Optical Diffractive Memories: Angular Selectivity and Diffraction Efficiency in Dichromated Gelatin

Two thousand images of resolution 512×512 pixels as a regular matrix pattern of 10×10 elements are stored, where each element is angularly multiplexed 20 times in a 25 μm thickness of dichromated gelatin emulsion without cross-talk effect. The surface area of the matrix is 1 cm². We show good concordance of the angular selectivity between the experimental result and theory. The diffraction efficiency of each 20 multiplexed images is measured and has nearly the same value. Examples of reconstructed images for multiple applications are given, for example, storage of 160,000 images on a 3′1/2 floppy disc format, which is about 100 min of black and white film. Application can be made to automobile cartography and storage of X-ray images as well as weather forecast images. Colored diffractive images are also possible and are illustrated.     

Optical properties of polarization-dependent geometric phase elements with partially polarized light

The behavior of geometric phase elements illuminated with partially polarized monochromatic beams is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The element discussed in this paper is composed of wave plates with π-retardation and a space-variant orientation angle. We found that a beam emerging from such an element comprises two polarization orders; right-and left-handed circularly polarized states with conjugate geometric phase modification. This phase equals twice the orientation angle of the space-variant wave plate comprising the element. Apart from the two polarization orders, the emerging beam coherence polarization matrix includes a “vectorial interference matrix” which contains information concerning the correlation between the two orthogonal, circularly polarized portions of the incident beam. In this paper we measure this correlation by a simple interference experiment. In addition, we found that the equivalent mutual intensity of the emerging beam is modulated according to the geometric phase induced by the element. Other interesting phenomena concerning propagation will be discussed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The experiment made use of a spherical geometric phase element that was realized by use of a space-variant subwavelength grating illuminated with CO₂ laser radiation of 10.6 μm wavelength.

报道了基于高频CO₂激光脉冲写入的新型长周期光纤光栅的低噪音掺铒光纤放大器,这种新型长周期光纤光栅是用大约几千Hz的高频CO₂激光脉冲对光纤玻璃热冲击作用而形成的.在铒纤中插入一个长周期光纤光栅,会明显减少掺铒光纤放大器的放大自发辐射(ASE)噪音.报道了两种低噪音掺铒光纤放大器,作为前置放大器和线路放大器,它们的ASE噪音指数分别从4.0 dB减少到3.5 dB和从4.8 dB减少到4.3 dB,并且在作为线放时,其小信号增益从30 dB提高到37 dB,降噪及提高增益效应十分显著.     

Digital volume gratings

An optical element constructed by stacking a set of binary-phase grating sheets can simulate the functions of optically recorded volume gratings. Our electromagnetic numerical study also shows that if one of the grating sheets is replaced by another one with different grating period, power spectrum of the diffracted wave changes completely with extra diffraction orders. This property will claim strong advantage in security document applications. Analysis of alignment error reveals interesting phenomena concerning to how misalignment affects diffraction efficiency.     

On Two Parallel Matched Gratings Demodulation Method of Fiber Grating Strain Sensor

The method of demodulation with two parallel matched fiber Bragg gratings( FBGs)system is introduced to enlarge the range of strain that can be detected by the FBG sensor system.

以偶氮聚合物光致表面起伏光栅为模板,制备聚二甲基硅氧烷(PDMS)弹性印章,再以可溶性聚酰亚胺(PI)为“墨水”,在石英玻璃上压印出具有规则起伏结构的PI薄膜.由此制备的PI薄膜显示出很好的使液晶分子定向排列的效果.此方法成本低、效率高,是一种实用的液晶定向层薄膜制备方法.     

Dynamics of photoexcited donor-acceptor complexes between C60 andN,N-diethylaniline. Polarization picosecond spectroscopy study

The kinetics of the formation and decay of photoexcited radical ion pairs of donoracceptor charge-transfer complexes between C₆₀ andN,N-diethylaniline (DEA) in chlorobenzene was studied by picosecond laser-induced diffraction gratings. It was established that the anisotropy of polarization of the diffraction signal decreases as the concentration of DEA increases. The radical ion states of the photoexcited C₆₀ ⁻...DEA⁺ complex have zero anisotropy. This effect is likely due to the isotropic intracomplex transfer of an electron from the local excited state to the radical ion state. The rate constant of quenching of the singlet excited C₆₀ byN,N-diethylaniline (1.4·10¹⁰ L mol⁻¹ s⁻¹) and the lifetimes of the solventseparated C₆₀ ⁻...DEA⁺ and tight [C₆₀ ⁻...DEA⁺] (95±7 and 31±4 ps, respectively) radical ion pairs were measured. Dynamics of phase transitions in a liquid crystal probed by Raman spectroscopy

Raman spectra of the Schiff 's base liquid crystalline compound 5O5, N-(4- n-pentyloxybenzylidene)-4'-n-pentylaniline, have been recorded as a function of temperature from 22 to 80°C in the 1140-1220 cm^-1 and 1550-1640 cm^-1 spectral regions. From careful deconvolution of the spectral features using Lorentzian profiles, precise values of peak positions, integrated intensities and linewidths of some selected Raman bands were obtained. The variations of the Raman spectral parameters with temperature are discussed in terms of changes in the molecular alignment and its effect on intra-/inter-molecular interactions at the Cr-G, G-SmF, SmF-SmC and SmA-N phase transitions. From a detailed study, it is inferred that the increased orientational/vibrational freedom of the alkyl chains, as well as the delocalization of the electron clouds, is responsible for the spectral anomalies at the Cr-G transition. Loss of positional ordering and twist around the -C₆H₄-N= bond takes place at the SmF-SmC transition. In the SmA-N transition, some evidence for the formation of cybotactic clusters was obtained.     

BIOLOGICALLY DERIVED PHOTOACTIVE MACROMOLECULAR AZODYES

Azophenols with various substituents at the para position of the phenyl ring were enzymatically polymerized in the presence of H₂O₂. Structural characterization of the synthesized polymers by FTIR, FT-Raman, and NMR (¹H and ¹³C) spectroscopy confirms our previous observation that this enzymatically catalyzed coupling reaction occurs primarily at the ortho positions, with some substitution at the meta position of the phenol ring. The strong constraint and poor packing of the azobenzene chromophores in the polymer leads to a significant blue shift of the π-π^* transition absorption and slow photoisomerization and thermal relaxation in comparison to the monomers. Surface relief gratings (SRG) with large surface modulation have been fabricated on these enzymatically synthesized polymer films.
