Electrooxidation of methanol on upd-Ru and upd-Sn modified Pt electrodes
The electrochemical oxidation of methanol has been investigated on underpotentially deposited-ruthenium-modified platinum electrode (upd-Ru/Pt) and on underpotentially deposited-tin-modified platinum electrode (upd-Sn/Pt). The submonolayers of upd-Ru and upd-Sn on a Pt electrode increased the rate of methanol electrooxidation several times as large as that on a pure Pt electrode. The best performance for methanol electrooxidation was obtained on a ternary platinum based catalyst modified by upd-Ru and upd-Sn simultaneously. The influence of the submonolayers of upd-Ru adatoms and upd-Sn adatoms on the oxidation of methanol in acid has been investigated. The effect of Ru on methanol electrooxidation lies on the distribution of Ru adatoms on a Pt surface. It has been shown that as long as the amount of upd-Ru deposits were controlled in a proper range, upd-Ru deposits would enhance the methanol oxidation obtained on a Pt electrode at whichever deposition potential the upd-Ru deposits were obtained. The effects of tin are sensible to the potential range. The enhancement effect of upd-Sn adatoms for the oxidation of methanol will disappear as the electrode potential is beyond a certain value. It is speculated that there exists a synergetic effect on the Pt electrode as adatoms Ru and Sn participate simultaneously in the methanol oxidation.

Electrolytically deposited Ni on polyaniline film covered carbon paste electrode (Ni/PANI/CPE) was used as anode for the electrooxidation of methanol in alkaline medium. The electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic activity of the electrode were studied using cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, chronomethods, and polarization studies. The morphology and composition of the modified film were obtained using scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray analysis techniques. The electrooxidation of methanol in NaOH was found to be more efficient on Ni/PANI/CPE than on bare Ni, electrodeposited Ni on Pt, Ni on glassy carbon, and Ni on CPE substrates. Partial chemical displacement of dispersed Ni on PANI with Pt or Pd further improved its performance towards methanol oxidation.

An electrochemical approach to fabricate a nanostructured Fe/Pt-Fe catalyst through electrodeposition followed by galvanic replacement is presented. An Fe/Pt-Fe nanostructured electrode was prepared by deposition of Fe-Zn onto a Fe electrode surface, followed by replacement of the Zn by Pt at open-circuit potential in a Pt-containing alkaline solution. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray techniques reveal that the Fe/Pt-Fe electrode is porous and contains Pt. The electrocatalytic activity of the Fe/Pt-Fe electrode for oxidation of methanol was examined by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The electrooxidation current on the Fe/Pt-Fe catalyst is much higher than that on flat Pt and smooth Fe catalysts. The onset potential and peak potential on the Fe/Pt-Fe catalyst are more negative than those on flat Pt and smooth Fe electrodes for methanol electrooxidation. All results show that this nanostructured Fe/Pt-Fe electrode is very attractive for integrated fuel cell applications in alkaline media.

The catalytic behavior of stainless steel (SS) electrode modified by a thin film of polyaniline (PANI) containing platinum particles was studied for electrooxidation of methanol and compared with a platinated Pt/PANI electrode in acidic aqueous solution. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry, CO stripping techniques were used to investigate electrochemical properties and electrocatalytic activity of SS/PANI/Pt and Pt/PANI/Pt electrodes. The morphology and particle size of Pt catalysts were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurement. The effects of various parameters such as thickness of polymer film, medium temperature and stability of the modified electrodes on methanol oxidation were also investigated. The results indicated that the modified SS electrode exhibited a considerably high electrocatalytic activity on the methanol oxidation as well as the modified Pt electrode.

Platinum catalysts play a major role in the large scale commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells(DMFC). Here, we present a procedure to create a nanostructural graphene-platinum(Gr Pt) composite containing a small amount(5.3 wt%) of platinum nanoparticles coated with at least four layers of graphene. The composite, as Gr Pt ink, was deposited on a glassy carbon electrode and its electrocatalytic activity in a methanol oxidation reaction(MOR) was evaluated in a 1 M CH_3 OH/1 M Na OH solution. The results indicated an enhanced catalytic performance of Gr Pt towards MOR in alkaline media compared with the Pt/C material. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(recorded before and after the electrochemical assays) were employed to analyze the changes in the chemical composition of the nanomaterial and to explain the transformations that took place at the electrode surface.Our findings suggest that growing of graphene on platinum nanoparticles improve the catalytic performance of platinum-graphene composites towards MOR in alkaline media.

Poly(isonicotinic acid) (PINA) was formed by successive cyclic voltammetry in monomer solution in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the surface of a carbon paste electrode (CPE). Ni(II) and Co(II) ions were incorporated into the electrode by immersion of the polymer-modified electrodes in Ni(II) and Co(II) ion solutions in different proportions. After the preparation of modified electrodes, their electrochemical behavior was studied by cyclic voltammetric experiments. Electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol at the surface of the modified electrodes was studied in 1?M NaOH solution. These modified electrodes exhibit high electrocatalytic activity and stability in alkaline solution, showing oxidation peaks at low potentials with high current densities. The electrooxidation of methanol was found to be more efficient on CPE/PINA(SDS)/Ni80Co20 than on CPE/PINA(SDS)/Ni and CPE/PINA(SDS)/Ni50Co50. The effects of various parameters such as scan rates and methanol concentration on the electrooxidation of methanol are also investigated.

Platinum nanoparticles were successfully deposited within a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)–Nafion matrix by a cyclic voltammetry method. A Pt(IV) complex was reduced to platinum nanoparticles on the surface of MWCNTs. The resulting Pt nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The Pt–MWCNT–Nafion nanocomposite film-modified glassy carbon electrode had a sharp hydrogen desorption peak at about −0.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl (3 M) in a solution of 0.5 M H2SO4, which is directly related to the electrochemical activity of the Pt nanoparticles presented on the surface of MWCNTs. The electrocatalytic properties of the Pt–MWCNT–Nafion nanocomposite-modified glassy carbon electrode for methanol electrooxidation were investigated by cyclic voltammetry in a 2 M CH3OH + 1 M H2SO4 solution. In comparison with the Pt-coated glassy carbon electrode and the Pt–Nafion modified glassy carbon electrode, the Pt–MWCNT–Nafion-modified electrode had excellent electrocatalytic activity toward methanol electrooxidation. The stability of the Pt–MWCNT–Nafion nanocomposite-modified electrode had also been evaluated.

This work describes the use of interdigitated array electrodes (IDAE) for proton detection. Methanol electrooxidation in sulfuric acid solution was exemplified. Reduction currents originating in the reaction product generated by methanol electrooxidation on a Pt generator electrode were observed at the Pt collector electrode, the potential of which was fixed in the hydrogen evolution region. In order to reduce the background current of hydrogen evolution, an Hg‐plated Pt collector electrode was fabricated. Compared to the Pt collector electrode, the reduction current observed at the Hg collector electrode was extremely small. The product detected was found to be a proton from the current responses observed at Pt and Hg collector electrodes.

Catalytic activity of the Pt(111)/Os surface toward methanol electrooxidation was optimized by exploring a wide range of Os coverage. Various methods of surface analyses were used, including electroanalytical, STM, and XPS methods. The Pt(111) surface was decorated with nanosized Os islands by spontaneous deposition, and the Os coverage was controlled by changing the exposure time to the Os-containing electrolyte. The structure of Os deposits on Pt(111) was characterized and quantified by in situ STM and stripping voltammetry. We found that the optimal Os surface coverage of Pt(111) for methanol electrooxidation was 0.7 +/- 0.1 ML, close to 1.0 +/- 0.1 Os packing density. Apparently, the high osmium coverage Pt(111)/Os surface provides more of the necessary oxygen-containing species (e.g., Os-OH) for effective methanol electrooxidation than the Pt(111)/Os surfaces with lower Os coverage (vs e.g., Ru-OH). Supporting evidence for this conjecture comes from the CO electrooxidation data, which show that the onset potential for CO stripping is lowered from 0.53 to 0.45 V when the Os coverage is increased from 0.2 to 0.7 ML. However, the activity of Pt(111)/Os for methanol electrooxidation decreases when the Os coverage is higher than 0.7 +/- 0.1 ML, indicating that Pt sites uncovered by Os are necessary for sustaining significant methanol oxidation rates. Furthermore, osmium is inactive for methanol electrooxidation when the platinum substrate is absent: Os deposits on Au(111), a bulk Os ingot, and thick films of electrodeposited Os on Pt(111), all compare poorly to Pt(111)/Os. We conclude that a bifunctional mechanism applies to the methanol electrooxidation similarly to Pt(111)/Ru, although with fewer available Pt sites. Finally, the potential window for methanol electrooxidation on Pt(111)/Os was observed to shift positively versus Pt(111)/Ru. Because of the difference in the Os and Ru oxophilicity under electrochemical conditions, the Os deposit provides fewer oxygen-containing species, at least below 0.5 V vs RHE. Both higher coverage of Os than Ru and the higher potentials are required to provide a sufficient number of active oxygen-containing species for the effective removal of the site-blocking CO from the catalyst surface when the methanol electrooxidation process occurs.

Electrochemically platinum plated aluminum (Al/Pt) was used as an electrode substrate for the electropolymerization of aminophenols and fabrication of composite electrodes based on platinum nano-particles. The poly(o-aminophenol) (PoAP), poly(m-aminophenol) (PmAP), and poly(p-aminophenol) (PpAP) were synthesized on the Al/Pt electrode, and further modification was performed by deposition of platinum nano-particles onto polymer matrixes. The electrochemical and morphological characteristic of the composed electrodes were carried out by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on the composite electrodes was studied by cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M sulfuric acid as supporting electrolyte. It was found that the Al/Pt/PoAP electrode incorporated Pt nano-particles (Al/Pt/PoAP/Pt) exhibits a higher electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methanol than the Al/Pt/PmAP/Pt and Al/Pt/PpAP/Pt electrodes. On the other hand, a higher catalytic current for methanol oxidation was found on the Al/Pt/PoAP/Pt electrode in comparison to bulk Pt and Al–Pt (Al with 0.2 mg cm−2 of Pt particles) electrodes. The effects of various parameters such as thickness of the polymer film, concentration of the monomer, Pt loading method and the Pt amounts, concentration of the methanol, and the medium temperature were studied on the electrooxidation of methanol. The long-term stability of the modified electrode has also been investigated.

Nickel foam and five nickel foam-based composite electrodes were prepared for being used as anode materials for the electrooxidation of methanol in KOH solution containing 0.1 and 1.0 M of methanol. The layered electrodes composed of nickel foam, platinum nanoparticles, polyaniline (PANI) and/or porous carbon (C) prepared in various assemblies. As shown by SEM analysis, depending on the preparation conditions, the electrodes of different morphologies were obtained. Using the cyclic voltammetry method, the oxidation of methanol on nickel foam electrode was observed in the potential range 0.4 V ↔ 0.7 V, where the Ni(OH)2/NiOOH transformation occurred. The presence of Pt particles in electrode gave rise to the increase in electrocatalytic activity in this potential range. For electrodes containing dispersed platinum catalyst (Ni/Pt, Ni/PANI/Pt and Ni/C/Pt), the oxidation of methanol was noted also in the potential range −0.5 V ↔ 0.1 V. The electrocatalytic activities of the examined electrodes toward methanol oxidation at low potentials were in order Ni/Pt > Ni/C/Pt > Ni/PANI/Pt, whereas at high potentials in order Ni/PANI/Pt > Ni/Pt> Ni/C/Pt > Ni. Among the examined electrodes, the most resistant to cyclic poisoning appeared to be the Ni/C/Pt electrode. Carbon ceramic electrode, a new electrode substrate, was prepared by sol–gel procedure and used for the electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine and incorporation of platinum nanoparticles into the resulting poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) film. The modified electrode was used for electrooxidation of methanol in 0.3 M H2SO4 as supporting electrolyte. The presence of PoPD film increased considerably the efficiency of deposited Pt nanoparticles toward the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol. The effective parameters on the electrooxidation of methanol, i.e., amounts of polymer and Pt catalyst, medium temperature, working potential limit in anodic direction, and potential scan rate, were investigated, and the results were discussed.

A novel Pt/Cu‐zeolite A/graphene based electrocatalyst was successfully prepared by chemical reduction method for methanol electrooxidation. Graphite oxide and Cu functionalized zeolite A were simultaneously reduced by NaBH4 to prepare Cu‐zeolite A/graphene support which was used to deposit Pt nanoparticles. The nanostructure and composition of as‐prepared Pt/Cu‐zeolite A/graphene composites were characterized by X‐ray diffractometer, X‐ray fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy. The electrocatalytic properties of Pt/Cu‐zeolite A/graphene modified electrode for methanol oxidation were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in 0.10 mol/L H2SO4 + 0.50 mol/L CH3OH solution. Compared with Pt/zeolite A/graphene electrode and Pt/graphene electrode, Pt/Cu‐zeolite A/graphene based electrode exhibited obviously enhanced current and higher electrocatalytic activity for methanol electrooxidation. The increased electrocatalytic activity was attributed to the presence of zeolite A and reduced graphene oxide based dual template, which significantly increased the effective electrode surface and facilitated the diffusion of analytes into the electroactive catalyst.

Highly ordered Pd/Pt–core–shell nanowire arrays (Pd/Pt NWAs) have been prepared by anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template-electrodeposition and magnetron sputtering methods. Pd/Pt NWA electrode shows a very high electrochemical active surface area and high electrocatalytic activity for the methanol electrooxidation in acid medium for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The mass specific anodic peak current density is 756.7 mA mg−1 Pt for the methanol oxidation on the Pd/Pt NWA electrode, an increase by a factor of four as compared to conventional E-TEK PtRu/C electrocatalysts. The mechanism of the significant enhancement of the Pd/Pt core/shell NWA nanostructure in the efficiency and electrocatalytic activity of Pt for the methanol electrooxidation in acid medium is discussed.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol studied at the surface of nickel disc electrode coated with N,N-bis(salicylidene)phenylenediamine (Salophen) legend in 0.10 M NaOH solution using cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that the Ni-salophen layer formed at the surface of electrode behaves as an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxidation of methanol in alkaline medium. The thermal analysis of Ni-salophen complex studied at temperature ranges 0–800°C in argon atmosphere. Also, FTIR was employed to prove the formation of complex on the modified electrode surface. Moreover, the effects of various parameters such as oven temperature, methanol concentration, NaOH concentration and media temperature on electro-oxidation of methanol were investigated. The kinetic parameters such as activation energy and Tafel slope were calculated for methanol oxidation on the modified electrode surface. The electrochemical oxidation of methanol has been carefully studied due to its application in fuel cells. In this work electrooxidation of methanol was investigated on bare platinum electrode, the platinum electrode covered with Nafion and platinum supported on zeolite 13X. Along with classical electrochemical methods, attractor reconstruction was used to make rough distinction among possible reaction mechanisms on different forms of Pt. The obtained transient voltammogram records were used to calculate apparent rate constants for methanol oxidation limiting steps in transient period. All samples contributed to methanol oxidation by basically same reaction mechanism, but with significantly different apparent rate constants.
