The effect of phason-strain field on these boundaries is discussed. It is proposed that the phason strain elimination can play a role in the grain growth. The complexation and the distribution of various cations, bound to a poly(styrene sulfonate) brush, have been investigated using infra-red spectroscopy and neutron reflectivity. Small counterions (like tetremethylammonium) are distributed throughout the brush in such a way that a local electroneutrality is ensured. They also exchange readily with other bulk small cations. On the other hand, model polycations are irreversibly trapped to the brush despite a relative small number of ionic bonds involved in the complexation. These complexed polycations are localized at the outer border of the brush, forming a macromolecular barrier. However, this spatial segregation does not allow the buildup of polyelectrolyte multilayers. Cationic surfactants are associated stoichiometrically with the brush sulfonates but unlike small counterions, this complexation is “irreversible” and induces a restructuring of the polymer interface. The surface of 1T-TiS2 was examined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The STM and AFM images of this compound were interpreted on the basis of the partial electron density ρ(r,EF) and total electron density ρ(r) of a slab which consists of six (001) 1T-TiS2 layers. Electronic structure calculations were performed using the ab-initio Hartree–Fock program crystal. It was found that the bright spots in experimental STM images correspond to sulfur atoms at both positive and negative bias voltages. The AFM image showed a periodicity which can be explained by the atomic corrugation at the surface. Structural defects on the surface were also investigated, and their interpretation constitutes experimental proof that only sulfur atoms were detected by scanning probe microscopies.  相似文献

The structural properties of nickel nanoparticles which are prepared by means of DC sputtering in argon and subsequently oxidized in ambient air are reported. Ex situ structural and chemical investigations utilizing (high resolution) transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy reveal that the particles consist of a metallic core surrounded by an oxide shell. The lattice constant of the nickel core is found to increase significantly with decreasing particle size. This widening of the nickel lattice is attributed to an interfacial stress that originates from the lattice mismatch between nickel and nickel oxide. Received 21 December 2000  相似文献

The template-directed formation of regular nanoparticle arrays on two-dimensional crystalline protein layers after their treatment with metal salt complexes was studied by transmission electron microscopy. For these investigations, bacterial surface layers (S layers), recrystallized in vitro into sheets and tube-shaped protein crystals with typical dimensions in the micrometer range, were used as the template. As identified by electron holography and scanning force microscopy, the S-layer tubes form alternating double layers when deposited onto a solid substrate surface. Two distinct pathways for the metal particle formation at the templates have been found: the site-specific growth of metal clusters by chemical reduction of the metal salt complexes, and the electron-beam induced growth of nanoparticles in the transmission electron microscope. Both mechanisms lead to regular arrays with particle densities > 6×1011 cm -2. Nanoparticle formation by electron exposure takes exclusively place in the flat-lying double-layered protein tubes, where a sufficient amount of metal complexes can be accumulated during sample preparation. Self-assembling properties of deoxyguanosine 5'-monophosphate in isotropic solutions of concentrations from 0.5 wt% to 15 wt% were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and 31P NMR spectroscopy. A slow diffusive mode with a diffusion coefficient D slow∼ 10-12 m2/s was detected by DLS for the whole concentration range. This mode is assigned to the translational motion of large globular aggregates, similar to those observed in DNA and other polyelectrolyte solutions. The existence of such aggregates was confirmed by freeze fracture electron microscopy. Close to the isotropic-cholesteric phase transition, at 4 wt% c 10 wt%, also a faster diffusive mode is observed in the polarized DLS response and a very fast mode is detected by depolarized DLS. These modes are related to translational and rotational diffusion of the columnar stacks of guanosine molecules, which are favorably formed in the relatively narrow pretransitional region. The stacking was also revealed from the appearance of a secondary resonance line in the 31P NMR spectra. Using the hydrodynamic theory of Tirado and Garcia de la Torre, the length of the cylindrical stacks was found to be L = 364±78 ?, which is significantly larger than the values reported for other guanosine derivatives. Static and dynamic light scattering and conductivity experiments were carried out on salt-free aqueous micellar solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium n-hexane sulfonate (CTAC_6SO_3) and cetyltrimethylammonium n-heptane sulfonate (CTAC_7SO_3) as a function of surfactant concentration. This study confirms the analogy between the behavior in the semi-dilute regime of elongated micellar systems and “classical” polyelectrolyte solutions. Time-resolved scattering experiments performed after a variation of concentration from about twice the overlap volume fraction to less than half of it revealed the existence of a structural relaxation with a characteristic time of several hours.
