针对在理解负折射率材料中光波的传播特性时相位的特殊性质 ,详细分析推证了负折射率介质中折射率、波矢k的大小和方向、空间坐标系以及波相相位互之间的关系。分析结果表明负折射率介质层中的波矢k的反常取向是由于其标量值为负 ;在统一的坐标系下 ,由该标量值参与数值计算和分析 ,k则由标量值和单位矢量k0 (k0 >0 )共同决定 ,而不必再考虑左、右手系的区别。在此基础上依据电磁场理论推导了光波在负折射率介质层中的传输矩阵 ,用以分析含有负折射率介质层的复杂薄膜系统的光学性质。初步计算结果显示含有负折射率介质层的膜系对TE和TM波的光谱特性都有显著改变 相似文献

A finite difference scheme with a uniform mesh for planar waveguides with arbitrary refractive index profiles that takes full account of any smooth index variation and index discontinuity is derived for TE and TM-polarized waves. Discretizations that lead to a second-order error in the effective indices are given for TE and TM polarizations. At the computational boundaries, transparent boundary conditions are used. The scheme was implemented for anisotropic waveguides with a diagonal permitivity tensor and examined by using samples with various refractive index profiles, ranging from simple step- and graded-index up to complicated refractive index profile structures composed of either isotropic or anisotropic materials. For simple cases where the results of other methods are available in the literature, the proposed scheme shows very good agreement. 相似文献

A theoretical model of the refractive index changes of the TE and TM modes in an electro-absorption modulator (EAM) is deduced. The photon absorption and refractive index changes are analyzed numerically. The influence of pump intensity on the phase difference between the TE and TM modes is studied. We propose a polarization splitter (PS) based on the slow light effect in a three-layer waveguide that consists of left-handed material (LHM) and dielectric layers with no birefringence. Transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves can be split by the intrinsic configuration of permittivity and permeability of LHM and dielectric layers. Simulation results are given to discuss the influence of electromagnetic parameters on the properties of our PS, and the capture and release of TE or TM waves are also realized in our PS which provides a flexible method to modulate the switching of different polarization waves. 相似文献

Resonant enhancement of electromagnetic waves propagating at oblique incidence in metamaterials, with dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability linearly changing from positive to negative values, has been predicted and theoretically studied. This effect occurs for both TE and TM polarizations near the point where a refractive index changes its sign. Our model elucidates the unique features of the resonant enhancement in "positive-to-negative transition" metamaterials for a broad frequency range from microwaves to optics. 相似文献

Band structures of one-dimensional(1D)photonic crystals(PCs)containing dispersive left-handed metamaterials are studied theoretically.The results show that the structure possesses a type of photonic band gap originating from total internal reflection(TIR).In contrast to photonic band gaps corresponding to zero average refractive index and zero phase.the TIR gap exhibits sharp angular effect and has no polarization effect.It should also be noted that band structures of transverse electric(TE) and transverse magnetic(TM) mode waves are exactly the same in the PCs we studied. 相似文献

This paper aims to study the general conditions under which omnidirectional band gaps (OBGs) are achieved by using heterostructure magnetic photonic crystals (HMPCs). These structures contain periodic layers with alternative dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The proposed design offers the stacking of two magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs), where one MPC has Brewster’s angle at TE polarization and another has the angle at TM polarization. The propagation of electromagnetic waves is investigated by means of the transfer matrix method. Also, the total reflection frequency range for any incident angle and polarization is discussed in this paper. As a conclusion, although each MPC has no OBG individually, the proposed HMPC may contain an OBG. The main advantage of the proposed design is that the obtained OBG is independent of the ambient media refractive index. Therefore, it can be used in engineering omnireflectors in integrated photonics. 相似文献

We investigate theoretically the creation conditions of TE and TM polarized surface waves created at the interface between a homogeneous medium and one dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC). The 1D PC is composed of uniaxially anisotropic left-handed (LH) and isotropic right-handed (RH) layers. We show that the characteristics of surface waves created in the 1D PC are significantly different from those created in the structure composed of isotropic LH and RH layers. We also prove that the coexistence of TE and TM surface waves at the interface is possible in the same frequency domain. Moreover, it is shown that in this structure backward and forward surface waves are created in wider ranges of frequency and angle of incident light, in comparison with the structure in which the left-handed layers are isotropic. 相似文献

Transmission characteristics of polarization-dependent refractometer based on a surface long-period grating (SLPG) inscribed in a D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) are investigated. The birefringence of SLPG produces the separation of transmission spectra for TE and TM polarization modes. We also measure the sensitivities of PCF-based SLPG to temperature and external refractive index change depending on the input polarization states. The SLPG-based sensor exhibits different temperature and ambient index sensitivities corresponding to TE and TM polarization modes. Therefore, the SLPG inscribed in D-shaped PCFs can effectively discriminate temperature and ambient index sensitivities. 相似文献
