We report on an experiment in which a negative hydrogen ion beam in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linear accelerator was replaced with a beam of protons with similar size and dynamics. Fractional beam loss in the superconducting part of the SNS accelerator was measured to be at least 2×10(-5) for the H(-) beam, and it was an order of magnitude lower for the protons. Also beam loss has a stronger dependence on intensity with H(-) than with proton beams. These measurements verify a recent theoretical explanation of unexpected beam losses in the SNS superconducting linear accelerator based on an intrabeam stripping mechanism for negative hydrogen ions. This previously unidentified mechanism for beam loss is important for the design of new high current linear ion accelerators and the performance improvement of existing machines.  相似文献

Focusing of a low-energy beam of heavy ions in a linear accelerator based on a periodic sequence of independently phased superconducting cavities is considered. The possibility of heavy ion beam focusing by a system of superconducting solenoids is analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of this focusing technique are considered. It is shown that solenoids with a magnetic field exceeding B = 15 T are required for focusing ion beams with a small charge-to-mass ratio Z/A ≈ 1/66 in a superconducting accelerator.  相似文献

Test samples of detectors and electronics for them constructed for the purpose of monitoring the “intense” relativistic ion beams extracted from the accelerator of the Nuclotron-M accelerator complex in real time are described. The system was tested in a series of acceleration runs with deuteron beams with an intensity of up to 1010 1/s and beams of carbon nuclei. The system allows one to perform multiple measurements of the two-dimensional distribution of the beam intensity in the plane perpendicular to it and the beam position in this plane during the beam dump and measure the two-dimensional distribution of the target irradiation dose after each beam dump.  相似文献

A new ion source has been designed and manufactured for the CYCLONE30 accelerator, which has a much advanced performance compared with the original. It is expected that the newly designed ion source extraction system will transport a very large percentage of the beam without deteriorating the beam optics, which is designed to deliver an H- beam at 30 keV. The accelerator assembly consists of three circular aperture electrodes made of copper. The simulation study was focused on finding parameter sets that raise the beam perveance as large as possible and which reduce the beam divergence as low as possible. Ion beams of the highest quality are extracted whenever the half-angular divergence is minimum, for which the perveance current intensity and the extraction gap have optimum values. The triode extraction system is designed and optimized by using CST software (for Particle Beam Simulations). The physical design of the extraction system is given in this paper. From the simulation results, it is concluded that it is possible to achieve this goal by decreasing the thickness of the plasma electrode, shortening the first gap, and adjusting the acceleration electrode voltage.  相似文献

It is particularly useful if one can continuously measure the beam current without disturbing the beam. We report here on test experiments for an Integrating Current Transformer (ICT) used to measure fast extraction beams from the HIRFL-CSR main ring (CSRm). A comparative analysis and optimization of energy efficiency for proton and ion beams in ADS systems is performed via simulation using a GEANT4 code with account for energy consumption for different accelerator types. It is demonstrated that for light nuclei, beginning from 7Li, with energies above 1 GeV/nucleon, ion beams are considerably (several times) more efficient than the 1–3 GeV proton beam. The possibility of achieving energy deposition equivalent to 1 GeV protons in a quasi-infinite uranium target with higher efficiency (and twice as small accelerator size) in the case of acceleration of light ions is substantiated.  相似文献

A backstepping control method is proposed for controlling beam halo-chaos in the periodic focusing channels (PFCs) of high-current ion accelerator. The analysis and numerical results show that the method, via adjusting an exterior magnetic field, is effective to control beam halo chaos with five types of initial distribution ion beams, all statistical quantities of the beam halo-chaos are largely reduced, and the uniformity of ion beam is improved. This control method has an important value of application, for the exterior magnetic field can be easily adjusted in the periodical magnetic focusing channels in experiment.  相似文献

Luminosity mainly depends on the beam intensity of the circulating beams and the beam profiles at the interaction points. By either increasing the total beam current or decreasing its size the instantaneous luminosity can be increased. In addition any method to slow down beam growth and debunching processes will further improve the luminosity which can be integrated over a store. Optimizing beam cleaning procedures such as collimation or abort gap cleaning will further increase the amount of usable luminosity for experiments. This paper will give a brief introduction to some accelerator basics of interest and the luminosity as a function of beam parameters. Limitations to the achievable integrated luminosity as well as future upgrades to overcome these limitations are presented.  相似文献

A secondary beam line (GIRAFFE) at the Beijing Tandem accelerator lab was constructed for yielding low energy secondary beams. The current progress on the study of nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure is presented. Up to now, We have carried out measurement of~(7)Be(d, n)~( 8)B,~(11)C(d, n)~(12)N,~(8)Li(d, p)~(9)Li, and~(6)He(p, n)~(6)Li reactions. Laser-accelerated ion beams (LIBs) have been increasingly applied in the field of material irradiation in recent years due to the unique properties of ultra-short beam duration, extremely high beam current, etc. Here we explore an application of using laser-accelerated ion beams to prepare graphene. The pulsed LIBs produced a great instantaneous beam current and thermal effect on the SiC samples with a shooting frequency of 1 Hz. In the experiment, we controlled the deposition dose by adjusting the number of shootings and the irradiating current by adjusting the distance between the sample and the ion source. During annealing at 1100 ℃, we found that the 190 shots ion beams allowed more carbon atoms to self-assemble into graphene than the 10 shots case. By comparing with the controlled experiment based on ion beams from a traditional ion accelerator, we found that the laser-accelerated ion beams could cause greater damage in a very short time. Significant thermal effect was induced when the irradiation distance was reduced to less than 1 cm, which could make partial SiC self-annealing to prepare graphene dots directly. The special effects of LIBs indicate their vital role to change the structure of the irradiation sample.  相似文献

JUNA团队计划利用CJPL所提供的极低本底条件和400 kV高压平台上2.45 GHz ECR离子源产生的毫安量级束流首次在天体物理能区对关键核反应进行直接测量。实验需要10 emA的质子束流和He+束流以及2 emA的He2+束流。使用2.45 GHz离子源产生毫安量级的He2+束流是离子源制造的难点。由于离子源分析磁铁分辨能力有限,无法区分He2+和H+2离子,本文首次使用核反应法对离子源产生的A/q=2的束流进行了鉴别,结果显示,JUNA项目2.45 GHz ECR离子源无法产生毫安量级的He2+束流。该研究成果为JUNA项目离子源的设计提供了重要的参考依据。JUNA团队另外研制了一台微波频率为14.5 GHz的ECR离子源并成功产生2 emA的He2+束流来满足实验需求。  相似文献

This paper examines the process dynamics and thermodynamics of charged particle beams which remain equipartitioned. Considering a high-intensity ion beam in a space-charge dominated regime and with an initially large mismatched RMS beam size, we observe a fast increasing spatial anisotropy of the beam. Since space-charge interactions in a high-intensity linear accelerator can lead to energy equipartition between the degrees of freedom, this anisotropization phenomena suggest a kind of route to equipartition. In this paper we show that the particle-particle resonances and mode-particle resonances lead to the anisotropization of the beam, that is, both the envelope ratio and the emittance ratio are different from one. We propose that this anisotropy is responsible for the beam’s equipartitioning. The results suggest that the beam remains equipartitioned when it exhibits a macroscopic anisotropy, which is characterized by the following properties: the development of an elliptical shape with increasing size along a direction, the presence of a coupling between transversal emittances, halo formation along a preferential direction, stationarity of the temperature and a growth of the entropy in the cascade form. We call the state characterized by these properties as an anisotropic equipartition state.  相似文献

A new generation electron cooler has started operation in the heavy ion synchrotron CSRm which is used to increase the intensity of heavy ions. Transverse cooling of the ion beam after horizontal multi-turn injection allows beam accumulation at the injection energy. After optimization of the accumulation process an intensity increase in a synchrotron pulse by more than one order of magnitude has been achieved. In given accumulation time interval of 10 seconds, 108 particles have been accumulated and accelerated to the final energy. The momentum spread after accumulation and acceleration in the 10-4 range has been demonstrated in six species of ion beams. Primary measurements of accumulation process varying with electron energy, electron beam current, electron beam profile, expansion factor and injection interval have been performed. The lifetimes of ion beams in the presence of electron beams were roughly measured with the help of DCCT signal.  相似文献

The accelerator complex of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) consists of a H linear accelerator (linac) and a rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). The linac contains a Penning surface H ion source. The designed energy and the beam current of the source are 50 keV and 20 mA respectively, with a normalized root mean square (norm. rms.) emittance of 0.2π mm mrad. The manufactures and tests of the discharge chamber are in great progress. The construction of H ion source test stand has been completed, and the operation of the source is also in progress. Stable H ion beams with energy of 50 keV and current up to 50 mA are attained. Emittance measurement for the H beam is being prepared.

This paper summarizes briefly the main experimental and numerical results of the IPPLM team studies on the generation of ultra-intense ion beams by a short (≤1?ps) laser pulse. Basic laser-driven ion acceleration schemes capable of generating such ion beams are described including the target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) scheme, the skin-layer ponderomotive acceleration (SLPA) scheme and the laser-induced cavity pressure acceleration (LICPA) scheme. It is shown that an efficient way for achieving high ion beam intensities and fluencies lies in using a short-wavelength laser driver of circular light polarization. In such a case, SLPA clearly dominates over TNSA, and dense and compact ion bunch is generated with high energetic efficiency. The LICPA scheme operating in the photon (radiation) pressure regime can be even more efficient than SLPA. As it is demonstrated by particle-in-cell simulations, the LICPA accelerator with a picosecond, circularly polarized laser driver of intensity ~ 1021?W/cm2 can produce sub-picosecond light ion beams of intensity ~ 1022?W/cm2 and fluence?>?1?GJ/cm2 with the energetic efficiency of tens of percent. Laser-driven ion beams of such extreme parameters could open up new research areas in high-energy-density science, inertial fusion or nuclear physics.  相似文献

Duoplasmatrons have been employed at GSI as accelerator sources of multiply charged heavy ions, but extensive experience was collected also with singly charged noble gas ions. Other ion species can be produced from volatile compounds. provided that the cathode is protected from aggressive vapours by an additional noble gas. In a second source modification. the sputter duoplasmatron, ions are directly obtained from solid material.

Recently the GSI-duoplasmatron has been equipped with plasma expansion cups in order to raise the ion current output. Generally, at least a factor of three is gained in beam intensity and other aspects of source performance are improved, too.

A new cathode design considerably enhances life-time and reliability, permitting uninterrupted operation for a few hundred hours. Tables of measured ion beam currents are given.  相似文献

A new approach to the analysis of charge particle motion in periodic resonant RF accelerators is suggested. A three-dimensional equation of motion in the Hamiltonian form is derived. This equation makes it possible to carefully study the relationship between the transverse and the longitudinal dynamics of the ion beams at low initial energies. General conditions for RF focusing in ion linacs are formulated. Basic results are compared with numerical simulation data for the beam dynamics in the polyharmonic field of the accelerating cavity. A version of an RF-focusing proton accelerator in which the current transmission coefficient is close to that in an accelerator with radio frequency quadrupole is described.  相似文献

At the new high flux reactor FRM-II in Munich the accelerator MAFF (Munich accelerator for fission fragments) is under design. In the high neutron flux of 1014 n/cm2 s up to 1014 neutron-rich fission fragments per second are produced in the 1 g U-235 target. Ions with an energy of 30 keV are extracted from the ion source. In the mass separator two isotopes can be selected. One of the beams is used for low energy experiments, the other one is injected into an ECRIS (or EBIS) for charge breeding to a q/A≥0.16. A gas filled RFQ cooler is used for emittance improvement. The subsequent LINAC delivers beams with an energy ranging from 3.7 MeV/u to 5.9 MeV/u. New IH structures are being developed at the Munich tandem laboratory. A small storage ring is planned in a further stage to recycle the fission fragments. A thin target foil can be placed into this ring, e.g., for synthesis of super-heavy elements. The through-going beam tube has been installed in the heavy water tank of the reactor. Tests of the target ion source in a special oven to test long term stability and safety tests were in progress.  相似文献

 介绍了“闪光二号”加速器产生的高功率离子束在漂移管中的传输实验。对比了采用中性化措施前后的传输情况,分析了中性化措施对离子束束斑半径、束流均匀性的影响。根据实测的二极管电压模拟得到了传输一定距离后的束流波形,与实测结果符合较好。采取适当的中性化措施后,高功率离子束可以有效传输80 cm以上,束流发散得到抑制,束流均匀性得到改善。  相似文献
