The paper reports on particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in turbulent slot jets bounded by two solid walls with the separation distance smaller than the jet width (5–40%). In the far-field such jets are known to manifest features of quasi-two dimensional, two component turbulence. Stereoscopic and tomographic PIV systems were used to analyse local flows. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was applied to extract coherent modes of the velocity fluctuations. The measurements were performed both in the initial region close to the nozzle exit and in the far fields of the developed turbulent slot jets for Re  10,000. A POD analysis in the initial region indicates a correlation between quasi-2D vortices rolled-up in the shear layer and local flows in cross-stream planes. While the near-field turbulence shows full 3D features, the wall-normal velocity fluctuations day out gradually due to strong wall-damping resulting in an almost two-component turbulence. On the other hand, the longitudinal vortex rolls take over to act as the main agents in wall-normal and spanwise mixing and momentum transfer. The quantitative analysis indicates that the jet meandering amplitude was aperiodically modulated when arrangement of the large-scale quasi-2D vortices changed between asymmetric and symmetric pattern relatively to the jet axis. The paper shows that the dynamics of turbulent slot jets are more complex than those of 2D, plane and rectangular 3D jets. In particular, the detected secondary longitudinal vortex filaments and meandering modulation is expected to be important for turbulent transport and mixing in slot jets. This issue requires further investigations.

The development region of a free round turbulent jet was experimentally investigated in order to determine the dependence of the jet development on the exit conditions. In particular the influence of the exit conditions on the entrainment rate in both the axisymmetrix mixing layer region and at a distance of 20D from the nozzle was investigated. The entrainment rate at 20D depends noticeably on the exit boundary layer state, i.e. laminar or turbulent, and on the turbulence intensity of the core. A laminar exit boundary layer showed the highest value of entrainment rate. A turbulent one reduced the entrainment rate at 20D by 15%. A grid placed at the nozzle exit, in order to increase the turbulence intensity of the core, reduced the entrainment rate at 20D by 40%. It must be mentioned that this grid also disturbed the exit boundary layer. An empirical relation for the entrainment rate at the end of the mixing layer region as a function of the mixing layer parameters, is successful in predicting the entrainment rate at 20D within an accuracy of 5%. This result suggests a strong dependence of the jet development region on mixing layer processes, i.e. the development of organized structures and their coalescence. Possibly there is no asymptotic region which is fully independent of the mixing layer processes, and which is not more or less influenced by the exit conditions via the influence on these processes.

This paper reports on the simulation of the near-nozzle region of an isothermal Mach 0.6 jet at a Reynolds number of 100,000 exhausting from a round nozzle geometry. The flow inside the nozzle and the free jet outside the nozzle are computed simultaneously by a high-order accurate, multi-block, large eddy simulation (LES) code with overset grid capability. The total number of grid points at which the governing equations are solved is about 50 million. The main emphasis of the simulation is to capture the high frequency noise generation that takes place in the shear layers of the jet within the first few diameters downstream of the nozzle exit. Although we have attempted to generate fully turbulent boundary layers inside the nozzle by means of a special turbulent inflow generation procedure, an analysis of the simulation results supports the fact that the state of the nozzle exit boundary layer should be characterized as transitional rather than fully turbulent. This is believed to be most likely due to imperfections in the inflow generation method. Details of the computational methodology are presented together with an analysis of the simulation results. A comparison of the far field noise spectrum in the sideline direction with experimental data at similar flow conditions is also carried out. Additional noise generation due to vortex pairing in the region immediately downstream of the nozzle exit is also observed. In a second simulation, the effect of the nozzle exit boundary layer thickness on the vortex pairing Strouhal frequency (based on nozzle diameter) and its harmonics is demonstrated. The limitations and deficiencies of the present study are identified and discussed. We hope that the lessons learned in this study will help guide future research activities towards resolving the pending issues identified in this work.

This paper reports an experimental study on the effect of the fuel nozzle orifice geometry on the stability of turbulent non-premixed methane flame. Different internal geometries (orifice equivalent diameter, length to diameter ratio and contraction angle) of a circular and a rectangular nozzle with an aspect ratio of 2 were examined. The strength of the co-airflow was also varied to assess its impact on the jet flame stability. The experimental data revealed that the level of turbulence in the jet near-field is, in general, higher for the rectangular nozzle in comparison with the circular nozzle. This high level of turbulence was found to accelerate the liftoff transition of the attached flame. The results revealed also that there is a clear interplay between the flame liftoff height and the jet flow characteristics. That is, a rectangular jet, which spreads faster along the minor axis and generates higher near-field turbulence, results in a flame base sitting closer to the nozzle exit in comparison with that of its circular nozzle counterpart. Finally, the presence of a moderate co-airflow resulted in a higher flame liftoff velocity and height. It also led to the appearance of a hysteresis phenomenon in the low jet velocity range regardless of the exit orifice shape of the fuel nozzle.

Large-scale organized vortical structures were studied experimentally in a free swirling jet of air experiencing vortex precession (PVC) at ambient conditions. Detailed measurements were performed in the region near the nozzle exit using phase-locked LDV and PIV, at a Reynolds number of Re ?? 24,400 and a swirl parameter S ?? 1.0. The investigation allowed reconstruction of the time-averaged flowfield, with the associated distribution of turbulent fluctuations, the phase-locked structure of the jet and the associated precessing vortex structure. An original joint analysis of power spectra and probability density functions of velocity data led to quantification of the PVC effect on turbulent fluctuations. This analysis showed that the PVC contribution can be properly separated from the background random turbulence, reproducing the results of phase-locked measurements. It is found that the background turbulence in the near field is substantially weaker if compared to the coherent fluctuations induced by vortex precession.

A modal spectrum technique was used to study coherent instability modes (both axisymmetric and azimuthal) triggered by naturally occurring disturbances in a circular jet. This technique was applied to a high Reynolds number (400,000) jet for both untripped (transitional) and tripped (turbulent) nozzle exit boundary layers, with both cases having a core turbulence level of 0.15%. The region up to the end of the potential core was dominated by the axisymmetric mode, with the azimuthal modes dominating further downstream. The growth of the azimuthal modes was observed closer to the nozzle exit for the jet with a transitional boundary layer. Whether for locally parallel flow or slowly diverging flow, even at low levels of acoustic forcing, the inviscid linear theory is seen to be inadequate for predicting the amplitude of the forced mode. In contrast, the energy integral approach reasonably predicts the evolution of the forced mode.

A synthetic turbulence generation (STG) method for subsonic and supersonic flows at low and moderate Reynolds numbers to provide inflow distributions of zonal Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) – large-eddy simulation (LES) methods is presented. The STG method splits the LES inflow region into three planes where a local velocity signal is decomposed from the turbulent flow properties of the upstream RANS solution. Based on the wall-normal position and the local flow Reynolds number, specific length and velocity scales with different vorticity content are imposed at the inlet plane of the boundary layer. The quality of the STG method for incompressible and compressible zero-pressure gradient boundary layers is shown by comparing the zonal RANS–LES data with pure LES, pure RANS, and direct numerical simulation (DNS) solutions. The distributions of the time and spanwise wall-shear stress, Reynolds stress distributions, and two point correlations of the zonal RANS–LES simulations are smooth in the transition region and in good agreement with the pure LES and reference DNS findings. The STG approach reduces the RANS-to-LES transition length to less than four boundary-layer thicknesses.

An experimental study on elliptic nozzles with hybrid flat- and inclined-sections is reported here. The hybrid flat and inclined sections are imposed along either the major- or minor-plane of the nozzles (HIN?A and B nozzles respectively). For HIN?A, results show prevalent pairings between adjacent vortex filaments and induced vortex-loops in the immediate vicinity of the flat-section to produce coalesced vortex roll-ups. Once they detach entirely from the nozzle, they proceed to undergo flow changes resembling that of conventional elliptic jets. HIN?B also leads to near-field vortex pairings but produce discrete inclined vortex roll-ups instead, with accompanying delay in rib structure formations. The roles of induced vortex-loops are significantly more limited in the present elliptic HIN than circular HIN investigated previously, due to the dominance of elliptic braid vortices. HIN?A produces significantly larger centerline velocity decay, as well as higher turbulence levels in the near vicinity of the nozzle exit. Vectoring of axial jet momentum is more apparent for HIN?B, where cross-stream entrainment is also relatively larger. Half-jet width results also demonstrate that both nozzle types eventually produce elliptic jets that undergo axis-switching. Lastly, momentum thickness results suggest that the present nozzle lip-modifications significantly enhance mixing characteristics along the plane upon which they are imposed in both HIN?A and B.

In present research, two turbulent opposed impinging air jets issuing from triangular nozzles with fixed and variable exit velocity ratios and different nozzle-to-nozzle distances have been studied numerically and then compared with rectangular and circular nozzles. The finite volume method has been applied for solving mass and momentum equations. The turbulence model being used here is k-ε RNG. Distributions of pressure, turbulence, kinetic energy and its dissipation rate in various regions especially on the impingement regions have been obtained with high accuracy. Study of the nozzle geometries has shown the advantage of triangular nozzles over other geometries. First, the triangle’s base in nozzle geometry has an important role in our study case which, mixing two flows and regions with high turbulence intensity, directly depends on it. Second, our results show that circular and rectangular nozzles have less efficiency than triangular nozzles in mixing applications. Third and last, it was found that the radial jet being created by opposed jets has some similarities to free jets. In this investigation, air in standard atmospheric pressure has been applied as working fluid.

The spatial structure of the flow in a supersonic underexpanded jet exhausting from a convergent nozzle with vortex generators (chevrons) at the exit is experimentally studied. Exhaustion of a supersonic underexpanded jet from a nozzle with chevrons at the nozzle exit is numerically simulated with the use of the Fluent commercial software package. The experimental and numerical data are demonstrated to be in reasonable agreement. The influence of chevrons on the process of gas mixing is estimated.

Miniature electromagnetic flap actuators are developed and mounted on the periphery of the nozzle exit of an axisymmetric jet to induce various flow modes and enhance mixing processes. It is demonstrated that the flap actuators can significantly modify the large-scale vortical structures. In particular, when the flaps are driven in anti-phase on either side of the jet, alternately inclined and bent vortex rings are generated, and the jet bifurcates into two branches. Since the vortex rings are formed at the very vicinity of the nozzle exit, the bifurcation is accomplished as close as x/D=3.

A density-based solver with the classical fourth-order accurate Runge-Kutta temporal discretization scheme was developed and applied to study under-expanded jets issued through millimetre-size nozzles for applications in high-pressure direct-injection (DI) gaseous-fuelled propulsion systems. Both large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence modelling techniques were used to evaluate the performance of the new code. The computational results were compared both quantitatively and qualitatively against available data from the literature. After initial evaluation of the code, the computational framework was used in conjunction with RANS modelling (k-ω SST) to investigate the effect of nozzle exit geometry on the characteristics of gaseous jets issued from millimetre-size nozzles. Cylindrical nozzles with various length to diameter ratios, namely 5, 10 and 20, in addition to a diverging conical nozzle, were studied. This study is believed to be the first to provide a direct comparison between RANS and LES within the context of nozzle exit profiling for advanced high-pressure injection systems with the formation of under-expanded jets. It was found that reducing the length of the straight section of the nozzle by 50% resulted in a slightly higher level of under-expansion (∼2.6% higher pressure at the nozzle exit) and ∼1% higher mass flow rate. It was also found that a nozzle with 50% shorter length resulted in ∼6% longer jet penetration length. At a constant nozzle pressure ratio (NPR), a lower nozzle length to diameter ratio resulted in a noticeably higher jet penetration. It was found that with a diverging conical nozzle, a fairly higher penetration length could be achieved if an under-expanded jet formed downstream of the nozzle exit compared to a jet issued from a straight nozzle with the same NPR. This was attributed to the radial restriction of the flow and consequently formation of a relatively smaller reflected shock angle. With the conical nozzle used in this study and a 30 bar injection pressure, an under-expanded hydrogen jet exhibited ∼60% higher penetration length compared to an under-expanded nitrogen jet at 100 μs after start of injection. Moreover, the former jet exhibited ∼22% higher penetration compared to a nitrogen jet issued through the conical profile with 150 bar injection pressure.

Turbulent opposed jet (TOJ) burners are an interesting test case for fundamental combustion research and a good benchmark for the available modelling approaches. However, these opposed jet flames strongly depend on the turbulence generation inside the nozzle, which is usually achieved through a perforated plate upstream of the nozzle exit. The present work investigates the flow from these perforated plates and the subsequent turbulence generation in great detail. We present results from highly-resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of the in-nozzle flow in turbulent opposed jets alongside state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) at standard and high repetition rates taken inside a glass nozzle. The in-nozzle PIV data provides the LES inflow conditions with unprecedented detail, which are used to follow the initial jet development behaviour known from PIV, before jet coalescence, turbulence production and decay further downstream in the nozzles are successfully predicted. In regions where the PIV experiment suffers from inherent limitations like reflections and the velocity bias, the LES data is available to still obtain a detailed picture of the flow. The sensitivity of the simulations to various physical and numerical parameters is discussed in detail. Results from LES and PIV are compared qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of first and second moments of velocity, temporal autocorrelations, and energy density spectra. Significant deviations are found in the frequency (20%) and strength of vortex shedding from the inlet plane only, whereas the qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulation and experiment is otherwise excellent throughout, implying that a successful large eddy simulation of a turbulent opposed jet can be performed in a domain that includes the perforated plates.

In this work, the turbulent mixing of a confined coaxial jet in air is investigated by means of simultaneous particle image velocimetry and planar laser induced fluorescence of the acetone seeded flow injection. The jet is injected into a turbulent duct flow at atmospheric pressure through a 90 ° pipe bend. Measurements are conducted in a small scale windtunnel at constant mass flow rates and three modes of operation: isothermal steady jet injection at a Dean number of 20000 (R e d =32000), pulsed isothermal injection at a Womersley number of 65 and steady injection at elevated jet temperatures of ΔT=50 K and ΔT=100 K. The experiment is aimed at providing statistically converged quantities of velocity, mass fraction, turbulent fluctuations and turbulent mass flux at several downstream locations. Stochastic error convergence over the number of samples is assessed within the outer turbulent shear layer. From 3000 samples the statistical error of time-averaged velocity and mass fraction is below 1 % while the error of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent mass flux components is in the of range 5-6 %. Profiles of axial velocity and turbulence intensity immediately downstream of the bend exit are in good agreement with hot-wire measurements from literature. During pulsed jet injection strong asymmetric growing of shear layer vortices lead to a skewed mass fraction profile in comparison with steady injection. Phase averaging of single shot PLIF-PIV measurements allows to track the asymmetric shear layer vortex evolvement and flow breakdown during a pulsation cycle with a resolution of 10°. Steady injection with increased jet temperature supports mixing downstream from 6 nozzle diameters onward.

Using the detailed numerical simulation data of primary atomization, the liquid surface instability development that leads to atomization is characterized. The numerical results are compared with a theoretical analysis of liquid–gas layer for a parameter range close to high-speed Diesel jet fuel injection. For intermittent and short-duration Diesel injection, the aerodynamic surface interaction and transient head formation play an important role. The present numerical setting excludes nozzle disturbances to primarily investigate this interfacial instability mechanism and the role of jet head. The first disturbed area is the jet head region, and the generated disturbances are fed into the upstream region through the gas phase. This leads to the viscous boundary layer instability development on the liquid jet core. By temporal tracking of surface pattern development including the phase velocity and stability regime and by the visualization of vortex structures near the boundary layer region, it is suggested that the instability mode is the Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) mode similar to the turbulent transition of solid-wall boundary layer. It is also demonstrated that the jet head and the liquid core play an interacting role, thus the jet head cannot be neglected in Diesel injection. In this study, this type of boundary layer instability has been demonstrated as a possible mechanism of primary atomization, especially for high-speed straight liquid jets. The effect of nozzle turbulence is a challenging but important issue, and it should be examined in the future.

An experimental investigation was made of the initial-section flow of axisymmetric helium, air, and freon-12 jets in a parallel air flow for two different velocity profiles at the nozzle exit near the boundary of the jet. In one case, the velocity profile was determined by boundary layers on the nozzle walls; in the other case, it was produced artificially by means of a honeycomb of tubes of variable length. Measurements were made of the profiles of the mean and the pulsation velocity and the temperature. The flow was also photographed. The investigations showed that, depending on the initial conditions, the intensity of mixing of the jets in the initial section at Reynolds numbers Re 104 (calculated using the jet diameter) can change from the level determined by molecular diffusion to the level characteristic of developed turbulent flow. The flow structure in the annular mixing layer also depends strongly on the initial conditions. The observed ordered structures in the mixing layer are related to a section of development of perturbations near the nozzle. The ordered structures are strongly influenced by the effect on the jet of acoustic vibrations from an external source. When the initial velocity profile is produced by the honeycomb, the transition to developed turbulence may be due to the development of long-wavelength perturbations or to the development of small-scale turbulence generated by the flow over the end of the honeycomb.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 18–24, July–August, 1980.We thank V. Mixing in a coaxial jet mixer was investigated at variable initial conditions simultaneously using PIV and PLIF methods. Velocity and concentration fields were measured at two spatial resolutions: across the mixer and in a small area at its axis resolving Kolmogorov's scale. Jet exit conditions were modeled by varying flow rate (3⋅103 ≤ Red ≤ 1.78⋅104) and by applying vortex generators (tabs) at the jet exit. The study was executed within a transition flow region. Nevertheless, it is possible to claim that in the self-similarity flow region mean flow parameters do not depend on the initial conditions but turbulence does. The influence of the initial conditions is manifested in turbulent characteristics measured at a high spatial resolution and in the size of fine structures of the studied flows.
