We report and demonstrate an optical refractometer based on a compact fiber Michelson interferometer. The Michelson interferometer is composed of an asymmetrical twin-core fiber containing a central core and a side core. By chemically etching a segment of the twin-core fiber until the side core is exposed, the effective index of the side core in the etched region is sensitive to the environmental refractive index, which leads to a shift of the transmission spectrum of the Michelson interferometer. The experimental results show that such a device has a refractive index resolution of more than 800 nm/refractive index unit in the range of 1.34-1.37.  相似文献

A compact in-fiber integrated fiber-optic Michelson interferometer based accelerometer is proposed and investigated. In the system, the sensing element consists of a twin-core fiber acting as a bending simple supported beam. By demodulating the optical phase shift, we obtain that the acceleration is proportional to the force applied on the central position of the twin-core fiber. A simple model has been established to calculate the sensitivity and resonant frequency. The experimental results show that such an accelerometer has a sensitivity of 0.09 rad/g at the resonant frequency of 680 Hz.  相似文献

The band-pass characteristic of fiber grating Michelson interferometer is analyzed, which acts as bothband-pass filter and Q-switch. An erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on fiber grating Michelsoninterferometer is implemented for producing single longitudinal mode CW operation with 5 MHz spectrallinewidth and up to 6 mW output power. In Q-switched operation, stable fiber laser output pulses withrepetition rate of 800 Hz, pulse width of 0.6 μs, average power of 1.8 mW and peak power of 3.4 W aredemonstrated. The peak power and average power of the Q-switched pulses are varied with the repetitionrate.  相似文献

More than 200 m of germanosilica optical fiber is manufactured with an internal wire electrode running parallel to the core. In this new fabrication method the wire is integrated into the fiber during the draw process. This length of fiber is an order of magnitude longer than other previously reported fibers with internal electrodes. The optical loss is less than our measurement floor of 0.5 dB/m at 1550 nm. A 0.9-m section of the fiber is thermally poled, inducing a permanent second-order nonlinearity of 0.0125 pm/V. Methods to increase the induced nonlinearity are discussed. Integrating the wire into the fiber during the draw allows lengths of fiber with internal electrodes greater than 1 km to be manufactured and subsequently poled.  相似文献

A novel monitoring system for a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI) temperature sensor has yielded a resolution of 0.013 degrees C (0.0025 fringe). Light from a broadband source passes through a scanned Michelson interferometer and is reflected from a FFPI to produce a fringe pattern, the temporal position of which is proportional to a change in the optical length of the fiber interferometer. A second Michelson interferometer with a distributed-feedback laser source is used to correct for variations in the translation rate of the motor-driven scanning mirror. Coherence multiplexing of three such sensors has also been demonstrated.  相似文献

Integrated fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer for electro-optic switching   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Molten alloys under high pressure were used to obtain fibers with long internal electrodes that are solid at room temperature. An integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer was constructed from a twin-core twin-hole fiber that permitted application of an electric field preferentially to one of the cores. Good stability and a switching voltage of 1.4kV were measured with a 1-m-long fiber device with a quadratic voltage dependence.  相似文献

A parallel demodulation system for extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors is presented that is based on a Michelson interferometer and combines the methods of low-coherence interference and Fourier transform spectrum. Signals from EFPI and FBG sensors are obtained simultaneously by scanning one arm of a Michelson interferometer, and an algorithm model is established to process the signals and retrieve both the wavelength of the FBG and the cavity length of the EFPI at the same time, which are then used to determine the strain and temperature.  相似文献

A novel in-fiber modal interferometer is presented that is based on a nonadiabatic biconical fused taper that couples light between the cladding and the core, combined with the Fresnel reflection at the fiber end. It is observed that the returned light from this fiber structure shows a channeled spectrum similar to that of a two-wave Michelson interferometer. The application of this device as a fiber optic flowmeter sensor is demonstrated.  相似文献

A self-reference fiber Michelson interferometer measurement system, which employs fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) as in-fiber reflective mirrors and interleaves together two fiber Michelson interferometers that share the common-interferometric-optical path, is presented. One of the fiber interferometers is used to stabilise the system by the use of an electronic feedback loop to compensate the influences resulting from the environmental disturbances, while the other one is used to perform the measurement task. The influences resulting from the environmental disturbances have been eliminated by the compensating action of the electronic feedback loop, this makes the system suitable for on-line precision measurement. By means of the homodyne phase-tracking technique, the linearity of the measurement results of displacement measurements has been very high.  相似文献

We investigate polarization dependent differential group modal index sensitivity to temperature in twin-core photonic crystal fiber. Characteristics of guided modes and the group modal index difference in twin-core photonic crystal fiber (TC-PCF) are numerically analyzed. The geometrical asymmetry between the two cores induces significantly reduced power coupling between two core modes and difference in their effective indices. Two cores form two effective optical paths. We also experimentally demonstrate polarization dependent differential group modal index sensitivity to the temperature. Since the TC-PCF has polarization dependent group modal index difference, TC-PCF based interferometer shows input polarization dependent free spectral range and temperature sensitivities. The effective index difference between the two core modes tends to increase when the temperature increases.  相似文献

A highly stabilised vibration-displacement measurement system, which employs fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) to interleave two fiber Michelson interferometers that share the common-interferometric-optical path, is presented. The phase change in the interferometric signals of the two fiber Michelson interferometers have been tracked, respectively, with two electronic feedback loops. One of the fiber interferometers is used to stabilise the system by the use of an electronic feedback loop to compensate the environmental disturbances. The second fiber interferometer is used to perform the measurement task and employs another electronic feedback loop to track the phase change in the interferometric signal. The measurement system is able to measure vibration-displacement and provide the sense of direction of the displacement. The frequency range of the measured vibration-displacement is from 0.1 to 200 Hz and the measurement resolution is 10 nm.  相似文献

A novel two-mode fiber-optic interferometer employing a liquid-crystal-clad fiber as a modal filter is proposed. The liquid-crystal-clad fiber can guide one of the second-order modes, TE01, and leak out the other TM01 and HE21 modes. Thus two spatial modes, fundamental mode HE11 and second-order mode TE01 serve as the two arms of the interferometer to detect an external perturbation. The experimental results obtained when this interferometer was used to sense temperatures ranging from 20 to 100 degrees C are demonstrated.  相似文献

A twin-core erbium-doped fiber amplifier has been studied. We establish the theoretical model, propose the coupled-propagation equations, and then numerically simulate the characteristics of the amplifier. It is found that twin-core erbium-doped fiber amplifier can provide different gains for signals with different input powers and self-heal the extra channel loss between amplifying stages, thus equalizes the output signal level. The twin-core erbium-doped fiber amplifier is very suitable for the future wavelength-division-multiplexed and optical frequency-division-multiplexed fiber networks.  相似文献

An optical fiber multiplexing low coherence and high coherence interferometric system, which includes a Fizeau interferometer as the sensing element and a Michelson interferometer as the demodulating element, is designed for remote and high precision step height measurement. The Fizeau interferometer is placed in the remote field for sensing the measurand, while the Michelson interferometer which works in both modes of low coherence interferometry and high coherence interferometry is employed for demodulating the measurand. The range of the step height is determined by the low coherence interferometry and the value of it is measured precisely by the high coherence interferometry. High precision has been obtained by searching precisely the peak of the low coherence interferogram symmetrically from two sides of the low coherence interferogram and stabilizing the Michelson interferometer with a feedback loop. The maximum step height that could be measured is 6 mm while the measurement resolution is less than 1 nm. The standard deviation of 10 times measurement results of a step height of 1 mm configurated with two gauge blocks is 0.5 nm.  相似文献

We perform the second-order quantum interference experiment with the multimode photon pairs produced via an optical parametric oscillator far below threshold in a Michelson interferometer, measure the second-order correlation function in different cases. We find when the interferometer is highly unbalanced, the shape of the second-order correlation function is clearly dependent on the path length difference between two interfering beams. On the contrary, when the interferometer is nearly balanced, beside its height, the shape of the second-order correlation function is independent on the small path length difference. The second-order correlation function shows a multipeaked structure in both cases. All experimental results agree very well with the theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Coherent combining is demonstrated in a clad-pumped Yb-doped double-core fiber laser. A slope efficiency of more than 70% is achieved with 96% of the total output power in the fundamental mode of one of the two cores. This high combining efficiency is obtained when both cores are coupled via a biconical fused taper in a Michelson interferometer configuration.  相似文献

A dual-pass Mach–Zehnder interferometer filter using a section of twin-core fiber (TCF) loop mirror is proposed. The filter is theoretically and experimentally studied for various interferometer arm difference when TCF length is constant. Theoretical results are validated by the experimental demonstration and in good agreement with the experimental results. And then, by using the filter in a ring fiber laser, a stable and switchable dual-wavelength lasing is obtained experimentally. The 3-dB bandwidth and the SMSR of the output laser are 0.015 nm and higher than 62.4 dB, respectively. The peak power fluctuation and wavelength shift are also monitored to be less than 0.04 dB and 0.02 nm over an hour at room temperature. Furthermore, the output laser can be switched between single and dual wavelength by carefully adjusting the PCs. The experimental results show that the filter can suppress mode competition effectively, improve the SMSR availably, and enhance the stability of the output lasing.  相似文献
