While many aspects of the teaching and learning of advanced mathematics have been explored, the role, construction, and values of homework have been virtually ignored. This report draws on task-based interviews with six mathematicians to explore the relationship between an instructor’s learning goals and factors considered when selecting homework problems. All participants viewed homework as critical to student learning, and the majority of the participants’ claims focused on either the mathematics or how the problem would help students learn; no instructor gave primacy to evaluative reasons for homework. We highlight six themes used by participants to evaluate and select items for inclusion in homework. They are (1) knowing and recalling axioms and definitions, (2) developing an arsenal of examples, (3) developing new problem approaches, (4) remediating misconceptions, (5) making connections to prior and future material, and (6) valuing reading notes or text.  相似文献

This paper discusses three alternative models for structuring homework assignments in college level mathematics. A distributive model which incorporates both early and late review of previously learned material into the daily assignment schedule is explicated in detail. The relative efficacy of the conventional method for assigning homework and the distributive method in promoting achievement and favourable attitudes toward mathematics in a first semester course in calculus was investigated in a controlled experiment. Significant (p < 0.03) interactions between mathematical ability and assignment model were found on three of four unit tests. In each case, pupils with the weaker pre‐calculus background profited more from the distributive assignment schedule. There were no significant interactions or differences on a comprehensive post‐test or on attitudes toward mathematics. Implications for research and practice in college level mathematics, physics, and engineering courses are suggested.  相似文献

Parents are a largely untapped resource for improving the mathematics performance of American children, which lags behind the performance of children from other nations. The purpose of the research reported here was to assess homework practices in the home, and to examine interactions between mothers and their 5th grade children as they worked challenging mathematics problems (pre-algebra equivalence problems). Results indicated that children spent on average 23 min per day on mathematics homework, with an average of 8 min of help from parents. Videotapes of mother-child interactions indicated that mothers varied considerably in the quality of the mathematics content that they conveyed while teaching, and in the quality of their scaffolding of the material for the child. As expected, mothers who themselves had more mathematics preparation performed better in conveying mathematical content and in scaffolding. Mothers with more mathematics self-confidence also performed better. The results suggest that children face inequities in the parental resources available to them for math learning; these inequities might be remedied by school-family partnership programs.  相似文献

Homework is one of students’ opportunities to learn mathematics, but we know little about what students learn from homework. This study employs the instructional triangle and didactic contract to explore how students used the ‘see similar example’ feature in an online homework platform and how that use reflected their learning goals. Findings indicate students used similar examples to troubleshoot, to check if they were on the right track, and to see the form of the answer. Students also sought to unpack the reasoning in solution steps, used solutions as templates for solving their own problems, and sometimes copied answers. One student did a ‘see similar example’ problem for more practice. Students’ goals included completing the homework, maximizing their score, and understanding the content. This research lays groundwork for future work characterizing what students learn from homework and how features that provide students with similar examples help or hinder their learning.  相似文献

In this paper we describe a method for teaching students to prove some mathematical statements independently, by using specially designed auxiliary assignments.
