On the duration of the total eclipse of a satellite of a body

This paper solves the problem of the duration of the total eclipseof a satellite of a body, provided that (a) the body is sphericalin shape and the mass distribution inside the body is sphericallysymmetrical; (b) the satellite is a very small object; (c) thesatellite's orbit around a body is circular and the satellitecan pass through the centre of its shadow; (d) a source of lightis the source of the conical body's shadow (umbra) and it doesnot change its apparent position in the sky; (e) there are noperturbations on the satellite's orbit. The solution presentedrepresents the general discussion of the problem based on utilizationof some parts of the theory of contraction mappings.     

On the Genus of a Subfield of a Field

In 1977 Babai showed that if Γ₁ is a subgroup of a finite group Γ₂, then the genus of Γ₁ is at most the genus of Γ₂. We establish a similar result for finite fields.     

On the nature of turbulence in a problem on the motion of a fluid behind a ledge

In the present paper, we suggest a numerical method for the analysis of the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid under the transition to the turbulent mode for an example of the numerical solution of a three-dimensional space problem on the fluid flow behind a ledge for various values of the Reynolds number. We show that, at the initial stages, the turbulence in the problem is developed via successive bifurcations of generation of a stable cycle, two-dimensional tori, and then three-dimensional tori in the infinite-dimensional phase space of the system.     

On the probability of the occurrence of a copy of a fixed graph in a random distance graph

The threshold probability of the occurrence of a copy of a balanced graph in a random distance graph is obtained. The technique used by P. Erd?s and A. Rényi for determining the threshold probability for the classical random graph could not be applied in the model under consideration. In this connection, a new method for deriving estimates of the number of copies of a balanced graph in a complete distance graph is developed.     

On the integral of a function along the trajectories of a nilpotent flow

On the codimension of the image of a derivation in a communicative field

Let δ be a derivation in a field K of characteristic 0, with fixed field k. We show that, if K/k is finitely generated, then the codimension, as k-vector space, of K δ + k in K is infinite, while in the infinitely generated case, the said codimension can be any finite non-negative integer.     

On the Birationality of the Bicanonical Map of a Surface Section of a Threefold

Let (?, ?) be a polarized threefold of log-general type. The birationality of the bicanonical map of a smooth surface S ∈ |?| is studied. This problem was previously considered and partially solved by the first and fourth author, who gave a satisfactory classification unless h¹(𝒪_?) = 0 and p_g(S) = 3, 4, 5. This article focuses on the remaining cases which are the hardest, settling the problem.
