The initial step of thrombus formation on blood-contacting biomaterials is known to be adsorption of blood proteins followed by platelet adhesion. It is generally accepted that surface modification of the biomaterials with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) substantially reduces protein adsorption and cell adhesion. Dacron® (polyethylene terephthalate) fabric, which is one of the biomaterials commonly used in blood-contacting devices, was grafted with PEO. A simple two-step procedure for covalent grafting of PEO onto the surface of Dacron® fabric was used. The surface was first treated with PEO-polybutadiene-PEO (PEO-PB-PEO) triblock copolymer, to introduce a layer of double bonds onto the surface. The Dacron® surface was then exposed to a solution of Pluronic® F108 (PF108), a commercially available PEO-poly(propylene oxide)-PEO (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymer. The surface with two adsorbed layers of PEO-PB-PEO and PF108 was γ-irradiated in the presence of PF108 in the bulk solution for a total radiation dose of 0.8 Mrad. The bulk concentrations of PEO-PB-PEO and PF108 were varied to maximize the efficiency of PEO grafting. Fibrinogen adsorption on PEO-grafted surfaces was reduced more than 90%, compared with that on control surfaces, irrespective of the bulk concentrations of polymers used for grafting. Platelet adhesion was also reduced substantially by PEO grafting. Only a few round platelets were able to adhere to the PEO-grafted surface, while the control surface was fully covered with aggregates of activated platelets. PEO grafting on polyethylene terephthalate using PEO-PB-PEO and PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers is a simple approach that can be used for various other biomaterials.  相似文献

xLi2MnO3-(1-x)LiNi0.9Zn0.1O2 (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) cathodes were prepared by two steps solid-state reaction method. Layered crystalline phases (space groups of C2/m for Li2MnO3 and R3m for LiNi0.9Zn0.1O2) were detected in all cathodes. FTIR study also revealed the formation of the layered-type structures of all cathodes. The structural parameters were greatly influenced by the contents of Li2MnO3 in xLi2MnO3-(1-x)LiNi0.9Zn0.1O2. The electrical conductivities were found in the range of 1.2 × 10?6 to 2.7 × 10?6 S/cm. The dielectric spectra revealed the interfacial polarization Maxwell–Wagner type dielectric dispersion existing in all samples. The cathodes delivered the discharge capacities of 149 (x = 0.1), 151 (x = 0.2) and 157 mAh/g (x = 0.3) with capacity retention between 94.6 and 96.8% when they were cycled from 3.0 to 4.5 V under 0.1C rate. The x = 0.3 cathode exhibited the highest cyclic performance (96.8%) after 10 cycles due to its lower cations disorder.  相似文献

It is claimed, though not without dispute, that genetically engineered mammalian cells grow more slowly than their progenitor cells because the recombinant gene system causes a metabolic burden. This was found to be the case for CHO cells transfected with expression vectors forcytochrome b5. The slower growth was associated with lower metabolic activity measured by heat flux and mitochondrial activity (rhodamine 123 fluorescence). The calorimetric-respirometric ratio was similar for all cell types, implying that the greater fluxes of glucose and glutamine in the recombinant cells was channelled to biosynthesis. Summary The problem of impurity diffusion accompanying segregation phase nucleation on dislocations has been studied using the approximation of the local equilibrium with respect to the impurity distribution between the volume solution and dislocation regions. It has been shown that the known experimental data on diffusion and solubility of some interstitial impurities in cold-worked b.c.c. and f.c.c. metals and alloys can be described in the framework of the dislocation trap model. The characteristics of the impurity segregation regions near dislocations have been obtained from the treatment of the diffusion and solubility data for the systems. On the basis of the crystallographic and thermodynamic considerations the possibility of the existence of such segregation phase regions along dislocations in the systems in question has been shown.  相似文献

This paper studies the temporal communication patterns of online communities of developers and users of the open source Eclipse Java development environment. It measures the productivity of each community and seeks to identify correlations that exist between group communication characteristics and productivity attributes. The study uses the TeCFlow (Temporal Communication Flow) visualizer to create movie maps of the knowledge flow by analyzing the publicly accessible Eclipse developer mailing lists as an approximation of the social networks of developers and users. Thirty-three different Eclipse communities discussing development and use of components of Eclipse such as the Java Development Tools, the different platform components, the C/C++ Development Tools and the AspectJ extension have been analyzed over a period of six months. The temporal evolution of social network variables such as betweenness centrality, density, contribution index, and degree have been computed and plotted. Productivity of each development group is measured in terms of two indices, namely performance and creativity. Performance of a group is defined as the ratio of new bugs submitted compared with bugs fixed within the same period of time. Creativity is calculated as a function of new features proposed and implemented. Preliminary results indicate that there is a correlation between attributes of social networks such as density and betweenness centrality and group productivity measures in an open source development community. We also find a positive correlation between changes over time in betweenness centrality and creativity, and a negative correlation between changes in betweenness centrality and performance.This paper was tied for Best Paper, NAACSOS (North American Association for Computational Social and Organizational Science) Annual Conference 2005, June 26–28, Notre Dame. The overall efficiency of an existing scale-up pressure-assisted thermal sterilization (PATS) unit was investigated with regards to inactivation of Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores suspended in pumpkin soup. The PATS unit is a double pipe heat exchanger in which the soup is pumped into its inner high pressure tube and constrained by two high pressure valves, while steam is continuously passed through the annular region to heat the content. The technology is based on pressure generation by thermal expansion of the liquid in an enclosure. In this work, the addition of an air line to push the treated liquid food out of the existing PATS unit has improved the overall quality of the treated samples, as evidenced by achieving higher log reduction of the spores. Compared with thermal processing, the application of PATS shows the potential for lowering the thermal treatment temperature, offering improved food quality.  相似文献
