Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) is a reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) mode with mobile phases containing a surfactant (ionic or non-ionic) above its critical micellar concentration (CMC). In these conditions, the stationary phase is modified with an approximately constant amount of surfactant monomers, and the solubilising capability of the mobile phase is altered by the presence of micelles, giving rise to diverse interactions (hydrophobic, ionic and steric) with major implications in retention and selectivity. From its beginnings in 1980, the technique has evolved up to becoming a real alternative in some instances (and a complement in others) to classical RPLC with hydro-organic mixtures, owing to its peculiar features and unique advantages. This review is aimed to describe the retention mechanisms (i.e. solute interactions with both stationary and mobile phases) in an MLC system, revealed in diverse reports where the retention behaviour of solutes of different nature (ionic or neutral exhibiting a wide range of polarities) has been studied in a variety of conditions (with ionic and non-ionic surfactants, added salt and organic solvent, and varying pH). The theory is supported by several mechanistic models that describe satisfactorily the retention behaviour, and allow the measurement of the strength of solute-stationary phase and solute-micelle interactions. Suppression of silanol activity, steric effects in the packing pores, anti-binding behaviour, retention of ionisable compounds, compensating effect on polarity differences among solutes, and the contribution of the solvation parameter model to elucidate the interactions in MLC, are commented.  相似文献

Measurements of counterion binding in mixtures of surfactant aqueous solutions have been performed to study the structure of the anionic/cationic mixed micelle/solution interface. The mixtures studied were SDS/DDAC and STS/TDPC. The binding of chloride and sodium ions to mixed anionic/cationic micelles was measured using ion-specific electrodes. Counterion binding was found to be strongly dependent on the molar ratio of surfactants present. The mixed micelle/solution interface includes the headgroups of both surfactants and counterions of surfactant in excess. The addition of oppositely charged surfactant caused an increasing dissociation of counterions.  相似文献

The interaction between thionine (a cationic thiazine dye) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate in aqueous solution at different temperatures has been studied spectrophotometrically. The absorption spectra were used to quantify the dye/surfactant binding constants and surfactant/water partition coefficients of the dye by applying mathematical models that consider partitioning of the dye between the micellar and aqueous pseudo-phases. The Benesi-Hildebrand equation was applied to calculate the binding constants of thionine to sodium dodecylsulfate micelles over a temperature range of 293 to 333 K. To evaluate the thermodynamic aspects of the interaction of thionine with sodium dodecylsulfate micelles, Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy changes were determined. The effect of temperature on the critical micelle concentration of sodium dodecylsulfate in the presence of thionine was also studied and discussed. The binding affinity of thionine to the sodium dodecylsulfate micelles significantly decreased with increasing temperature because of the thermal agitation.  相似文献

The migration behavior of cationic solutes and influences of the interactions of cationic solutes with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the formation of micelles and its critical micelle concentration (CMC) were investigated by capillary electrophoresis at neutral pH. Catecholamines and structurally related compounds, including epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, norephedrine, and tyramine, which involve different extents of hydrophobic, ionic and hydrogen-bonding interactions with SDS surfactant, are selected as cationic solutes. The dependence of the effective electrophoretic mobility of cationic solutes on the concentration of surfactant monomers in the premicellar region provides direct evidence of the formation of ion-pairs between cationic solutes and anionic dodecyl sulfate monomers. Three different approaches, based on the variations of either the effective electrophoretic mobility or the retention factor as a function of surfactant concentration in the premicellar and micellar regions, and the linear relationship between the retention factor and the product of a distribution coefficient and the phase ratio, were considered to determine the CMC value of SDS micelles. The suitability of the methods used for the determination of the CMC of SDS with these cationic solutes was discussed. Depending on the structures of cationic solutes and electrophoretic conditions, the CMC value of SDS determined varies in a wide concentration range. The results indicate that, in addition to hydrophobic interaction, both ionic and hydrogen-bonding interactions have pronounced effects on the formation of SDS micelles. Ionic interaction between cationic solutes and SDS surfactant stabilizes the SDS micelles, whereas hydrogen-bonding interactions weakens the solubilization of the attractive ionic interaction. The elevation of the CMC of SDS depends heavily on hydrogen-bonding interactions between cationic solutes and SDS surfactant. Thus, the CMC value of SDS is remarkably elevated with catecholamines, such as epinephrine and norepinephrine, as compared with norephedrine. In addition, the effect of methanol content in the sample solution of these cationic solutes on the CMC of SDS was also examined.  相似文献

Over 150 solute-micelle association (binding) constants and free solute retention factors are reported for a variety of neutral compounds and PTH-amino acids. The solute-micelle parameters were calculated from critically evaluated micellar liquid chromatographic data. The potential utility of these parameters for the optimization of micellar liquid chromatography and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography, including selection of the surfactant and/or stationary phase and the optimization of surfactant concentration, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The effect of cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB), anionic (sodium lauryl sulfate, NaLS), and nonionic (Brij‐35) surfactants on the rate of oxidation of some reducing sugars (xylose, glucose, and fructose) by alkaline hexacyanoferrate(III) has been studied in the temperature range from 35 to 50°C. The rate of oxidation is strongly inhibited in the presence of surfactant. The inhibition effect of surfactant on the rate of reaction has been observed below critical micelle concentration (CMC) of CTAB. In case of NaLS and Brij‐35, the inhibition effect was above CMC, at which the surfactant abruptly associates to form micelle. The kinetic data have been accounted for by the combination of surfactant molecule(s) with a substrate molecule in case of CTAB and distribution of substrate into micellar and aqueous pseudophase in case of NaLS and Brij‐35. The binding parameters (binding constants, partition coefficients, and free‐energy transfer from water to micelle) in case of NaLS and Brij‐35 have been evaluated with the help of Menger and Portnoy model reported for micellar inhibition. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interactions of anionic dye Eriochrome Blue Black R (EBBR) with various cationic micelles of surfactants n-alkyltrimethylammonium CnTAB (n=12; 14; 16 and 18) have been investigated spectrophotometrically at 25°C in premicellar and postmicellar region. The results have shown that with increasing the alkyl chain length of surfactants, the maximum absorbance of EBBR shifted to a higher wavelength and the binding constants of EBBR to cationic micelles (Kb) increases. This confirms that the surfactant micelle, which has a longer alkyl hydrocarbon chain, enables greater solubilization of dye. Thus, the hydrophobic interaction of the dye with micelles increases in the order: C12TAB相似文献

Solvation dynamics of the fluorescence probe, coumarin 102, in anionic surfactant, sodium alkyl sulfate (C(n)H(2n+1)SO(4)Na; n = 8, 10, 12, and 14), and cationic surfactant, alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(n)H(2n+1)N(CH(3))(3)Br; n = 10, 12, 14, and 16), micelle solutions have been investigated by a picosecond streak camera system. The solvation dynamics in the time range of 10(-10)-10(-8) s is characterized by a biexponential function. The faster solvation time constants are about 110-160 ps for both anionic and cationic micelle solutions, and the slower solvation time constants for sodium alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelle solutions are about 1.2-2.6 ns and 450-740 ps, respectively. Both the faster and the slower solvation times become slower with longer alkyl chain surfactant micelles. The alkyl-chain-length dependence of the solvation dynamics in both sodium alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles can be attributed to the variation of the micellar surface density of the polar headgroup by the change of the alkyl chain length. The slower solvation time constants of sodium alkyl sulfate micelle solutions are about 3.5 times slower than those of alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelle solutions for the same alkyl-chain-length surfactants. The interaction energies of the geometry optimized mimic clusters (H(2)O-C(2)H(5)SO(4)(-) and H(2)O-C(2)H(5)N(CH(3))(3)(+)) have been estimated by the density functional theory calculations to understand the interaction strengths between water and alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium headgroups. The difference of the slower solvation time constants between sodium alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelle solutions arises likely from their different specific interactions.  相似文献

In this study, the interaction of valsartan (VAL), an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, with cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was investigated. The effect of cationic micelles on spectroscopic and acid-base properties of VAL was carried out using UV spectrophotometry at physiological conditions (pH 7.4). The binding of VAL to CTAB micelles implied a shift in drug acidity constant (pK(a)(water)-pK(a)(micelle)=1.69) proving the great affinity of VAL dianion for the positively charged CTAB micelle surface. To quantify the degree of VAL/CTAB interaction, two constants were calculated by using mathematical models: micelle/water partition coefficient (K(x)) and drug/micelle binding constant (K(b)). The decrease of K(x) with VAL concentration, obtained by using pseudo-phase model, is consistent with an adsorption-like phenomenon. From the dependence of differential absorbance at lambda=295 nm on CTAB concentration, by using mathematical model that treats the solubilization of VAL dianion as its binding to specific sites in the micelles (Langmuir adsorption isotherm), the binding constant (K(b)=(2.50+/-0.49)x10(4)M(-1)) was obtained. Binding constant VAL/CTAB was also calculated using micellar liquid chromatography (MLC).

A survey of the literature reveals that the spectroscopic displacement method, in which phenolphthalein is used as a competitive chromophore to determine binding constants of β-cyclodextrin with surfactants was successful in the case of homologous hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon anionic surfactants. We show here that this method can be applied also for homologous alkyltrimethylammonium bromides (with alkyl varying from octyl- to hexadecyl) under the condition that the concentration of the cationic surfactant is distinctly lower than the value of itscritical micelle concentration.  相似文献

At low pH conditions and in the presence of anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants, hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsions (HASE) exhibit pronounced interaction that results in the solubilization of the latex. The interaction between HASE latex and surfactant was studied using various techniques, such as light transmittance, isothermal titration calorimetry, laser light scattering, and electrophoresis. For anionic surfactant, noncooperative hydrophobic binding dominates the interaction at concentrations lower than the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) (C < CAC). However, cooperative hydrophobic binding controls the formation of mixed micelles at high surfactant concentrations (C > or = CAC), where the cloudy solution becomes clear. For cross-linked HASE latex, anionic surfactant binds only noncooperatively to the latex and causes it to swell. For cationic surfactant, electrostatic interaction occurs at very low surfactant concentrations, resulting in phase separation. With further increase in surfactant concentration, noncooperative hydrophobic and cooperative hydrophobic interactions dominate the binding at low and high surfactant concentrations, respectively. For anionic and cationic surfactant systems, the CAC is lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants in water. In addition, counterion condensation plays an important role during the binding interaction between HASE latex and ionic surfactants. In the case of nonionic surfactants, free surfactant micelles are formed in solution due to their relatively low CMC values, and HASE latexes are directly solubilized into the micellar core of nonionic surfactants.  相似文献

Summary Retention models for ionic compounds in reversed-phase ion-pair chromatographic systems have been developed on the basis of the capacity ratios of solutes and ionic mobile phase components using indirect detection. The binding to the adsorbent, μBondapak Phenyl, has been expressed by ion-pair distribution constants and tested in the retention models by non-linear regression. All the ionic compounds followed adsorption models of the Langmuir type comprising two kinds of binding sites with widely different adsorption capacities and binding constants. The results indicate certain differences between the two sites regarding the binding of cationic and anionic components, respectively.  相似文献

In micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) with cationic surfactants the migration window is significantly narrower than with anionic surfactants. In order to overcome this disadvantage of cationic surfactants, it is investigated whether it is possible to widen the migration window by reducing the velocity of the aqueous phase while the electrophoretic mobility of the micelles is maintained. Short chain alkylammonium compounds, hexamethonium bromide and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose are tested as additives to the separation electrolyte with the potential to improve the migration window via reducing the velocity of the electroosmotic flow. It will be shown that these modifiers can be successfully used in order to widen the migration window in MEKC with cationic surfactant employing an alkyltrimethylammonium bromide as micelle forming agents. Influence of the modifiers selected on retention of neutral and acidic solutes and on efficiency of the separation system is investigated.  相似文献

Broad peaks are obtained when purely aqueous micellar phases are used in micellar liquid chromatography (MLC). The causes of reduced efficiency in MLC are investigated. Slow solute mass-transfer kinetics between micelles, the aqueous phase and the surfactant covered stationary phase are the origins of the efficiency loss. Knox plots show that the reduced efficiency comes from A term increase and, for lipophilic solutes, A and C terms increases. Surfactant adsorption reduces the pore volume and surface area of the stationary phase changing the flow anisotropy (A term). The surfactant adsorbed layer slows down the mass transfer (C term). Three ways for efficiency loss remediation are known: flow-rate reduction, temperature increase and alcohol addition. Alcohols are known to change the micelle structure and to increase the kinetics of micelle formation-destruction. It is shown that the ratio of the alcohol chain length to surfactant alkyl chain length, Cn, OH/Cnm surf, should be equal or higher than 1/3 to produce the best efficiency enhancements in MLC. Also, the volume of alcohol to be added is not absolute but relative to the surfactant concentration. The alcohol to surfactant concentration ratio should be kept constant. Temperature increases and especially alcohol additions reduce the retention factors. Thermodynamic and kinetics of the micellar exchanges in MLC cannot be dissociated.  相似文献

Abstract

The use of surfactant containing mobile phases to prevent or reduce the effects of adsorptive fouling of glassy carbon electrodes is reported. Both cationie and antonic surfactants are studied at concentrations above and below the critical micelle concentration. For the oxidative reactions studied here, anionic surfactants have little effect on the fouling problem, likely because of electrostatic attraction of the generated cattonic intermediate to surfactant adsorbed on the electrode surface. Cationic surfactants, however, have the desired effect. Two cationic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride and n-decylamine were studied with solutes p-nitrophenol, phenylenediamine and chlorpromazine. With these surfactants present in the mobile phase there was generally no loss of electrochemical response after up to 55 sequential injections. Adsorption of the electroactive specie prior to the electron-transfer process is shown to be a significant cause of poor chromatographic efficiency for some solutes.  相似文献

The interactions between oppositely charged surfactant/polymer mixtures have been studied using conductivity and turbidity measurements. The dependence of aggregation phenomenon on the chain length and head group modifications of conventional cationic surfactants, i.e., hexadecyl- (HTAB), tetradecyl- (TTAB), and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromides (DTAB) and dimeric cationic surfactants, i.e., decyl- (DeDGB) and dodecyldimethylgemini bromides (DDGB), is investigated. It was observed that cationic surfactants induce cooperative binding with anionic polyelectrolytes at critical aggregation concentration (cac). The cac values are considerably lower than the critical micelle concentration (cmc) values for the same surfactant. After the complete complexation, free micelles are formed at the apparent critical micelle concentration (acmc), which is slightly higher in aqueous polyelectrolyte than in pure water. Among the conventional and dimeric cationic surfactants, DTAB and DeDGB, respectively, have been found to have least interactions with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes.  相似文献

Hydrophilic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroburate, modified the properties of aqueous surfactant solutions associated with curcumin. Because of potential pharmaceutical applications as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic agent, curcumin has received ample attention as potential drug. The interaction of curcumin with various charged aqueous surfactant solutions showed it exists in deprotonated enol form in surfactant solutions. The nitro and hydroxyl groups of o-nitrophenol interact with the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups of the enol form of curcumin by forming ground state complex through hydrogen bonds and offered interesting information about the nature of the interactions between the aqueous surfactant solutions and curcumin depending on charge of head group of the surfactant. IL[bmin][BF4] encouraged early formation of micelle in case of cationic and anionic aqueous surfactant solutions, but slightly prolonged micelle formation in the case of neutral aqueous surfactant solution. However, for curcumin IL [bmin][BF4] favored strong association (7-fold increase) with neutral surfactant solution, marginally supported association with anionic surfactant solution and discouraged (~2-fold decrease) association with cationic surfactant solution.  相似文献

Cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants are characterized for their usefulness as micellar mobile phases in reversed-phase chromatography. Conditions found previously to provide optimum chromatographic efficiency for sodium dodecyl sulfate also provide high efficiency for the cationic and nonionic surfactants studied. The use of 3% n-propanol in the micellar mobile phase and column temperatures of 40°C appear to offer a broadly applicable solution to the low efficiency previously reported for micellar mobile phases. A chromatographic method for the determination of critical micelle concentrations is reported; it compares favorably with literature methods. Micellar mobile phases are shown to mimic ion-pairing mobile phases, allowing the separation of neutral solutes as well as solutes charged oppositely to the surfactant and offer a more rugged method of analysis than hydro-organic ion-pairing methods.  相似文献
