We present a quantum-chemical analysis of the relationship between the bond length alteration (BLA) and the static first hyperpolarizability of a series of one-dimensional (1D) chromophores with donor-bridge-acceptor (D-B-A) structures. The calculated results show that the parameter BLA can be considered as an indicator to evaluate the molecular first hyper- polarizability. Along the direction of molecular ground-state dipole moments, the evolutions of BLA can be classified into three categories: the first is a non-monotonic line, which represents most chromophores; the second is monotonic increasing; and the third, contrarily, is monotonic decreasing. On the whole, the first hyperpolarizabilities of these studied chromophores are the monotonic functions of BLA along the direction of dipole moments. Therefore, the first hyperpolarizability of these 1D chromophores can be preliminarily evaluated in terms of the development of BLA without a rigorous computation. In other words, one can roughly estimate the relative magnitude of the first hyperpolarizability according to the optimized geometry.

The dynamic first hyperpolarizabilities of a series of 1,10-phenanthroline Ru(Ⅱ) complexes were carried out using density functional theory(DFT).The results indicate that these complexes have large second-order nonlinear optical(NLO) responses.Specially, complex 6b has a maximal first hyperpolarizability βtot value. The first hyperpolarizabilities can be tuned by changing the ancillary ligand, introducing electron-acceptor group NO2 and/or increasing π-conjugation on phenanthroline.Calculations on absorption spectra demonstrate that the second-order NLO responses of complexes in series a are ascribed to the intraligand charge transfer(ILCT),while the complexes in series b exhibit metal-to-ligand charge transfer(MLCT) and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer(LLCT) transition at relatively low-energy absorptions.

Novel chromophores Ch1–8 based verbenone bridge with various strong donors and acceptors were designed for applications in nonlinear optics, and the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of those verbenone-type chromophores were systematically investigated using the bond length alteration (BLA) theory, two states model (TSM) and sum-over-states (SOS) model. The results show that several verbenone-based chromophores possess remarkably large molecular second-order hyperpolarizabilities, which is due to its electron distribution close to the cyanine limit, the appropriate strength of acceptor, rather large change in dipole moment and low excitation energy. Computed hyperpolarizability (βtot) of Ch6 also approach an outstanding 2922 × 10−30 esu in TFE. The hyperpolarizability density analyses and two states model (TSM) were carried out to make a further insight into the origination of molecular nonlinearity of this unique system, suggesting that tuning structure of acceptor and polarity of the medium have great influence on the second-order nonlinear optical properties. More importantly, chromophores Ch1–Ch8 exhibited distinct features in two-dimensional second order NLO responses, and the strong electro-optical Pockels effect and optical rectification responses. The excellent electronic sum frequency generations (SFG) and difference frequency generations (DFG) effect are observed in these verbenone-type chromophores. These chromophores have a possibility to be appealing second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, data storage materials and DSSCs materials from the standpoint of large β values, high LHE, and excellent two-dimensional second order NLO responses.

The static and dynamic first hyperpolarizabilities for a series of substituted metallabenzene-based nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores were determined by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The electronic excitation contributions to the first hyperpolarizability are rationalized in terms of the two-level model. The effects on the hyperpolarizabilities of (a) the metal center (Os, Ir, Pt); (b) the ligand environment (PH3, CO, Cl); (c) various donor and acceptor substituents (NH2, OH, Me, H, Cl, Br, I, COOMe, COOH, CN, NO2); and (d) the length of pi-conjugation were studied. Our calculations predict that metallabenzenes have significant second-order NLO susceptibilities, ranging from = 1.0 x 10(-29) to 5.6 x 10(-28) esu and from mu = 3.0 x 10(-47) to 1.1 x 10(-44) esu, that can be tuned by changing the metal center and/or ligand environment.

A series of chromophoric salts has been prepared in which 4-(diphenylamino)phenyl (Dpap) electron donor groups are connected to electron-accepting diquaternized 2,2'-bipyridyl (diquat) units. The main aim is to combine large quadratic and cubic nonlinear optical (NLO) effects in potentially redox-switchable molecules with 2D structures. The chromophores have been characterized as their PF(6)(-) salts by using various techniques including electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The visible absorption spectra are dominated by intense π → π* intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) bands, and all of the compounds show two reversible or quasireversible diquat-based reductions and partially reversible Dpap oxidations. Single crystal X-ray structures have been obtained for one salt and for the precursor compound (E)-4-(diphenylamino)cinnamaldehyde, both of which adopt centrosymmetric space groups. First hyperpolarizabilities β have been measured by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) with a 800 nm laser, and Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopy of the ICT bands affords estimated static first hyperpolarizabilities β(0). The directly and indirectly derived β values are large and generally increased substantially for the bis-Dpap derivatives when compared with their monosubstituted analogues. Polarized HRS studies show that the NLO responses of the disubstituted species are dominated by "off-diagonal" β(zyy) components. Lengthening the diquaternizing alkyl unit lowers the electron-acceptor strength and therefore increases the ICT energies and decreases the E(1/2) values for diquat reduction. However, compensating increases in the ICT intensity prevent significant decreases in the Stark-based β(0) responses. Cubic NLO properties have been measured by using the Z-scan technique over a wavelength range of 520-1600 nm, revealing relatively high two-photon absorption cross-sections of up to 730 GM at 620 nm for one of the disubstituted chromophores.

In this work, we report an ab initio investigation of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and absorption electronic spectra of push-pull transition metal chromophores of the formula [M(CO)(5)L] (M = Cr, W; L = pyridine (Py), 4-formyl-pyridine (PyCHO), pyrazine (Pyz), trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPE)). Pyz and BPE are considered either with one nitrogen atom free or interacting with the strong acceptor BF(3). All of the molecular properties have been calculated using two different and methodologically independent approaches: the time dependent and coupled perturbed density functional theories (TDDFT and CPDFT) and the sum-over-states (SOS) approach, where the excited states are obtained via the single configuration interaction (SCI) ab initio method. DFT results are in acceptable agreement with the experimental energy values of electronic transitions (with the exception of chromophores with the large pi-delocalization, like BPE); SCI calculations overestimate excitation energies and produce an inversion in the order of d(M) --> pi(L) and d(M) --> pi(CO) transitions. The SCI-SOS approach gives first-order hyperpolarizabilities, basically in agreement as trend and values with the experiments and seems to be a tool generally suitable for the evaluation of these properties also for transition metal complexes. On the other hand, the first-order hyperpolarizabilities computed using the CPDFT approach are consistently overestimated in comparison with the experimental results, especially in the case of a ligand with large pi-delocalization. We also show that the "two-level" approximation taking into account only the lowest energy charge transfer excitation (e.g., d(M) --> pi(L)) is not applicable to chromophores with the extended pi-delocalized ligand (BPE) coordinated to a transition metal, due to significant contributions originating from intraligand pi(L) --> pi(L) transitions. This study reports a detailed analysis and comparison of electronic NLO effects of transition metal complexes computed with DFT and ab initio SCI-SOS methodology.

Six new nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores with pyrazinyl-pyridinium electron acceptors have been synthesized by complexing a known pro-ligand with electron donating {Ru(II)(NH(3))(5)}(2+) or trans-{Ru(II)(NH(3))(4)(py)}(2+) (py = pyridine) centers. These cationic complexes have been characterized as their PF(6)(-) salts by using various techniques including electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The visible d → π* metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) absorptions gain intensity on increasing the number of Ru(II) centers from one to two, but remain at constant energy. One or two Ru(III/II) redox processes are observed which are reversible, quasi-reversible, or irreversible, while all of the ligand-based reductions are irreversible. Molecular first hyperpolarizabilities β have been determined by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) at 1064 nm, and depolarization studies show that the NLO responses of the symmetric species are strongly two-dimensional (2D) in character, with dominant "off-diagonal" β(zyy) components. Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopic measurements on the MLCT bands also allow the indirect determination of estimated static first hyperpolarizabilities β(0). Both the HRS and the Stark-derived β(0) values increase on moving from mono- to bimetallic complexes, and substantial enhancements in NLO response are achieved when compared with one-dimensional (1D) and 2D monometallic Ru(II) ammine complexes reported previously.

To probe the cooperativity of charge transfer between organoimido and hexamolybdate, and enhance the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response of organoimido derivatives of hexamolybdates, electronic structures and second-order NLO properties of a series of charge-transfer covalently bonded organoimido derived hexamolybdate complexes with donor-(π conjugated bridge)-acceptor-(π conjugated bridge)-donor or acceptor-(π conjugated bridge)-donor-(π conjugated bridge)-acceptor structures were studied by density functional theory. Studies show that different combinations of the donor, acceptor, heterocycle, –C≡C– and –N=N– moieties, and orientation of heterocycle remarkably affect the second-order NLO responses. The complexes containing electronic acceptor matched with the direction of charge transfer possess remarkable large molecular second-order polarizabilities. Electronic transitions to crucial excited states show that x-polarized transition, contributed to the off-diagonal second-order polarizabiliy tensor (βzxx), possesses lower excited energy compared with z-polarized transition which accounted for the diagonal second-order polarizabiliy tensor (βzzz) and thus led to the large in-plane nonlinear anisotropy (= βzxxzzz) value, as well as good two-dimensional (2-D) second-order NLO properties. These complexes can be used as excellent 2-D second-order NLO materials from the standpoint of both large β and u values.

Two nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores C1 and C2 based on dithienylethene were designed and synthesized as the ultraviolet NLO switches. The open/close behavior of C1 and C2 were investigated through the UV–vis spectra. Through quantum chemical calculations of the dipole moments, first and second hyperpolarizabilities, etc. we analyzed both opening and closure states of C1 and C2. The NLO switch ability of the chromophores were studied through monitoring of the SHG at the opening/closure states, which were performed under illumination of fourth harmonic generation of the nanosecond Nd:YAG laser (λ?=?266?nm). The obtained results indicated that the maximal SHG changes were observed at energy density equal to about 90?J/m2, and the samples C1, 2′ closure states possess significantly higher value of the second order susceptibility compared to the opening states. After switching off of the external UV light, the induced second order susceptibilities remain up to 150?h without a decrease, which indicated that the obtained chromophores have the potential application as the NLO switches applied in photonics.

Two series of matched and mismatched donor–thiazole–acceptor chromophores have been synthesized to disclose the role that the orientation of the thiazole ring plays on their second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Whereas previous theoretical studies predict that the matched systems show markedly higher NLO responses, our experimental results do not parallel this trend, showing differences between regioisomers much lower than those predicted.

2-Aryl-1-phenyl-5-styrylphospholes were prepared in good yields in a one-pot procedure from the corresponding 1,9-diarylnona-8-ene-1,6-diynes and dichloro(phenyl)phosphine via intermediary titanacyclopentadienes. According to the UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of this class of compounds, the optical properties of the phosphole-vinylene-bridged pi-conjugated system have been revealed to depend strongly on the electronic character of the terminal functionalities. In particular, the polarizability at the excited-state has been found to be considerably greater than that in the ground state. High molecular hyperpolarizabilities obtained for the push-pull type of 2-aryl-5-styrylphospholes in the hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements demonstrate the potential utility of the stilbene-type phosphole derivatives as a new class of second-order NLO chromophores.

We present a comparative study of the metal-metal interaction effect on the static quadratic hyperpolarizabilities of two typical dinuclear rhenium clusters. The electronic structures, excitation spectra, dipolar moments, static polarizabilities, and quadratic hyperpolarizabilities of the two complexes with direct metal-metal interactions have been computed and analyzed with the use of high-level DFT/TDDFT methods. The geometries and the first intense excitations agree with the relevant reported measurements. The orbital decomposition scheme ( J. Phys. Chem. A 2006, 110, 1014-1021) has been applied to analyze the relationship between the electronic structures and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of these two complexes. We propose an unprecedented NLO response mechanism featuring the contribution of the direct metal-metal interaction transition process in these dinuclear rhenium complexes. This contribution positively enhances the quadratic hyperpolarizability and relates to the intensity of the metal-metal interactions of the complexes. The results are helpful to the development of NLO chromophores in polynuclear metal clusters through the molecular design technique.

Six new dicationic 2D nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores with pyrazinyl-pyridinium electron acceptors have been synthesized by nucleophilic substitutions of 2,6-dichloropyrazine with pyridyl derivatives. These compounds have been characterized as their PF(6)(-) salts by using various techniques including electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Large red shifts in the intense, π → π* intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) transitions on replacing -OMe with -NMe(2) substituents arise from the stronger π-electron donor ability of the latter. Each compound shows a number of redox processes which are largely irreversible. Single crystal X-ray structures have been determined for five salts, including two nitrates, all of which adopt centrosymmetric packing arrangements. Molecular first hyperpolarizabilities β have been determined by using femtosecond hyper-Rayleigh scattering at 880 and 800 nm, and depolarization studies show that the NLO responses of the symmetric species are strongly 2D, with dominant "off-diagonal" β(zyy) components. Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopic measurements on the ICT bands afford estimated static first hyperpolarizabilities β(0). The directly and indirectly derived β values are large, and the Stark-derived β(0) response for one of the new salts is several times greater than that determined for (E)-4'-(dimethylamino)-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium hexafluorophosphate. These Stark spectroscopic studies also permit quantitative comparisons with related 2D, binuclear Ru(II) ammine complex salts.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out to investigate the switching of the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of η(5)-monocyclopentadienyliron(II) and ruthenium(II) model complexes presenting 5-(3-(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c]thiophen-1-yl)thiophene-2-carbonitrile as a ligand. The switching properties were induced by redox means. Both oxidation and reduction stimulus have been considered, and calculations have been performed both for the complexes and for the free benzo[c]thiophene derivative ligand in order to elucidate the role played by the organometallic fragment on the second-order NLO properties of these complexes. B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, and M06 functionals were used for our calculations. The results show some important structural changes upon oxidation/reduction that are accompanied by significant differences on the corresponding second-order NLO properties. TD-DFT calculations show that these differences on the second-order NLO response upon oxidation/reduction are due to a change in the charge transfer pattern, in which the organometallic iron and ruthenium moieties play an important role. The calculated static hyperpolarizabilities were found to be strongly functional dependent. CAM-B3LYP, however, seems to predict more reliable structural and optical data as well as hyperpolarizabilities when compared to experimental data. The use of this functional predicts that the studied complexes can be viewed as acting as redox second-order NLO switches, in particular using oxidation stimulus. The β(tot) value of one-electron oxidized species is at least ~8.3 times (for Ru complex) and ~5.5 times (for Fe complex) as large as that of its nonoxidized counterparts.

The optical transmission spectral study of a dinuclear metal complex [FeL(MeOH)Cl]2 (L=N-(5-methylphenyl)-3-methoxysalicylaldimine) has been carried out. The linear optical characterization shows that this molecule has transparency in the visible range. To understand linear optical and microscopic second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of the compound, we have computed the electric dipole moment (mu) and dispersion-free first hyperpolarizabilities (beta) using Finite Field second-order M?ller-Plesset perturbation (FF MP2) procedure; and also dispersion-free linear polarizabilities (alpha), frequency-dependent linear polarizabilities within the linear optical spectrum and first hyperpolarizabilities at lambda=730-1050 and 1000-1400 nm wavelength areas using time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method. The ab-initio calculation results reveal that the examined complex might have linear optical and microscopic NLO behavior with non-zero values.

The synthesis and full characterization of new chromophores with second-order nonlinearities containing thienylpyrrolyl and benzothiazolyl moieties are reported. The solvatochromic behavior of the compounds was investigated. The hyperpolarizabilities β of derivatives 4-6 were measured using hyper-Rayleigh scattering and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to evaluate their thermal stability. The experimental results indicate that strong nonlinearity is balanced by good thermal stability especially for chromophores 6b and 6c, making them good candidates for NLO applications.

In this work, we report a theoretical exploration of the responses of organic azobenzene dendrimers. The polarizabilities, the first and second hyperpolarizabilities of the azobenzene monomers (GO), and the first, second and third generation (G1, G2 and G3, respectively) are investigated by semi-empirical methods. The calculated results show that the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of these organic dendrimers are mainly determined by the azobenzene chromospheres. Additionally, the values oft and y increase almost in proportion to the number of chromophores. On the other hand, two types of transition metal hybrid azobenzene dendrimers (core-hybrid and branch-end hybrid according to the sites combined with transition metals) are simulated and discussed in detail in the framework of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The calculated results reveal that the NLO responses of these metal dendrimers distinctly varied as a result of altering the charge transfer transition scale and the excitation energies.
