We show that the existence of a non-metrizable compact subspace of a topological group G often implies that G contains an uncountable supersequence (a copy of the one-point compactification of an uncountable discrete space). The existence of uncountable supersequences in a topological group has a strong impact on bounded subsets of the group. For example, if a topological group G contains an uncountable supersequence and K is a closed bounded subset of G which does not contain uncountable supersequences, then any subset A of K is bounded in G?(K?A). We also show that every precompact Abelian topological group H can be embedded as a closed subgroup into a precompact Abelian topological group G such that H is bounded in G and all bounded subsets of the quotient group G/H are finite. This complements Ursul's result on closed embeddings of precompact groups to pseudocompact groups.  相似文献

We study compact, countably compact, pseudocompact, and functionally bounded sets in extensions of topological groups. A property P is said to be a three space property if, for every topological group G and a closed invariant subgroup N of G, the fact that both groups N and G/N have P implies that G also has P. It is shown that if all compact (countably compact) subsets of the groups N and G/N are metrizable, then G has the same property. However, the result cannot be extended to pseudocompact subsets, a counterexample exists under p=c. Another example shows that extensions of groups do not preserve the classes of realcompact, Dieudonné complete and μ-spaces: one can find a pseudocompact, non-compact Abelian topological group G and an infinite, closed, realcompact subgroup N of G such that G/N is compact and all functionally bounded subsets of N are finite. Several examples given in the article destroy a number of tempting conjectures about extensions of topological groups.  相似文献

We study the class Wof Hausdorff topological groups Gfor which the following two cardinal invariants coincide

ES(G)=min{|H|:HGdense and essential}

TD(G)=min{|H|:HGtotally dense}

We prove that W contains the following classes:locally compact abelian groups, compact connected groups, countably compact totally discon¬nected abelian groups, topologically simple groups, locally compact Abelian groups when endowed with their Bohr topology, totally minimal abelian groups and free Abelian topological groups. For all these classes we are also able to giv ean explicit computation of the common value of ESand TD.  相似文献

We call a central Z-extension of a group G weakly universal for an Abelian group A if the correspondence assigning to a homomorphism ZA the corresponding A-extension yields a bijection of extension classes. The main problem discussed in this paper is the existence of central Lie group extensions of a connected Lie group G which is weakly universal for all Abelian Lie groups whose identity components are quotients of vector spaces by discrete subgroups. We call these Abelian groups regular. In the first part of the paper we deal with the corresponding question in the context of topological, Fréchet, and Banach–Lie algebras, and in the second part we turn to the groups. Here we start with a discussion of the weak universality for discrete Abelian groups and then turn to regular Lie groups A. The main results are a Recognition and a Characterization Theorem for weakly universal central extensions.  相似文献

In this paper, we study linearly topological groups. We introduce the notion of a weakly linearly compact group, which generalizes the notion of a weakly separable group, and examine the main properties of such groups. For weakly linearly compact groups, we construct the character theory and present an algebraic characterization of some classes of such groups. Some well-known theorems for periodic Abelian groups are generalized for the case of linearly discrete, topological Abelian groups; for linearly compact and linearly discrete topological Abelian groups, we also construct the character theory and study some important properties of linearly discrete groups. For linearly discrete, topological Abelian groups, we analyze the splittability condition (Theorem 3.12) and present the characteristic condition of decomposability of a discrete group G into the direct sum of rank-1 groups. We also present an algebraic characterization of linearly compact groups. We introduce the notion of a weakly linearly compact, topological Abelian group, which generalizes the notion of a weakly separable Abelian group, and examine some properties of such groups. These groups are a generalization of fibrous Abelian groups introduced by Vilenkin. We give an algebraic characterization of divisible, weakly locally compact Abelian groups that do not contain nonzero elements of finite order (Proposition 7.9). For weakly locally compact Abelian groups, we construct universal groups.  相似文献

A topological Abelian group G is called (strongly) self-dual if there exists a topological isomorphism Φ:GG of G onto the dual group G (such that Φ(x)(y)=Φ(y)(x) for all x,yG). We prove that every countably compact self-dual Abelian group is finite. It turns out, however, that for every infinite cardinal κ with κω=κ, there exists a pseudocompact, non-compact, strongly self-dual Boolean group of cardinality κ.  相似文献

Let G be an arbitrary Abelian group. A subgroup A of G is said to be quasi-purifiable in G if there exists a pure subgroup H of G containing A such that A is almost-dense in H and H/A is torsion. Such a subgroup H is called a “quasi-pure hull” of A in G. We prove that if G is an Abelian group whose maximal torsion subgroup is torsion-complete, then all subgroups A are quasi-purifiable in G and all maximal quasi-pure hulls of A are isomorphic. Every subgroup A of a torsion-complete p-primary group G is contained in a minimal direct summand of G that is a minimal pure torsion-complete subgroup containing A. An Abelian group G is said to be an “ADE decomposable group” if there exist an ADE subgroup K of G and a subgroup T′ of T(G) such that G = KT′. An Abelian group whose maximal torsion subgroup is torsion-complete is ADE decomposable. Hence direct products of cyclic groups are ADE decomposable groups.  相似文献

We prove that an irresolvable left topological group is of the first category. The pseudocharacter of an irresolvable left topological groupG is countable, provided thatG is Abelian or its cardinality is nonmeasurable. Some other cardinal invariants of an irresolvable left topological group are also determined. Kiev University, Kiev. Torsion-free Abelian groups G and H are called quasi-equal (GH) if λGHG for a certain natural number ≈. It is known (see [3]) that the quasi-equality of torsion-free Abelian groups can be represented as the equality in an appropriate factor category. Thus while dealing with certain group properties it is usual to prove that the property under consideration is preserved under the transition to a quasi-equal group. This trick is especially frequently used when the author investigates module properties of Abelian groups; here a group is considered as a left module over its endomorphism ring. On the other hand, a topical problem in the Abelian group theory is the problem of investigation of pureness in the category of Abelian groups (see [4]). We consider the pureness introduced by P. Cohn [2] for Abelian groups as modules over their endomorphism rings. Particularity of the investigation of the properties of pureness for the Abelian group G as the module E (G)G lies in the fact that this is a more general situation than the investigation of pureness for a unitary module over an arbitrary ring R with the identity element. Indeed, if R M is an arbitrary unitary left module and M + is its Abelian group, then each element from R can be identified with an appropriate endomorphism from the ring E(M +) under the canonical ring homomorphism RE(M +). Then it holds that if E(M+) N is a pure submodule in E(M+) M +, then R N is a pure submodule in R M. In the present paper the interrelations between pureness, servantness, and quasi-decompositions for Abelian torsion-free groups of finite rank will be investigated. __________ Translated from Fundamentalnaya i Prikladnaya Matematika (Fundamental and Applied Mathematics), Vol. 10, No. 2, pp. 225–238, 2004.  相似文献

We study groups G that satisfy the following conditions: (i) G is a finite solvable group with nonprimary metacyclic second subgroup and (ii) all Sylow subgroups of the group G are elementary Abelian subgroups. We describe the structure of groups of this type with complementable nonmetacyclic subgroups.  相似文献

Fréchet-Urysohn (briefly F-U) property for topological spaces is known to be highly non-multiplicative; for instance, the square of a compact F-U space is not in general Fréchet-Urysohn [P. Simon, A compact Fréchet space whose square is not Fréchet, Comment. Math. Univ. Carolin. 21 (1980) 749-753. [27]]. Van Douwen proved that the product of a metrizable space by a Fréchet-Urysohn space may not be (even) sequential. If the second factor is a topological group this behaviour improves significantly: we have obtained (Theorem 1.6(c)) that the product of a first countable space by a F-U topological group is a F-U space. We draw some important consequences by interacting this fact with Pontryagin duality theory. The main results are the following:
(1)
If the dual group of a metrizable Abelian group is F-U, then it must be metrizable and locally compact.
(2)
Leaning on (1) we point out a big class of hemicompact sequential non-Fréchet-Urysohn groups, namely: the dual groups of metrizable separable locally quasi-convex non-locally precompact groups. The members of this class are furthermore complete, strictly angelic and locally quasi-convex.
(3)
Similar results are also obtained in the framework of locally convex spaces.
Another class of sequential non-Fréchet-Urysohn complete topological Abelian groups very different from ours is given in [E.G. Zelenyuk, I.V. Protasov, Topologies of Abelian groups, Math. USSR Izv. 37 (2) (1991) 445-460. [32]].  相似文献

The possibility of endowing an Abelian topological group G with the structure of a topological vector space when a subgroup F of G and the quotient group GF are topological vector groups is investigated. It is shown that, if F is a real Fréchet group and GF a complete metrizable real vector group, then G is a complete metrizable real vector group. This result is of particular interest if GF is finite dimensional or if F is one dimensional and GF a separable Hilbert group.  相似文献

We show that every Abelian group G with r0(G)=|G|=|G|ω admits a pseudocompact Hausdorff topological group topology T such that the space (G,T) is Fréchet-Urysohn. We also show that a bounded torsion Abelian group G of exponent n admits a pseudocompact Hausdorff topological group topology making G a Fréchet-Urysohn space if for every prime divisor p of n and every integer k≥0, the Ulm-Kaplansky invariant fp,k of G satisfies (fp,k)ω=fp,k provided that fp,k is infinite and fp,k>fp,i for each i>k.Our approach is based on an appropriate dense embedding of a group G into a Σ-product of circle groups or finite cyclic groups.  相似文献

An Abelian group is said to be R-Hopfian [L-co-Hopfian] if every surjective [injective] endomorphism has a right [left] inverse. An Abelian group G is said to be hereditarily R-Hopfian [hereditarily L-co-Hopfian] if each subgroup of G is R-Hopfian [L-co-Hopfian]; similarly G is super R-Hopfian [super L-co-Hopfian] if each homomorphic image of G is R-Hopfian [L-co-Hopfian]. The various classes of hereditarily and super R-Hopfian and L-co-Hopfian groups are studied and necessary conditions for groups to have these properties are derived; in several, but not all, cases, su?cient conditions are also obtained.  相似文献

We study the duality properties of two rather different classes of subgroups of direct products of discrete groups (protodiscrete groups): P-groups, i.e., topological groups such that countable intersections of its open subsets are open, and protodiscrete groups of countable pseudocharacter (topological groups in which the identity is the intersection of countably many open sets). It was recently shown by the same authors that the direct product Π of an arbitrary family of discrete Abelian groups becomes reflexive when endowed with the ω-box topology. This was the first example of a non-discrete reflexive P-group. Here we present a considerable generalization of this theorem and show that every product of feathered (equivalently, almost metrizable) Abelian groups equipped with the P-modified topology is reflexive. In particular, every locally compact Abelian group with the P-modified topology is reflexive. We also examine the reflexivity of dense subgroups of products Π with the P-modified topology and obtain the first examples of non-complete reflexive P-groups. We find as well that the better behaved class of prodiscrete groups (complete protodiscrete groups) of countable pseudocharacter contains non-reflexive members—any uncountable bounded torsion Abelian group G of cardinality ω2 supports a topology τ such that (G,τ) is a non-reflexive prodiscrete group of countable pseudocharacter.  相似文献

Abelian groups
The present, fourth survey of review articles on Abelian groups includes works reviewed in the years 1979–1984. Also, as in the preceding surveys, no attention has been given to questions involving finite Abelian groups, topological groups, ordered groups, group algebras, modules, or the structure of subgroups, or to questions connected with logic. The word group throughout is understood to mean Abelian group (except in the case of the group of automorphisms of an Abelian group). Concepts and notation not defined in this survey can be found in the books [117, 118]. The letterZ throughout denotes the group (or ring) of integers,Q the group (or field) of rational numbers,Q p the group (ring) of all rational numbers whose denominator is not divisible by the primep, Ip the group of allp-adic integers. The torsion part of an Abelian groupG is throughout denoted bytG. Translated from Itogi Nauki i Tekhniki. Seriya Algebra, Topologiya, Geometriya, Vol. 23, pp. 51–118.  相似文献

Let G be a finitely generated torsion-free group, which is a metabelian product of Abelian groups. We establish a criterion for endomorphisms satisfying some extra restriction to be invertible in G. Test sets for IA-endomorphisms of G are described and its test rank computed.  相似文献
