Nanoprobes for intracellular and single cell surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)

Surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising and powerful label free technique for high resolution analysis of single cells. For intracellular analysis, there is a need for SERS‐active nanoprobes that are minimally invasive to cells, do not affect cell viability, and provide reproducible signals. This work reviews the state‐of‐the‐art tools currently available for intracellular SERS. Various types of SERS probes are considered, including colloidal gold and silver nanoparticles, metallized optical fibers, and tip‐enhanced Raman probes. We also discuss recently developed SERS‐active nanopipettes implemented on the basis of pulled glass microcapillaries. Finally, the critical aspects of selecting an optimal SERS nanoprobe for single‐cell analysis depending on a particular application are summarized. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

The chemical nature of the products of the microbiological transformation of lathyrine

The chemical nature of the compounds formed in the microbiological transformation of -amino--(2-amino-4-pyrimidyl)propionic acid (lathyrine) under the action of soil microorganisms capable of using pyrimidine bases as sources of carbon and nitrogen has been studied.     

Phase relations in the ZrO2-FeO system

We present the results of the investigation of the ZrO₂-FeO system under an inert atmosphere. We have refined the position of the eutectic point, which lies at 1332 ± 5°C and 10.3 ± 0.6 mol % ZrO₂. The iron oxide solubility boundaries in zirconium dioxide have been determined over a wide temperature range taking into account the polymorphism in ZrO₂. A phase diagram for the system has been designed.     

The chemical structure of the products of the transformation of natural pyrimidine bases and 5-halouracils by mycobacteria

It has been established that in the transformation of natural pyrimidine bases and 5-halouracils by strains of the genus Mycobacterium the following are formed as intermediates: from uracil, cytosine, and 5-iodouracil, barbituric acid; from thymine, 5-methylbarbituric aicd; and from 5-fluoro-, 5-chloro-, and 5-bromouracils, the corresponding 5-halobarbituric acids.
