Abelian subgroup separability of certain generalized free products of free or finitely generated nilpotent groups

In this paper we prove that certain generalized free products of abelian subgroup separable groups, amalgamating an infinite cyclic subgroup, are abelian subgroup separable. Applying this, we derive that tree products of free groups or finitely generated nilpotent groups, amalgamating infinite cyclic subgroups, are abelian subgroup separable.

Self Extending Rings

A ring R is an IPQ (isomorphic proper quotient)-ring if R ? R/A for every proper ideal A ? R. If every ideal A ? R satisfies: either R ? A or R ? R/A, then R is called an SE (self extending)-ring. It is shown that with one exception, an abelian group G is the additive group of an IPQ-ring if and only if G is the additive group of an SE-ring. The one exception is the infinite cyclic group Z. The zeroring with additive group Z is an SE-ring, but a ring with infinite cyclic additive group is not an IPQ-ring. Since the structure of the additive groups of IPQ-rings is known, the structure of the additive groups of SE-rings is completely determined.

Abelian Hermitian geometry

We study the structure of Lie groups admitting left invariant abelian complex structures in terms of commutative associative algebras. If, in addition, the Lie group is equipped with a left invariant Hermitian structure, it turns out that such a Hermitian structure is Kähler if and only if the Lie group is the direct product of several copies of the real hyperbolic plane by a Euclidean factor. Moreover, we show that if a left invariant Hermitian metric on a Lie group with an abelian complex structure has flat first canonical connection, then the Lie group is abelian.

二面体群D_2上Hopf路余代数的结构分类

本文研究了Hopf代数的构造问题.利用模范畴和箭图,获得了当G是二面体群D2这一4阶交换群时的Hopf路余代数kQc的同构分类及其子Hopf代数kG[kQ1]的结构,推广了当G是2阶循环群时的相应结论.     

Monochrome symmetric subsets of colored groups

In (Electron. J. Combin. 10 (2003); http://www.combinatorics.org/volume-10/Abstracts/v1oi1r28.html), the first author (Yuliya Gryshko) asked three questions. Is it true that every infinite group admitting a 2-coloring without infinite monochromatic symmetric subsets is either almost cyclic (i.e., have a finite index subgroup which is cyclic infinite) or countable locally finite? Does every infinite group G include a monochromatic symmetric subset of any cardinal <|G| for any finite coloring? Does every uncountable group G such that |B(G)|< |G| where B(G)={xG:x²=1}, admit a 2-coloring without monochromatic symmetric subsets of cardinality |G|? We answer the first question positively. Assuming the generalized continuum hypothesis (GCH), we give a positive answer to the second question in the abelian case. Finally, we build a counter-example for the third question and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for an infinite group G to admit 2-coloring without monochromatic symmetric subsets of cardinality |G|. This generalizes some results of Protasov on infinite abelian groups (Mat. Zametki 59 (1996) 468–471; Dopovidi NAN Ukrain 1 (1999) 54–57).     

Codes over Zm

In this paper we study cyclic codes inZ _m. i.e., ideals inZ _mG, G a finite abelian group, and we give a classification of such codes.We also study the minimum Hamming distance and the generalized Hamming weight of BCH codes overZ _m.     

Generalizing alternative rings

We give an example of two groups G and H, generated by 2 and 3 elements, which satisfy G × Z ? H × Z.The groups G, H are semi-direct products of a torsion-free abelian group of rank 3 by an infinite cyclic group.

Non-cancellation for certain classes of groups

For a certain class of groups, which are semidirect products arising from an action of a finite rank free abelian group on another group, we study cancellation of the infinite cyclic group in isomorphic direct products. As an application we obtain a sufficient condition for triviality of the genus of certain nilpotent groups.     

Retractability of set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

It is shown that square free set theoretic involutive non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation whose associated permutation group (referred to as an involutive Yang-Baxter group) is abelian are retractable in the sense of Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev. This solves a problem of Gateva-Ivanova in the case of abelian IYB groups. It also implies that the corresponding finitely presented abelian-by-finite groups (called the structure groups) are poly-Z groups. Secondly, an example of a solution with an abelian involutive Yang-Baxter group which is not a generalized twisted union is constructed. This answers in the negative another problem of Gateva-Ivanova. The constructed solution is of multipermutation level 3. Retractability of solutions is also proved in the case where the natural generators of the IYB group are cyclic permutations. Moreover, it is shown that such solutions are generalized twisted unions.

On the order of the unitary subgroup of a modular group algebra

Let KG be a group algebra of a finite p-group G over a finite field Kof characteristic p. We compute the order of the unitary subgroup of the group of units when G is either an extraspecial 2-group or the central product of such a group with a cyclic group of order 4 or G has an abelian subgroup A of index 2 and an element b such that b inverts each element of A.     

ESSENTIALLY FINITELY INDECOMPOSABLE ABELIAN p-GROUPS

Abstract

An abelian p-group C is said to be essentially finitely indecomposable (efi) if given any decomposition of G as the direct sum of a family of subgroups, there exists a positive integer n such that all but at moat a finite number of subgroups of this family are bounded by n. We look at examples and related questions. We prove that a reduced abelian p-group G is efi if and only if G modulo its elements of infinite height is efi. In the proof of this we obtain the following result which is of independent interest: Let A be a reduced p-group with a summand K such that K is a direct sum of cyclic groups. Let B be a basic subgroup of A. Then B contains a subgroup C such that C is a summand of A and the final rank of C is equal to the final rank of K.
