A trivalent iron chloride (FeCl3) catalyst induced both living cationic and radical polymerizations of various monomers in the presence of an appropriate additive or ligand to yield polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular-weight distributions. The in-situ mechanistic transformation from a living cationic to a radical growing species during the styrene polymerization was achieved in a FeCl3-based system with the simple addition of phosphine followed by an elevation of the reaction temperature. The growing cationic species was effectively converted into the radical species to produce a series of block copolymers that consist of styrene and various acrylic monomers.  相似文献

The use of dormant species has opened a new era in precision polymerization and has changed the concept of living polymerization. The dormant species can be exchanged into the active species via reversible termination or via reversible chain transfer. Professor Mitsuo Sawamoto has greatly contributed to the establishment of the concepts of living cationic and radical polymerizations based on the reversible activation of dormant species. This highlight, dedicated to Professor Sawamoto on his retirement from Kyoto University, provides an overview of reversible or degenerative chain‐transfer (DT) processes, which are effective in controlling all chain‐growth polymerizations, including radical, cationic, anionic, coordination, ring‐opening metathesis, and ring‐opening polymerizations. In addition, structures with novel sequences accessible only by a combination of different propagating species with a common DT agent are reviewed. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Herein, we clarified the ring-expansion cationic polymerization with a cyclic hemiacetal ester (HAE)-based initiator was versatile in terms of applicable vinyl ether monomers. Although there was a risk that higher reactive vinyl ethers may incur β-H elimination of the HAE-based cyclic dormant species to irreversibly give linear chains, the polymerizations were controlled to give corresponding cyclic polymers from various alkyl vinyl ethers of different reactivities. Functional vinyl ether monomers were also available, and for instance a vinyl ether monomer carrying an initiator moiety for metal-catalyzed living radical polymerization in the pendant allowed construction of ring-linear graft copolymers through the grafting-from approach. Furthermore, ring-based gel was prepared via the addition of divinyl ether at the end of the ring-expansion polymerization, where multi HAE bonds cyclic polymers or fused rings were crosslinked with each other. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The simultaneous control of the molecular weights and the tacticity was attained even during radical polymerization by the judicious combinations of the living/controlled radical polymerizations based on the fast interconversion between the dormant and active species, and the stereospecific radical polymerizations mediated by the added Lewis acids or polar solvents via the coordination to the monomer/polymer terminal substituents. This can be useful for various monomers including not only conjugated monomers, such as acrylamides and methacrylates, but also nonconjugated ones such as vinyl acetate and N‐vinylpyrrolidone. Stereoblock polymers were easily obtained by the addition of the Lewis acids or by change of the solvents during the living radical polymerizations. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organotellurium‐mediated living radical polymerizations (TERPs) and organostibine‐mediated living radical polymerizations (SBRPs) provide well‐defined polymers with a variety of polar functional groups via degenerative chain‐transfer polymerization. The high controllability of these polymerizations can be attributed to the rapid degenerative‐transfer process between the polymer‐end radicals and corresponding dormant species. The versatility of the methods allows the synthesis of AB diblock, ABA triblock, and ABC triblock copolymers by the successive addition of different monomers. This review summarizes the current status of TERP and SBRP. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1–12, 2006  相似文献

The application of living anionic polymerization techniques for the functionalization of polymers and block copolymers is reviewed. The attachment of functional groups to polymeric chains of predetermined lengths and narrow molecular weight distributions is described. Carboxyls, hydroxyls, amines, halogens, double bonds, and many other functional groups can be placed at one or two ends in the center or evenly spaced along polymeric chains. Subsequent transformations of the functional groups further contribute to the versatility of such treatments. General methods based on the use, as terminators, of substituted haloalkanes, as well as the addition of living polymers or their initiators to diphenylethylenes, substituted with appropriate functional groups or molecules, are discussed. Another approach, based on the living polymerization of monomers with protected functional groups, is also discussed. It has been used for the preparation of polymers and copolymers with evenly spaced functional groups. The combination of living anionic polymerization techniques with controlled radical and cationic polymerizations is also described. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Perfluoroalkylsulfonyl chlorides and bromides initiate metal catalyzed free radical polymerization of both hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon monomers affording polymers with perfluoroalkyl end groups. In the case of styrene (S) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with Cu‐based catalysts the process affords polymers with a relatively narrow molecular weight distribution and linear dependence of molecular weight on conversion, suggesting that a living radical polymerization mechanism occurs. The orders of reaction in monomer, initiator and catalyst for these polymerizations were determined. In the case of PMMA, the detailed structure of a perfluorobutane chain‐end was determined by NMR analysis. Perfluoroalkylsulfonyl chlorides are stable in neutral aqueous media. This permits their use as initators for fluoroolefin polymerizations in H2O. Poly(tetrafluoroethylene‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) was obtained in good yield with few ionic end groups. The aqueous fluoroolefin polymerization appears to be catalyzed by metal zero species from the reactor walls. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 3313–3335, 2000  相似文献

Mechanistic transformation approach has been widely applied in polymer synthesis due to its unique feature combining structurally different polymers prepared by different polymerization mechanisms.Reported methods for the formation of block and graft copolymers through mechanistic transformation involve almost all polymerizations modes. However, certain polymerization processes require extensive purification processes, which can be time-consuming and problematic.Recent developments on controlled/living polymerizations involving radical and cationic mechanisms with the ability to control molecular weight and functionality led to new pathways for mechanistic transformations. In this mini-review,we systematically discussed relevant advances in the field through three main titles namely(i)from radical to cationic mechanism,(ii)from cationic to radical mechanism, and(iii)application of specific catalyst systems for both radical and cationic polymerizations.  相似文献

New graft copolymers of β‐pinene with methyl methacrylate (MMA) or butyl acrylate (BA) were synthesized by the combination of living cationic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). β‐Pinene polymers with predetermined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (MWDs) were prepared by living cationic polymerization with the 1‐phenylethyl chloride/TiCl4/Ti(OiPr)4/nBu4NCl initiating system, and the resultant polymers were brominated quantitatively by N‐bromosuccinamide in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile, yielding poly(β‐pinene) macroinitiators with different bromine contents (Br/β‐pinene unit molar ratio = 1.0 and 0.5 for macroinitiators a and b , respectively). The macroinitiators, in conjunction with CuBr and 2,2′‐bipyridine, were used to initiate ATRP of BA or MMA. With macroinitiator a or b , the bulk polymerization of BA induced a linear first‐order kinetic plot and gave graft copolymers with controlled molecular weights and MWDs; this indicated the living nature of these polymerizations. The bulk polymerization of MMA initiated with macroinitiator a was completed instantaneously and induced insoluble gel products. However, the controlled polymerization of MMA was achieved with macroinitiator b in toluene and resulted in the desired graft copolymers with controlled molecular weights and MWDs. The structures of the obtained graft copolymers of β‐pinene with (methyl)methacrylate were confirmed by 1H NMR spectra. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Our recent extensive research on Lewis acid catalysts with a weak base for the cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers led to unprecedented living reaction systems: fast living polymerization within 1–3 s; a wide choice of metal halides containing Al, Sn, Fe, Ti, Zr, Hf, Zn, Ga, In, Si, Ge, and Bi; and heterogeneously catalyzed living polymerization with Fe2O3. The use of added bases for the stabilization of the propagating carbocation and the appropriate selection of Lewis acid catalysts were crucial to the success of such new types of living polymerizations. In addition, the base‐stabilized living polymerization allowed the quantitative synthesis of star‐shaped polymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution via polymer‐linking reactions and the precision synthesis and self‐assembly of stimuli‐responsive block copolymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study describes a novel precision synthesis strategy for graft copolymers using Friedel–Crafts‐type termination reaction between a cationically prepared poly(styrene derivative) and the naphthyl side groups from a poly(vinyl ether) main chain. The pendant alkoxynaphthyl groups on the poly(vinyl ether) efficiently terminated the living cationic polymerization of p‐acetoxystyrene (AcOSt) with SnCl4 in the presence of ethyl acetate as an added base. This research provides the first example of a well‐defined graft copolymer prepared using this method. The resulting polymer contained 40 poly‐(AcOSt) branches, as calculated from the Mw determined via gel permeation chromatography–MALS analysis, which was in good agreement with the estimated number of branches obtained from 1H NMR analysis. The acetoxy groups in the grafted poly(AcOSt) chains were easily converted into phenolic hydroxy groups under basic conditions. The as‐obtained graft copolymer with poly(p‐hydroxystyrene) side chains exhibited a pH‐sensitive phase separation in water. The synthetic method for preparing the graft copolymers was also effective in the living cationic polymerizations of other styrene derivatives. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Novel styrene monomers bearing a five or seven‐membered spiroorthoester structure (SOE5, SOE7) were synthesized and their radical polymerizations as well as volume change during crosslinking of the obtained polymers were investigated. SOE5 and SOE7 were prepared from 4‐vinylbenzyl glycidyl ether and γ‐butyrolactone or ε‐caprolactone using boron trifluoride diethyl ether complex as a catalyst, respectively. Radical polymerizations of these monomers using 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) gave the corresponding styrene‐based polymers with keeping the spiroorthoester structures unchanged. These polymers could be transformed to networked polymers by heating with a sulfonium antimonate, a thermally latent cationic polymerization initiator. Copolymerization of SOE5 or SOE7 with styrene at various compositions was carried out to efficiently obtain the corresponding copolymers, respectively. These polymers and copolymers showed little volume shrinkage or slight volume expansion during the crosslinking. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Various silyl enol ethers were employed as quenchers for the living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate with the R Cl/RuCl2(PPh3)3/Al(Oi–Pr)3 initiating system. The most effective quencher was a silyl enol ether with an electron‐donating phenyl group conjugated with its double bond [CH2C(OSiMe3)(4‐MeOPh) ( 2a )] that afforded a halogen‐free polymer with a ketone terminal at a high end functionality [n ∼ 1]. Such silyl compounds reacted with the growing radical generated from the dormant chloride terminal and the ruthenium complex to give the ketone terminal via the release of the silyl group along with the chlorine that originated from the dormant terminal. In contrast, less conjugated silyl enol ethers such as CH2C(OSiMe3)Me were less effective in quenching the polymerization. The reactivity of the silyl compounds to the poly(methyl methacrylate) radical can be explained by the reactivity of their double bonds, namely, the monomer reactivity ratios of their model vinyl monomers without the silyloxyl groups. The lifetime of the living polymer terminal was also estimated by the quenching reaction mediated with 2a . © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4735–4748, 2000  相似文献

Various star‐shaped copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n‐butyl methacrylate (nBMA) were synthesized in one pot with RuCl2(PPh3)3‐catalyzed living radical polymerization and subsequent polymer linking reactions with divinyl compounds. Sequential living radical polymerization of nBMA and MMA in that order and vice versa, followed by linking reactions of the living block copolymers with appropriate divinyl compounds, afforded star block copolymers consisting of AB‐ or BA‐type block copolymer arms with controlled lengths and comonomer compositions in high yields (≥90%). The lengths and compositions of each unit varied with the amount of each monomer feed. Star copolymers with random copolymer arms were prepared by the living radical random copolymerization of MMA and nBMA followed by linking reactions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel synthetic strategy for the synthesis of graft copolymers is reported. Block copolymers containing segments with stable nitroxyl radicals side groups were first prepared by anionic polymerization, which were then used as a precursor for the subsequent nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) of styrene. This way, block–graft copolymers with polystyrene side chains grafted from one of the blocks were successfully synthesized in a controlled manner. In addition, block–graft copolymers with grafted polystyrene chains and a poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) block were subjected to hydrolysis to yield the corresponding amphiphilic polymers. The structures and the molecular weight characteristics of the polymers were characterized by spectral and chromatographic analyses. The surface morphology of thus obtained polymers was also investigated by microscopic techniques. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. 2020 , 58, 62–69  相似文献

2‐Phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromopropanoate was successfully used as an initiator in consecutive living radical polymerization routes, such as metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated free‐radical polymerization, to produce various types of acrylonitrile‐containing polymers, such as styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐polyacrylonitrile, and polystyrene‐b‐polyacrylonitrile. The kinetic data were obtained for the metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of styrene–acrylonitrile. All the obtained polymers were characterized with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The living free radical polymerizations of three “less activated” monomers (LAMs), vinyl acetate, N‐vinylcarbazole, and N‐vinylpyrrolidone, were successfully achieved in the presence of a disulfide, isopropylxanthic disulfide (DIP), using 2,2′‐azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator. The living behaviors of polymerizations of LAMs are evidenced by first‐order kinetic plots and linear increase of molecular weights (Mns) of the polymers with monomer conversions, while keeping the relatively low molecular weight distributions, respectively. The effects of reaction temperatures and molar ratios of components on the polymerization were also investigated in detail. The polymerization proceeded with macromolecular design via interchange of xanthate process, where xanthate formed in situ from reaction of AIBN and DIP. The architectures of the polymers obtained were characterized by GPC, 1H NMR, UV–vis, and MALDI‐TOF‐MS spectra, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A combination of nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization and living anionic polymerization was used to synthesize a series of well‐defined graft (co)polymers with “V‐shaped” and “Y‐shaped” branches. The polymer main chain is a copolymer of styrene and p‐chloromethylstyrene (PS‐co‐PCMS) prepared via nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization. The V‐shaped branches were prepared through coupling reaction of polystyrene macromonomer, carrying 1,1‐diphenylethylene terminus, with polystyryllithium or polyisoprenyllithium. The Y‐shaped branches were prepared throughfurther polymerization initiated by the V‐shaped anions. The obtained branches, carrying a living anion at the middle (V‐shaped) or at the end of the third segment (Y‐shaped), were coupled in situ with pendent benzyl chloride of PS‐co‐PCMS to form the target graft (co)polymers. The purified graft (co)polymers were analyzed by size exclusion chromatography equipped with a multiangle light scattering detector and a viscometer. The result shows that the viscosities and radii of gyration of the branched polymers are remarkably smaller than those of linear polystyrene. In addition, V‐shaped product adopts a more compact conformation in dilute solution than the Y‐shaped analogy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of poly(styrene-b-tetrahydrofuran (THF)-b-styrene) triblock copolymers was performed by transformation from living cationic into living radical polymerization, using 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (4-hydroxy-TEMPO) as a transforming agent. Sodium 4-oxy-TEMPO, derived from 4-hydroxy-TEMPO, reacted with the living poly(THF), which was prepared by cationic polymerization of THF using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid anhydride as an initiator, resulting in quantitative formation of the poly(THF) with TEMPO at both the chain ends. The resulting polymers were able to serve as a polymeric counter radical for the radical polymerization of styrene by benzoyl peroxide, to give the corresponding triblock copolymer in quantitative efficiency. The polymerization was found to proceed in accordance with a living mechanism, because the conversion of styrene linearly increased over time, and the molar ratio of styrene to THF units in the copolymer also increased as a result of increasing the conversion. The TEM pictures demonstrated that the resulting copolymers promoted microphase segregation. It was found that the films of these copolymers showed contact angles intermediate between those of poly(THF) and of polystyrene. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
