In the present study, a jet superposition modeling approach is explored to model group-hole nozzle sprays, in which multiple spray jets interact with each other. An equation to estimate the merged jet velocity from each of the individual jets was derived based on momentum conservation for equivalent gas jets. Diverging and converging group-hole nozzles were also considered. The model was implemented as a sub-grid-scale submodel in a Lagrangian Drop–Eulerian Gas CFD model for spray predictions. Spray tip penetration predicted using the present superposition model was validated against experimental results for parallel, diverging and converging group-hole nozzles as a function of the angle between the two holes at various injection and ambient pressures. The results show that spray tip penetration decreases as the group hole diverging or converging angle increases. However, the spray penetration of the converging group-hole nozzle arrangement is more sensitive to the angle between the two holes compared to diverging nozzle because the radial momentum component is converted to axial momentum during the jet–jet impingement process in the converging group-hole nozzle case. The modeling results also indicate that for converging group-hole nozzles the merged sprays become ellipsoidal in cross-section far downstream of the nozzle exit with larger converging angles, indicating increased air entrainment.  相似文献

The present study describes an experimental work to investigate the effect of a nozzle exit reflector on a supersonic jet that is discharged from a convergent–divergent nozzle with a design Mach number of 2.0. An annular reflector is installed at the nozzle exit and its diameter is varied. A high-quality spark schlieren optical system is used to visualize detailed jet structures with and without the reflector. Impact pressure measurement using a pitot probe is also carried out to quantify the reflector’s effect on the supersonic jet which is in the range from an over-expanded to a moderately under-expanded state. The results obtained show that for over-expanded jets, the reflector substantially increases the jet spreading rate and reduces the supersonic length of the jet, compared with moderately under-expanded jets. The reflector’s effect appears more significant in imperfectly expanded jets that have strong shock cell structures, but is negligible in correctly expanded jet.  相似文献

The present paper describes experimental investigation on the flow pattern and hydrodynamic effect of underwater gas jets from supersonic and sonic nozzles operated in correct- and imperfect expansion conditions. The flow visualizations show that jetting is the flow regime for the submerged gas injection at a high speed in the parameter range under consideration. The obtained results indicate that high-speed gas jets in still water induce large pressure pulsations upstream of the nozzle exit and the presence of shock-cell structure in the over- and under-expanded jets leads to an increase in the intensity of the jet-induced hydrodynamic pressure.  相似文献

Hybrid RANS/LES simulations of two incompressible jets are performed with the Zonal Detached Eddy Simulation (ZDES). Two functioning modes of the ZDES for the selection of RANS and DES areas are evaluated, namely the user-defined mode (mode 1) and the global- or automatic- mode (mode 2). The RANS-to-LES transition occurs quickly downstream of the nozzle exit and is found to involve the same physics as a laminar to turbulent transition with vortex pairing near the nozzle exit. The effect of the delay in the RANS-to-LES transition on the jet flow development is analyzed. In particular, the delay in the formation of small-scale turbulent structures results in too high turbulence levels in the mixing layers. Furthermore, it is shown, for two cases, that the injection of synthetic turbulence at the nozzle inlet, originally targeted at reproducing the experimental turbulence level in the jet core, has a significant impact on the mixing layer as it accelerates the RANS-to-LES transition, reduces the spatial wavelength of the vortex pairing and promotes the production of fine-scale turbulence which leads to a better agreement with experiments.  相似文献

The acoustic and flow characteristics of a supersonic tapered jet were measured for free and shrouded flow configurations. Measurements were performed for a full range of pressure ratios including over- and underexpanded and design conditions. The supersonic tapered jet is issued from a converging-diverging nozzle with a 31 rectangular slotted throat and a conical diverging section leading to a circular exit. The jet was compared to circular and rectangular supersonic jets operating at identical conditions. The distinct feature of the jet is the absence of screech tones in the entire range of operation. Its near-field pressure fluctuations have a wide band spectrum in the entire range of measurements, for Mach numbers of 1 to 2.5, for over- and underexpanded conditions. The free jet's spreading rate is nearly constant and similar to the rectangular jet, and in a shroud, the pressure drop it is inducing is linearly proportional to the primary jet Mach number. This behavior persisted in high adverse pressure gradients at overexpanded conditions, and with nozzle divergence angles of up to 35°, no inside flow separation was observed.  相似文献

Detailed near-field structures of highly underexpanded sonic free jets have been investigated with the help of computational fluid dynamics. Two-dimensional, axisymmetric Euler equations have been chosen to predict the underexpanded jets, and the third-order total variation diminishing finite-difference scheme has been applied to solve the system of governing equations numerically. Several different nozzles have been employed to investigate the influence of the nozzle geometry on the near-field structures of highly underexpanded sonic free jets. The results obtained show that the distance from the nozzle exit to the Mach disk is an increasing function of the jet–pressure ratio, which also significantly influences the shape of the jet boundary. The diameter of the Mach disk increases with the jet–pressure ratio, and it is further significantly influenced by the nozzle geometry, unlike the distance of the Mach disk from the nozzle exit. However, such a dependence on the nozzle geometry is no longer found when an effective-diameter concept is taken into account for the flow from a sharp-edged orifice. A good correlation in the diameters of the Mach disk is obtained, so that the near-field structure of highly underexpanded sonic free jets is a unique function of the pressure ratio, regardless of the nozzle geometry.  相似文献

An experimental and numerical study of underexpanded free sonic jet flows issuing from rectangular, elliptical and slot nozzles has been undertaken. Aspect ratios (AR) of 1, 2, and 4 are described at pressure ratios (exit plane pressure to ambient pressure), of 2 and 3. There is good qualitative agreement between the experimental observations and the numerical predictions. In the case of rectangular jets, a complex system of shock waves forming the incident shock system is identified. This shock wave system originates at the corners of the nozzle exits, and proceeds downstream. Mach reflections are found to occur on the incident shock wave surface as well as the presence of a Mach disk terminating the first jet cell. This Mach disk has the shape of a square, a hexagon, or an octagon depending on the nozzle shape. For slot and elliptical jets, the formation of the incident shock wave was not observed along the minor axis plane of the nozzle for AR > 2. The incident shock wave was observed to originate downstream of the nozzle exit in the major axis plane. This wave system undergoes a transition to Mach reflection as it propagates downstream of the nozzle exit. In all cases tested, the shape of the jet boundary is significantly distorted. In rectangular jets, the narrowing of the jet boundary along the diagonal axis of the nozzle exit is observed, and in the case of the elliptical and slot jets axis switching is noted.  相似文献

Oscillation flow induced by underwater supersonic gas jets   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper describes an experimental study on the oscillation flow characteristics of submerged supersonic gas jets issued from Laval nozzles. The flow pattern during the jet development and the jet expansion feedback phenomenon are studied using a high-speed camera and a pressure measurement system. The experimental results indicate that along the downstream distance, the jet has three flow regimes: (1) momentum jet; (2) buoyant jet; (3) plume. In the region near the nozzle exit a so-called bulge phenomenon is found. Bulging of the jet occurs many times before the more violent jet expansion feedback occurs. During the feedback process, the jet diameter can become several times that of the original one depending on the jet Mach number. The frequencies of the jet bulging and the jet expansion feedback are measured.  相似文献

Experimental results on the shock structure of dual co-axial jets are presented. The effects of the geometric parameters of the inner nozzle, jet static pressure ratio (ratio of the exit plane static pressures of the inner and outer nozzles) and the ratio of outer to inner nozzle throat area on the shock structure were studied. A superimposed outer and inner jet structure was observed in the schlieren photographs. The inner flow is compressed by the outer flow resulting in the formation of a Mach disc and an exit shock. A parameter incorporating the effect of Mach number of the inner nozzle and jet static pressure ratio was found to correlate the observations regarding the Mach disc location.  相似文献

The flow, turbulence, and noise parameters of cold and hot jets flowing out of nozzles of different types at subsonic and supersonic velocities are calculated using the high-resolution RANS/ILES method. The effect of the Mach number and the temperature at the nozzle exit on the flow features, the turbulent fluctuations of the velocity, the static pressure, and the temperature, together with the overall noise level is analyzed for all the jets considered. The accuracy of the calculations is confirmed by means of comparing with the available experimental data concerning certain parameters.  相似文献

Turbulent opposed jet (TOJ) burners are an interesting test case for fundamental combustion research and a good benchmark for the available modelling approaches. However, these opposed jet flames strongly depend on the turbulence generation inside the nozzle, which is usually achieved through a perforated plate upstream of the nozzle exit. The present work investigates the flow from these perforated plates and the subsequent turbulence generation in great detail. We present results from highly-resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of the in-nozzle flow in turbulent opposed jets alongside state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) at standard and high repetition rates taken inside a glass nozzle. The in-nozzle PIV data provides the LES inflow conditions with unprecedented detail, which are used to follow the initial jet development behaviour known from PIV, before jet coalescence, turbulence production and decay further downstream in the nozzles are successfully predicted. In regions where the PIV experiment suffers from inherent limitations like reflections and the velocity bias, the LES data is available to still obtain a detailed picture of the flow. The sensitivity of the simulations to various physical and numerical parameters is discussed in detail. Results from LES and PIV are compared qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of first and second moments of velocity, temporal autocorrelations, and energy density spectra. Significant deviations are found in the frequency (20%) and strength of vortex shedding from the inlet plane only, whereas the qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulation and experiment is otherwise excellent throughout, implying that a successful large eddy simulation of a turbulent opposed jet can be performed in a domain that includes the perforated plates.  相似文献

In present research, two turbulent opposed impinging air jets issuing from triangular nozzles with fixed and variable exit velocity ratios and different nozzle-to-nozzle distances have been studied numerically and then compared with rectangular and circular nozzles. The finite volume method has been applied for solving mass and momentum equations. The turbulence model being used here is k-ε RNG. Distributions of pressure, turbulence, kinetic energy and its dissipation rate in various regions especially on the impingement regions have been obtained with high accuracy. Study of the nozzle geometries has shown the advantage of triangular nozzles over other geometries. First, the triangle’s base in nozzle geometry has an important role in our study case which, mixing two flows and regions with high turbulence intensity, directly depends on it. Second, our results show that circular and rectangular nozzles have less efficiency than triangular nozzles in mixing applications. Third and last, it was found that the radial jet being created by opposed jets has some similarities to free jets. In this investigation, air in standard atmospheric pressure has been applied as working fluid.  相似文献

The freejet characteristics of radially lobed nozzles were studied experimentally. Schlieren photographs of the freejets revealed that the lobes of the nozzles gave rise to alternate expansion-compression regions. For two of the lobed nozzles the potential core was reduced by a factor of three relative to the conical nozzle tested. The jet spread and the shear layer thickness of the lobed nozzles were considerably higher than those for the conical nozzle. The jet width and the shear layer thickness were higher in the major plane; however, the shear layer growth rate was higher in the minor plane of the lobed nozzles. Jet axial thrust measurements revealed a thrust loss of 14% for two of the lobed nozzles tested.  相似文献

Compressible subsonic turbulent starting jet with a relatively large Reynolds number of significant practical importance is investigated using large eddy simulation (LES), starting from a smooth contraction nozzle. The computational domain of truncated conical shape is determined through the comparison of the time-averaged numerical solution with the particle imaging velocimetry measurements for the steady jet. It is shown that the starting jet consists of a leading vortex ring followed by a quasi-steady jet, and the instantaneous velocity field exhibits contraction and expansion zones, corresponding to the high pressure (HP) and low pressure (LP) regions formed by the convecting vortex rings, and are related to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The thin boundary layer inside the smooth contraction nozzle evolves into a shear layer at the nozzle exit and develops with the downstream penetration of the jet. Using λ 2 criterion, the formation and evolution of the vortical structures are temporally visualized, illustrating distortion of vortex rings into lobed shapes prior to break-down. Rib-shape streamwise vortex filaments exist in the braid region between a pair of consecutive vortex rings due to secondary instabilities. Finally, formation and dynamics of hairpin vortices in the shear layer is identified.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of nozzle geometry on the mixing characteristics and turbulent transport phenomena in turbulent jets. The nozzle geometry examined were round, square, cross, eight-corner star, six-lobe daisy, equilateral triangle as well as ellipse and rectangle each with aspect ratio of 2. The jets were produced from sharp linear contoured nozzles which may be considered intermediate to the more widely studied smooth contraction and orifice nozzles. A high resolution particle image velocimetry was used to conduct detailed velocity measurements in the near and intermediate regions. It was observed that the lengths of the potential cores and the growth rates of turbulence intensities on the jet centerline are comparable with those of the orifice jets. The results indicate that the decay and spreading rates are lower than reported for orifice jets but higher than results for smooth contoured jets. The jets issuing from the elliptic and rectangular nozzles have the best mixing performance while the least effective mixing was observed in the star jet. The distributions of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent diffusion clearly showed that turbulent transport phenomena are quite sensitive to nozzle geometry. Due to the specific shape of triangular and daisy jets, the profiles of mean velocity and turbulent quantities are close to each other in their minor and major planes while in the elliptic and rectangular jets are considerably different. They also exhibit more isotropic behavior compared to the elliptic and rectangular jets. In spite of significant effects of nozzle geometry on mean velocity and turbulent quantities, the integral length scales are independent of changes in nozzle geometry.  相似文献

Experiments were made with annular nozzles with a central rod projecting beyond the nozzle to study the influence of the thickness of the nozzle gap, the curvature of the gap, the conical angle of the sonic nozzle, and the pressure difference on the length of the first roll of an underexparided jet. An expression was obtained for calculating the roll length as a function of these parameters for pressure differences greater than 4.4.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 167–171, July–August, 1980.  相似文献

Miniature axisymmetric supersonic nozzles were produced with exit Mach numbers ranging from 1.0 to 2.8 by forming Pyrex® capillary tubing of 0.6 and 1.2 mm inside diameter into converging-diverging channels. The nozzle contours were measured and were found to compare favorably to ideal solutions given by the axisymmetric method of characteristics. In addition, the surfaces of these nozzles were quite smooth, providing featureless flows at perfect expansion. Schlieren visualization and pitot pressure measurements of the resulting microjets were compared to the literature available for jets produced by larger-scale nozzles. A postponed transition to turbulence is noted in these microjets due to their low Reynolds number. The pitot pressure on centerline is nearly uniform at perfect expansion over core lengths up to 12 nozzle exit diameters. Supersonic microjet nozzles thus provide a more effective small-scale high-pressure gas delivery device than do sonic nozzles of comparable scale at equivalent mass flow rates. Supersonic microjets may therefore have several industrial applications.List of symbols * boundary layer displacement thickness, mm - d diameter of nozzle exit, mm - L length of nozzle diverging section, mm - L c inviscid core length, mm - L s supersonic region length, mm - M c convective Mach number - M e exit Mach number - P b backpressure at nozzle exit, (equal to ambient pressure in this experiment) - P e exit pressure of the supersonic jet - P be exit pressure ratio (P b /P e ) - P p impingement pressure (pitot pressure) - P 0 stagnation pressure supplied to nozzle - P n overall pressure ratio (P 0/P b ,) - r radial dimension (cylindrical coordinate system), mm - r 0 radius of throat, mm - Re d Reynolds number, based on nozzle exit diameter - V e exit velocity, m/s - x axial dimension (cylindrical coordinate system), mm This research was sponsored by National Science Foundation Grant DMI 9400119, as part of a study of the assist-gas dynamics of laser cutting.  相似文献
