We have used ultrafast time-resolved photoelectron imaging to measure charge transfer dynamics in iodide-doped acetonitrile clusters I(-)(CH(3)CN)(n) with n = 5-10. Strong modulations of vertical detachment energies were observed following charge transfer from the halide, allowing interpretation of the ongoing dynamics. We observe a sharp drop in the vertical detachment energy (VDE) within 300-400 fs, followed by a biexponential increase that is complete by approximately 10 ps. Comparison to theory suggests that the iodide is internally solvated and that photodetachment results in formation of a diffuse electron cloud in a confined cavity. We interpret the initial drop in VDE as a combination of expansion of the cavity and localization of the excess electron on one or two solvent molecules. The subsequent increase in VDE is attributed to a combination of the I atom leaving the cavity and rearrangement of the acetonitrile molecules to solvate the electron. The n = 5-8 clusters then show a drop in VDE of around 50 meV on a much longer time scale. The long-time VDEs are consistent with those of (CH(3)CN)(n)(-) clusters with internally solvated electrons. Although the excited-state created by the pump pulse decays by emission of a slow electron, no such decay is seen by 200 ps.  相似文献

Two new classes of (HCN)(n)...Li and Li...(HCN)(n) (n = 1, 2, 3) clusters with the electride characteristic are formed in theory by the metal Li atom attaching to the (HCN)(n) (n = 1, 2, 3) clusters. Because of the interaction between the Li atom and the (HCN)(n) part, the 2s valence electron of the Li atom becomes a loosely bound excess electron. Our high-level ab initio calculations show that these new clusters with the excess electron have large first hyperpolarizabilities, for example, beta(0) = -15,258 au for (HCN)...Li and beta(0) = -3401 au for Li...(HCN) at the QCISD/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level (only beta(0) = -2.8 au for HCN monomer(26)). Obviously, the excess electron from the Li atom plays a crucial role in the large first hyperpolarizabilities of these clusters. The beta(0) value of (HCN)(n)...Li (beta(0) > 10(4) au, from sigma --> pi* transition) is larger than that of Li...(HCN)(n) (beta(0) > 10(3) au, from sigma --> sigma* transition) for n = 1, 2, or 3. In addition, two interesting rules have been observed. They are that |beta(0)| decreases with lengthening of the HCN chain for (HCN)(n)...Li clusters and that |beta(0)| increases as n increases for Li...(HCN)(n) clusters. In this paper, we discuss two classes of clusters that are highly similar to the electride structure model, of which the structural characteristics are that alkali metal atoms ionize to form cations and trapped electrons under the action of other polar molecules. Thus, the investigation on the large first hyperpolarizabilities of (HCN)(n)...Li and Li...(HCN)(n) (n = 1, 2, 3) may prompt one to study the unusual nonlinear optical responses of some electrides.  相似文献

We report vertical detachment energy (VDE) and IR spectra of Br2.-.(H2O)n clusters (n=1-8) based on first principles electronic structure calculations. Cluster structures and IR spectra are calculated at Becke's half-and-half hybrid exchange-correlation functional (BHHLYP) with a triple split valence basis function, 6-311++G(d,p). VDE for the hydrated clusters is calculated based on second order Moller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory with the same set of basis function. On full geometry optimization, it is observed that conformers having interwater hydrogen bonding among solvent water molecules are more stable than the structures having double or single hydrogen bonded structures between the anionic solute, Br2.-, and solvent water molecules. Moreover, a conformer having cyclic interwater hydrogen bonded network is predicted to be more stable for each size hydrated cluster. It is also noticed that up to four solvent H2O units can reside around the solute in a cyclic interwater hydrogen bonded network. The excess electron in these hydrated clusters is localized over the solute atoms. Weighted average VDE is calculated for each size (n) cluster based on statistical population of the conformers at 150 K. A linear relationship is obtained for VDE versus (n+3)(-1/3) and bulk VDE of Br2.- aqueous solution is calculated as 10.01 eV at MP2 level of theory. BHHLYP density functional is seen to make a systematic overestimation in VDE values by approximately 0.5 eV compared to MP2 data in all the hydrated clusters. It is observed that hydration increases VDE of bromine dimer anion system by approximately 6.4 eV. Calculated IR spectra show that the formation of Br2.--water clusters induces large shifts from the normal O-H stretching bands of isolated water keeping bending modes rather insensitive. Hydrated clusters, Br2.-.(H2O)n, show characteristic sharp features of O-H stretching bands of water in the small size clusters.  相似文献

The 4s and 5s Rydberg excited states of NaAr(n)* clusters are investigated using a pseudopotential quantum-classical method. While NaAr(n) clusters in their ground state are known to be weakly bound van der Waals complexes with Na lying at the surface of the argon cluster, isomers in 4s or 5s electronically excited states of small NaAr(n)* clusters (n< or =10) are found to be stable versus dissociation. The relationship between electronic excitation and cluster geometry is analyzed as a function of cluster size. For both 4s and 5s states, the stable exciplex isomers essentially appear as sodium-centered structures with similar topologies, converging towards those of the related NaAr(n)+ positive ions when the excitation level is increased. This is consistent with a Rydberg-type picture for the electronically excited cluster, described by a central sodium ion solvated by an argon shell, and an outer diffuse electron orbiting around this NaAr(n)+ cluster core.  相似文献

Electron solvation in methanol anion clusters, (MeOH)(n) (-) (n approximately 70-460), is studied by photoelectron imaging. Two isomers are observed: methanol I, with vertical binding energies (VBE) ranging from 2-2.5 eV, and methanol II, with much lower VBE's between 0.2 and 0.5 eV. The VBE's of the two isomers depend linearly on n(-1/3) with nearly identical slopes. We propose that the excess electron is internally solvated in methanol I clusters, whereas in methanol II it resides in a dipole-bound surface-state. Evidence of an excited state accessible at 1.55 eV is observed for methanol I.  相似文献

Infrared photodissociation spectra of Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n) (n = 1-4) and Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n)-Ar (n = 1-3) were measured in the OH stretching region, 3000-3800 cm(-1). For n = 1 and 2, sharp absorption bands were observed in the free OH stretching region, all of which were well reproduced by the spectra calculated for the solvated-type geometry with no hydrogen bond. For n = 3 and 4, there were broad vibrational bands in the energy region of hydrogen-bonded OH stretching vibrations, 3000-3500 cm(-1). Energies of possible isomers for the Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(3),4 ions with hydrogen bonds were calculated in order to assign these bands. It was found that the third and fourth methanol molecules form hydrogen bonds with methanol molecules in the first solvation shell, rather than a direct bonding with the Al(+) ion. For the Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n) clusters with n = 1-4, we obtained no evidence of the insertion reaction, which occurs in Al(+)(H(2)O)(n). One possible explanation of the difference between these two systems is that the potential energy barriers between the solvated and inserted isomers in the Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n) system is too high to form the inserted-type isomers.  相似文献

The dynamics of charge-transfer-to-solvent states are studied in I- (H2O)(n=3-10) clusters and their deuterated counterparts using time-resolved photoelectron imaging. The photoelectron spectra for clusters with n > or = 5 reveal multiple time scales for dynamics after their electronic excitation. An increase in the vertical detachment energy (VDE) by several hundred millielectronvolts on a time scale of approximately 1 ps is attributed to stabilization of the excess electron, primarily through rearrangement of the solvent molecules, but a contribution to this stabilization from motion of the I atom cannot be ruled out. The VDE drops by approximately 50 meV on a time scale of tens of picoseconds; this is attributed to loss of the neutral iodine atom. Finally, the pump-probe signal decays with a time constant of 60 ps-3 ns, increasing with cluster size. This decay is commensurate with the growth of very slow electrons and is attributed to autodetachment. Smaller clusters (n = 3, 4) display simpler dynamics. Anisotropy parameters are reported for clusters n = 4-9.  相似文献

We present benchmark calculations of vertical electron detachment energies (VDEs) for various conformers of (H2O)n-, using both wave function and density functional methods, in sequences of increasingly diffuse Gaussian basis sets. For small clusters (n < or = 6), a systematic examination of VDE convergence reveals that it is possible to converge this quantity to within approximately 0.01 eV of the complete-basis limit, using a highly diffuse but otherwise economical Pople-style basis set of double-zeta quality, with 28 atom-centered basis functions per water molecule. Floating-center basis functions can be useful but are not required to obtain accurate VDEs. Second-order M?ller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory suffices to obtain VDEs that are within 0.05 eV of the results from both experiment and coupled-cluster theory, and which always err toward underbinding the extra electron. In contrast to these consistent predictions, VDEs calculated using density functional theory (DFT) vary widely, according to the fraction of Hartree-Fock exchange in a given functional. Common functionals such as BLYP and B3LYP overestimate the VDE by 0.2-0.5 eV, whereas a variant of Becke's "half and half" functional is much closer to coupled-cluster predictions. Exploratory calculations for (H2O)20- and (H2O)24- cast considerable doubt on earlier calculations that were used to assign the photoelectron spectra of these species to particular cluster isomers.  相似文献

The dipole polarizabilities of Co(n)Bz(m), (n, m = 1-4, m = n, n + 1) clusters are studied by means of an all-electron gradient-corrected density functional theory and finite field method. The dipole moments are relatively large for most of the clusters, implying their asymmetric structures. The total polarizability increases rapidly as cluster size, whereas the average polarizability shows "odd-even" oscillation with relatively large values at (n, n + 1). The polarizabilities exhibit clear shape-dependent variation, and the sandwich structures have systematically larger polarizability and anisotropy than the rice-ball isomers. The dipole polarizabilities are further analyzed in terms of the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gap, ionization potential, and electron delocalization volume. We conclude that the polarizability variations are determined by the interplay between the geometrical and electronic properties of the clusters.  相似文献

At the level of MP2 with the aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets supplemented with diffuse bond functions, the authors searched the potential energy surfaces of (HF)(n) (-) (n=3-6). In accordance with the literature, they found that the symmetrically solvated-electron anion (3(FH){e}) possesses the largest vertical detachment energy (VDE), while the dipole-bound anion ((FH)(3){e}) is the lowest isomer in energy for (HF)(3) (-). Their calculations demonstrated that, with the increase of the cluster size, the asymmetric (FH)(a){e}(HF)(b) cluster is stabilized with a simultaneously increased VDE. Thus they predicted that, for (HF)(6) (-), the (FH)(4){e}(HF)(2) cluster is both kinetically and thermodynamically most stable, possessing the largest VDE and being the global minimum at the same time.  相似文献

The photoelectron images of Ag(-)(H(2)O)(x) (x=1,2) and AgOH(-)(H(2)O)(y) (y=0-4) are reported. The Ag(-)(H(2)O)(1,2) anionic complexes have similar characteristics to the other two coinage metal-water complexes that can be characterized as metal atomic anion solvated by water molecules with the electron mainly localized on the metal. The vibrationally well-resolved photoelectron spectrum allows the adiabatic detachment energy (ADE) and vertical detachment energy (VDE) of AgOH(-) to be determined as 1.18(2) and 1.24(2) eV, respectively. The AgOH(-) anion interacts more strongly with water molecules than the Ag(-) anion. The photoelectron spectra of Ag(-)(H(2)O)(x) and AgOH(-)(H(2)O)(y) show a gradual increase in ADE and VDE with increasing x and y due to the solvent stabilization.  相似文献

Alkali metal ammonia clusters, in their cationic, neutral, and anionic form, are molecular models for the alkali-ammonia solutions, which have rich variation of phases with the solvated electrons playing an important role. With two s electrons, the Na(-)(NH(3))(n) and Li(-)(NH(3))(n) clusters are unique in that they capture the important aspect of the coupling between two solvated electrons. By first principles calculations, we demonstrate that the two electrons are detached from the metal by n = 10, which produces a cluster with a solvated electron pair in the vicinity of a solvated alkali cation. The coupling of the two electrons leads to either the singlet or triplet state, both of which are stable. They are also quite distinct from the hydrated anionic clusters Na(-)(H(2)O)(n) and Li(-)(H(2)O)(n), in that the solvated electrons are delocalized and widely distributed among the solvent ammonia molecules. The Na(-)(NH(3))(n) and Li(-)(NH(3))(n) series, therefore, provide another interesting type of molecular model for the investigation of solvated electron pairs.  相似文献

The GeH(n) (n = 0-4) and Ge(2)H(n) (n = 0-6) systems have been studied systematically by five different density functional methods. The basis sets employed are of double-zeta plus polarization quality with additional s- and p-type diffuse functions, labeled DZP++. For each compound plausible energetically low-lying structures were optimized. The methods used have been calibrated against a comprehensive tabulation of experimental electron affinities (Chemical Reviews 102, 231, 2002). The geometries predicted in this work include yet unknown anionic species, such as Ge(2)H(-), Ge(2)H(2)(-), Ge(2)H(3)(-), Ge(2)H(4)(-), and Ge(2)H(5)(-). In general, the BHLYP method predicts the geometries closest to the few available experimental structures. A number of structures rather different from the analogous well-characterized hydrocarbon radicals and anions are predicted. For example, a vinylidene-like GeGeH(2) (-) structure is the global minimum of Ge(2)H(2) (-). For neutral Ge(2)H(4), a methylcarbene-like HG?-GeH(3) is neally degenerate with the trans-bent H(2)Ge=GeH(2) structure. For the Ge(2)H(4) (-) anion, the methylcarbene-like system is the global minimum. The three different neutral-anion energy differences reported in this research are: the adiabatic electron affinity (EA(ad)), the vertical electron affinity (EA(vert)), and the vertical detachment energy (VDE). For this family of molecules the B3LYP method appears to predict the most reliable electron affinities. The adiabatic electron affinities after the ZPVE correction are predicted to be 2.02 (Ge(2)), 2.05 (Ge(2)H), 1.25 (Ge(2)H(2)), 2.09 (Ge(2)H(3)), 1.71 (Ge(2)H(4)), 2.17 (Ge(2)H(5)), and -0.02 (Ge(2)H(6)) eV. We also reported the dissociation energies for the GeH(n) (n = 1-4) and Ge(2)H(n) (n = 1-6) systems, as well as those for their anionic counterparts. Our theoretical predictions provide strong motivation for the further experimental study of these important germanium hydrides.  相似文献

We report conformationally averaged VDEs (VDE(w)(n)) for different sizes of NO(3)(-)·nH(2)O clusters calculated by using uncorrelated HF, correlated hybrid density functional (B3LYP, BHHLYP) and correlated ab intio (MP2 and CCSD(T)) theory. It is observed that the VDE(w)(n) at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p), B3LYP/Aug-cc-Pvtz and CCSD(T)/6-311++G(d,p) levels is very close to the experimentally measured VDE. It is shown that the use of calculated results of the conformationally averaged VDE for small-sized solvated negatively-charged clusters and a microscopic theory-based general expression for the same provides a route to obtain the VDE for a wide range of cluster sizes, including bulk.  相似文献

The isomers of (H(2)O)(24) (-) tetrakaidecahedral cluster are studied by applying the Becke-3-parameter density functional theory and Lee-Yang-Parr correlation functional (B3LYP) and 6-311++G** basis set. Three isomers are selected on the basis of stabilization energy values. The vertical electron dissociation energies (VDE) of these isomers are 1.353, 0.404, and 0.258 eV, respectively. The experimental VDE value of 1.31 eV [J. Chem. Phys. 92, 3980 (1990)] for this cluster size is in excellent agreement with that calculated for isomer 1, suggesting the dominance of this isomer in the experiment. Four water molecules in this isomer share most of the -1 charge. These four water molecules have non-H-bonding H (NHB H) atoms turned toward the cavity, and the inward turned H atoms exhibit a significant lowering of O-H stretch frequency compared to that of a monomer. Isomers 2 and 3 have all 12 NHB H atoms projected outward and have the -1 charge distributed among 7-8 water molecules on the cluster surface.  相似文献

The molecular structures, electron affinities, and dissociation energies of the Si(5)H(n)/Si(5)H(n)(-) (n = 3-12) species have been calculated by means of three density functional theory (DFT) methods. The basis set used in this work is of double-zeta plus polarization quality with additional diffuse s- and p-type functions, denoted DZP++. The geometries are fully optimized with each DFT method independently. Three different types of the neutral-anion energy separations presented in this work are the adiabatic electron affinity (EA(ad)), the vertical electron affinity (EA(vert)), and the vertical detachment energy (VDE). The first Si-H dissociation energies for neutral Si(5)H(n) and its anion have also been reported.  相似文献

The vertical electron detachment energies (VDEs) of 30 MX 4 (-) (M = B, Al; X = F, Cl, Br) anions were calculated at the OVGF level with the 6-311+G(3df) basis sets. The largest vertical electron binding energy was found for the AlF 4 (-) system (9.789 eV). The strong VDE dependence on the symmetry of the species, ligand type, ligand-central atom distance, and bonding/nonbonding/antibonding character of the highest occupied molecular orbital was observed and discussed.  相似文献

Benzene clusters are generated by pulsed supersonic beam expansion, ionized by electron impact, mass-selected and then injected into a drift cell for ion mobility measurements in a helium buffer gas. The measured collision cross sections and theoretical calculations are used to determine the structures of the cluster cations (C(6)H(6))(n)(+) with n = 2-6. Density functional theory calculation, at an all-electron level and without any symmetry constraint, predicts that the dimer cation has two nearly degenerate ground state structures with the sandwich configuration more stable than the T-configuration by only 0.07 eV. The ion mobility experiment indicates that only one structure is observed for the mass-selected dimer cation at room temperature. The calculated cross section for the sandwich structure agrees very well (within 2.4%) with the experimental value. For the n = 3-6 clusters, the experiments suggest the presence of at least two structural isomers for each cluster. A Monte Carlo minimum-energy search technique using the 12-site OPLS potential for benzene is used to determine the structures of the lowest-energy isomers. The calculated cross sections for the two lowest-energy isomers of the n = 3-6 clusters agree well with the experimental results. The clusters' structures reveal two different growth patterns involving a sandwich dimer core or a pancake trimer stack core. The lowest-energy isomers of the n = 3-6 clusters incorporate the pancake trimer stack as the cluster's core. The trimer stack allows the charge to hop between two dimers, thus maximizing charge resonance interaction in the clusters. For larger clusters, the appearance of magic numbers at n = 14, 20, 24, 27, and 30 is consistent with the incorporation of a sandwich dimer cation within icosahedral, double icosahedral, and interpenetrating icosahedral structures. On the basis of the ion mobility results and the structural calculations, the parallel-stacked motif among charged aromatic-aromatic interactions is expected to play a major role in determining the structures of multi aromatic components. This conclusion may provide new insights for experimental and theoretical studies of molecular design and recognition involving aromatic systems.  相似文献

The molecular structures of neutral Si n Li ( n = 2-8) species and their anions have been studied by means of the higher level of the Gaussian-3 (G3) techniques. The lowest energy structures of these clusters have been reported. The ground-state structures of neutral clusters are "attaching structures", in which the Li atom is bound to Si n clusters. The ground-state geometries of anions, however, are "substitutional structures", which is derived from Si n+1 by replacing a Si atom with a Li (-). The electron affinities of Si n Li and Si n have been presented. The theoretical electron affinities of Si n are in good agreement with the experiment data. The reliable electron affinities of Si n Li are predicted to be 1.87 eV for Si 2Li, 2.06 eV for Si 3Li, 2.01 eV for Si 4Li, 2.61 eV for Si 5Li, 2.36 eV for Si 6Li, 2.21 eV for Si 7Li, and 3.18 eV for Si 8Li. The dissociation energies of Li atom from the lowest energy structures of Si n Li and Si atom from Si n clusters have also been estimated respectively to examine relative stabilities.  相似文献
