In this article, hybrid fillers with different dimensions,namely,2-dimensional (2-D) expanded graphite (EG) and 1-dimensional (1-D) multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs),were added to aromatic nylon MXD6 matrix via melt-blending,to enhance its thermal and electrical conductivity as well as electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE).For ternary composites of MXD6/EG/CNTs,the electrical conductivity reaches up nine orders of magnitude higher compared to that of the neat MXD6 sample, which tumed the polymer-based composites from an insulator to a conductor, and the thermal conductivity has been enhanced by 477% compared with that of neat MXD6 sample.Meanwhile, the EMI SE of ternary composite reaches ~50 dB at the overall filler loading of only 18 wt%.This work can provide guidance for the preparation of polymer composites with excellent thermal and electrical conductivity via using hybrid filler.

In this work, dodecylamine‐modified graphene nanosheets (DA‐GNSs) and γ‐aminopropyl‐triethoxysilane‐treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f‐MWCNTs) are employed to prepare cyanate ester (CE) thermally conductive composites. By adding 5 wt% DA‐GNSs or f‐MWCNTs to the CE resin, the thermal conductivities of the composites became 3.2 and 2.5 times that of the CE resin, respectively. To further improve the thermal conductivity, a mixture of the two fillers was utilized. A remarkable synergetic effect between the DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs on improving the thermal conductivity of CE resin composites was demonstrated. The composite containing 3 wt% hybrid filler exhibited a 185% increase in thermal conductivity compared with pure CE resin, whereas composites with individual DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs exhibited increases of 158 and 108%, respectively. Moreover, the composite with hybrid filler retained high electrical resistivity. Scanning electron microscopy images of the composite morphologies showed that the modified graphene nanosheets (GNSs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were uniformly dispersed in the CE matrix, and a number of junction points among MWCNTs and between MWCNTs and GNSs formed in the composites with hybrid fillers. Generally, we can conclude that these composites filled with hybrid fillers may be promising materials of further improving the thermal conductivity of CE composites. Electrically and thermally conductive high‐density polyethylene composites filled with hybrid fillers, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and silver nanoparticles (Ag‐NPs), have been prepared in the melt state. The investigation of their electrical and thermal conductivities while comparing with high‐density polyethylene/MWCNT binary composites shows that the addition of only 3 vol% of Ag‐NPs does not reduce the electrical percolation threshold (Pc) that remains as low as 0.40 vol% of MWCNTs but leads to an increase in the maximum dc electrical conductivity of PE/MWCNT composites by two orders of magnitudes. Moreover, the association of both Ag‐NPs and carbon nanotube particles improved our composite's thermal conductivity. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Acrylonitrile rubber(NBR) composites filled with barium titanate(BT) were prepared using an internal mixer and a two-roll mill. Also, a secondary filler, namely carbon nanotubes(CNT), was added in order to find a potential synergistic blend ratio of BT and CNT. The cure characteristics, tensile and dielectric properties(dielectric constant and dielectric loss) of the composites were determined. It was found that NBR/BT composites with CNT secondary filler, at a proper BT:CNT ratio, exhibited shorter scorch time(t_(s1)) and cure time(t_(c90)) together with superior tensile properties and reinforcement efficiency, relative to the one with only the primary filler. In addition, the NBR/BT-CNT composite with 80 phr BT and 1-2 phr CNT had dielectric constant of 100-500, dielectric loss of 12-100 and electrical conductivity below 10~(-4) S/m together with high thermal stability. Thus, with a proper BT:CNT mix and filler loading, we can produce mechanically superior rubber composites that are easy to process and low-cost, for flexible dielectric materials application.

In this work we present the preparation of conductive polyethylene/carbon nanotube composites based on the segregated network concept. Attention has been focused on the effect of decreasing the amount of filler necessary to achieve low resistivity. Using high- and low-grade single-walled carbon nanotube materials we obtained conductive composites with a low percolation threshold of 0.5 wt.% for high-grade nanotubes, about 1 wt% for commercial nanotubes and 1.5 wt% for low-grade material. The higher percolation threshold for low-grade material is related to low effectiveness of other carbon fractions in the network formation. The electrical conductivity was measured as a function of the single-walled carbon nanotubes content in the polymer matrix and as a function of temperature. It was also found that processing parameters significantly influenced the electrical conductivity of the composites. Raman spectroscopy was applied to study single wall nanotubes in the conductive composites.

Thermoplastic polyurethane composites with an excellent dielectric constant and high thermal conductivity were obtained using CNT@BaTiO3 as a filler through a low-speed melt extrusion method. Before preparing the hybrid filler for the composite, the filler particles were surface modified to ensure that the outer surfaces could facilitate the reaction among particles to form the hybrid and ensure complete dispersion in the thermoplastic polyurethane matrix. After confirming the proper surface treatment of the filler particles using infrared spectroscopy, thermal degradation analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy, they were used to prepare the composite materials at a processing temperature of 200 °C. The thermal stability, thermomechanical properties, mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, and dielectric properties of the composites were investigated. Compared to the neat thermoplastic polyurethane matrix, the prepared composite exhibited a higher thermal stability, approximately 300% higher storage modulus, higher tensile strength and elongation at break values, approximately three times higher thermal conductivity (improved from 0.19 W/(m.K) to 0.38 W/(m.K), and approximately five times larger dielectric constant at high frequencies (at 1 MHz a dielectric constant of 19.2 was obtained).

Polyaniline (PAni)-coated reduced multiwall carbon nanotubes (PRMWNTs) and carbon black (CB)-filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites (PRMWNTs/CB/HDPE) were prepared through a melt mixing method. Oxidized MWNTs (OMWNTs) were prepared by treating pristine multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with an acid mixture (HNO3:H2SO4), and PAni-coated OMWNTs (POMWNTs) were synthesized via in-situ polymerization of aniline monomer in the presence of OMWNTs. POMWNTs were further reduced using hydrazine monohydrate to obtain the PRMWNTs. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the formation of PRMWNTs. PRMWNTs showed significantly improved thermal stability and electrical conductivity comparing to POMWNTs. The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behavior of PRMWNTs/CB/HDPE composites revealed enhanced PTC intensity and electrical conductivity at room temperature compared to POMWNTs/CB/HDPE composites. The PRMWNTs-10/CB/HDPE composite showed high peak resistivity (301.99 MΩ-cm) and low room temperature resistivity compared to the POMWNTs/CB/HDPE composite, and thus showed the highest PTC intensity value of 6.693 as well as very excellent cyclic stability.

We report an approach to the development of advanced structural composites based on engineered multiscale carbon nanotube-carbon fiber reinforcement. Electrophoresis was utilized for the selective deposition of multi- and single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on woven carbon fabric. The CNT-coated carbon fabric panels were subsequently infiltrated with epoxy resin using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) to fabricate multiscale hybrid composites in which the nanotubes were completely integrated into the fiber bundles and reinforced the matrix-rich regions. The carbon nanotube/carbon fabric/epoxy composites showed approximately 30% enhancement of the interlaminar shear strength as compared to that of carbon fiber/epoxy composites without carbon nanotubes and demonstrate significantly improved out-of-plane electrical conductivity.

Multi-walled nanotubes were added into furan resin. Unidirectional carbon/carbon preforms were densified with the nanotube-doped furan resin by impregnation–carbonization cycle. The effects of Multi-walled nanotubes on the microstructure of resin carbon and thermal conductivity of carbon/carbon composites were investigated. The results show that Multi-walled nanotubes can induce the ordered arrangement of planar carbon microlites in resin carbon during high-temperature treatment and enhance the graphitization degree of resin carbon. Small amount of Multi-walled nanotubes in resin carbon can enhance the thermal conductivity of C/C composites evidently, especially the thermal conductivity vertical to the direction of fiber axis, due to the improvement of microstructure of resin carbon. Excess Multi-walled nanotubes in resin are disadvantageous to the enhancement of thermal conductivity instead, because they are difficult to disperse and easy to agglomerate, resulting thermal resistances in carbon matrix.

Rubber blend of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber (50/50) has been loaded with increasing contents, up to 100 phr, of reinforcing filler, namely, high abrasion furnace (HAF) carbon black. Prepared composites have been subjected to gamma radiation doses up to 250 kGy to induce radiation vulcanization under atmospheric conditions. Mechanical properties, namely, tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus at 100% elongation (M100), and hardness have been followed up as a function of irradiation dose and degree of loading with filler. On the other hand, variation of the swelling number as a physical property, as a function of same parameters, however, in car oil as well as brake oil has been undertaken. In addition, the electrical properties of prepared composites, namely, their electrical conductivity, were also evaluated. The thermal behavior of the prepared composites was also investigated. The results obtained indicate that improvement has been attained in different properties of loaded NBR/EPDM composites with respect to unloaded ones.

The results of thermal conductivity study of epoxy–matrix composites filled with different type of powders are reported. Boron nitride and aluminum nitride micro‐powders with different size distribution and surface modification were used. A representative set of samples has been prepared with different contents of the fillers. The microstructure was investigated by SEM observations. Thermal conductivity measurements have been performed at room temperature and for selected samples it was also measured as a function of temperature from 300 K down to liquid helium temperatures. The most spectacular enhancement of the thermal conductivity was obtained for composites filled with hybrid fillers of boron nitride–silica and aluminum nitride–silica. In the case of sample with 31 vol.% of boron nitride–silica hybrid filler it amounts to 114% and for the sample with 45 vol.% of hybrid filler by 65% as compared with the reference composite with silica filler. However, in the case of small aluminum nitride grains application, large interfacial areas were introduced, promoting creation of thermal resistance barriers and causing phonon scattering more effective. As a result, no thermal conductivity improvement was obtained. Different characters of temperature dependencies are observed for hybrid filler composites which allowed identifying the component filler of the dominant contribution to the thermal conductivity in each case. The data show a good agreement with predictions of Agari‐Uno model, indicating the importance of conductive paths forming effect already at low filler contents. Graphene nanoplatelets are promising candidates for enhancing the electrical conductivity of composites. However, because of their poor dispersion, graphene nanoplatelets must be added in large amounts to achieve the desired electrical properties, but such large amounts limit the industrial application of graphene nanoplatelets. Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes also possess high electrical conductivity accompanied by poor dispersion. Therefore, a synergistic effect was generated between graphene nanoplatelets and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes and used for the first time to prepare antistatic materials with high‐density polyethylene via 1‐step melt blending. The synergistic effect makes it possible to significantly improve the electrical properties by adding a small amount of untreated graphene nanoplatelets and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes and increases the possibility of using graphene nanoplatelets in industrial applications. When only 1 wt% graphene nanoplatelets and 0.5 wt% multi‐walled carbon nanotubes were added, the surface and volume resistivity values of the composites were much lower than those of the composites that were only added 3 wt% graphene nanoplatelets. Additionally, as a result of the synergistic effect of graphene nanoplatelets and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes, the composites met the requirements for antistatic materials.

Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were acidified with nitration mixture, and the Fe2O3‐MWCNTs (iron oxide coated multi‐walled carbon nanotubes) hybrid material via sol‐gel method then verified the results through scanning electron microscope, X‐ray diffraction, and thermal gravimetric analysis. We modified the hybrid material with silane coupling agent (KH560), Fe2O3‐MWCNTs/epoxy, MWCNTs/epoxy composites coating, and the pure epoxy coatings were respectively prepared. The properties of the composite coatings were tested through the electrochemical workstation (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), shock experiments, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Finally, we used scanning electron microscope to observe the surface conditions of the coatings. The results show that Fe2O3‐MWCNTs have good dispersion in the epoxy resin, and the Fe2O3‐MWCNTs/epoxy composite coatings have enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. This paper focuses on the influence of ionic liquid on carbon nanotube based elastomeric composites. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are modified using an ionic liquid at room temperature, 1-butyl 3-methyl imidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulphonyl) imide (BMI) and modified MWCNTs exhibit physical (cation–π/π–π) interaction with BMI. The polychloroprene rubber (CR) composites are prepared using unmodified and BMI modified MWCNTs. The presence of BMI not only increases the alternating current (AC) electrical conductivity and polarisability of the composites but also improves the state of dispersion of the tubes as observed from dielectric spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy respectively. In addition to the hydrodynamic reinforcement, the formation of improved filler–filler networks is reflected in the dynamic storage modulus (E′) for modified MWCNTs/CR composites in amplitude sweep measurement upon increasing the proportion of BMI. Hardness and mechanical properties are also studied for the composites as a function of BMI.

In this study, a carbon‐controllable hierarchical micro/mesoporous carbon–silica material derived from agricultural waste rice husk was easily synthesized and utilized as filler in an epoxy matrix for electronic packaging applications. Scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms were used to characterize the morphology, thermal stability, carbon content, and porous structural properties, respectively, of the as‐obtained carbon–silica material, namely rice husk char (RHC ). As a filler material, the uniformly dispersed RHC filler in the epoxy/RHC composite was easily prepared through hydrogen bonding of the silanol group of silica with the epoxy matrix. For electronic packaging applications, the thermal conductivity and thermomechanical properties (storage modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion) of the epoxy/RHC composites improved with increasing carbon content. Moreover, loading of the 40% RHC filler substantially enhanced the storage modulus of the epoxy/RHC composite (5735 MPa ) compared to the epoxy with 40% commercial silica filler (3681 MPa ). Considerable commercial potential is expected for the carbon–silica composite because of the simple synthesis process and outstanding performance of the prepared packaging material.

Carbon fillers including multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), carbon black (CB) and graphite were introduced in a cyanate ester (CE) resin, respectively. The effects of the fillers on the electrical and thermal conductivity of the resin were measured and analyzed based on the microscopic observations. MWCNTs, CB and graphite exhibited percolation threshold at 0.1 wt%, 0.5 wt% and 10 wt%, respectively. The maximal electrical conductivity of the composites was 1.08 S/cm, 9.94 × 10−3 S/cm and 1.70 × 10−5 S/cm. MWCNTs showed the best enhancement on the electrical conductivity. The thermal behavior of the composites was analyzed by calorimetry method. Incorporation of MWCNTs, CB and graphite increased the thermal conductivity of CE resin by 90%, 15% and 92%, respectively. Theoretical models were introduced to correlate the thermal conductivity of the CE/MWCNTs composite. The interfacial thermal resistance between CE resin and MWCNTs was 8 × 10−8 m2K/W and the straightness ratio was 0.2. The MWCNTs were seriously entangled and agglomerated. Simulation results revealed that thermal conductivity of the CE/MWCNTs composites can be substantially elevated by increasing the straightness ratio and/or filler content of MWCNTs.
